The art of adaption: the National Arts Festival’s strategic response to the COVID-19 pandemic
The National Arts Festival (NAF), an annual event held in South Africa, faced a significant challenge in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The traditional in-person format of the festival was no longer feasible due to government restrictions. In response, the NAF's CEO, Monica Newton, led her team in a rapid transition to a virtual platform. This decision-making process and the creation of the first virtual NAF (vNAF) occurred within a remarkably short period of 100 days. This teaching case study delves into the academic framework of crisis management, stakeholder theory, strategic thinking, strategic management, and business models, examining their application in the context of the NAF's transformation. To understand the decision-making process and challenges faced by the NAF, a qualitative research design was employed. Data collection involved two face-to-face interviews with Monica Newton, CEO of the NAF, and secondary sources. The teaching case is accompanied by a comprehensive note for educators, offering guidance on its classroom use. The note includes a case synopsis, intended audience, suggested learning outcomes, theoretical connections, teaching strategies, potential discussion questions, evaluation methods, and additional resources. Enhancing licence plate recognition for a robust vehicle re-identification system
Vehicle security is a growing concern for citizens of South Africa. Law enforcement relies on reports and security camera footage for vehicle identification but struggles to match the increasing number of carjacking incidents and low vehicle recovery rates. Security camera footage offers an accessible means to identify stolen vehicles, yet it often poses hurdles like anamorphic plates and low resolution. Furthermore, depending on human operators proves inefficient, requiring faster processes to improve vehicle recovery rates and trust in law enforcement. The integration of deep learning has revolutionised object detection algorithms, increasing the popularity of vehicle tracking for security purposes. This thesis investigates advanced deep-learning methods for a comprehensive vehicle search and re-identification system. It enhances YOLOv7’s algorithmic capabilities and employs preprocessing techniques like super-resolution and perspective correction via the Improved Warped Planar Object Detection network for more effective licence plate optical character recognition. Key contributions include a specifically annotated dataset for training object detection models, an optical character recognition model based on YOLOv7, and a method for identifying vehicles in unrestricted data. The system detected rectangular and square licence plates without prior shape knowledge, achieving a 98.7% character recognition rate compared to 95.31% in related work. Moreover, it outperformed traditional optical character recognition by 28.25% and deep-learning EasyOCR by 14.18%. Extreme value theory with applications in finance
The development and implementation of extreme value theory models has been very significant as they demonstrate an application of statistics that is very much needed in the analysis of extreme events in a wide range of industries, and more recently the cryptocurrency industry. The crypto industry is booming as the phenomenon of cryptocurrencies is spreading worldwide and constantly drawing the attention of investors, the media, as well as financial institutions. Cryptocurrencies are highly volatile assets whose price fluctuations continually lead to the loss of millions in a variety of currencies in the market. In this thesis, the extreme behaviour in the tail of the distribution of returns of Bitcoin will be examined. High-frequency Bitcoin data spanning periods before as well as after the COVID-19 pandemic will be utilised. The Peaks-over-Threshold method will be used to build models based on the generalised Pareto distribution, and both positive returns and negative returns will be modelled. Several techniques to select appropriate thresholds for the models are explored and the goodness-offit of the models assessed to determine the extent to which extreme value theory can model Bitcoin returns sufficiently. The analysis is extended and performed on Bitcoin data from a different crypto exchange to ensure model robustness is achieved. Using Bivariate extreme value theory, a Gumbel copula is fitted by the method of maximum likelihood with censored data to model the dynamic relationship between Bitcoin returns and trading volumes at the extreme tails. The extreme dependence and correlation structures will be analysed using tail dependence coefficients and the related extreme correlation coefficients. All computations are executed in R and the results are recorded in tabular and graphical formats. Tail-related measures of risk, namely Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall, are estimated from the extreme value models. Backtesting procedures are performed on the results from the risk models. A comparison between the negative returns of Bitcoin and those of Gold is carried out to determine which is the less risky asset to invest in during extreme market conditions. The reproductive biology of warty sea cucumber, Neostichopus grammatus Clark (Holothuroidea: Echinodermata) under natural and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) conditions in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa
