How is humanity explored as a concept in Cormac McCarthy's The Road?
Get PDFIn Cormac McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic novel The Road, the two protagonists a father and his son, struggle to maintain their humanity, as they travel through a burned and demolished land which is now only accommodated by the few survivors left that are twisted and broken enough to kill, rape and even canabalize those they come across. In this study the researcher tries to answer the question “How is humanity explored as a concept in Cormac McCarthy's The Road?” and explore whether the characters the Man and the Boy are able to preserve the bits of humanity left in them when thrown into dire situations like starvation, robbery and in the way of cannibalistic cults, studying several themes such as death, good and bad, isolation spirituality, parental relationships that the researcher took inspiration from online sources when deciding on which to analyse. Through all these themes and perspectives, it is analysed how McCarthy explores the way the humanity in humans is affected when said humans are in a destroyed and barbarous environment. At the end of the study it is concluded that even though the majority is far gone and stripped from their humane emotions, some humanity might still be found even in the direst conditions
What is the role of women in James Joyce’s Dubliners and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio?
Get PDFThis extended essay is an investigation of the protagonist female characters in both James Joyce’s Dubliners and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio. The research question revolves around unwed young women and married women in their motherhood in terms of man-woman relationships, sociocultural views and religious concepts. In addition to the context, the purpose and explanation of the literary devices is included in the relevant sections of the essay. The arguments are fully supported by quotations from the two literary works and refuted with proper historical knowledge in appropriate places. Mainly only the characters in the chosen short stories are analyzed and explored, however for some of the stories, additional characters are taken into consideration. The purpose of this work is to investigate how women are portrayed in two diverse cultures with the aforementioned circumstances.
The extended essay is composed of an introduction, main body and conclusion. In the main body, James Joyce’s Dubliners and Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio is evaluated and analyzed. The two literary works are compared within their own historical and cultural context. While analyzing the short stories, a pattern of the development and growth of a woman is displayed by initially capturing a young teenage girl’s story to focusing on a married mother. Furthermore, in the comparison paragraph, the scope of the two authors and how much they depart from historical context is taken into account.
In the conclusion of the essay, the roles of women in both Irish and American cultures are reflected upon and the authors’ own interpretations, thoughts and attitudes towards women are successfully revealed with their unique writing styles

Bu tezin amacı, yapıtta temel değişken olarak ele alınan ölüm temasının, kişinin kendi ölümü, yakınının ölümü, intiharı ve birini öldürme ya da öldürtme hakkındaki düşünce, tutum ve davranışlarının figürlerin yaşadıkları olaylarla ve içinde bulundukları toplum yapısını da göz önünde bulundurarak diğerlerinden nasıl farklılıklar gösterdiğini incelemektir. Üç gelişme bölümünden oluşan tezin giriş bölümünde ölüme karşı olan bakış açısının figürlerin içinde bulundukları toplum ve sınıf farkının da etkisiyle kişiden kişiye farklılık gösterdiği belirtilmiştir. Birinci bölümünde figürlerin genel olarak ölüm hakkındaki görüşleri ve yakınlarının ölümleri hakkındaki düşünceleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu görüş İlhan, Armağan, Renginur, Gülcan ve Âdem figürleri üzerinden incelenmiştir. İkinci bölümde figürlerin öldürme, öldürtme ve cinayet hakkındaki görüşleri dikkate alınmıştır. Bu görüş Fikran, Ramazan ve Revan figürleri üzerinden okuyucuya aktarılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde ise figürlerin kendi ölümleri ve intihar hakkındaki düşünceleri incelenmiştir. Get PDFUluslararası Bakalorya bitirme tezi olarak A dersi kapsamında hazırlanan bu çalışmada amaç, Ayfer Tunç’un Mağara Arkadaşları adlı yapıtındaki öykülerde yalnızlık temasının ve yalnızlıktan sıyrılma yollarının nasıl işlendiğini incelemektir. Yazınsal yapıtlarda sıklıkla ele alınan yalnızlık konusunun bu yapıtta yaşamın olağan bir parçası olarak ele alınması ve yalnızlığın nedenlerinden daha çok kişide yarattığı duygu durumuna yer verilmesi yapıt ve araştırma sorusu seçiminde etkili olmuştur.
Tezin giriş bölümünde araştırma sorusuna yer verilmiş, yapıttaki öykülerde yer alan odak figürlerin yaşadığı yalnızlık ve bu durumla başa çıkma yolları genel hatlarıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde ise öykü figürlerinin yalnızlığı, içinde bulunduğu koşullar ve duygu durumu bağlamında incelenmiştir. Tezin üçüncü bölümünde ise öykü figürlerinin yaşamına hakim olan bu yalnızlık durumundan sıyrılma çabaları üzerinde durulmuş, başka yaşamlara duyulan merakın ve arkadaşlığın sıyrılma yollarını oluşturduğu görülmüştür. Çalışmanın sonuç bölümünde ise değerlendirme sonucunda edinilen çıkarımlar doğrultusunda araştırma sorusu yanıtlanmıştır. Farklı kurgulara sahip olsa da yapıttaki her öykünün aynı ileti çevresinde birleştiği görülmüştür. Bireyin içinde bulunduğu yalnızlığın her zaman belli bir olaya bağlı olarak çıkmayan, mutsuz etse dahi kabullenilen bir duygu olarak yapıtta yer aldığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır

