Advancements and applications of space borne of remote sensing in climate change research: A scoping review
This scoping review explores the progress and applications of space-borne remote sensing within the realm of climate change research. It systematically compiles significant advancements in remote sensing technology, with a focus on its application for tracking diverse indicators of climate change. The review performs a thorough examination of various sensor types and technologies, evaluates the challenges and limitations encountered, and considers methods to overcome these obstacles. By adopting an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, the study connects the gap between technological progress and its policy implications, alongside mitigation and adaptation strategies. This offers a holistic view of the pivotal role of remote sensing in the study of climate change, providing valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners alike
Eggs, larval morphology development and behavioral changes of jade perch (scortum barcoo) larvae
This study examined the embryonic development of Jade perch (Scortum barcoo) during the early larval stage, emphasizing morphology, sensory organ development, and behavioral changes. Artificial reproduction was conducted using one mature female (1.0 ± 0.0 kg) and two mature males (1.0 ± 0.8 kg) through hormone-induced spawning. The fertilization and hatching rates were recorded as 83.4 ± 0.45% and 86.4 ± 0.78% respectively, and fertilized egg size was 2.73 ± 0.3 mm. Hatching occurred at 20:20 hours after fertilization (hAF) under 27.3 ± 0.7 ℃ and the size of newly hatched larvae was 2.79 ± 0.05 mm, growing up to 4.73 ± 0.07 mm by 90 hours after hatching (hAH). Morphological developments were observed as follows: eye and fin formation at 6 hAH, noticeable pigmentation at 30 hAH, mouth opening at 36 hAH, jaw movement at 42 hAH, and anus opening at 60 hAH. Sensory organs development was observed as follows: lens formation and inner ear formation at 6 hAH, eye pigmentation and olfactory pit formation at 30 hAH. Behavioral changes were observed as follows: onset of vertical swimming at 12 hAH, onset of horizontal swimming at 18 hAH, with larvae showing positive phototaxis and rheotaxis at 30 hAH, and first feeding starting at 72 hAH. This study concludes that Jade perch undergoes normal development, and these primary data can be used to establish a rearing protocol to further enhance the overall growth performance in captivity
Knowledge and awareness on sustainable development among university students
Sustainable development has attracted great attention lately. As the human population increases, the demand for natural resources for development increases, and this has caused the depletion of non-renewable resources and damage to the environment. Therefore, there is a clear need for global action to create a more sustainable future. The future depends on the students at present because they are the future leaders. The main objective of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and awareness of the concept of sustainable development among the students at the University of Malaysia Sabah (UMS). A set of questionnaires was developed for this preliminary survey. 158 students were randomly engaged to be involved in this study. Based on the findings, the students’ knowledge and awareness level is considered high, and the average values range from approximately 70% to 91%. Findings also showed that terms such as “Eco-Campus,” “Earth Hour,” “Earth Day,” and “Green Energy” are keywords that most of the respondents are familiar with. It was interesting to note that there were still a handful of students unaware of the term “Sustainable Development Goals” at the time of the study (the year 2019). In conclusion, generally, the students have sufficient knowledge and awareness of sustainable development
Do investors value block holder diversity? Evidence from an emerging market
This study examines the relationship between block holder diversity and firm value in Malaysia, an emerging market characterized by principal-principal conflicts. In contrast to recent evidence from the United States documenting negative effects, the analysis hypothesizes that block holder diversity is positively associated with firm value in emerging markets where block holders with divergent interests may be less likely to collude for private benefit extraction. Using a comprehensive dataset of Malaysian publicly listed firms from 2002 to 2019, three distinct measures of block holder diversity are constructed. The baseline analysis and a series of robustness checks reveal a robust positive relationship between block holder diversity and Tobin’s Q. These contrasting findings between developed and emerging markets highlight how the relationship between diverse block holder structures and firm value varies with institutional environment
From story to leadership: Inspiring children through Tavantang, the brave heart of Borneo
This study examines Tavantang, The Brave Heart of Borneo as a reflection of the cultural values, heroism, and identity of the indigenous peoples of Borneo while emphasizing its power to inspire children to become future leaders and contributors to society. Through qualitative textual analysis supported by relevant ethnographic and literary sources, the research explores how the narrative conveys themes of bravery, kinship, leadership, and harmony with nature. The findings highlight Tavantang as not only a tale of individual courage but also a symbolic representation of communal resilience, integrity, and respect for ancestral traditions. By situating the story within the broader framework of Bornean folklore, this study underscores its significance in preserving local heritage, nurturing leadership values, and fostering a spirit of inspiration among children to lead their communities with compassion and courage
Wildlife, livestock, and zoonotic threats: Advancing one health bio surveillance in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo
