This work was supported by the Research Group UCM (910379) and FIS (PI15/01787) of the Health Institute Carlos III – Regional Developing Aid European Funds (ISCIII-FEDER), PID2022-136874OB-C31 and PID2022-136874OB-C32 (MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033), and CDTI (INDEKA IDI-20190077 and SyBARIOTA IDI-20210293).Background. Prematurely aged mice (PAM), characterized by an inadequate stress response, exhibit early immunosenescence and reduced lifespan compared with exceptional non-PAM (E-NPAM) of the same age. Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) has been proposed as a beneficial probiotic in healthy aging. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of LGG consumption over 2 and 4 weeks on behavioral parameters, peritoneal leukocyte function, and lifespan in adult female PAM. Results. Female ICR-CD1 mice were classified as either PAM or E-NPAM and divided into three groups: (1) PAM control (PAMC), (2) PAM receiving LGG (PAMLGG), and (3) E-NPAM control (E-NPAMC). The PAMLGG group consumed a lyophilized LGG suspension in skim milk for 4 weeks, while the PAMC and E-NPAMC groups received a skim milk solution. Behavioral tests were conducted after 2 weeks, and leukocyte function was analyzed after 2 and 4 weeks. The results showed that the PAMLGG group exhibited improved behavioral responses and enhanced immune functions, which was reflected in a lower biological age and in a longer longevity compared with the PAMC. Conclusion. LGG supplementation positively influenced behavior, immune function, and biological age markers in female PAM, leading to increased longevity. These findings indicate that LGG administration could be a good nutritional strategy for slowing down the aging process, allowing a healthy longevity to be achieved. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.Universidad Complutense de MadridInstituto de Salud Carlos III (España)European CommissionMinisterio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (España)Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (España)Depto. de Genética, Fisiología y MicrobiologíaFac. de Ciencias BiológicasTRUEpu

Ocupació, família i permisos parentals a Espanya: Una anàlisi longitudinal i interseccional

    No full text
How mothers reconcile work and family life varies significantly between individuals, as does their access to policies on maternity leave. This article takes a longitudinal and intersectional approach to analyse for the first-time the reconciliation of careers and family life in Spain. It uses retrospective data from the 2018 Fertility Survey to undertake a multichannel sequence analysis for mothers aged 18-55, according to level of education and country of birth. The results show that inequalities in the “motherhood penalty” are striking across different intersectional groups and are perpetuated to a lesser extent among younger cohorts. While pre-maternity career trajectory is key to maintaining a continuous pattern of work-life balance, there is a large group of mothers who enter employment after long breaks, when their children are older. Access to maternity leave is widespread, but access to reduced working hours is not. To this landscape, the public health crisis derived from COVID-19 and the intense debate surrounding vaccination on social media platforms add, generating a proliferation of pro and anti-vaccine messages, including the participation of influencers. Previous research has shown that this debate contributes to the spread of misinformation (Cuesta et al., 2021), making it crucial to analyze the activity of these influencers and their audience to understand discourse on social media in this realm of public health and counter fears and myths with more effective strategies to combat misinformation...Fac. de Ciencias de la InformaciónTRUEunpu

However, yeast strains do not grow alone during wine fermentation, rather they are embedded in diverse and evolving microbial communities exhibiting complex ecological dynamics. Understanding and predicting the interplay between the yeast community over the course of the species succession and the chemical matrix of wine can benefit from recognising that wine, like all microbial ecosystems, is subject to general ecological and evolutionary rules. In this piece, we outline how conceptual and methodological frameworks from community ecology and evolutionary biology can assist wine yeast researchers in improving wine fermentation processes by understanding the mechanisms governing population dynamics, predicting and engineering these important microcosms, and unlocking the genetic potential for wine strain development.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (España)Center for Computational, and Evolutionary and Human Genomics, University of Stanford (United States)Depto. de Genética, Fisiología y MicrobiologíaDepto. de Química AnalíticaFac. de Ciencias BiológicasFac. de Ciencias QuímicasTRUEpu

