    The Mini-EUSO telescope on board the International Space Station: Launch and first observations

    Mini-EUSO is a telescope that observes the Earth from the International Space Station by recording ultraviolet emissions (290–430 nm) of cosmic, atmospheric and terrestrial origin with a field of view of 44◦ and on different time scales, from a few microseconds upwards. The scientific objectives are manifold and span several fields of research: Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays, atmospheric phenomena such as ELVEs, meteors and meteoroids, maps of the Earth night-time ultraviolet emissions and others. In this paper we will describe the instrument, the launching phase and we will discuss some of its first observations

    Development of a web application for monitoring solar activity and cosmic radiation

    The flux of cosmic rays (CRs) in the heliosphere is subjected to remarkable time variations caused by the 11-year cycle of solar activity. To help the study of this effect, we have developed a web application (Heliophysics Virtual Observatory) that collects real-time data on solar activity, interplanetary plasma, and charged radiation from several space missions or observatories. As we will show, our application can be used to visualize, manipulate, and download updated data on sunspots, heliospheric magnetic fields, solar wind, and neutron monitors counting rates. Data and calculations are automatically updated on daily basis. A nowcasting for the energy spectrum of CR protons near-Earth is also provided using calculations and real-time neutron monitor data as input

    Testing a mobile laboratory at the Aeolian Museum of Lipari (Messina) for the 3D survey and the chemical characterization of archaeological materials: practice and further developments

    In the last decade portable devices for the analysis of Cultural Heritage (e.g. laser-scanners, spectroscopes, XRF) have reached levels of reliability that can replace benchtop instruments and enable in situ survey. One of the most effective application is the digitization and diagnosis of artworks preserved inside museums. Indeed, moving art objects or finds from the place of preservation to specific laboratories can often be difficult for several reasons such as fragility, large size, risk of damage, lack of authorizations etc. The paper shows the results of a collaboration between the IPCF-CNR of Messina and the Archaeological Museum of Lipari aimed at creating a mobile laboratory or chemical analysis and 3D digitization of artefacts presenting different challenges. The activities have been carried out using two high-performing and non-contact tools: a laser-scanner arm by Faro (sometimes in combination with an external camera) and a handheld Raman spectrometer by Bruker. The test was performed to plan more extensive and systematic analyses of other materials preserved in Lipari, which will be soon examined as part of an ongoing agreement between the two institutions. The results of this test clearly demonstrate the advantages, both in terms of scientific results and dissemination, that can be achieved when science and the humanities dialogue for a common goal

    Vasopressin is involved in cardiovascular homeostasis that can influence coronary perfusion. It is commonly used as a local vasoconstricting agent during gynaecological procedures.We present a case of cardiac arrest and inverse Takotsubo features following intramyometrial vasopressin administration during myomectomy. The patient was successfully resuscitated and recovered completely. Cardiac presentation was compatible with inverse Takotsubo cardiomyopathy that could have been triggered by high-dose vasopressin-induced coronary vasoconstriction. The patient’s cardiac function resolved with no long-term sequelae.Takotsubo cardiomyopathy usually results from an excessive catecholaminergic surge. High-dose vasopressin-induced coronary vasospasm could have been the mechanism underlying the clinical presentation in our patient

    In secondary syphilis, Treponema pallidum can spread to the lungs. A new case is described of a patient with multiple excavated subpleural pulmonary nodules, a rare localization of secondary syphilis. Despite the numerous pulmonary samples analysed in the literature, T. pallidum is rarely visualised directly on bronchial fibroscopy or biopsy. The diagnosis of secondary syphilis is suspected from historical and physical findings and confirmed by high values obtained from non-treponemal tests

Clinical manifestations are diverse and can vary from mild respiratory symptoms to severe hypoxic respiratory failure. In severe cases, infection can cause gastrointestinal, renal, cardiac, neurological and haematological complications and result in multi-organ failure. There are very few reports of parapneumonic effusion in patients with COVID-19. The pathogenesis is not well understood even though it seems to be multifactorial, with hypersensitivity as a major contributor.
