Underground measurement of hydrogen-burning reactions on 17,18O at energies of astrophysical interest
Giant Branch stars are the site of several recirculating and mixing processes. Some of these processes can be traced using the rare, stable 17,18O isotopes. At present, the abundance of 17,18O in Giant Branch stars is affected by their destruction rate through the 17,18O(p,α) 14,15N nuclear reactions. A direct measurement of these two nuclear reactions has been carried out at the underground LUNA accelerator in Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. Final results obtained for the 17O(p,α) 14N reaction, and preliminary results on the 18O(p,α) 15N reaction are reported
Status and perspectives of the PADME experiment
One of the most striking problems of modern physics concerns the explanation of cosmological phenomena, whose behaviour cannot be explained taking into account only visible matter. We can postulate the existence of some kind of matter which does not produce radiation, but gives a gravitational contribution to the Universe: the dark matter. The PADME experiment, that will take place in the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, will study the coupling between ordinary matter and dark matter
Recent results on rare charm decays at LHCb
Rare decays of charmed hadrons are a powerful tool to search New Physics in the up-quark sector, complementary to searches in the strange and bottom hadron systems. In particular, anomalies in the c → u transitions, highly suppressed in the Standard Model, can be investigated in the decays with leptons of opposite charge in the final state. Given the high forward charm-anticharm production crosssection, LHCb is the ideal experiment for this type of studies. Two recent results on the semileptonic decays of the D0 meson and the Λ+ c baryon are presented
The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer Upgrade for HL-LHC
The ATLAS Muon Spectrometer will be heavily modified during the operation shutdown forseen in 2024–2026, for the high-luminosity program of LHC. The trigger and data acquisition system will be completely redesigned, to cope with a level-0 trigger frequency of 1 MHz, and all the readout electronics will be replaced. New generation RPCs and MDTs will be installed in the inner barrel layer, while new TGC triplets will be installed in the transition region (1 < |η| < 1.3). A major upgrade of the power system is also foreseen. This upgrade will complete the spectrometer adjustment to the increasing performances of LHC, started with the New Small Wheel project
Unraveling the unintegrated gluon distribution in the proton via ρ-meson leptoproduction
Sufficiently inclusive processes, like the deep inelastic scattering (DIS), are described in terms of scale-dependent parton distributions, which correspond to the density of partons with a given longitudinal momentum fraction, integrated over the parton transverse momentum. For less inclusive processes, one needs to consider densities unintegrated over the transverse momentum. This work focuses on the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD), describing the probability that a gluon can be emitted by a colliding proton, with definite longitudinal fraction
and transverse momentum. Through the leptoproduction of the ρ-meson HERA, existent models for the UGD will be investigated and compared with experimental data
Intra-Alveolar Haemorrhage Complicating IgA Vasculitis: A Case Report, Literature Review and Discussion of Treatment
Introduction: Immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV) is a small-vessel vasculitis with IgA-dominant immune deposits. IgAV frequently involves
the skin, gastrointestinal tract, joints and kidneys. In contrast to other types of small-vessel vasculitis, IgAV is rarely complicated by intraalveolar haemorrhage (IAH).
Methods/Results: We describe a patient with relapsing bladder cancer who presented with IAH during the course of IgAV successfully treated
with corticosteroids alone.
Conclusion: This case report reminds us that IgAV can manifest with IAH. There are no robust data to support the systematic use of
cyclophosphamide or plasma exchange as first-line therapy for IgAV with IA
The International Expansion of São Paulo’s “Primeiro Comando da Capital” (PCC): notes on the illicit drug trade in South America
This article examines the trajectory of the “Primeiro Comando da Capital” or PCC, a prison-based organized criminal group from Brazil, and its participation in transnational drug trafficking in South America, notably around the Paraguayan-Brazilian border. The article makes use of data from semi-structured interviews, literature review, media and document analysis under the theoretical framework of organised crime. Furthermore, it addresses the issues of drug prohibition, punitive selectivity of the criminal justice system and mass incarceration
Decontamination of Mycotoxin-Contaminated Feedstuffs and Compound Feed
Mycotoxins are known worldwide as fungus-produced toxins that adulterate a wide
heterogeneity of raw feed ingredients and final products. Consumption of mycotoxins-contaminated
feed causes a plethora of harmful responses from acute toxicity to many persistent health disorders
with lethal outcomes; such as mycotoxicosis when ingested by animals. Therefore, the main task for
feed producers is to minimize the concentration of mycotoxin by applying different strategies aimed
at minimizing the risk of mycotoxin effects on animals and human health. Once mycotoxins enter
the production chain it is hard to eliminate or inactivate them. This paper examines the most recent
findings on different processes and strategies for the reduction of toxicity of mycotoxins in animals.
The review gives detailed information about the decontamination approaches to mitigate mycotoxin
contamination of feedstuffs and compound feed, which could be implemented in practice
GIS and remote sensing for post-dictive analysis of archaeological features. A case study from the Etnean region (Sicily)
This article illustrates the potential of multispectral satellite data for archaeological scope in the volcanic area of Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). In particular, by adopting a post-dictive approach, GIS and FOSS technology was used to analyse different indices derived from World-View-2 multispectral data. The selected examples (two circular buildings and a wall-structure) illustrate successes and challenges of our method. The results indicate that NIR-1 and RED-EDGE are undoubtedly the most useful, while NDVI and SRI are the best performing indices
Multisensor-multiscale approach in studying the proto-historic settlement of Bostel in northern Italy
This paper presents the combined use of UAV-derived Digital Elevation Models, optical and IR imaging and multispectral satellite images to produce a (micro)topographic survey of the proto-historic village of Bostel, in the municipality of Rotzo (province of Vicenza, Italy). It aims to improve our knowledge of the structural organization of the site. Different vegetation indices were calculated from the multiband images to enhance the grass and soil-marks in open field, allowing the identification of buried structures. Close-range images were acquired with a commercial DJI Phantom 2 and a customized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), equipped with both high-resolution digital and IR cameras. Structure from Motion was used on the acquired data to create digital elevation models (DEM) of sample areas, which were enhanced by using different data visualization techniques. Remote sensing analyses were then combined with fieldwork data, producing a complex environmental model. The houses found during the excavations seem to be embedded in a framework of structures for the sake of space organization, defense and control. Moreover, the presence of a dense network of terraces and buildings, running right up to the south-eastern ridge of the promontory, confirms the existence of an intense human occupation of the entire area
