Prospects for measuring AbFB at the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and at the FCC-ee
Standard Model parameter determinations are still not satisfactory from LEP measurements, which can be better defined with the new measurements performed with ATLAS. Preliminary studies based on simulated events and part
of the LHC Run-2 data collected by the ATLAS experiment are presented, where the suggestion of a new experimental determination of the asymmetry Ab FB is given. Furthermore a feasibility study on the Ab FB measurement in the production of a b¯b pair from a decaying Z boson at the FCC-ee, with a parametric detector simulation tuned to the current design parameters of the IDEA detector and of the FCC-ee
accelerator are also discussed. All these studies show that measurements competitive or even more precise than that at LEP are in reach
Combining electron diffraction and calorimetry to find new polytypes of molecular compounds of pharmaceutical interest
This article proposes a new method integrating thermal and elec-
tron diffraction analyses for the detection and characterization of new polytypes of pharmaceutical compounds. In the first part, the importance of polymorphism in the pharmaceutical science will be discussed, then the main features of the experi-mental techniques used will be described, and finally, after looking at some selected examples, a proposed experimental protocol will be exposed.
Eco gas mixtures for the MRPCs cosmic ray telescopes of the EEE Project
The Extreme Energy Event (EEE) Project is a cosmic ray physics
experiment with outreach and educational purposes. The experiment is designed to study high energy cosmic rays through the detection of the Extensive Air Shower’s (EAS) muon component. The array of muon telescopes is based on Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPC) syncronized via GPS in order to correlate the information collected by different telescopes. The Project involves 70 schools from all over Italy with an intensive outreach program: students can actively contribute and participate in the EEE research activities. The EEE Collaboration is leading an ecological transition to replace the existing gas mixture with an eco-friendly one.
Having shown encouraging results, the new eco-gas mixture —based on C3H2F4 and
Helium— has already been deployed in some of the telescopes allowing the restart
of data taking
Comb-assisted Lamb-dip spectroscopy of the mercury intercombination line at 253.7 nm for metrological applications
The saturated absorption spectrum of mercury vapors is measured in coincidence with the 6s21S0 → 6s6p 3P1 intercombination transition at 253.7nm. Coherent radiation in the deep-UV region is produced by means of a double stage
of second harmonic generation of a 1014.8nm external cavity diode laser (ECDL) in a pair of nonlinear crystals. The ECDL frequency is tightly locked to the nearest tooth of a self-referenced optical frequency comb synthesizer, traceable to a GPS-disciplined time base signal provided by a Rb-clock. We present the measurement of the pressure-broadening coefficient due to Hg-Hg collisions by analyzing the Lamb-dip profile at different values of the mercury vapor pressure. This study is significant for ongoing experiments that employ the mercury intercombination line for temperature metrology as well as tests of fundamental symmetries
Study of magnetic interactions in a sample of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles in DC and AC fields
The study conducted on a sample of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with oleic acid has been performed by using DC and AC field techniques useful to determine the presence of a mixed state of interactions within the same sample, confirmed by the qualitative comparison between the results of the two techniques. In particular, a thorough study of the AC response of the sample, in presence of an overlapping DC field, allowed to determine the types of interactions observed by the DC analysis
