Summary The input in the Italian fish market of a huge quantity of fish coming from other Mediterranean Countries and the consequent reduction in fish product prices, lead to the need to test new rearing systems so as to keep down production costs. Cost reduction of water supply seems to be one of the primary objectives to maintain the competitiveness of the national product in the market. Aim of the present study was to test the feasibility to use decantate wastewater in a 137-day interval of the growing period of sea breams (Sparus aurata). Six-month old sea breams, with a mean body weight of 240g, were distributed in two 208 m3 ponds filled with sea water and decantate wastewater, respectively. The effect on survival rate and productive parameters were evaluated by recording the number of dead fish and feed provided per pond. Entrance water samples and fish samples were collected every 45 days for chemical-bacteriological analysis and body weight assessment, respectively. During the whole experimental period, mortality of fish from both ponds was quite the same (less than 2%) and mean body weight of sea bream samples at each sampling date resulted statistically identical. Feed conversion efficiency was 2.1 for the decantate pond and 2.8 for the control pond. Productive performances of sea breams were quite satisfying, pointing out the adaptiveness of the species to a rearing system using decantate wastewater for a short-term of the growing period

SUMMARY Continuous positive airways pressure is a ventilation technique used when it is necessary to sustain a positive pressure during the entire respiratory cycle in spontaneous ventilation. This method is indicated to maintain airways patency especially in condition of alveoli collapse. The object of this study was to evaluate the tolerability of a non invasive continuous positive airway pressure with a mask device in lightly sedated dogs and to compare the oxygen inspired fraction between oxygen therapy with regular mask device and between continuous positive airway pressure ventilation with mask device. Five client-owned dogs, that arrived to the Clinic in order to attempt surgical or diagnostic techniques, were enrolled in the study. Dogs received oxygen with a regular mask device with an open system and with continuous positive airway pressure ventilation at 5 cm H2O pressure ventilation. During the procedures dogs were monitored recording heart rate, respiratory rate, mean arterial pressure and temperature. For the comparison of the patients oxygenation between the two methods had been used the evaluation of blood gas analysis recording partial pressure of arterial oxygen, of carbon oxide and pH. In all dogs was possible to apply the continuous positive airway pressure ventilation with mask device without evidence of agitation, panic or gastric distension due to gas ingestion. Recorded values of partial pressure of arterial oxygen and calculated values of oxygen inspired fraction were considerably higher with non invasive continuous positive airway pressure ventilation technique compared to classic oxygen therapy method

Relaxational dynamics in 3D randomly diluted Ising models

    No full text
We study the purely relaxational dynamics (model A) at criticality in three-dimensional disordered Ising systems whose static critical behaviour belongs to the randomly diluted Ising universality class. We consider the site-diluted and bond-diluted Ising models, and the +- J Ising model along the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition line. We perform Monte Carlo simulations at the critical point using the Metropolis algorithm and study the dynamic behaviour in equilibrium at various values of the disorder parameter. The results provide a robust evidence of the existence of a unique model-A dynamic universality class which describes the relaxational critical dynamics in all considered models. In particular, the analysis of the size-dependence of suitably defined autocorrelation times at the critical point provides the estimate z=2.35(2) for the universal dynamic critical exponent. We also study the off-equilibrium relaxational dynamics following a quench from T=\infty to T=T_c. In agreement with the field-theory scenario, the analysis of the off-equilibrium dynamic critical behavior gives an estimate of z that is perfectly consistent with the equilibrium estimate z=2.35(2)

    Planning and Verifying Service Composition

    No full text
A static approach is proposed to study secure composition of services. We extend the lambda-calculus with primitives for selecting and invoking services that respect given security requirements. Security-critical code is enclosed in policy framings with a possibly nested, local scope. Policy framings enforce safety and liveness properties. The actual run-time behaviour of services is over-approximated by a type and effect system. Types are standard, and effects include the actions with possible security concerns - as well as information about which services may be invoked at run-time. An approximation is model-checked to verify policy framings within their scopes. This allows for removing any run-time execution monitor, and for determining the plans driving the selection of those services that match the security requirements on demand

