A robust, modular approach to produce graphene–MOx multilayer foams as electrodes for Li-ion batteries
Major breakthroughs in batteries would require the development of new composite electrode materials, with a precisely controlled nanoscale architecture. However, composites used for energy storage are typi-cally a disordered bulk mixture of different materials, or simple coatings of one material onto another. Wedemonstrate here a new technique to create complex hierarchical electrodes made of multilayers of verti-cally aligned nanowalls of hematite (Fe2O3) alternated with horizontal spacers of reduced graphene oxide(RGO), all deposited on a 3D, conductive graphene foam. The RGO nanosheets act as porous spacers, current collectors and protection against delamination of the hematite. The multilayer composite, formedby up to 7 different layers, can be used with no further processing as an anode in Li-ion batteries, with aspecific capacity of up to 1175μAhcm−2and a capacity retention of 84% after 1000 cycles. Our coatingstrategy gives improved cyclability and rate capacity compared to conventional bulk materials. Our pro-duction method is ideally suited to assemble an arbitrary number of organic–inorganic materials in anarbitrary number of layers
Systemic Amyloidosis with Renal Failure: A Challenging Diagnosis of SAPHO Syndrome
Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a rare, unrecognized and chronic inflammatory disorder
characterized by distinct cutaneous and osteoarticular manifestations. Renal complications are uncommon. We describe the unusual case
of a patient with severe refractory and chronic hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) that progressed to chronic renal failure due to secondary
amyloidosis, presenting with mandibular pain and renal failure. The challenging diagnosis of SAPHO syndrome was made. The purpose of
this case report is to emphasize the need for vigilance, timely recognition and multidisciplinary treatment. The fundamental management of
AA amyloidosis and SAPHO syndrome requires an individualized approach with control of the underlying inflammatory disease
Secondary Parkinsonism Due to a Large Anterior Cranial Fossa Meningioma
Secondary Parkinson’s disease or subacute Parkinson’s may occur after stroke, drug overdose carbon monoxide or manganese toxicity, and rarely owing to a brain tumor. Loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substansia negra pars compacta (SNc), or presence of the proteinaceous inclusions called Lewy bodies are thought to be the cause of Parkinson’s disease. Notwithstanding, in the past few decades, many case reports have been published describing Parkinson’s symptoms following either stroke, ischemia, toxicity, brain hemorrhage or rarely neoplasm
The PolarquEEEst mission: Measuring the cosmic ray flux at the North Pole
The PolarquEEEst mission was designed and realised within the Extreme Energy Events (EEE) Project experiment, a strategic project of “Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche Enrico Fermi”, Rome. PolarquEEEst is
a campaign to measure the cosmic rays flux at the highest latitudes which took place between July and September 2018. The detector used is made of two scintillator planes coupled to Silicon Photo Multipliers (SiPM); it was installed on the Nanuq, a 18 meter sailing boat which, leaving from Iceland, circumnavigated the Svalbard
islands (less than 1000 km from the North Pole) and concluded its cruise in Norway. The trip was carried out within the Polarquest project 1928–2018, an expedition to commemorate the unfortunate mission of the airship ITALIA, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary. Other two identical detectors were installed in Norway and Italy, in order to allow a comparative measurement of the cosmic flux over more than 40 degrees of latitude and also to look for possible long-distance correlations. Here we report the details of the detector and the first results
A view of DNA short sequences rich in guanines like potassium biosensor
Pu23 and Pu27, single strand DNA sequences rich in guanines, can fold forming a G-quadruplex, in the presence of Na+ and K+. A G-quadruplex is a DNA secondary structure made up of at least two tetrads, an array made of four
guanines, stacked on each other. Pu27, the 27-base–long wild-type sequence, is the c-myc transcription repressor. Pu23 is a 23-base–long mutant. In this work Pu27 and Pu23 are tested as watery K+ biosensors, thanks to their K+ affinity, even when Na+ exceeds the K+ concentration. The Pu27 and Pu23 biosensors are assayed in DMEM treated with a potassium solution. DMEM is a common medium where cancer cells can grow. This work shows that Pu27 and Pu23 can sense K+ into treated DMEM folding, according to the G4 parallel conformation. The titration with Na+ does not affect the Pu27 structural stability while, on the contrary, Pu23 displays a less stable folding. At fixed Na+ concentration, Pu27 shows higher sensitivity and better resolution for K+ detection with respect to Pu23; nevertheless, both sequences seem not to be adequate to measure a K+ concentration difference of about 1 mM
Bubble: Experimenting with Feynman’s sum over paths approach in the secondary school
We discuss a teaching experiment on the introduction of elements of quantum physics already at the level of the fourth year of high school (17–18 years old students) using Feynman’s sum over paths approach. More precisely, the educational sequence is constructed on the juxtaposition of the wave and quantum theories of light, and it constitutes an attempt to anticipate the current status of the past, secular debate on the nature of light to young students, while providing them with a unifying perspective on different approaches, models and theories
which are encountered in high school. The experimentation is part of the research on quantum physics education in secondary school conducted by the Physics Education group in Pavia, and it was developed by the author as a thesis work in the context of the IDIFO-6 Master coordinated by the University of Udine. The focus of the work is on the gradual introduction of innovative elements in the traditional high school didactics. Analysis of the experimentation data shows very rich and complex patterns, allowing to identify activities which may be more productive for students and to uncover weak points and student’s difficulties
Pyraclostrobin can mitigate salinity stress in tomato crop
Processing tomato is a widespread crop in the Mediterranean area where often there are problems of high salinity of irrigation water with considerable harmful effects on yield. Pyraclostrobin is a strobilurin based fungicide (PBF) having a broad range of applications. Strobilurins are reported to have biostimulant effect on plant mitigating abiotic stress. Therefore, the objective of this work was to investigate the ability of PBF to improve gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll, activity of antioxidative enzymes as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), yield characteristics, and water use efficiency (WUE) of tomato under salinity.
A two-year research was carried out in Southern Italy, on tomato cv Coronel grown in pots under plastic greenhouse, to compare two soil salinity levels (electrical conductivity, ECe = 1.1 and 5.4 dS m−1) in combination with or without PBF. As expected, salinity had harmful effects on physiological and biochemical parameters of tomato that in turn affected yield and WUE, but improved fruit quality. In fact, salinity reduced fruit mean weight (19.0%) and yield (21.4%), and increased fruit blossom-end rot (55.7%), total soluble solids (18.2%) and dry matter (18.5%) content. Overall, PBF increased leaf chlorophyll content (6.1%) and the activity of SOD, POD, CAT and APX, mainly under salinity. Moreover, it reduced stomatal conductance (12.5%) and transpiration (11.7%), but improved assimilation rate (7.8%) and intrinsic WUE (23.3%), that in turn increased yield (8.1%) and yield WUE (6.5%). The improvement in yield produced by PBF was highest in salt stressed plants. In view of the positive effects of PBF, its use should be promoted in defence programs of tomato crop, above all in areas with salinity problems
