Get PDFEconomic crises have triggered a boom in liberal discourses in the region, with a notable emergence of an anachronistic far-right movement that defends anti-rights, denialist and neoliberal ideologies. Of note is the experience of Brazil, where Bolsonarism made significant advances against the country’s scientific sector through budget cuts, hostility towards researchers,and anti-scientific rhetoric, which had a dramatic impact on the country’s scientific and technological landscape. Under the leadership of Jair Bolsonaro, this agenda of rejection of scientific knowledge had a disastrous impact during the pandemic. Currently, Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, considers Bolsonaro as a reference, sharing the ideological baggage of the Brazilian denialist. This trend is not immune to the global rise of disinformation campaigns aimed at discrediting scientific consensus and evidence-based policies. In line with what is happening in other parts of the world, Argentina has seen a significant growth in anti-science movements in recent years, driven by a strong reliance on social media. These movements deny and discredit scientific consensus, clinical trials, and academic articles. We have observed direct attacks on prestigious institutions in our science and technology system, such as Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), based on the distortion of research results, particularly in the social sciences, or through the dissemination of fake news on social media. In some cases, these attacks occurred in the context of budget cuts to the R&D system. Here I address a threat to Argentine science in the context of the current government cycle, highlighting the importance of publicly funded science
Integridad contextual como marco conceptual para la protección de la privacidad en medios digitales [Contextual integrity as a conceptual framework to protect privacy on digital media]
Get PDFThis text delves into the concept of ‘contextual integrity’, a benchmark developed by Helen Nissenbaum aimed at protecting users’ privacy when interacting with sociotechnical systems. Her work on privacy and surveillance has been applied to address a huge variety of issues related to the collection of personal data on digital media, be it on social networks, by search engines such as Google, big data technologies or facial recognition systems. Nissenbaum offers a comprehensive approach by starting from the premise that privacy protection is linked to the users’ understanding of information flows governing each digital context. In doing so, she proposes a fluid approach to privacy protection, avoiding the task of defining any context provided by technology, thus creating a benchmark which can be applied to any cultural or changing conception of privacy. This benchmark has also influenced regulations on personal data, such as the GDPR, and on information security
ChatGPT Search as a tool for scholarly tasks: evolution or devolution?
Get PDFChatGPT Search was launched on October 31 by OpenAI as a new AI-powered search engine. Among its features, it stands out for its ability to retrieve information from various online sources, including scholarly databases, which potentially allows the use of this tool for academic tasks, both quantitative and qualitative. To test its features, five academic tasks are designed: two quantitative (collecting hit count estimates from Google Search and scraping bibliometric indicators from ResearchGate); two qualitative tasks (performing a narrative synthesis of an academic topic and generating a brief academic author profile), and a mixed task (identifying, collecting and describing a list of publications from Google Scholar Profiles). The results show the inability of ChatGPT Search to conduct quantitative tasks correctly, fabricating the results (hallucination). Qualitative tasks are performed with better results; however, errors are detected, which prevent recommending the tool without manual analysis and refinement. Finally, the ability to generate links to scientific publications can open up competition among academic sites to be mentioned in the ChatGPT Search responses, giving rise to Academic Generative Engine Optimization (A-GEO)

Global Economic Recession and University Libraries’ Response to COVID-19 Pandemic in South-South, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study explored the global economic recession and university libraries’ response to the COVID-19 in South-south, Nigeria. The study was guided by four research objectives and one hypothesis using a correlational research design. The population of the study was 219 librarians in the university libraries of the 17 public universities in South-south, Nigeria. A total enumeration sampling technique was used for the study. A self-developed structured questionnaire was used as the instrument of data collection. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found that the level of global economic recession on library response to the COVID-19 pandemic was low; the level of coping with the COVID-19 global economic recessionary trends by the librarians was high; the university libraries operated during the COVID-19 pandemic period by reducing the library opening hours, performing reference services, cancellation of meetings, indefinite closure of the library, cancellation of training/conferences, and cancellation of local and international travels. There is a significant relationship between the global economic recession and university libraries’ response to COVID-19. The study concluded an improvement in the global economic as that may increase university libraries' response to COVID-19 among others. It was recommended among others that university management should, as a matter of urgency, make librarians to be more responsive during emergencies since the level of global economic recession to COVID-19 was low

Elementos de la etnografía para el estudio de los archivos personales: una aproximación metodológica
Get PDFThis article proposes a methodological route for the study of personal archives through four elements of the ethnographic method: archival contexts, the archive and interactions of individuals, documentary practices and the temporalities in the archive. In the first part, the impact of the archival turn and postmodern ideas on the archival studies and the way of approaching archives were analyzed, transcending from the idea of archive as a source to archive as a field of study, which allowed ethnographic readings of the archives. In the second part, a proposal to analyze personal archives from the ethnographic perspective were presented, from the four elements mentioned: context, individuals, documentary practices and temporalities. Finally, it is sketched out how archival ethnography allows to rethink archival principles and documentary organization processes