This study investigated the reproductive cycle of the warty sea cucumber, Neostichopus grammatus, in the wild and in a farming environment, to test its suitability for co-culture with abalone Haliotis midae in an IMTA system. The research formed part of a broader EU H2020 program, Aquavitae, and was conducted at Wild Coast Abalone in South Africa. The study investigated several environmental parameters, such as temperature, day length, and substrate, to determine if these have any effects on the gonadal development and reproductive cycle. The natural gametogenic cycle of wild warty sea cucumbers was determined by monitoring the Gonadosomatic Index (GI) values monthly for a period of 16 months. The GI index was validated by means of other maturity assessment techniques including measurement of the size and colour of the gonads, oocyte diameter measurements and gonad histology sections. Wild collected sea cucumbers were maintained in abalone farm rearing tanks on a diet of abalone feed and faecal waste for a period of 10 months, with GI values being determined monthly. The wild and farmed sea cucumber GI data was correlated with environmental parameters. Seasonal water temperature was strongly correlated with the GI values of wild warty sea cucumbers, suggesting that water temperature likely influences gonadal development. Sea cucumbers matured sexually during colder months (May to September) and spawned from September to February, during summer. The results of oocyte measurements, macroscopic and microscopic analyses, and histological analyses in combination with the GI values, provides a practical indicator of sexual maturity for captive breeding purposes. Farmed warty sea cucumbers followed the same annual reproductive cycle as wild sea cucumbers, however they came into spawning condition approximately one month later than wild conspecifics. As the farm water temperature was significantly higher than the ambient ocean water temperature, it was hypothesised that this may have affected the gonadal development of the farmed sea cucumbers. Furthermore, the farm-reared sea cucumbers lost weight and condition, indicating a nutritional deficiency. Previous studies indicated that the presence of a sand sediment facilitated the assimilation of organic detrital matter by sea cucumbers. An additional trial was thus set up to determine the effect of a sand sediment and cooler ambient temperature on the growth and gonadal development of the warty sea cucumbers. The growth and GI values of sea cucumbers in the cool water treatment did not differ significantly from the ambient temperature control groups. However, the addition of a sand substrate to the sea cucumber tanks had a significant positive growth effect on sea cucumber body mass and GI values. Sea cucumbers fed a diet of abalone waste material on the sand substrate exhibited final average GI values of 2.99 % (SE ±0.56). In contrast, sea cucumbers kept in bare tanks and only received abalone waste as food had significantly lower average GI values of 1.36 % (SE±0.2). This suggests that the provision of a sand sustrate in sea cucumber rearing containers is essential for the adequate nutrition and gonadal development. Connecting culture and science: Utilising Oshikundu and Ombidi in biology lessons on diffusion and osmosis
Various science curricula including that of Namibia recommend that teaching and learning should start with the knowledge and experiences of learners from their homes and communities. These experiences are the learners’ Indigenous Knowledge (IK) which should be integrated to make science accessible and relevant to learners from diverse sociocultural backgrounds. This suggests that science teachers are encouraged to integrate IK into their teaching to help learners grasp abstract concepts and construct their own understanding of phenomena. However, much literature has revealed that many teachers find it difficult to integrate IK into their science teaching. Some scholars further argue that teachers lack the pedagogical content knowledge to effectively integrate IK. I assume this could be because the science curriculum is not explicit on how IK should be integrated into science teaching. It is against this backdrop that in this study I mobilised the Indigenous technologies of making oshikundu and preserving ombidi to support Grade 10 Biology learners in talking and making sense of diffusion and osmosis. This study was underpinned by the interpretivist and Indigenous research paradigms. Within the Indigenous research paradigm, I focused on Ubuntu as a perspective. A qualitative case study was employed and conducted at a certain school in the northern part of Namibia, in the Ohangwena region. I worked with a group of 35 Grade 10 learners, two Indigenous Knowledge Custodians (KCs) who are the custodians of cultural heritage and one Biology teacher (critical friend) as participants in this study. Qualitative data were collected using a focus group interview (sharing circle), group activity, participatory observation, and learners’ journal reflections. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory together with Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentative Theory were used as lenses to analyse data. The findings of the study revealed that during the IKCs’ practical demonstrations learners were able to identify science concepts embedded in the cultural practices of making oshikundu and preserving ombidi. The findings further revealed that the practical demonstrations enhanced active participation and interactions among learners. I thus recommend that teachers should tap into IKCs’ cultural heritage by inviting them into their classrooms to make science relevant, accessible and meaningful to learners.Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Secondary and Post-School Education, 202
The impact of corruption on stock market performance : evidence from BRICS
