Tanzania is a country located in sub-Sahara Africa by the Indian Ocean. Tanzania's aquaculture sector is small but has the potential to grow. As the population grows, so does the demand for food. Nile tilapia is the most cultured fish in Tanzania due to its hardiness, fast growth and tolerance to many environmental conditions. Fish meal (FM) and soybean meal has traditionally been used as a protein source in fish feed. However, insects have been proposed as potential alternative protein sources to replace FM and soybean meal, which are expensive and negatively affects the environment and feed and food security. One of these insects is the black soldier fly (BSF) due to its high content of amino acids, lipids, vitamins and minerals. The objective of the current study is to examine and assess how a locally produced feed containing BSF meal will affect the growth performance of Nile tilapia. Physical feed quality and chemical composition were also evaluated. In addition, the environmental impact of using BSF larvae in tilapia feed was also evaluated by calculating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from such a feed production system. The BSF diet was compared to a Control and commercially used diet at fish farms in Tanzania. Results show that growth performance could not be statistically evaluated due to variation in the different ponds used during the fish growth experiment. Nutritional composition and the chemical score showed low histidine, lysine, and methionine and a high phenylalanine content in the BSF meal compared to the FM. Physical feed quality showed that the BSF diet had the best water stability compared to other diets used in the experiment. However, the BSF diet had lower durability and hardness. GHG calculations showed that the BSF diet had the lowest emission of GHG

In 2015, the UN decided on 17 sustainable development goals that are part of Agenda 2030. They exist so that the world will be free from hunger and poverty, so that we can have a more equal society and to protect the environment. This literature study addresses how livestock, particularly cattle, pigs, poultry and fish in aquaculture, contribute to meeting the global sustainability goals. Livestock contribute positively to goals 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 and negatively to goals 3, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17. There are measures to be taken so that livestock can contribute more positively or less negatively. Increasing animal welfare can be a way to increase the contribution of livestock to meeting the sustainable development goals. Examples of measures are resource efficiency by feeding with by-products, good manure management, optimizing nitrogen feeding and reducing fishmeal in feed

The current and future role of food inspectors in reducing food waste : the perspective of the food inspector

It is estimated that globally one third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. This can cause a significant problem from a social, economic, and environmental perspective. The United Nations Organisation, as part of its 2030 Initiative for Sustainable Development, has put forward a "Plan to Achieve a Better and More Sustainable Future for All by 2030" The aim of this study was to examine the current role of inspectors in reducing food waste in the food sector, but also to explore their thoughts and experiences on the future role of inspectors. In order to achieve this goal, a qualitative research method with self-administered questionnaires was conducted. This was done to identify and understand the motivations, attitudes, barriers, and subjective norms of food inspectors in relation to food waste. From 12 interviews conducted, it was concluded that food inspectors do not currently control food waste. The current food law does not contain provisions for the control of food waste in food establishments. The results showed that there is a lack of supporting legislation. The law should be able to clearly define the obligations of each actor in the food supply chain, but it does not. In addition, food inspectors clearly lack the financial resources to intervene in the food waste dilemma. The lack of a clear job description and lack of time are other obstacles. According to the informants, inspections have to be conducted in a limited time frame. The main motivation for food inspectors to address food waste issues was their personal preferences. They can play an important role in raising awareness among food practitioners by providing education, guidance, and tips and advice. If more inspectors are made aware of the food waste problem, it is likely to have a major positive impact in the future. Especially in view of the Swedish Food Agency project, which will be able to disseminate important information about food waste monitoring. The goal of this necessary information is to reach out to the different companies to disseminate the information and make it more attractive for entrepreneurs to reduce food waste

The boardwalk in Rindö hamn : a landscape analysis and design proposal

I Stockholms mellersta skärgård finner man Rindö. In Stockholm's central archipelago you will find Rindö. Military activity has been a central part of the island's history. By order of Gustav Vasa, the first defense facility was allowed to be built as a lock to the capital. Today, the function of the site is different, housing, cheese factory, beer brewery and a school are some of the social functions that were established as a result of a development wave in the urban area of Oskar-Fredriksborg also called Rindö hamn. New housing has contributed to increased visitor pressure on the local green areas, the city of Vaxholm has therefore decided in new detailed development plans to increase accessibility and utilization of the shoreline for recreational purposes. The following work aims to shape a boardwalk in Rindö hamn that will meet the need for increased accessibility and prevent wear and tear on the landscape due to new development of housing. This paper also intends to investigate how recreational values can be strengthened in connection with the coast and the national interest area for cultural resource management. The work's research question are as follows: How can the existing path between Rindö hamn and the residential area of Solö in eastern Rindö be developed and designed to cope with increased visitor pressure, strengthen accessibility and recreational values, while at the same time caring for the national interest in cultural resource management and Rindö hamn's landscape picture? The main method for answering the research question is design, which is supported by the method of analysis through synthesis. Along with a thorough investigation of the different layers of the landscape with an integrated landscape character analysis, sketching and studying reference projects has been central to answering the research question. The concept is based on the analysis and inventory of Rindö hamn where it was clearly revealed that the place has clear contrasts between nature and culture while at the same time there is a spatial barrier of mountains and forest between the Solö residential area and Rindö hamn. It gave rise to the concept string together. The concept functions as an aid in the design to adapt new elements to the various landscape characters that are represented within the project area. Along with connecting sea and land as well as the various residential areas of Solö and Rindö hamn. The design has a great focus on adapting to the conditions of the landscape. The result of the work is presented in an illustration plan with detailed sections and perspectives