The emergence of zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, infections transmitted between animals and humans, is a growing global concern, particularly in ecologically diverse regions such as Borneo. Environmental changes, including habitat loss, climate variation, and increased human animal contact, often drive these diseases, leading to outbreaks that threaten both public health and biodiversity. In response, bio surveillance has become an essential tool for monitoring and managing these risks. Within the One Health framework, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, bio surveillance involves the systematic tracking of diseases across sectors to enable early detection and timely response. Understanding how these risks manifest in regions like Borneo requires a closer look at its ecological history and the evolving pressures on its environment
A standardized protocol for the detection of arboviruses in different Aedes mosquito species in North Borneo Sabah, Malaysia
Arboviruses, including dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses, are mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and pose a threat to public health. The viruses are transmitted by the primary vector, Aedes aegypti, which is more commonly found in urban environments. However, with increasing urbanization, the overlap of rural and forested areas where different Aedes species are found could also contribute to transmission. Nevertheless, most extraction methods focus on human blood samples or on Ae. aegypti, which limits standardization of virus detection in a variety of less common Aedes populations, especially sylvatic species. In this study, we demonstrated a standardized protocol for extracting sufficient amounts of RNA for detection from a single mosquito sample. We validated the protocol by extracting arboviruses from six different Aedes species collected in the field in Sabah, Malaysia: Ae. aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. poecilus, Ae. butleri, Ae. niveus, and Ae. vexans. Multiplex real-time PCR detection yielded consistent cycle threshold (Ct) values across species (range: 18.9–40.3), with a positivity cut-off of Ct < 41. Our results show that this protocol improves current practice by extending the target sample to different Aedes mosquito species, ultimately contributing to more efficient virus detection and supporting more comprehensive surveillance, even in ecologically diverse environments
Bridging cultures in history education: A comparative analysis of teaching methods in China and Malaysia's universities
This study comparatively analyzes university history teaching methods in China and Malaysia and explores their efforts in overcoming cultural differences and improving learning effects. China's history teaching is deeply influenced by Confucian educational concepts and tends to be teacher-centered, emphasizing the memory and inheritance of knowledge; while Malaysia, due to its cultural diversity, has gradually adopted a more student-centered teaching model that emphasizes interaction and Participatory teaching methods. Researchers employed a synthesis-sources method in this study. The researchers adopted a comprehensive source approach in this study, integrating multiple documents and cases to provide a comprehensive perspective. Although the educational backgrounds and cultural traditions of the two countries are very different, the study found that they are both committed to promoting students' dynamic understanding of local and global history through innovative teaching strategies to meet the challenges of contemporary education. Interactive discussions in Malaysian classrooms stimulate critical thinking and enhance learning engagement through the exchange of ideas among students. Collaborative analysis projects in Chinese history teaching encourage students to work in groups and share insights, cultivating teamwork and in-depth understanding skills, all of which reflect the characteristics of a dynamic learning environment
Institutional support and LMS implementation among academicians in vocational higher education
This study explores the influence of institutional support on the effectiveness of Learning Management System (LMS) implementation among academicians in vocational higher education institutions. Utilizing a mixed methods approach, the research combines primary quantitative and qualitative data collected online—with the aid of AI-assisted tools for data gathering and processing—with a secondary data analysis of institutional records, LMS usage logs, and related documentation. Findings reveal that institutional support, particularly in the form of technical assistance, professional development, and administrative policy, plays a critical role in shaping educators’ engagement with LMS platforms. The study highlights the importance of aligning institutional strategies with technological adoption to enhance teaching and learning outcomes in vocational settings
Inhibitory effect of Trichoderma spp. Causing Green Mold Disease on the Edible Mushroom Pleurotus pulmonarias' and Pleurotus floridanus
The popular cultivated edible oyster mushrooms in Malaysia, Pleurotus pulmonarias' (grey oyster mushroom) and Pleurotus floridanus (white oyster mushroom), are susceptible to green mold disease caused by Trichoderma spp. The decline of the quality and yield production of the mushrooms up to 100% has been frequently observed due to infection by Trichoderma. The objective of this study was to investigate the competitive inhibition of Trichoderma spp. isolated from the farm with Pleurotus spp. Nine strains of Trichoderma were cultured in vitro with Pleurotus on potato dextrose agar and the radial growth as well as mycelial diameter growth were recorded. The direct plate assay results showed that T. koningiopsis and T. harzianum were the most pathogenic strains against P. pulmonarias' and P. floridanus by overgrowing and replacing the mycelia, respectively, due to space competition and nutrient suppression. The bi-plate Petri dish approach for assessing contactless inhibition of Trichoderma spp. against Pleurotus spp. demonstrated that T. asper Ellum, T. ghanense, and T. koningiopsis were able to cross over the partition and inhibit P. pulmonarias' mycelium. Meanwhile, inverted plate assay demonstrated that T. ghanense and T. reesei inhibited P. pulmonarias' mycelia, respectively, indicating contactless inhibition of Pleurotus by Trichoderma. When tested with P. floridanus, only T. ghanense demonstrated inhibition in bi-plate Petri dish method and inverted plate assay. In summary, all nine Trichoderma spp. suppressed Pleurotus growth in varying degrees. Thus, besides competing with mushroom mycelia for nutrients and space, Trichoderma sp. could also release volatile organic compounds that act without direct contact