Understanding Interfacial Ice Premelting: Structure, Adhesion, and Nucleation

    No full text
The interface of ice with solids plays an exceptionally important role on a wide variety of natural phenomena, such as the melting of permafrost, sliding of glaciers or frost heaving, as well as on many important technological applications such as windmills, car tires, or aircrafts. In this work, we perform a systematic computer simulation study of ice premelting and explore the thickness and structure of quasi-liquid layers formed at the interface of ice with substrates of different hydrophilicities. Our study shows that interfacial premelting occurs systematically on neutral substrates of whatever hydrophilicity, forming films of limited thickness for substrates with contact angles larger than ca. 50° but exhibiting complete interfacial premelting at smaller contact angles. Contrary to most experimental studies, we focus not only on the premelting behavior with temperature, but also with pressure, which is a matter of relevance in important situations such as ice friction. Our study is cast within a rigorous framework of surface thermodynamics, which allows us to show that the premelting film structure is a function of a single thermodynamic variable. By this token we are able to relate properties measured along an isobar, with premelting films at arbitrary temperature and pressure. Our results are also exploited to study ice adhesion, with a view to the understanding of icephobicity. We find that adhesion strength in atomically smooth surfaces is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude larger than those found in experiments, and conjecture that the reason is substrate roughness and the presence of organic adsorbents. Our theoretical framework also allows us to exploit our results on interfacial premelting in order to gain insight into heterogeneous ice nucleation. Our results show that apolar smooth substrates of whatever hydrophilicity are unlikely nucleators, and that too large hydrophilicity conspires also against ice nucleation. Furthermore, we exploit our statistical-thermodynamic framework to shed light on the nature of the surface intermolecular forces promoting interfacial premelting, and provide a model to predict quasi-liquid layer thickness as a function of the substrate’s hydrophilicity with great potential applications in fields ranging from earth sciences to aircraft engineering.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MCIN)Polish National Agency for Academic ExchangeAcademic Supercomputer Center (CI TASK) in Gdansk.Depto. de Química FísicaFac. de Ciencias QuímicasTRUEpu

Association among clinical severity indicators, psychological health status and elastic properties of neck muscles in patients with chronic mechanical neck pain.

    No full text
Since objective stifness measures are not consistent with the patients' perception and its correlation with the clinical severity of neck pain is not clear, novel studies assessing the clinical relevance of muscle stiffness are needed. Objectives: To analyze the correlation among psychological factors, clinical severity indicators, and muscle stiffness in neck muscles in patients with chronic mechanical neck pain, and compare these factors with asymptomatic controls. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Participants included cases with chronic neck pain and asymptomatic controls, assessed for muscle stiffness using shear wave elastography, psychological health (anxiety and kinesiophobia), and clinical severity. Data analysis involved correlation matrices and comparison between groups. Results: Although no significant differences in levator scapulae stiffness were observed between groups (p > 0.05), patients exhibited significantly increased stiffness in the anterior scalene and cervical multifidus muscles (p = 0.009 and p = 0.040, respectively). STAI scores were significantly higher in patients for both subscales (STAI-S p = 0.002 and STAI-T p 0.05). Significant correlations between pain chronicity, intensity, disability, and psychological factors were confirmed. Notably, the levator scapulae stiffness was positively associated with disability, anxiety, and kinesiophobia (all p < 0.01). However, the anterior scalene and cervical multifidus stiffness, even if significantly associated with demographic factors (p < 0.05), were not associated with clinical or psychological outcomes. Conclusion: The findings underscore the intertwined nature of psychological factors and muscle stiffness in chronic neck pain, suggesting the need for integrated approaches in treatment that consider both physical and psychological dimensions.

    No full text
The task of reconstituting an archive, through the incorporation of those documents that have disappeared, but that have somehow come down to us, is a historiographically useful, archivally convenient, and culturally valuable task. The objective of this article is to reconstruct a royal privilege of Fernando II addressed to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Gradefes in 1172. We have news of the missing document through the Tumbo of the monastery and a transfer of it in a fourteenth-century romance issued by the episcopal chancellery of León. The diploma deals with the recognition of the town of Gradefes and the granting of a monastic reserve on its limits. The diplomatic analysis of the monastery's documentary collection, the privileges of the Fernandina chancery and the transfer preserved in the Royal Chancery of Valladolid allow us to propose the incorporation of a new document to the monastic archive of Gradefes, increasing its collection. Opera electa

    No full text