Sleep is fundamental for dogs, for reasons like memory coordination and performance recovery. Lack of sleep can result in health problems and an increased stress level in the individual. In humans, one of the factors that has been shown to lead to sleep disturbances, is pain. There can be a lot of reasons for this, including an increase of internal arousal because of the physical discomfort, as well as alternations in the brain which among other things can lead to depression that influences sleep. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint inflammation which results in musculoskeletal pain, is one of the most common reasons for chronic pain in dogs. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to study the physiological activity in dogs during their nighttime rest hours, by the use of activity monitors, as a way to find out what kind of physical activity dogs with musculoskeletal pain has during nighttime and if their activity level differs from the one in clinically healthy dogs without pain. 30 healthy dogs and 22 dogs suffering from musculoskeletal pain participated in this study. The activity monitor that is used is by the brand Actigraph GT3-X and is placed on the collar near the dogs body. The healthy dogs has a mean of 4,8 registered nights and the dogs with musculoskeletal pain has a mean of 4,6 registered nights. The registered activity is categorized into the classifications “resting”, “sedentary 0-1351", “sedentary 401-1351", “lightmoderate”, “moderate vigorous”, and “vigorous”. The result shows a statistical significant difference for four of the classifications; “resting” (p = 0,021 mean), “sedentary 400-1351" (p = 0,009), “moderate vigorous” (p = 0,050), and “vigorous” (p = 0,048) in the comparison between the two groups of dogs regarding their means, in the unpaired t-test performed. The classifications “sedentary 0-1351" (p = 0,204) and “light moderate” (p = 0,221) shows no statistical significant difference. The dogs with musculoskeletal pain has fewer registrations in the activity classifications that means lower levels of activity or no activity at all, and a higher score in the categories with higher activity levels. The differences in registered activity are very small, and therefore it is probable that the results lack a clear clinical importance. The difference between the two groups is mainly the cause of four specific dogs among the participants with musculoskeletal pain. There can be many explanations for this and it´s not possible to completely rule out that the reasons can be others than pain. The difference that can be seen is still of interest for further studies with a larger number of participating dogs and more registered nights, for a more nuanced and reliable result in future research

Sweden's agriculture is becoming increasingly diversified, and a branch of activity that is becoming more common is self-processing of food. One of the most common ways to sell directly to consumers is by starting a farm shop where you conduct farm sales when consumers are increasingly demanding locally produced foods. The aim of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of farm shops and by visiting and interviewing three farm shop owners gain a deeper understanding of the business in general and what driving forces exist, what goals and future plans there are. The theories that help to analyze the empirical material are created value, place identity and community. Following the empirical collection and with the theories as a basis, it appears that the created value that the farm shops create constitutes a large spectrum. The farm shops and the consumers also contribute to the rural community. Regular customers are important for the farm shops, as well as the genuine and the local sense of place, which in turn can be linked to both community and social networks. The created value can stand for the genuine or that you buy, for example, an experience when you shop in the farm shop. An apple from a farm shop can be experienced as tastier. Both shops and consumers contribute to the community of the area by creating a meeting place, which in turn can be connected to both community and social networks. The farm shops depend on social networks to be able to build a customer network and what is of great importance to the farm shops are the regular customers

Rabbits are a common pet in Sweden. There is a lack of knowledge among rabbit owners regarding the normal behaviors and needs of rabbits, which may lead to development of diseases if abnormalities are not noticed. Otitis is one of the most common diseases in rabbits. According to literature, lop-eared rabbits are predisposed to otitis compared to erect-eared rabbits. Treatment of otitis is often performed at home. The likelihood of rabbit owners noticing and seeking care for otitis increases if the owners have knowledge about otitis and its symptoms. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge of otitis among rabbit owners in Sweden, and the possible hardships when treating otitis at home. The purpose was also to investigate the anatomy of the lop-ear as a possible predisposing factor to otitis. By a digital survey, rabbit owners were asked to answer questions about symptoms of otitis and the ear type of their rabbit. They also answered whether they had had rabbits with otitis or not, and their experience of at-home treatment. The survey collected 236 answers, whereof 163 were complete. The study showed that the majority perceived their knowledge about otitis as a five or above, on a scale graded 0 to 10. Their stated symptoms of otitis aligned with symptoms found in the literature. Half of the respondents experienced difficulties during treatment at home, mainly related to handling of the rabbit and local treatment in the ears. However, oral treatment was perceived as easy. The majority of the rabbits who had had otitis were lop-eared. A minority of the respondents would choose lop-eared rabbits in the future. Contrary to previous studies, rabbit owners appear to have a relatively high knowledge about the symptoms of otitis. These findings are in accordance with a previous Swedish bachelor thesis about rabbit owner’s knowledge of rabbits in Sweden. The presented difficulties during treatment at home indicates a need for further research regarding low-stress handling of rabbits. The results also indicate a lack of support from veterinary professionals regarding stressful tasks for both rabbit and rabbit owner. The owner´s choice of ear type in rabbits is influenced by perceived susceptibility of disease and personal experience of otitis in rabbits. More research is needed to investigate whether breeding may affect the frequency and occurrence of otitis in rabbits with lop-ears

