Decoding complexity: A comprehensive review of MCR-ALS applications in advancing biological insights

    Get PDF
The great potential of vibrational spectroscopic techniques in the analysis of biological materials has been widely proven. The applications are numerous and range from diagnostics to drug development. However, to unveil the needed information from vibrational spectra, multiple chemometric methods have been elaborated, among which the Multivariate Curve Resolution- Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) approach is gaining a growing interest to unmix the complex spectroscopic dataset into smaller matrices of physically meaningful pure spectral components and their relative concentrations. The present paper reviews some re cent applications of the coupling of MCR-ALS regression and vibrational spectroscopies to biological samples and its potential in disentangling complex biological information within the analysed matrices

Bacterial viability and air quality: Experimental approach and results at the atmospheric simulation chamber ChAMBRe

    Get PDF
The effects of bioaerosol, the biological component of atmospheric aerosol, on the environment and health are numerous but still little known, studies on the subject are continually growing. Experiments conducted in Atmospheric Simulation Chambers (ASCs), can provide valuable information on the viability, dispersion and interactions of microorganisms in the aerosols. For this purpose, a multi-step experimental procedure was developed; systematic studies have been carried out in our ASC, to expose bioaerosol to controlled atmospheric conditions. This study reports the results of the experiments conducted on Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, which highlight how the two bacterial strains react, in terms of viability, to the aerosolization process and to remaining in an aerosolized state in controlled atmospheric conditions

Optimizing beam dynamics in the EuPRAXIA@_SPARCLAB RF injector

    Get PDF
The EuPRAXIA@SPARC LAB RF injector provides high brightness electron beams accelerated and longitudinally manipulated in the velocity bunching regime (VB). The RF injector works in the so-called comb configuration. It foresees a 30 pC witness and a 200 pC driver longitudinally compressed in the first two accelerating structures both operated in the VB regime. The beam stability can be improved by adding a High Harmonic Cavity (HHC), interposed between the Gun and the first accelerating structure, to shorten and flatter the charge distribution and manipulate the beams to reach proper transverse and longitudinal parameters. The paper reports on beam dynamics studies performed with the insertion of the X-band RF cavity that is proposed to shape the beam current distribution, linearize the longitudinal phase space, and stabilize it with respect to RF jitters

Climate change: The physical basis of radiative phenomena for the study of the greenhouse effect

    Get PDF
Effective teaching of the physical basis of the greenhouse effect is an essential element in understanding society’s role in altering the radiative balances that are leading to current climate change. The results of recent research in this field show that two key concepts for its understanding are still incompletely learned by students. These concepts are the thermal emission of bodies, and the interaction of electromagnetic radiation (at various frequencies) with different materials. In this paper we present some experiments to facilitate the learning of these concepts and their integration within an existing teaching-learning sequence focused on the physical basis of the greenhouse effect. The results of this experimentation will also be illustrated and compared with previous proposals

    Get PDF
The NLP tools for the automatic recognition and annotation of titles of figurative artworks from The Classical World, developed by the MonumenTAL project, have evolved through the digital modeling of linguistic patterns. These have helped to broaden the focus from the titles of specific artworks to the naming of generic iconographic types, and to add old and recent expressions specific to art historians and archaeologists. Thanks to this work based on a diachronic approach, a thesaurus of artwork titles (OEUVRE) gathering reference terms, variants and cacographies has been created and is now linked to the online LIMC-France database (corpus of Ancient artworks). The text corpus (Gold standard), from the 18th to the 21st century, and its annotations can now be exploited for statistical analysis or deep learning experimentation

Ipotesi, analisi informatiche e ricostruzione

    Get PDF
This paper analyses a new form of environmental visibility of ancient highland sites in Abruzzo (Central Italy) during arcaic period. This investigation offers unique opportunities for understanding the management of economic and political spaces of pre-Roman populations (i.e., Peligni). Through spatial analyses, the sites of valle Peligna are classified into different types. Then, they are contextualised within the historical and archaeological landscape. The results offer new clues for identifying a nonurban state system, which is well known in ancient literature but has yet to be traced in archaeological reconstructive models

An honest woman not just tomorrow, but forever: An analysis of Brazilian legislative process dealing with sexual crimes from the standpoint of the labelling approach

    Get PDF
Using the questions proposed by the criminological theory of the labelling theory, we propose to investigate the legislative processes that modified the criminal types of Title VI of the Brazilian Penal Code on crimes against sexual dignity, as well as the behavior of the agents behind the creation of the laws (deputies and senators), the investigation (police officers) and the trial (magistrates). To this end, we gave a brief overview of the labelling theory. Afterwards, we dealt with the legislative movements and institutional dialogues that removed the term “honest woman” and terms alluding to female virginity to increase protection and mitigate the stigmatization of people who have suffered sexual violence. Finally, we consider the consequences of Brazilian laws in cases of sexual violence. We noticed that despite the various legislative changes, the moral logic contained in the Explanatory Memorandum of the Brazilian Penal Code of 1940 remains: sexual crimes are offenses against honor, the honesty of families and public decency, and the offense against women's sexual dignity is relegated to the background.
