Get PDFOpen access journals in Latin America and the Caribbean have succeeded in breakingthe traditional barriers of access to scientific and academic information. The openaccess movement has minimized the economic and geographic restrictions that otherformats of scientific publication have generated, such as journals that apply charges forthe processing of articles. The objective of the study was to identify the benefits forscientific research of publishing in open access journals to the detriment of those thatapply Article Processing Charges. To obtain results, methods at the theoretical andempirical levels were used, especially classic documentary analysis. The results identifythat open access journals in Latin America and the Caribbean have had a significantimpact in increasing the visibility and reputation of researchers and institutions in theregion. In contrast, journals that apply charges for article processing limit access toauthors to socialize their research papers. It was concluded that open access journalsshould be the bet for the socialization of knowledge in Latin America and theCaribbean. The open access movement and the scientific production generated underthis conception constitute a common good in which many researchers can contribute tothe development of the region
Los significados de la técnica en el ámbito bibliotecario argentino (1940-1960)
Get PDFThis article analyses the meanings attributed to technology between 1940 and 1960 by librarians. Based on a set of documents, the meanings of technique and technology are studied in relation to: a) the procedures for representing information and the power to coordinate work; b) equipment, machinery and the different documentary supports; c) the idea of effective and expected progress; d) the apprehensions and fears of the authors. The aim is to understand the meanings expressed under these four aspects, and to relate them to the culture of the era in which they emerged. Among other conclusions, it is observed that the librarians associated the technique with the possibilities of accessing a promising future for the profession

Get PDFBased on an investigation whose criterion was to analyze the cultural correspondence of the bibliographic collections located in libraries of primary schools of the Intercultural Bilingual Education (EIB) modality, in the northeastern region of Argentina (provinces of Chaco, Corrientes, Formosa and Misiones), It was evaluated to carry out a comparative study of the collections and services present in primary and secondary schools in the province of Chaco. Although there are elements to consider a potential usefulness of the collections by teachers and librarians (especially herbaria, maps and photographs), they have no impact on the uninhabited plane of school research. For this work, a consultation was made to the Official Registry of Educational Institutions, where the study population was taken as the people responsible for the libraries located in the secondary schools of Chaco, Common Education, Youth and Adults primary level, and Complementary Services modality. The data were extracted and analyzed, under a qualitative-quantitative methodological criterion, through surveys with open and closed questions. The research carried out allows us to understand how the cultural correspondence of bibliographic collections is losing impact in terms of oral documents, museum pieces and library extension services that are required to sustain the EIB modality from their libraries, a situation that follows the logic of decreasing percentage of institutions that offer this alternative to indigenous students who decide to continue in some of the different educational levels of secondary school

Get PDFDue to the increased use of technology in educational contexts, digital literacy has turned into an essential element for students to have a good performance. In postgraduate studies, they are expected to demonstrate these competences, especially in research. The following study aims to explore graduate students at the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana’s perception of their digital literacy abilities in the research context. Through a survey based on the Digital Competences for Citizens, the research sought to identify the levels of development of the digital literacy competences of graduate students. The results show that the participants declare to have a general knowledge of the field, especially highlighting the security dimension. Besides, it also reveals areas for improvement, such as the knowledge about copyright and digital identity protection. The findings demonstrate the necessity of implementing mechanisms and strategies for improving the digital literacy in graduate students of the institution

This challenge means assuming that libraries must be an inspiring environment for students, teachers and researchers to enhance their learning experiences. This paper presents the management model of the Library System of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina. It develops the changes introduced based on the results of the library’s evaluation and the methodologies applied to transform it into a user-centered management model. Sharing this experience aims to contribute to the reflection on librarians’ new roles and functions, the possible management models, and to raise awareness of the importance of the organisational cultural change that the library community must face
