Supporting Education for Sustainable Development through an Online Global Forum for Teacher Educators
The Online Global Forum on Education for Sustainable De-velopment (ESD) for Teacher Educators was launched in 2019 by colleagues from three continents who formed a group called ESD Innovate (hereinafter also referred to as Forum founders). ESD Innovate is made up of three African representatives, two European, and two from North America and the Caribbean. The group was formed during the Inter-national Network of Teacher Education Institutions (INTEI) conference in 2016. In discussions at this conference, we (the authors of this chapter and those who formed ESD In-novate) heard the need for ongoing professional develop-ment in ESD for teacher educators. Professional develop-ment programs regarding ESD are available for in-service teachers in some regions of the world, but few are available for teacher educators, especially initiatives designed for sus-tained engagement. Thus, the Forum aims to meet the need for continuing professional development of teacher educa-tors with an ESD focus. Additionally, the Forum was de-signed to bring teacher educators together from all over the world to facilitate collaboration between and among teacher educators and their student teachers in an intellectual dia-logue on the response of teacher education to the Sustaina-ble Development Goals (United Nations, 2015). Feminist simulations: deep in the dream of a game
This study delves into how the worlds of computer gaming and fine art intersect, employing DIY feminism to reflect on the gendered world of gaming and the links between simulation, reality, and fantasy within the game of Minecraft. I argue for a feminine craft (crochet) to challenge masculine gaming oppressions and the lack of representation, acceptance, and visibility for women in gaming culture. My research question is taken from the End Poem seen when the player has beaten the game's main boss. There is a line within the poem that asks, “But what true structure did this player create, in the reality behind the screen?” (End Poem, 2022). The discourse of identity and community are topics of interest to me. As a citizen living in post-apartheid South Africa, I am captivated by the re-emerging wisdom and knowledge of Nguni cultural philosophies and practices. My practice-based research is interested in a creative interpretation of these ancient philosophies and practices in the context of postcolonial life. The project in many ways re-members through observation of socio-political issues such as inequality, violence, and vandalism as reflections of internal challenges of the individual self in current reality. In essence, my discussion in this paper highlights the need for healing grief and loss for the well-being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual – of society. Self-definition is the core of any community and we see this in the philosophy of the African proverb umntu ngumntu ngabantu, ‘I am because you are’. ‘I am’ is a set of beliefs that construct the individual self; our life’s course then becomes a constant molding of the body and the world around us. The wisdom of ubuntu was, and is, a catalyst for many African cultures, as this law recognizes each individual as important and equal in the community. As a descendant of various indigenous clans originating in Africa the well-being and balance of my being is determined by how much I know about who I am. Consequently, being a part of the generation that is experiencing the transitioning phases from apartheid I question the ways we are dealing with the residue of coloniality concerning all aspects of self; the physical, emotional, and mental bodies of self. My creative work is a reflection of the exercises I implemented to cultivate selfhood as a way to participate in and control my reality as a marginalized member of society. The different chapters touch on many intersecting theories about tools for healing/soothing the self. The creative process experimented with the various concepts embedded in the expression ‘I am because you are’. In the process of this research, I learned that knowing yourself is one of the principles of ubuntu, which teaches me that I cannot be or give what I do not have. The themes I explore through the above expression are self-love, self-acceptance, and self-respect using a creative lens. This practice-based research proposes a concept; the act of love as a decolonial gesture. My exhibition Vuleka Mhlaba Ndinegene1 utilizes visual language to convey the need for more conversations on healing using natural elements, as a way to make a connection between self, the natural environment, and community. In the first and second chapters, the paper focuses on practices employed by artists such as Lhola Amira, Guadalupe Maravilla, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Tony Gum, Lina Iris Viktor, and Aida Muleneh, to relate the various approaches to re-member the severed connection between self, nature, and community. Movement ecology of a West African sciaenid fish, Argyrosomus coronus, in southern Angola
Argyrosomus coronus is a large sciaenid species with a primary distribution between Cape Frio, in Namibia, and Luanda, in Angola, where it exists as a panmictic stock. Early juveniles (< 300 mm TL) occur on muddy offshore substrata (50–80 m deep) and at one year of age they recruit into the inshore zone. Adults are thought to predominantly occur inshore. Spawning occurs in the species during late spring. The species is heavily targeted by the recreational, subsistence, artisanal and commercial fisheries as juveniles through to adults and there are signs of population decline with declines in catch per unit effort (CPUE) and maximum size. A basic understanding of their movement ecology has emerged from previous studies, based on conventional tagging (mark-recapture) and CPUE monitoring from a shore-based recreational fishery. Juveniles were thought to be resident, with larger fish undertaking long distance migration southward in the austral summer and returning during the austral winter. In addition to the fishery-related threats faced by the species, the southern Angolan region has been identified to be an ocean warming hotspot, and this has been linked to a southward distribution shift and the recent hybridisation of A. coronus with its congener A. inodorus, in Namibia. This study aims to expand the knowledge of the movement ecology of A. coronus and to interrogate our current understanding of the movement patterns of the species using passive acoustic telemetry. Passive acoustic receivers were deployed at three study sites, Flamingo, where all tagging occurred, which