Hanhundskastrering – Orsaker, förväntningar och resultat

    Get PDF
It is a common decision to castrate your dog. Dog owners usually have varying reasons as to why they want to castrate their dogs. They also have different anticipations, and fears, about the physiological and behavioral effects from the surgery. According to literature most dog owners turn to veterinary health care personnel for advice regarding castration. This makes it important to investigate how animal owners perceive the effects of castration. The purpose of the study was to research why animal owners choose to castrate their healthy male dogs and the perceived effects on their behavior, health, and welfare. For this a survey was used. The results from the survey were compared to the already existing literature on the subject. The survey was published in different Facebook-groups in which the writers believed it would reach the intended target group. The target group consisted of dog owners who had surgically castrated their healthy male dog within the last two years. Consonant with literature on the subject 62% of the respondents answered that they turned to a veterinarian for advice about castration. For this reason, it is a highly relevant subject to immerse into, and thereby create a base which makes it easier for veterinary health care personnel to give consistent and adequate advice regarding castration of the male dog According to the respondents the most common reason for castrating their dog was that they had some sort of unwanted behavior. After the surgery most dog owners saw a decrease in behaviors like stress when around bitches in heat, excessive urine marking and humping. A few respondents had seen an increase in weight, hunger, and a change in fur. Overall, the effects of the castration corresponded with the expectations from the dog owners. In the survey 59% answered that the castration had given their dog a better health and welfare. When comparing existing literature with the information obtained from the survey a connection is seen regarding excessive urine marking and humping. Several sources showed that these behaviors decreased after the surgery, which correlated with the answers from the survey. Some people suggest gaining weight could be an effect from castration and is a matter that is still discussed

The role of bed sediments for fractionation of phosphorus in remediated ditches in Sweden

