In this study, we analyzed blood concentrations of 47 essential, toxic, and potentially toxic elements in 189 white storks from central Spain, assessing the influence of age, health status, and anthropogenic pressure on metal accumulation. Birds were grouped into chicks, fledglings, and adults. Statistical comparisons were performed using non-parametric tests and general linear models (GLMs), depending on data distribution. Our findings indicate that age significantly affects metal accumulation, with fledglings exhibiting higher concentrations of lead (Pb, p = 0.0024), arsenic (As, p = 0.0012), cadmium (Cd, p = 0.0476), and manganese (Mn, p = 0.0467) compared to adults, suggesting increased exposure through parental feeding and trophic transfer. Health status was also a critical determinant: sick individuals showed significantly elevated levels of Cd (p < 0.0001), Pb (p < 0.0001), and As (p = 0.0166), supporting the role of metal toxicity in avian morbidity. In terms of anthropogenic exposure, storks sampled within 30 km of landfills exhibited significantly higher concentrations of As (p = 0.0002), Cd (p = 0.0118), and Hg (p = 0.0412). Individuals with foreign materials in the digestive tract also showed increased Pb (p = 0.0007) and Cd (p = 0.0008) levels. Conversely, no significant differences were found between individuals from areas of high versus low human population density. These results highlight the impact of environmental pollution on metal bioaccumulation in white storks and demonstrate the influence of landfill proximity and trophic exposure on contaminant burdens. Given their role as a sentinel species, our findings underscore the need for stricter waste management policies and continued biomonitoring efforts to mitigate toxic metal exposure in wildlife.

If there is one characteristic of the Present time that makes it different from other epochs, it is the everydayness and ubiquity of digital technology. After the initial boom of the digital revolution, in the current epoch the rigid opposition between the digital and the analog no longer exists. My hypothesis is that in this continuum of the everyday digital and analog a decisive role is played by the relationship between the factual and the fictional. How much fiction and imagination are in the factual, but virtual, compositions in everyday reality? And what figures and strategies of representation serve to make that everyday postdigitality imaginable and accessible to us? Through examples of postdigital literature, that is, literature that engages with or is impacted by the representation of the postdigital, I make an attempt to explore these questions further.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (España)Depto. de Filología Alemana y Filología EslavaFac. de FilologíaInstituto Universitario de Lenguas Modernas y Traductores (IULMyT)Instituto del Teatro de Madrid (ITEM)TRUEpu

The 1884 Andalusian earthquake, Spain: re-evaluation of seismic intensities and source determination

    No full text
© 2025. The Authors. In this work, we present a quantified model of the seismic source for the 1884 Andalusian earthquake (Granada, Spain) that accounts for the dimensions and orientation of the rupture, average slip, focal depth, magnitude, and scalar seismic moment. We undertook archival research to find additional accounts, increasing the number of intensity data points from 157 to 213, which has allowed for a more detailed distribution of European Macroseismic Scale 1998 intensities. The re-evaluated intensity values were converted into peak ground acceleration (PGA) values using an empirical relation and then modeled using rectangular fault models with regular slip and different fault sizes, depths, and geometries. We have used two different approaches to carry out the comparison between synthetic and observed PGAs. The best results correspond to a normal fault with strikes of 270°–330° that steeply dips to the north, with the northern block moving down, and a shallow focus. This geometry agrees with that of the Ventas de Zafarraya fault system, which was proposed by different authors as the origin of the 1884 earthquake.European CommissionMinisterio de Ciencia e Investigación (España)Agencia Estatal de Investigación (España)Depto. de Física de la Tierra y AstrofísicaFac. de Ciencias FísicasTRUEpu