lies ~ 200 km north of the Angolan border with Namibia, is a relatively exposed stretch of coastline; Tombua Bay, which lies 30 km south of Flamingo, is a small, sheltered natural embayment; and Baia dos Tigres, which lies 100 km south of Tombua Bay, is a sheltered lagoon in the lee of an island ~ 10 km from the mainland. Tagging occurred in two batches, one year apart. In the first batch, sub-adults (n = 3) and adults (n = 17) were tagged and monitored for two years. In the second batch, juveniles (n = 7) and sub-adults (n = 3) were tagged and monitored for one year. The first objective of this thesis (Chapter 3) was to examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of A. coronus at a regional-level (across study sites, to investigate the prevalence of the longshore migration), and at a local-level (within a study site), and to categorise the movement behaviour of juveniles, sub-adults and adults. Traditional seasons were not used in this thesis, as the study region alternates between ‘warm’ periods (up to ~ 26 °C mean daily water temperature), when Angola Current water covers the area, and ‘cold’ periods (down to ~ 15 °C mean daily water temperature), when Benguela Current water covers the area. A high degree of residency of tagged fish to the Flamingo study site, where tagging was conducted, was found, with juveniles and sub-adults never being detected outside of the Flamingo study site. Five adults (29 %) were detected haphazardly for between one and 36 days at Tombua Bay, following which they were typically detected again at the Flamingo study site. No fish were ever detected at the southernmost site, Baia dos Tigres, suggesting that none migrated to Namibia. Within the Flamingo study site, adults were found to group at the inshore mid-region of the study site during ‘cold’ periods, dispersing again during ‘warm’ periods, when there was a concomitant offshore shift in their area use. This explained the absence of the species from catches in the shore-based recreational fishery during ‘warm’ periods. These results challenge previous migration hypotheses for the species. Therefore, longshore return migrations which were evident from previously conducted conventional tagging, are probably not the norm for the species, but likely occur at a low frequency. The species exhibited a high degree of residency to their tagging site, despite the drastic seasonal changes in water temperatures and station-keeping was the dominant behaviour across all life stages. The constrained area-use noted in this study, relative to the known distribution of the species, suggests that A. coronus exists as a metapopulation, consisting of a network of subpopulations interconnected by gene flow that is most likely facilitated during their pelagic egg and larval phase. The second objective of this thesis was to examine the group formation observed at the Flamingo study site during ‘cold’ periods (Chapter 4). While this grouping of individuals was found to be correlated with water temperature, it was unlikely to be a causal relationship, as the water temperature was not dissimilar to adjacent areas. The area where individuals were concentrated is known to frequently attract large shoals of their dominant prey, Sardinella aurita. While the timing of this group formation aligns with a pre-spawning period, no studies have assessed the existence of local spawning. A. coronus were, however, likely utilising an abundant prey source, during the important pre-spawning period, in order to build up energy reserves. Group formation is a common feature of sciaenids, but literature on the subject is restricted to spawning congregations. Fish are not only more vulnerable to capture during these periods but may also be disturbed during these potentially important social periods. The third objective of this thesis was to investigate the presence of sociality in the species (Chapter 5). Evidence for sociality during and outside the seasonal group formation was explored using network analyses. There was evidence for sociality, with several groups, characterized by co-locations among individuals, identified. While these groups were fluid through time, there was evidence of persistent sociality, with two individuals in particular being consistently co-located over the entire study period. Due to the persistent nature of sociality, group foraging is suggested as an explanation for this, with anecdotal evidence of coordinated hunting supporting this. Acoustic telemetry vastly improved the knowledge of the movement ecology of A. coronus. Despite their panmictic population genetic structure, they were found to be largely resident, likely occurring as a metapopulation across their distribution, with egg and larval dispersal likely the primary mechanism for maintaining panmixia. Evidence for sociality was also found, which was previously unexplored in the species. The persistent nature of social groupings throughout the year, suggests that it may be linked with group foraging and is supported by anecdotal evidence of coordinated hunting by the species. While this study highlights the value of acoustic telemetry in studying movement ecology, it also shows the importance of drawing on multiple methods to fully understand a species’ spatial ecology, including mark-recapture, population genetics, and fishery catch and effort data.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Science, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, 202
Vernacular sound technologies: experimenting with reverb in isiXhosa choral recordings
In this thesis, I show how the application of convolution reverb in isiXhosa choral music recordings might engender notions of space in choral music which are acutely linked to issues of identity. To deal with the multitude of music’s spatiality, I turn to two spatial theories of listening, namely, R. Murray Schafer’s notion of schizophonia, in which recorded sound is thought to be separated from its spatial context, and Eric Clarke’s ecological listening, in which sound is intricately bound up with its environment. I present these as two opposing theories which can be used to explain spatial thinking in music technology and suggest that the latter might be more productive in considering recorded sound. Using this ecological notion of spatial listening, I investigate reverb as a marker of spatial identity for isiXhosa choral music and develop in response to this an experimental vernacular reverb technology which might be more keenly attuned to the performance sites of this music. Five objectives underpin this overarching aim. The first is to develop a theoretical framework for considering vernacular sound technologies, specifically