Data from digitized heritage collections are a very useful source of information for research, especially in Digital Humanities. In this context, libraries must consider, on the one hand, how to share the data, where to publish them and under which licenses, and on the other hand, how to promote their enrichment so that they become really useful and reusable for research. Library labs, an innovative proposal for citizen participation introduced in Spain in recent years, can be a powerful tool for the development of projects with data and collections, with the aim of improving and enriching these data to make them more relevant. Citizen participation can be the way to achieve an aim: to obtain reusable and quality datasets to offer for research.BibliotecaFac. de FilologíaUCM. BibliotecaTRUEunpu
Complex modulation Diffractive Optical Elements implemented in a single Spatial Light Modulator
Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are optoelectronic devices that spatially modulate the properties of an incident electromagnetic field, such as its amplitude, phase, or polarization. They are used to generate dynamic Diffractive Optical Elements (DOEs), which are normally configured as pure-amplitude or pure-phase DOEs. In this work, we propose to generate complex modulation with a single SLM for optimizing the performance of DOEs. For that, we fill, as evenly as possible, the Argand plane, representing the complex amplitude of the DOE, with the modulation curve provided by the SLM and the polarization plates used. Also, we modify the Iterative Fourier Transform Algorithm to design complex DOEs and implement them in the SLM that works in an amplitude-phase configuration. For the simulations, we have considered that the modulation curves are spiral-shaped. We have verified that their far-field diffraction patterns present more uniformity, less background noise, and higher diffraction efficiencies than when pure-phase configuration is used. For the experimental verification, we have calibrated a LCoS SLM and optimized the azimuths of the polarizers and quarter-wave plates, placed before and after the SLM, to obtain the optimal modulation curve. The diffraction pattern generated by the studied complex DOEs presents a 32% increase in diffraction efficiency and a reduction of 85% in background noise compared to the phase DOE.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (España)Universidad Complutense de MadridDepto. de Optometría y VisiónFac. de Óptica y OptometríaTRUEpu
Eco-anxiety or simply eco-worry? Incremental validity study in a representative Spanish sample
The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research and/or publication of this article. The sample was recruited thanks to a grant from the Foundation La Caixa under the project titled Benefits of Practical Eco-Anxiety: Psychological Predictors of Pro-Environmental Behavior, reference number FS23-2B192.Scientific literature is keen to promote the study of eco-anxiety despite its current low prevalence and inconsistent relationships with pro-environmental behavior and mental health. In this paper, we analyze in a representative sample of the Spanish population (N = 1911) the incremental validity of the eco-worry construct concerning that of eco-anxiety at three levels of environmental commitment: high (environmental activists), medium (people who are not part of any environmental organization but who would like to), and low (people who neither belong to environmental groups nor want to). Our results showed that (1) the environmental activists in our sample did not seem to be eco-anxious but rather eco-worried, and (2) at the three levels of environmental commitment, eco-worry but not eco-anxiety positively mediated the relationship between climate change perception and general willingness for environmental behavior, and eco-worry, but not eco-anxiety, positively connected with life satisfaction through the general willingness to behave pro-environmentally. It is concluded that eco-anxiety does not add anything to the more intuitive and non-pathological concept of eco-worry, except for the alarm signal, which is not at all strategic when the goal is to promote individual pro-environmental behaviors and collective social actions.Fundación La CaixaDepto. de Psicología Social, del Trabajo y DiferencialFac. de PsicologíaTRUEpu
Influence of local factors on the expression of the early Aptian OAE 1a – insights from a pelagic basin in the Western Tethys
The early Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE 1a) was characterized by a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle, linked to the rapid input of 13C-depleted carbon into the Earth's system from volcanogenic and/or methanogenic sources. Although the related environmental and climatic changes are relatively well understood on a global scale, local and regional impacts are less well constrained. Here we provide new insights into the local expression of the biotic and environmental changes related to OAE 1a in pelagic domains, by analysing a pelagic succession from the Western Tethys, La Frontera section (S. Spain), using biomarkers, TOC content, and elemental composition data. These data revealed a complex variability before, during, and after OAE 1a (defined as isotope segments C2 to C7), but with a clear episode of biotic and environmental perturbation within OAE 1a at the upper C4 segment. Comparison with the nearby pelagic Carbonero section within the same basin reveals a heterogeneous expression of this event, recording three episodes of accelerated environmental change (including C4 segment) that correlate with C-isotope shifts. These episodes also correlate with cooling and warming periods based on sea-surface temperature data and can be linked to variable Ontong-Java Plateau activity, as indicated by osmium isotopes. Local palaeogeographic conditions likely controlled the heterogeneous expression of OAE 1a, with the Carbonero section situated in a more subsident and more restricted water circulation area. Our results highlight the importance of understanding the local and regional context when evaluating the global expression of OAE 1a in pelagic domains.Junta de AndalucíaMinisterio de Ciencia e InnovaciónDepto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu
Geophysical characterization and 3D modeling of an active landslide in Arteixo (La Coruña) using Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
Multicollinearity mitigation and unbiased estimations: an application of restricted least squares
This work presents an application of Restricted Least Squares (RLS) that achieves the mitigation of severe multicollinearity problems along with obtaining unbiased estimates. Both targets are restricted to the verification of the null hypothesis of the restrictions on the coefficients of the RLS model, which has been obtained with the application of two recent methodologies that mitigate multicollinearity problems: residualization and raise regression. The reliability of the proposed methodology is shown through Monte Carlo simulations, which illustrate that it is independent of the degree and type of multicollinearity. Finally, a particular empirical application is implemented, and it displays the possible combination of constraints depending on the case study. In conclusion, this application introduces a technique that can be used in all fields and particular studies where problematic relationships among explanatory variables emerge and the traditional methodologies to overcome the issue are biased techniques.Junta de AndalucíaDepto. de Economía Aplicada, Estructura e HistoriaFac. de Ciencias Económicas y EmpresarialesTRUEpu