Sweden’s environmental quality objectives “A varied agricultural landscape” and “Zero eutrophication”, aims to ensure food production while reducing negative impact from fertilizers on the environment. The input ceilings of nutrient concentrations in the Baltic Sea are still critical. A great part of the nutrient pressures on lakes and seas that can be seen today are historically caused by agriculture and have turned into legacy P (phosphorus). However, there are several management practices to improve the nutrient use efficiency in agriculture, e.g., improved drainage, buffer zones, wetlands, or two-stage ditches. A two-stage ditch is a ditch design with terraces, that aims to improve water quality and increase nutrient retention within the landscape. The terraces should even out high and low flow to reduce flooding and stabilize the ditch to reduce erosion. According to the latest estimations, the N (nitrogen) pressures in the Baltic Sea have slightly improved, but not the P pressures. Yet, the goals of nutrient concentrations and inputs in the Baltic Sea are still not achieved. P has two main pathways, either leaching in dissolved form, or absorbed to soil particles or incorporated in organic material. The P concentrations absorbed to particles are substantially higher than the P concentrations in dissolved form. There are also different types of bonds and bond strengths between P and soil particles. The aim of this study was to investigate P dynamics in sediments of two-stage ditches, focusing on how hydrology, water chemistry and catchment properties affects P stocks. In the study, sediments from 10 two-stage ditches in Sweden were sampled to analyse the P fractions: loosely bound P, Fe-P, Al-P, organic bound P and Ca-P, with a chemical extraction method. The P fractions and TP (total phosphorus) were then tested to see if any changes in concentration within and between the sampled two-stage ditches could be found. The P fractions and TP concentrations were also investigated with clay content, pH, DO (dissolved oxygen), BFI (baseflow index) and EPC0 to see if there were correlations that could explain observed patterns. The results showed no significant changes for any P fractions or TP concentrations within same two-stage ditch or between the two-stage ditches. There were no significant correlations between the P fractions and TP and the characteristics of the catchment nor chemical and hydrological factors. However, patterns show that HCl-P (Ca-P), BD-P (Fe-P) and TP concentrations seem to be higher within the sediments of the channel rather than in the sediments of the terraces. HCl-P also seems to reside to a higher extent downstream within the sediments of the channels. Higher P concentrations residing in the channels could indicate that two-stage ditches as a nutrient mitigation measure works as a P sink. Although there are risks of having large amount of P stored in sediments if any extreme weather events would occur and predicted future climate change is suggesting more frequent but intense weather events. Also, larger concentrations of P within stream sediments indicates that further research of P in sediments are needed to fully understand the P dynamics to tackle eutrophication problems and further evaluate two-stage ditches as a nutrient mitigation measure. There are possible explanations to the varied results. E.g., features of the landscape, mineralogy, past or current agricultural practices, location of drainage pipes and dams, or legacy P could have affected the results. During the 1980s, there was an increased awareness of stifle problems in boxer dogs, and from 1989 until 2019 there was a Swedish Kennel Club (SKK) health program screening stifle joints in boxers. The purpose of the Boxer's screening program was to assess, using radiographs, osteophyte formation around the joints. This study aims to investigate occurrence, types of and possible causes of stifle problems in boxers in two ways: a simple survey aimed at boxer owners/breeders, and a search of the University Animal Hospitals (UDS) medical record system including a review of radiographs. The survey was anonymous and was developed by the student in consultation with two supervisors. It was distributed with the help of the Boxer Club and via social media. In the searches in the UDS journal system, the boxers who had diagnoses related to the knee joint were selected. For those of these boxers where radiographs of the knee joints were available, the radiographs were reviewed by the student together with both supervisors. The radiographs were assessed according to four categories that were developed by the student and the supervisors: the shape of the proximal trochlea, the opacity of the cranioproximal tibia, occurrence of osteophytes and stifle joint soft tissue opacity size. A total of 474 people, who owned at least 1609 boxers, answered the survey. Of these, 189 dogs (10–14%) had stifle joint problems. The journal study showed that 533 boxers had visited UDS between 2010 and 2020. Of these, 34 (2–10%) visited the clinic for stifle joint problems, of which 25 underwent radiographs. In the study, the radiographs of a number of boxers showed a shape variation of proximal trochlea on femur in the form of an indentation at the cranial aspect of the femoral distal physis. The shape variation was considered to match descriptions of a change observed by veterinarian Lars Audell in the 1980s. In a few boxers, a variation in the opacity of the cranioproximal tibia was also observed in the form of a focal area with decreased opacity cranially in the region of the proximal physis of the tibia. The study could not show any association between the shape variation on the proximal trochlea on the femur and the presence of osteophytes, increased soft tissue opacity size in the joint, reduced opacity cranioproximally in the tibia or the clinical diagnoses osteoarthritis or cruciate ligament injury. The study also showed no association between reduced opacity in the cranioproximal of the tibia and the presence of osteophytes. Previous studies have shown that boxers are at a higher risk of developing stifle joint problems compared to other breeds, although the answers from the respondents to the survey in this study indicated that the majority of pet owners did not know whether this was the case or not. Cruciate ligament injury and osteoarthritis were the two knee diseases that were most common both among the questionnaire responses and in the UDS records, which is consistent with previous studies. The study may be considered indicative rather than providing definite conclusions. To increase the understanding of the causes of knee joint problems in boxers and to be able to give recommendations, an expanded and in-depth analysis of radiographs should be done. Such a study can be done by following and radiographing boxers over a longer period of time, so that an association between knee joint problems and the variations in shape/appearance that this study noted in proximal trochlea and cranioproximal tibia can be verified or refuted

