The geopolitics of expert knowledge: analysing the European Commission’s role and influence in Indonesian higher education

    Get PDF
Building on a rich set of policy documents and interview data, and using the concept of the epistemic infrastructure, the article focuses on an analysis of how European HE expert actors became the preferred advisers for Indonesia’s HE quality assurance system. As the article shows, working towards the quality assurance of higher education institutions in Indonesia serves not only for the apparent purpose of offering technocratic and rational solutions to improving HE governance and delivery, but also for the parallel aim of expanding the role and influence of European higher education in other world regions and zones of influence. Given the role and identity of the EU as a political project, as well as the specific mission that has been assigned to European universities as custodians and carriers of European liberal values, the work of European experts in Indonesia has geopolitical value and significance; it thus allows us to examine the geopolitics of expert knowledge production as a new and complex space of interactions, possibilities and contradictions that calls for a nuanced and careful analytical approach

Sustainable, 3D-printed liquid metal reprogrammable resonator towards fully circular RF sensing and identification

    No full text
Microwave resonators are widely used for spectral RF sensing and identification, but their sustainability and circularity are hindered by a lack of reconfigurability. Herein, we present the first sustainable, fully recyclable, and reprogrammable microwave sensing resonator, based on liquid metal and additively manufactured, modular multilayered fluidic channels. The proposed structure leverages a capacitively coupled 3D-printed liquid resonator layer over a microstrip transmission line layer, with additional sensing layers integrated vertically above the recodable identification liquid Galinstan resonators. The resonators’ layer and its subsequent sensing layers are printed using semi-transparent stereolithography (SLA) resin. Five identification bits are implemented using refillable resonators, allowing the resonator to be recoded by filling or emptying liquid metal within different channels. Circularity is demonstrated over 12 cycles, with the liquid metal recovered with under 1.5% waste at the end of life. The encoding and sensing notch filters are implemented using five bandstop resonators at 2–7 GHz. The resonator is demonstrated in two exemplary sensing applications, including real-permittivity-based liquid detection and touch sensing, showing the potential uses in human–RFID interaction

A theoretical framework for platform-to-platform cooperation: a multi-case study from China

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study explores the factors that influence platform-to-platform cooperation (PPC) and designs a theoretical framework for platform research. Design/methodology/approach: This multi-case study includes a combination of exploratory and explanatory case studies. Findings: From the internal factor perspective, channel integration capability, technology-based order matching capability and service innovation capability positively affects the PPC. From the perspective of external factors, the impact of a new platform entry on the PPC depends on market power and complementarities between platforms in the supply and value chains. Diversity of demand also has a positive effect on the PPC, which is moderated by network externalities. It is worth noting that the incumbent platform prefers to diversify its services for collaborating platforms with a higher level of cooperation. In addition, the higher diversity of demand, the stronger the service innovation capability, which indirectly impacts cooperation positively. Originality/value: The PPC has gained immense popularity in recent years. However, no scholars have investigated the factors influencing the PPC decisions, which warrants further exploration. This study sheds light on the factors and mechanisms that influence the PPC from both internal and external perspectives

    Judgment's aimless heart

    Get PDF
It's often thought that when we reason to new judgments in inference, we aim at believing the truth, and that this aim of ours can explain important psychological and normative features of belief. I reject this picture: the structure of aimed activity shows that inference is not guided by a truth-aim. This finding clears the way for a positive understanding of how epistemic goods feature in our doxastic lives. We can indeed make sense of many of our inquisitive and deliberative activities as undertaken in pursuit of such goods; but the evidence-guided inferences in which those activities culminate will require a different theoretical approach

Infammation-related proteins support diagnosis of infammatory bowel disease and are modifed by exclusive enteral nutrition in children with Crohn’s disease, especially of ileal phenotype

    Get PDF
Background: The immunological effects of treatment with exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in Crohn’s disease (CD) remain unknown. We characterized the plasma levels of infammation-related proteins (IRPs) in children with CD and ulcerative colitis (UC) compared with noninfammatory controls (non-IBD) and explored the effect of EEN in CD. Methods: Ninety-two IRPs were quantifed using Olink proteomics in children with CD (n = 53), UC (n = 11), and non-IBD (n = 19). For 18 children with active CD, IRPs were measured before and after 8 weeks of EEN. Relationships with disease phenotype and response to EEN were studied. Results: Compared with non-IBD, patients with active UC and CD had different levels of 27 (24 raised, 3 decreased) and 29 (26 raised, 3 decreased) IRPs, respectively. Exclusive enteral nutrition modifed the levels of 19 IRPs (13 increased, 6 decreased including CCL23, interleukin-24, interleukin-6, and MMP-1). More pronounced changes in IRP profle were observed in patients with ileal involvement and a ≥50% decrease in fecal calprotectin during EEN compared with those with colonic involvement and a <50% decrease in fecal calprotectin, respectively. A machine-learning model utilizing baseline IRP profle predicted response to EEN with a sensitivity of 89%, specifcity of 57%, and accuracy of 73%. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin was the most important IRP in the model, this being higher in responders. Conclusions: Infammation-related proteins may be useful in the differential diagnosis of IBD. Exclusive enteral nutrition extensively modulated IRPs levels in children with active CD with more pronounced effects observed in patients who showed a reduction in FC and had ileal disease involvement

Isolation of an infectious mammalian chu-like virus from tumor cells of the endangered Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii)

    Get PDF
Jingchuvirales are single-stranded negative-sense RNA viruses classified into five families, including the Chuviridae. Jingchuviruses were first found in invertebrates but have more recently been identified in fish, reptiles, and mammals, as well as a basal chordate (a tunicate). Endogenous viral elements (EVEs) of jingchuviruses have also been identified in fish, placental mammals, and marsupials. Although the chuviruses identified in fish and reptiles are classified within a single genus (Piscichuvirus, Chuviridae), that the exogenous and endogenous viral sequences from vertebrates occupy diverse phylogenetic positions is indicative of multiple host-jumping and virus endogenization events. We previously identified Tasmanian devil chu-like virus (TDCV) in a tumor cell line from the endangered Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) that has experienced dramatic population declines due to two independent transmissible cancerous clones—devil facial tumor 1 (DFT1) and devil facial tumor 2 (DFT2). Herein, by screening primary tumor tissues and tumor cell lines from the Tasmanian devil, we isolated TDCV from a culture of Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) cells. Cell infection experiments demonstrated active virus replication in Tasmanian devil tumor cells but not mosquito cells. The absence of viral replication in fibroblasts and kidney cells in vitro and the lack of RNA detection in several organs suggested that replication was associated with tumor cells. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that TDCV likely represents a novel virus family. This study demonstrates the capacity of jingchuviruses to infect mammalian cells and provides in vitro avenues to understand the biology of TDCV and its association with tumor cell infection
