Pancreatite acuta nel cane secondaria a terapia anticonvulsivante con Fenobarbital impiegato singolarmente o in associazione al Bromuro di potassio
RIASSUNTO In corso di terapia anticonvulsivante con Fenorbabital o con l’associazione Fenobarbital/Bromuro di potassio, è stata segnalata nel cane l’insorgenza di pancreatite acuta, ma solamente in alcuni studi è riportata la prevalenza. Scopo del presente lavoro è stato stabilire se fosse reale la relazione tra l’uso di farmaci anticonvulsivanti e patologie infiammatorie acute a carico del pancreas. Lo studio è stato condotto su 14 soggetti affetti da epilessia idiopatica e trattati con Fenobarbital da solo o in associazione a Bromuro di potassio. In tutti i soggetti è stato effettuato un esame obiettivo generale e particolare dell’apparato gastroenterico; inoltre è stato fatto un prelievo di sangue per la valutazione delle attività sieriche di alfa-amilasi e lipasi che aumentano anche in corso di pancreatiti acute. In caso di sintomi clinici riferibili a tale patologia ed in presenza di un aumento delle attività enzimatiche, sono stati eseguiti ulteriori accertamenti diagnostici (esame ecografico e test cPLI) che hanno confermato l’ipotesi diagnostica di coinvolgimento pancreatico. Nei cani epilettici trattati con solo Fenobarbital è stata accertata una prevalenza della pancreatite acuta del 14,3%, mentre nei cani trattati con l’associazione Fenobarbital/Bromuro di potassio abbiamo riscontrato una prevalenza della patologia del 43,8%. Alla luce dei risultati da noi ottenuti, possiamo affermare che sembra esistere un rischio di sviluppo di pancreatite acuta in soggetti sottoposti a terapia anticonvulsivante con Fenobarbital impiegato da solo o in associazione con Bromuro di potassio; inoltre sembra che il rischio sia maggiore per l’associazione Fenobarbital/Bromuro di potassio rispetto all’utilizzo del Fenobarbital da solo. SUMMARY Acute pancreatitis is reported in epileptic dogs treated with Phenobarbital or Phenobarbital/ Potassium bromide, even if the prevalence is not specified. The aim of this paper was to verify the relation between anti-convulsivant therapy and pancreatitis. Fourteen dogs with idiopathic epilepsy treated with Phenobarbital or with Phenobarbital/ Potassium bromide have been investigated. A complete clinical exam and a GI exam were performed; in all the subjects, serum activity of amylase and lipase was evaluated. In case of symptoms related to acute pancreatitis and/or pancreatic enzyme values increased, an ultrasound exam of the abdomen was performed and the cPLI were evaluated on blood samples, in order to verify the presumptive diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. The prevalence of acute pancreatitis in epileptic dogs treated with Phenobarbital alone was 14,3%, while the prevalence of this pathology in dogs treated with Phenobarbital/Potassium bromide was 42,8%. Our results seem to confirm what reported in literature concerning the relation between the anticonvulsivant therapy and acute pancreatitis. Furthermore, the prevalence of acute pancreatitis seems to be increased by the use of the association Phenobarbital/Potassium bromide

An update in monopole condensation in two-flavour Adjoint QCD
QCD with fermions in the adjoint representation (aQCD) is a model for which a
deconfinement and a chiral phase transition take place at different
temperatures. In this work, we present a study of the deconfinement transition
in the dual superconductor picture based on the evaluation of an operator which
carries magnetic charge. The expectation value of this operator signals
monopole condensation and is an order parameter for deconfinement as in the
case of fermions in the fundamental representation. We find a sharp first order
deconfinement transition. We also study the effects of the chiral transition on
the monopole order parameter and find them negligible
Dynamical control of matter-wave tunneling in periodic potentials
We report on measurements of dynamical suppression of inter-well tunneling of
a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a strongly driven optical lattice. The
strong driving is a sinusoidal shaking of the lattice corresponding to a
time-varying linear potential, and the tunneling is measured by letting the BEC
freely expand in the lattice. The measured tunneling rate is reduced and, for
certain values of the shaking parameter, completely suppressed. Our results are
in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, we have
verified that in general the strong shaking does not destroy the phase
coherence of the BEC, opening up the possibility of realizing quantum phase
transitions by using the shaking strength as the control parameter
Detecting and Preventing Type flaws: a Control Flow Analysis with tags
A type flaw attack on a security protocol is an attack
where an honest principal is cheated on interpreting a field in a
message as the one with a type other than the intended one. In
this paper, we shall present an extension of the LySa calculus with
tags attached to each field, indicating the intended types. We
developed a control flow analysis for analysing the extended LySa,
which over-approximates all the possible behaviour of a protocol
and hence is able to capture any type confusion that may happen
during the protocol execution. The control flow analysis has been
applied to a number of security protocols, either subject to type
flaw attacks or not. The results show that it is able to capture
type flaw attacks on those security protocols

QCD dynamics in a constant chromomagnetic field
We investigate the phase transition in full QCD with two flavors of staggered
fermions in presence of a constant abelian chromomagnetic field. We find that
the critical temperature depends on the strength of the chromomagnetic field
and that the deconfined phase extends to very low temperatures for strong
enough fields. As in the case of zero external field, a single transition is
detected, within statistical uncertainties, where both deconfinement and chiral
symmetry restoration take place. We also find that the chiral condensate
increases with the strength of the chromomagnetic field
Renormalised four-point coupling constant in the three-dimensional O(N)model with N=0
We simulate self-avoiding walks on a cubic lattice and determine the second
virial coefficient for walks of different lengths. This allows us to determine
the critical value of the renormalized four-point coupling constant in the
three-dimensional N-vector universality class for N=0. We obtain g* =
1.4005(5), where g is normalized so that the three-dimensional
field-theoretical beta-function behaves as \beta(g) = - g + g^2 for small g. As
a byproduct, we also obtain precise estimates of the interpenetration ratio
Psi*, Psi* = 0.24685(11), and of the exponent \nu, \nu = 0.5876(2)
Outer Approximation Algorithms for Canonical DC Problems
The paper discusses a general framework for outer approximation type algorithms for the canonical DC optimization problem. A thorough analysis of properties which guarantee convergence is carried out: different sets of general conditions are proposed and compared. They are exploited to build six different algorithms, which include the first cutting plane algorithm proposed by Tuy but also new ones. Approximate optimality conditions are introduced to guarantee the termination of the algorithms and the relationships with the global optimal value are discussed

We present behavioural skeletons for the CoreGrid Component Model, which are an abstraction aimed at simplifying the development of GCM-based self-management applications. As here we just want to introduce the behavioural skeleton framework, emphasis is placed on general skeleton structure rather than on their autonomic management policies
