    Nonviolence Education as a practice of rehumanization: Can self-enquiry practices positively reshape teachers’relationship with their social world?

    The underlying philosophy of nonviolence encourages practitioners to recognize the humanity in those who are different or thought of as less valuable. Developing empathy is a key in that recognition, and this is why it was a key component of a nonviolence training program undertaken with trainee teachers in Chile. Participants engaged in a series of exercises aimed at fostering empathy and compassion, informed by the principles of contemplative pedagogy. Challenges notwithstanding, results show success in recognizing the many shared elements of our human experience and in helping participants develop feelings of warmth and closeness towards others

    Crumbling cliffs and intergenerational cohesivity: a new climate praxis model for engaged community action on accelerated coastal change

    Climate change is widely accepted as an existential threat that requires urgent action globally, regionally and locally. Despite the challenge there remains a lack of awareness among many in society regarding the scale of the environmental changes and projected impact(s) on lives and livelihoods. Despite climate change being a prominent topic in politics and activism, broader engagement with the climate crisis in sections of society, particularly in disadvantaged communities, remains lower than across society as whole. Part of these issues relate to unequal access to information and limited resources in some communities, which together contributes to a knowledge gap. Moreover, disinformation campaigns, fake news and biases in media further complicate understanding of the climate crisis across sections of society. Here we report on the INSECURE project, which had the aim of engaging a disadvantaged coastal community that is very much on the frontline of climate change. The engagement was advanced through creative methodologies and intergenerational dialogues to bridge the gap between climate science, knowledge and public understanding through innovative ways to educate and communicate the issues of climate change. By considering individuals' attitudes, beliefs, cultural backgrounds and lived experiences, the project seeks to overcome misconceptions and confusion. The results show the importance of knowledge and how knowledge gaps can act as a barrier for individuals in engaging with the climate crisis. The results additionally highlight how employing new and creative communication approaches can empower a disadvantaged coastal community with the understanding necessary to address climate change within their local context(s) and thus ensure that communities can be better prepared and equipped to face the future impacts of climate change

    Philip Schlesinger is the former director of the Center for Cultural Policy Research (CCPR) and senior professor at the Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy (CREATe) at the University of Glasgow.     Exploring the nexus between institutions and innovation: a systematic literature review

    Although innovation is a critical determinant of sustained economic growth, there are still gaps in our understanding of what drives innovation. Given this, we conduct a systematic literature review to illustrate the role of formal and informal institutions in innovation, identify the relevant theoretical cornerstones and current trends and synthesize the research developed in this field. The review incorporates both qualitative and quantitative studies published between 2011 and 2023. We propose avenues for future research, which, together with the synthesis of the bibliometric findings, constitute the main contribution of this systematic review

    Patients prefer easy adverse event reporting: Observational study within clinical trial

    Background: Digital intervention safety is crucial for regulatory approval and clinical adoption. However, the evaluation and reporting of adverse events (AEs) in clinical trials are often insufficient. Digital qualitative self-reporting could enhance the detection of AEs, but patient preferences for using such channels remain understudied. Methods: This observational study was conducted in Finland between 2022 and 2024 within a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of Meliora , a game-based digital intervention for patients living with major depressive disorder. We assessed the preferences of 1001 patients for self-reporting AEs across four channels: a prompted, within-intervention questionnaire (CORTO: Contextual, One-item, Repeated, Timely, Open-ended), a Jira questionnaire, email, and phone. Results: 148 (14.8%) patients reported AEs during the study. We found a significant imbalance between the channels: 11.3% ( n = 113) of patients reported AEs using CORTO, 4.1% ( n = 41) using email, 1.1% ( n = 11) using Jira, and 0.4% ( n = 4) using phone. Conclusions: These findings reveal that patients prefer low-effort methods for reporting AEs and are more likely to report AEs via a prompted, within-intervention questionnaire (CORTO) than through other methods. Integrating qualitative self-report channels into digital interventions may enhance AE detection rates, improve clinical trial safety monitoring, and support post-market surveillance

    Myelin mapping in patients with rheumatoid arthritis-related fatigue: a TBSS-MTR study of integrity

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients frequently report fatigue, which notably diminishes their quality of life. Emerging research points to a correlation between inflammation-induced fatigue and brain structural alterations. This study evaluates the variance in myelin integrity among patients with RA-related fatigue, investigating the potential of magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) as a biomarker, in comparison with healthy controls. A prospective cohort analysis was conducted comprised 60 RA patients with fatigue, categorized into active (  = 30) and non-active (  = 30) disease states, alongside 20 healthy controls (HC). A 3 Tesla MRI system was utilized to perform diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetization transfer imaging (MTI) sequences. MTR maps were generated using in-house MATLAB code and co-registered with DTI data using SPM8. These were then analyzed through tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) with threshold-free cluster enhancement (TFCE) and corrected for multiple comparisons. MTR values were assessed using Randomize from the FSL toolkit, applying a general linear model (GLM) for voxel-wise analysis and TFCE for p-value generation, with family-wise error (FWE) control (  < .05) for multiple comparisons. The RF group exhibited significantly lower myelin integrity (TFCE, < .05) compared to HCs, particularly in the middle cerebellar peduncle and splenium of the corpus callosum, with no marked difference between active and non-active RA disease statuses. There is a discernible disparity in myelin integrity between RA patients with fatigue and healthy individuals, suggesting microstructural white matter alterations that are congruent with DTI findings. This study reveals that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with fatigue exhibit significantly lower myelin integrity, particularly in the middle cerebellar peduncle and splenium of the corpus callosum, compared to healthy controls. Notably, this finding was consistent regardless of the active or non-active status of the RA disease, highlighting persistent white matter alterations in this patents cohort. The research demonstrates that magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) imaging can effectively map microstructural changes in RA patients with fatigue, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for assessing white matter integrity in this condition. While it does not establish a direct causal relationship, it provides valuable insights into the role of MTR mapping in understanding brain alterations in patients with fatigue-related RA

    Tailoring cardiovascular risk prediction to females

    Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in females worldwide. In this review, we provide insights into how sex differences may affect traditional risk factors associated with ASCVD, and give an overview of non-traditional risk factors that have the potential to enhance cardiovascular risk prediction in females. We review clinically applied cardiovascular risk estimation systems, discussing the integration of promising risk factors within these systems. We also explore the role of novel approaches and future directions to refine primary prevention of ASCVD in females. The development of ASCVD varies by sex and age; therefore, cardiovascular risk estimation systems should incorporate both sex and age interactions with risk factors to improve ASCVD risk estimates. As the incidence of non-ASCVD (such as heart failure and arrhythmias) in females continues to rise, it is crucial to adopt a more holistic approach to risk assessment that extends beyond ASCVD outcomes. This review highlights the need for further studies on female-prevalent diseases and female-specific factors that may refine cardiovascular risk estimation in young females. Raising awareness is crucial to ensure studies include individuals from deprived areas and ethnic minorities, as more insights on the intersection between sex and social determinants of health will enhance understanding of the underlying mechanisms of ASCVD risk prevention in females. Finally, taking steps to improve and standardise data on female-specific risk factors throughout a female’s life course could improve preventive cardiovascular care for females