The situation in and around the Baltic Sea, with large areas with hypoxia in the sea and areas in the watershed with a high concentration of animal farms, has led to a need to increase the nutrient recycling of animal manure. High levels of phosphorus (P) in the soil lead to leaching, and by reducing the P-level in organic fertilizers, this leaching can be reduced. By transporting P to areas with few animal farms, farmers’ use of organic fertilizers can increase. Through the process of mechanical separation, it is possible to create a solid fraction that is rich in P and dry matter (DM). Since it has low water content, it is easy to transport it to areas with a large need of P. Screw press separation is an easy method that is cheap and that can be implemented on a large scale for separation of both manure and digestate. Screw press solids can be turned into biochar through pyrolysis because of the low water content. The use of separated material is beneficial for the carbon (C) sequestration of the soil, and biochar causes further stabilization of the material, making it even better for C storage. Several different methods can increase C in the soil with for example organic amendments or biochar. This project aimed to evaluate biochar produced from screw press separated material from digestate and pig manure with respect to C stability and nitrogen (N) release during 50 days after the incorporation in soil. Two different pyrolysis temperatures (400 and 550°C) were used to produce biochar, and the treatments were tested with and without the application of mineral N. The properties were studied in a laboratory study, where biochar and solids were incubated with soil in 15°C. Samples were removed during the incubation in order to follow the development of N, C, pH and DM. CO2-emission was measured using NaOH-traps to calculate C mineralization. Mineral-N was measured by the extraction of NH4+ and NO3- with KCl. The screw press separation of digestate resulted in 25 % of the initial P in the solid fraction and 11 % of the initial N. When processing the materials, the concentration of nutrients increased, and the stability of C increased. The addition of mineral N to the treatments incorporated into the soil resulted in lower CO2-emission. The highest emission of CO2 came from manure solids, while biochar had very low emissions. This indicates that there was a good supply of C for microorganisms to degrade in the manure solids, and that the stability of C in biochar was high. From the added C, 37 % was lost in the form of CO2 from manure solids while the biochar lost <2 % of the total amount of C. “Biochar 550” seemed to produce higher CO2-emissions, but significant differences could only be found in one biochar. There were no differences in inorganic-N levels between the biochars. An addition of N caused Net N immobilization, while the biochar without N caused mineralization. Using screw press is a good option when treating materials such as digestate and manure. There are methods that are more effective when separating P and DM but that cost more. In our study, we found that in the short term, biochar might be able to mineralize N and increase the availability to the plant, but the total amount was very low. Biochar would be a good option for organic amendments since the loss of C is much lower than for amendments from the solid material that biochar was derived from. The application rate was equivalent to 25 000 kg/ha. Other studies have seen differences in performance in the soil and on crop yield between biochars, but in this study, the biochars were very similar when looking at CO2-emissions and N mineralization. Biochar shows potential in decreased C losses compared to their corresponding solids, and the addition of mineral N has a positive effect on CO2-emission, is which are reduced

Methane mitigating feed additives in future dairy production : consumer and producer attitudes and potential effects on dairy products

    Get PDF
Enteric methane emitted from ruminant metabolism is the most prominent greenhouse gas produced in livestock production. Mitigation strategies in the form of different types of methane reducing feed additives are approaching the market in near future. The effects of implementing the feed additives into the dairy sector was evaluated in this study. The chemical synthesized compound 3-Nitrooxypropanol and the algae Asparagopsis taxiformis are the most prominent methane reducing feed additives with the potential of reducing enteric methane production up to 30% without reducing milk yield or nutrient utilization. Effects on volatile fatty acids, protein profile, and fatty acid composition observed encourage further studies on milk quality to ensure that dairy products are not affected. The concentration of different fatty acids and protein shifted, while the total concentration of fat and protein in the milk was unaffected. Compounds deriving from methane mitigating additives in the form of bromoform and nitrites have known health concerns in larger quantities. Accumulation and excretion of these compounds is an area of research needed to ensure a safe long-term usage. The possibility of economic foundation, and survey results showing optimism amongst both consumers and producers support further studies for implementation of methane reducing feed additives into the dairy production.

Reactive dogs in Sweden : a survey to dog owners with reactive dogs

Reactivity can be explained as an animal’s sensitivity to environmental stimuli. Characteristics for reactivity in dogs are quick and intense reaction to different stimuli. The behaviours can be shown as aggression, fear, and excitement, such as barking, lunges and withdrawal. Reactivity is a personality in the dog and is strongly paired with fear. Many different factors may have an impact on the reactive behaviours in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate some of them. Some of these are inadequate early socialisation, the owners experience and knowledge, their use of different training methods and previous experiences in the dogs. A big issue of reactivity in dogs are stress, which have a negative impact on dogs’ welfare. It is also stressful for the owners to have a dog that react in a problematic manner since they are often misunderstood by the general public. The lack of understanding may make some owners feel isolated. The study was done by an online questionnaire and 162 complete questionnaires were collected where the owners perceived their dog as reactive. Forty-two percent perceived their dog as ”moderate reactive” and 43% considered that the reactivity was due to fear/insecurity. Many of the respondents had no knowledge about their dog’s socialization at an early age since many of the dogs were rehomed or adopted. Fifty-seven percent of the dogs had experienced some kind of traumatic event, such as dog attacks, rough handle or abuse. As a source of information, the internet was most indicated, together with social media and different social platforms. Increased knowledge about reactivity in dogs, causes and symptoms, can help prevent reactive behaviours and will promote welfare in dogs

