The aesthetics of collaborative research management: human-centred approaches to interdisciplinary research in the age of AI
The chapter reflects on the transformative potential of interdisciplinary research in the age of AI, responding to the challenge of epistemic acceleration—the rapid reconfiguration of knowledge systems that, if allowed, have potential to marginalise embodied experience. Drawing on humanistic management and management aesthetics frameworks, the chapter considers how universities might cultivate research cultures that are not only innovative but also ethically grounded and aesthetically attuned. Through a qualitative case study at the University of Glasgow, an analysis of initiatives such as ArtsLab, the Cross-College initiative, and the Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, with the help of some conceptual lenses, including Third Space theory, Queer theory, and disruptive innovation is undertaken. Analysis shows that conceptual and physical spaces, ethical collaboration, and creative disruption support rich, relational research ecologies. The chapter critiques combative metaphors in interdisciplinarity, making the case instead for a language of hospitality and care. In doing so, the human at the heart of collaborative inquiry should be reasserted. This chapter may be of particular interest to academic researchers, research support professionals, and advocates of ethical scholarship, serving as a resource for those seeking to sustain and promote humane, innovative, and aesthetically attentive research cultures in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence
Global Musicology: Music Histories from Elsewhere
This is an edited volume of music histories—of peoples, places, and institutions—that refuses to shy away from the geopolitical realities of a global musicology. With an ironic undertone to the “elsewhere” in the book’s title, the volume’s contributors grapple with the ethical and democratizing potentials of musicology’s recent “global turn.” The book’s primary objective is to center perspectives from outside the Euro-American mainstream to create a material difference to the frequent scarcity of non-Western scholarship in the Euro-American conception and practice of music studies. By bringing together a small group of scholars’ work in a more readily available space given by a sizable Anglo-American publisher, the book aims to enable more multidirectional exchanges and connections to take place in the future

ci unc is a musical composition for shakuhachi and SuperCollider with ambisonic sound processing. It comprises a framework for improvisation, supplementing the shakuhachi sound through live sampling and live spatial audio playback from a laptop. Material played on the shakuhachi is expanded and developed through various forms of spectral and temporal processing to create evolving, enveloping textures that surround the audience and the player, allowing them to dwell in the resulting sonic environment. The piece explores how live processing can be tailored to a style of improvising that extends conventions of gesture, timbral inflection and patterning found in the traditional honkyoku repertoire. The sound design is led by this reconfiguration of honkyoku-derived elements
Neoliberal legacy intellectuals and the COVID-19 pandemic: Libertarian versus technocratic legitimation
There are unanswered questions about how the COVID-19 pandemic intersects with the trajectory of capitalist institutional and ideological development. We analysed the policy reports, editorials, blog posts and other statements of non-party institutions in the US/UK, the geographical heartland of earlier phases of neoliberal intellectual dominance. In relation to lockdowns, masking and vaccination, we found caveated support for time-limited curbs on economic freedoms. This finding cautions against equating neoliberal intellectual leadership during the pandemic with an ideology of the primacy of freedom as non-interference; insofar as the state was enforcing the demobilization of economy and society, many neoliberal legacy intellectuals accepted temporary curbs on enterprise. This suggests secondary puzzles of how actors and institutions explicitly invested in capitalist liberalization rationalize emergency measures that actively intervene to demobilize the capitalist economy
Multifunctional Fe-doped MOF-808 nanocomposites for chemo/chemodynamic synergistic therapy
Theranostic nanomedicines combining targeted drug delivery and emerging therapeutic modalities with diagnosis are a rapidly evolving field in cancer therapy. In addition to conventional drug delivery, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), consisting of metal ions/clusters and multitopic organic ligands, have been recently highlighted as ideal candidates for chemodynamic therapy (CDT) where active metal ions can be integrated at inorganic secondary building units or coordinated to linkers to act as CDT catalysts. Metal doping provides a potential approach to endow archetypal MOFs with enhanced CDT efficacy; herein, a novel PEGylated Fe-doped MOF-808 is reported, which is embedded with ultrasmall gold nanoparticles and manganese ions, can deliver carboplatin (CA) and achieve chemotherapeutic-chemodynamic (CT/CDT) synergistic therapy. 2D and 3D in vitro experiments demonstrate the synergistic therapeutic efficacy of CT and CDT, while the nanocomposite also shows magnetic resonance imaging potential. Therefore, this work provides a novel protocol to construct multi-metal doped MOFs as promising candidates in diagnostic and multimodal therapeutic applications

Fully GPU-accelerated, matrix-free immersed boundary method for complex fiber-reinforced hyperelastic cardiac models
The immersed boundary (IB) method has become a leading approach in cardiac fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling due to its ability to handle large deformations and complex geometries without requiring mesh regeneration. However, the use of nonlinear, fiber-reinforced hyperelastic materials for modeling soft cardiac tissues introduces challenges in computational efficiency, particularly due to the additional projection steps required for stability in the IB framework. These steps often involve sparse matrix storage and computation, which can degrade GPU performance. In this work, we present a fully GPU-accelerated, matrix-free IB method for FSI in anatomically realistic cardiac models, which novelly integrates established components into a unified, GPU-optimized system. By employing nodal coupling, our method eliminates the need for projection operations in the finite element space. Additionally, we solve the Navier-Stokes equations using Chorin’s projection method combined with a matrix-free geometric multigrid solver, ensuring the entire FSI algorithm remains matrix-free and highly compatible with GPU acceleration. Our implementation features several GPU-specific optimizations, including the use of constant memory to store values of nodal basis functions and their derivatives at quadrature points, and texture memory to efficiently implement the semi-Lagrangian discretization of convection terms. These innovations maximize GPU utilization while preserving the complex mechanical behavior of soft cardiac tissue. Benchmark tests demonstrate that our GPU-accelerated solver achieves a 50x -100x speedup compared to a 20-core CPU implementation, with comparable accuracy. Critically, this performance enables clinically viable cardiac valve FSI simulations to be completed within a few hours on a single consumer-grade GPU-an achievement that was previously infeasible using traditional CPU-based frameworks
Understanding decision-making around human and livestock health in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic literature review
Household decisions shape health outcomes in subsistence farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where human wellbeing is closely linked to livestock productivity. We conducted a systematic review, guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), of 135 primary studies from Embase, Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Using the Household Production of Health (HPH) framework, we structured research questions, extracted and synthesised evidence and identified health interventions in human and livestock health in SSA. We coded decision loci (sole vs joint decision-making) and characterised their prevalence, context and determinants of household health outcomes. Sole decisions dominated (40 % of human studies, 42 % of livestock studies) with men making the majority of the decisions, especially in livestock health, while joint decisions were less common (27 %, 32 % respectively) and focused on maternal, neonatal and child health. Women’s decision-making power tended to increase with education, income and urban residence, while male authority was greater in rural areas where fewer income-earning opportunities for women prevail. The two HPH frameworks are tightly linked as behaviours that improve livestock health and productivity benefit nutrition, income and access to care for household members. We recommend gender- responsive, One Health policies that support women’s control in areas of existing responsibility and engage men as active partners in shared decision-making within households to reduce inequalities. These efforts should be supported by progress towards universal health coverage, functioning health insurance schemes and accessible veterinary services to reduce inequalities and within-household trade-offs, and to improve health and livelihood resilience in SSA