reverb. The second objective is to illustrate these theoretical considerations in the practices of choral composers and sound engineers who have recorded this genre of music. The third objective is to develop a set of experimental reverb presets as a response to the theoretical considerations and their manifestations in practice. The last objective is to test these experimental presets in a feedback session with choristers. This research is divided into two parts: theoretical and empirical. Part I considers theories of listening and reverb to develop the notion of vernacular sound technologies. In this section, I draw on secondary literature from sound studies, music perception, music technology, and cultural studies. I theorise here a notion of vernacular reverb by problematising the relationship between space and recording technology currently used in the postproduction of choral music. Part II is concerned with empirical research in three parts employing empirical qualitative research methodologies. The first is an illustrative section in which data is collected on how composers and sound engineers think about acoustics in isiXhosa choral music. The second part of the empirical research synthesises and applies the data through experimentation. In this section, I use the data collected from interviews read against the earlier theoretical review to produce three convolution reverb settings, which are simulated acoustic signatures of local spaces in which Xhosa choral music might be performed. The acoustic signatures are recorded from venues local to the Seven Fountains and Assegaaibos community, situated just outside Makhanda, Eastern Cape. The third section of the research is the collection and analysis of iii feedback from a focus group interview with a local choir. The focus group interview focuses on the thoughts of the choristers on identity and acoustics in music when presented with recorded songs produced with the vernacular reverbs. In conclusion, I argue that the recordings at Seven Fountains and Assegaaibos show that acoustic space is a technological marker of identity, and indigenisation also has to do with the acoustic characteristics of the spaces of choral music performance.Thesis (MMus) -- Faculty of Humanities, Music and Musicology, 202
Exploring the interplay between foundation phase learners’ home and school literacy practices
The thesis looked at Foundation Phase children’s early home literacy practices and examined how these literacy practices are adopted at school in Libode, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, a rural area. The purpose of the study was to determine how early literacy practices at home are adopted in classrooms. The study aimed to determine the relationship between home and school literacy. To understand the literacy practices used at home and school by four Foundation Phase children and four Foundation Phase teachers, an interpretive ethnographic study design was used. Participants who spoke isiXhosa as their first language participated in data collection using structured observations, video and audio recordings, field notes, and unstructured interviews. The study’s framework, the Cultural Historical Activity Theory, was used as a tool to collect, examine, and interpret data through its various components. Themes were identified, arranged, and categorized. The findings revealed children from low socioeconomic backgrounds have rich literacy practices. Teachers do not acknowledge or recognize the contributions that these children’s cultural backgrounds make. The study recommends that schools start acknowledging the advantages that children’s environments have for them. It also suggests that teachers build on the knowledge that children bring from home, as this will have an impact on how they behave in class because students bring their family’s literacy habits, which serve as the foundation for their academic literacy habits, to school.Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Education, Institute for the Study of Englishes in Africa, 202

Contrasting effects of climate change on the invasion risk and biocontrol potential of the invasive Iris pseudacorus L. between Northern and Southern Hemisphere
Iris pseudacorus is both a prized ornamental and an invasive aquatic plant that tends to grow dense monospecific stands, displacing the local vegetation and altering the hydrology of freshwater ecosystems. Originally from Europe, this species has historically invaded North America, China and Japan, and more recently spread through Argentina, South Africa and Australasia, where it is now a target for biological control. Field surveys within its native range have led to the selection of three candidate biocontrol agents. Prioritizing the best candidates for different regions constitutes a critical step, which could save significant time and resources before further cost-intensive experimental studies are conducted. Climate change is seldom taken into consideration in the prioritization process. In this regard, climatic suitability can be used to model the potential distributions of weeds and their candidate agents, both in space and time, thus allowing to identify areas at risk of invasion and predict where agents will be able to establish long-term. Accordingly, the objectives of this work were (i) to predict I. pseudacorus invasions and range shifts in the context of climate change; (ii) to identify wetland areas most at risk of invasion under present and future climatic conditions; and (iii) to prioritize the best suite of candidate biocontrol agents for different invaded ranges, worldwide. To do so, we modelled the present and future (2040–2060) climatic suitability of I. pseudacorus and its candidate agents using the software MaxEnt. Our results highlight a clear distinction between predictions for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. In North America and eastern Asia, the area climatically suitable for I. pseudacorus is expected to increase and shift northwards. As for its biocontrol agents, very low suitability is predicted across these regions, further decreasing under future climatic conditions. On the other hand, climatically suitable areas for the plant in South America, southern Africa and Australasia are predicted, on average, to reduce in response to climate change. A decrease in climatic suitability is also expected for its candidate biocontrol agents which, however, would still maintain a significant range overlap with their host. These results can be used to prioritize areas most at risk of invasion and identify which combination of candidates could potentially provide the best level of control across different invaded ranges