Biorefining is a process where silage or fresh grass is pressed through a biorefinery, resulting in two fractions of the silage or the fresh grass, the silage pulp, which can be fed to ruminants and the liquid phase, which can be fed to pigs. Biorefining makes it therefore possible to feed silage to pigs to a greater extent and gives the forage a wider range of applications. The aim of this study was to evaluate feed consumption, live weight gain and body condition score of dairy heifers fed grass-clover silage pulp. The feeding experiment was conducted at the agricultural high school Sötåsen in Töreboda. The dairy cow herd was organic and consisted of about 70 lactating dairy cows and replacement heifers. The experiment started November 24, 2021 and ended May 5, 2022. Data until April 6 are included in my BcS thesis. The experiment included a total of 36 heifers, of which 18 were fed silage and the other 18 heifers were fed silage pulp. Every feed weight was recorded and sampled once a week. The feed residues from each group were weighed and recorded every morning. The heifers were weighed, and body condition scored once a month. Weight and body condition score were recorded at an individual level and feed rations were adjusted by the average weight of each group. Results from the feeding experiment showed that feed consumption, live weight gain and body condition score were not negatively affected when fibre pulp from the grass-clover silage instead of the grass-clover silage was fed to dairy heifers

Integrating nature in urban areas : how natural structures and features in urban spaces contribute to human health and well-being as well as biodiversity

    Get PDF
Nature has shown to have many positive effects on our health and well-being as it benefi ts both our physical and mental health. Still, it has seldom been included in development processes in urban areas, which has led green spaces to become fragmented, resulting in decreasing the diversity of species. Urban biodiversity today, in contrast to the natural landscape, mainly consists of generalist species that are able to adapt to urban conditions and human disturbances. This makes it important to preserve biodiversity in urban areas, as it can benefi t humans as well. This study has through the means of a literature study examined how nature can be integrated in urban areas and at the same time promote both human needs and biodiversity by looking at the natural landscape. It has further looked into how urban green spaces can help mitigate the negative effect on the climate. The results suggest that the needs of biodiversity in urban areas can have many synergies with human needs, it can also raise confl icts affecting the relationship between humans and biodiversity. Further, it has also been shown that urbanization itself is often in confl ict with both human needs and biodiversity, a confl ict that can be solved through strategic designing. The structures and features found in the urban landscape do not help to mitigate the negative climate effects, but that the natural structures do help to mitigate them. The present study has also shown that to integrate nature in urban areas and still attend to human needs, urban inhabitants need to have knowledge of nature — how it works and its benefi ts. This is because the literature has shown that knowledge about nature changes humans preferences and attitude towards it. Because it is only when we understand the contributions nature provides us and our needs that we can fully integrate nature to further promote biodiversity in urban areas

: fallstudie gällande Fredentorp i Lund

The purpose of this work is to investigate the cemetery in Fredentorp and to see what benefits the cemetery has for biodiversity. At present, not many people know about the cemetery in Fredentorp. This means that the cemetery is still largely unknown to the public. There are very few studies on the contribution of the cemetries to biodiversity. The Fredentorp cemetery is located in the northern part of Lund and has been named "The new cemetery in Lund". The cemetery is reported to have a size of 36 ha and is growing in size as Lunders need new burial sites (Nathell 2021). Prehistoric graves from the Bronze Age are found in the area, which imply high prehistoric values (Church of Sweden 2019). There are currently possibilities for both coffin burial and urn burials at the cemetary (Nathell 2021). The conclusion is that if the management in blocks with burials is made less intensive, Fredentorp's biodiversity will increase. The aim of the work has been to highlight the habitats that can be met in a cemetery and how management and administration can work to promote these. In order to clarify why biodiversity is needed, the work began with a literature review. To further develop the work, interviews and site visits were conducted which formed the basis of a case study for Fredentorp Cemetery. Comparisons were made between the different blocks of Fredentorp to identify any differences in biodiversity. Cemeteries are currently very intensively managed, which means that the surfaces convey a very tidy appearance. The results show that if the management of the burial blocks is made less intensive, the biodiversity of Fredentorp will increase