Outer Approximation Algorithms for Canonical Reverse-Polar Problems

    No full text
In this paper we propose a novel generalization of the canonical DC problem and we study the convergence of outer approximation (cutting planes) algorithms for its solution which use an “approximated” oracle for checking the global optimality conditions to the problem. Although the approximated optimality conditions are similar to those of the canonical DC problem, the new class of Canonical Reverse Polar (CRP) problems is shown to significantly differ from its special case. We also show that outer approximation approaches for DC problems need be substantially modified in order to cope with (CRP); interestingly, some outer approximation approaches for the latter cannot be applied to the formers, thus the more general problem allows for novel algorithms. We develop a hierarchy of conditions that guarantee the convergence of cutting plane algorithms;relying on these conditions, we build four cutting plane algorithms for solving (CRP), which seem to be new and cannot be reduced to each other

Orc + metadata supporting grid programming

    No full text
Following earlier work demonstrating the utility of Orc as a means of specifying and reasoning about grid applications we propose the enhancement of such specifications with metadata that provide a means to extend an Orc specification with implementation oriented information. We argue that such specifications provide a useful refinement step in allowing reasoning about implementation related issues ahead of actual implementation or even prototyping. As examples, we demonstrate how such extended specifications can be used for investigating security related issues and for evaluating the cost of handling grid resource faults. The approach emphasises a semi-formal style of reasoning that makes maximum use of programmer domain knowledge and experience

Haplotype reconstruction from unphased genotype data at the bovine PRKAG3 gene

    No full text
SUMMARY Haplotype analysis has became an area of intense research, both for population genetics studies and for molecular dissection of complex phenotypes. Haplotypes provide increased informativeness with respect to single nucleotide polymorphisms and allow to condense information on genomic variation, with a sensible gain of power in association studies. Direct haplotyping via molecular analysis provides more exact information per individual, but is much more expensive and labour-intensive than indirectly inferring haplotypes from genotypes. Several methods have been proposed so far to indirectly reconstruct haplotypes from unphased genotypes. In the present study, we adopted four different approaches (implemented in the computer programs ARLEQUIN, HELIXTREE, HAP and PHASE) to infer phase information from genotypic data on 197 subjects at 14 polymorphic sites of the bovine PRKAG3 gene. In the whole, twelve different haplotypes had been inferred by all the four different methods, although at slightly varying frequencies. Other three haplotypes were inferred by at least two different approaches and some haplotypes were unique to a single method. No dramatic differences among the four selected approaches were observed for the considered genomic target. This is probably due to the linkage-disequilibrium structure of the analysed region and to the moderate amount of missing genotype data.

SUMMARY problem seen in veterinary practice. Cruciate ligament disease results in partial or complete rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament of the stifle and is a common cause of lameness in dogs. The resulting stifle instability is managed surgically in most dogs. Numerous surgical techniques have been developed for stabilization and reconstruction of the Cranial Cruciate Ligament-deficient stifle joint. The instability has traditionally been addressed by physically preventing the abnormal cranial-caudal movement, either by placement of an intra-articular graft or an extra-capsular, fabello-tibial suture prosthesis. Purpose of our study is to evaluate the efficiency of an innovative mini-invasive extra-capsular technique for the stifle joint treatment of Cranial Cruciate Ligament rupture. The 6 dogs, examined at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences of the University of Pisa, in the period November 2005-November 2006, differed for breed, age and weight. A complete clinical and radiological examination was preoperatively performed. The dogs with mono-lateral rupture of Cranial Cruciate Ligament underwent surgery with a mini-invasive techinique with a new sutur anchor system. The short–term follow-up showed the restoration of a good motor function in five dogs. A more long-term results was available only in 4 dogs. The advantages of this techniques resides in its simplicity; the surgical procedure is mini.invasive and rapids and shows a notable shortening of the necessary period to the total functional recovery