The impact of activity on young dogs’ body condition in Sweden : a questionnaire study

Today, the dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a common companion animal all over the world and there are currently 1 100 000 registered dogs in Sweden. Globally we currently have a growing problem with obesity in both humans and animals. Many dogs live a life closely linked to humans, which means that their routines are mainly controlled by humans. As obesity has become a growing prob-lem in the human population, it has also become a bigger problem in the world´s dog population. Overweight has been observed in more than half of the developed countries dog population. More-over, it has been reported that dog owners often underestimate the body condition score on their own dog. One factor that affect the increased frequency of the overweight dogs is that large parts of their daily lives are spent sedentary. In many other studies have found a connection between physical activity and dogs’ BCS. Another factor that affects the BCS is the design of feeding and activation routines. Since overweight in dogs is associated with several diseases that reduces the affected individual’s life quality and lifespan, it is important to investigate the causes of overweight. This study has reviewed surveys from the “Life with my Dog” project conducted at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there was any correlation between physical activity and BCS in young dogs in Sweden. The aim was also to investigate whether there was any correlation between dog owners’ visual estimation of the dogs’ body condition score based on images and the palpable assessment made by the dog own-ers. The results showed that only a small proportion of the dogs included were overweight at the age of 13 months. Moreover, the owners’ palpable BCS corresponded well with their BCS based on image comparisons. The results also showed that the physical activities’ type and amount partly had an impact on the young dogs’ BCS. The dogs that were reported as having a higher energy level at 12 months of age had a lower BCS at 13 months compared to the dogs that were considered less energetic. Dogs that had higher activity level (ran more while outside) at 6 months tended to show a lower BCS at 13 months and dogs at 6 months that did not have access to the yard tended to have a higher BCS at 13 months compared to those who had access. Dogs that lived in an apartment tended to have a higher BCS at 13 months than dogs that live in house or a farm. However, the results should be taken with caution as feeding routines were not considered, and the study only relied on the owners’ body condition score assessment. To get a more reliable result, more dogs need to be examined and followed under a longer period of time

Tree damages : a study on managing damage to trees in urban environments with plastic wrapping as a maintenance method

    Get PDF
This work has aimed to investigate whether a targeted maintenance method can improve the ability of trees to overcome damage. In this case, it was trunk damage that occurred after a wave of vandalism on Malmö city and Malmö cemetery administration's trees in the fall of 2020. Since one administration chose to cover the damages with plastic and the other administration did not use plastic. We wanted to investigate whether the maintenance method had any effect on trees ability to occlude over an open wound. Through a field study, measurements were made on a selection of the trees that had been exposed and with a supplementary literature study we were able to describe what we saw. The new measurements we took during the winter of 2023 were compared with the data that was included in the reports that were made in connection with the damage inventory in the winter of 2021. After compiling the data on the trees that were included in the study, the result showed that the plastic wrapping of the damages had an positive effect. As there were currently no large amount of scientific material on the subject and because damages to trees in urban environments is common. It can be seen as relevant for many administrations and municipalities to take part in the knowledge that this study has contributed to. Furthermore, we also hope that this study can contribute to further research in the field

Women change quickly while men change slowly : exploring gender perceptions of couples of East African origins in Sweden (Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea and Ethiopia)

    Get PDF
This study seeks to explore, from the perspectives of migrant couples, the challenges emanating from the change in gender norms during the integration process of migrant couples in Sweden. The research is specifically limited to migrants of East African origins (Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Rwanda) and the main intent is to scrutinize the evolvement of intra-household relations as gender norms change during the integration process. For data collection, qualitative methods have been employed and reliable data were generated through in-depth individual interviews. Data have been analyzed through the lens of relevant theories and concepts; Gender theory and household bargaining have been employed to discuss the challenges for couples as gender norms change during the integration process. The empirical findings revealed that the intra-household interactions between men and women are conspicuously shaped by the gender norms of the host country. This was evidenced by the reshaping of household bargaining in the migrants’ families where women have acquired more bargaining power or the abilities to influence decisions in the households. Moreover, the new gender norms have engendered the alteration of gendered division of labor as evidenced by the upheaval of responsibilities and tasks between men and women in the migrant households. The research has revealed that these changes have triggered conflicts between men and women in the migrant households. The disputes are raised due to the fact that women have acquired more bargaining power through economic independence and men do not want to lose the autocratic power and control over the households. Furthermore, this study has revealed that, though migrant couples face awkward gender-related challenges, they have adopted coping mechanisms and more than men, women quickly adopt the Swedish gender norms and culture during their stay in Sweden