This thesis examines the impact of corruption perception on stock market performance across BRICS nations from 2010 to 2022 using a primarily quantitative approach. Grounded in theoretical frameworks such as Corruption as Grease, Corruption as Sand, and New Institutional Economics, the study employs the Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. It explores how corruption perceptions influence stock market capitalization (MCAP) over various time horizons. It utilizes empirical data and advanced techniques like unit root testing and cointegration tests to provide insights into short-term fluctuations and long-term trends in financial markets. The findings reveal significant long-term negative effects of the corruption perception index (CPI) on MCAP. Higher levels of perceived corruption correlate with lower stock market capitalization over extended periods, underscoring the persistent impact of institutional weaknesses on market stability. Short-term analyses show varying adjustment speeds towards equilibrium among BRICS nations, reflecting different economic contexts and policy responses to corruption. The findings suggest that investors should focus on markets with lower corruption perceptions for better stock market performance and advise policymakers to enhance transparency to build more resilient financial markets. Local and national stakeholders collaborate to take on Prosopis invasions with biological control and biomass use in South Africa
Research that directs the way stakeholders act and how they collaborate is essential when addressing complex environmental challenges in the field of sustainability science. For example, researchers attempting to manage Prosopis invasions through biological control in South Africa have historically faced challenges from stakeholders. In this study, we illustrate the impor tance of stakeholder engagement and social learning by outlining the collaborative effor ts of various stakeholders to promote effective, integrative and sustainable management of Prosopis invasions in the Nor thern Cape, South Africa. Through a community of practice approach, stakeholders worked together over the past half-decade in an attempt to develop a National Strategy for Prosopis management and improve its control. This strategy aimed not only to emphasise the need for integration of biomass use (aimed at offsetting the costs of mechanical clearing and necessary herbicide use) but also to underscore the significance of biocontrol alongside other management approaches. Stakeholders also identified that adequate farm-scale planning is necessary to provide a sense of purpose and assist in monitoring of progress. We worked alongside land managers and exper ts to develop such plans. The engagement of local champions played a crucial role in facilitating collaboration and learning among stakeholders, emphasising the significance of inclusive approaches in addressing complex sustainability challenges. In addition, we gained an understanding of how to develop the community of practice to enhance collaboration that ensures the implementation of plans to better manage Prosopis. Our findings underscore the necessity of meaningful stakeholder engagement and collaboration in effective invasive species management. By promoting understanding and involvement of diverse stakeholders, initiatives can have a greater impact in addressing broader sustainability issues
South Africa’s oldest ophiuroid fossils provide rare insights into the origination of the Malvinoxhosan Realm
Recent description of the oldest recorded brittle stars (ophiuroids) from the southern hemisphere revealed two distinct taxa of early Pragian age (approximately 410 million years old). Whereas one of the brittle stars belonged to a species previously described from younger strata, the others represent an unusually spiny taxon formerly unknown to science. Recovered from the 'upper member' of the Baviaanskloof Formation (the uppermost unit of the Table Mountain Group), they offer insights into the earliest recorded phase of the endemic Malvinoxhosan Realm, deposited in polar regions of the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, and better known from the overlying Bokkeveld Group
Citizen science tools for engaged research: Water quality monitoring in remote communities
Remote areas that lack conventional water-provisioning infrastructure often rely on rainwater harvesting, rivers, pans, reservoirs and borehole-extracted water to meet domestic water requirements. These water sources often have poor microbial quality and chemical composition, the quality of which is not routinely monitored. This study explored citizen science as a tool for Engaged Research and Responsible Research and Innovation, detailing the co-creation of a sustained community-based water quality monitoring program in collaboration with communities in villages in Amakhala Game Reserve (Eastern Cape, South Africa). Without access to other water sources, par ticipants predominantly used rainwater for drinking and cooking (80%), while borehole water was mainly used for cleaning and gardening due to its salty or bitter taste. A hydrogen sulfide (H2S) water testing kit was used by the citizen scientists to monitor the water quality. The H2S kits were effective in estimating bacterial contamination, showing a propor tional relationship with Coliler t® test results conducted in a laboratory. The alignment observed between community-based monitoring results and those derived from scientist-led testing underscores the value of data produced through citizen science initiatives. Sustained par ticipant engagement throughout this research reflected a sense of community empowerment through access to tools that inform their decisionmaking around water use and treatment as well as investment in the research, indicative of the perceived relevance of the research to community interests. This integration of transdisciplinary data sources holds promise for informing evidence-based decision-making processes, facilitating more effective and contextually informed water management strategies that value and integrate community perspectives alongside scientific insights