Kadının var olma çabasını konu alan bu tezin birinci bölümünde kadın erkek ilişkileri üzerinde durulurken ikinci bölümde de Aysel’in toplumda var olma çabası ve mutluluk arayışı ele alınmıştır. Son olarak üçüncü bölümde ise odak figürünün var olma arayışı sonucunda yabancılaşması ve tükenişinin belirtisi olan ölüm isteği incelenmiştir. How does the increase in expansion/compression ratio of an internal combustion engine change its efficiency when compression ratio is kept constant?
Get PDFThe main purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effect of expansion/compression
ratio on efficiency of an internal combustion engine. Efficiency of internal combustion
engines are affected by compression ratio, expansion/ compression ratio, internal friction and
many other factors. Compression ratio is the factor affecting on the fuel combustion process
mainly affects the combustion pressure, as compression ratio increases, fuel solubility
therefore released energy increases. Expansion is the process of converting pressure produced
by heat, into kinetic energy. With enough expansion ratio pressure inside the combustion
chamber can equalized to the pressure outside pressure. With optimization of these two ratios,
useful energy produced from unit amount of fuel can be increased. To conserve fuel burning
efficiency and increasing expansion ratio, first I determined what expansion/compression ratio
to test and then calculated the volume need to be reduced in the combustion chamber to fix
compression ratio at eight and increase expansion ratio. To reduce volume, metal pieces were
bolted on the cylinder head, graduated cylinder was mounted on the fuel tank. To make results
closer to real life usage, 2 kilos of cylindrical mass was bolted on the crankshaft. In each test
same amount of fuel was used, RPM was kept constant in each run, times were recorded for
each setup. Each configuration of expansion/compression ratio is tested for four times. Four
different time data for each expansion/compression ratio configuration summed and divided
by four to get average time. To calculate average percentage efficiency gain, average time of
running for each expansion/compression ratio configuration was divided by the average time
of configuration with expansion/compression ratio of 1 and 1 was subtracted and divided by
100. Graphs show that efficiency increases as expansion/compression ratio increases
Death in Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne
Get PDFThis extended essay examines how death is treated in selected short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The essay explores the research question in terms of literary devices, symbols, tone and mood used when portraying death and the contextual or thematic results of these portrayals. The arguments and claims in the extended essay are supported with quotes from the literary pieces or supported with evidence from the short stories.
The essay investigates the reasearch question in two main aspects, namely the portrayal of death and the function of death within the context of the short stories. When discussing the portrayal of death, the literary devices used, the tone and mood created, the characterization and the foreshadowing used by the authors are determined and their relative effect on the portrayal of death are conferred. When determining the function of death, the themes related to or a result of death are explored and if any, the authors’ personal intentions are identified.
In the conclusion, it is determined that with respect to the portrayal of death, Poe mainly uses the unity of effect, associating all aspects of his stories to central themes by affixing symbolic values to them, while Hawthorne displays subjective narration, symbolic elements and motifs. In comparison, Poe’s portrayal of death is more artistic when compared to Hawthorne’s realistic portrayal of death. With respect to the function of death, Poe uses death to explore the philosophical order of life and psychological state of the individual, whereas Hawthorne uses death to comment on social norms, myths, human nature and religion

It is beneficiary both for our immune system and the metabolism, preventing us from many serious illnesses such as cancer or Alzheimer's disease. Since it is a common household product, choosing the most healthy oil is crucial to our health. Not every product is fresh and 100% pure. In this essay, investigation was carried out to analyze the effect of time on the acidity of the olive oil through the research question: How could we establish press time as a measuring agent to determine the quality of olive oil by titrating oleic acid in olive oil with KOH prepared in alcohol solution?
Oleic acid has many health benefits including reduction of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, Alzheimer's and many more. Because of the generous amount of fatty acids it contains, it can also be substituted for butter. However, although its is difficult, high heat can break the chains of the long hydrogen chains making it less beneficial to our health.
In the experiment two samples were left open, exposed to air and two were used straight out of the bottle with no wait. One of the main reasons why I used two different time periods is because there is a significant difference between the amounts of oleic acid due to oxidation. To determine the acidity of the samples, titration method was used and the values were monitored.
It is found that the samples that were exposed, tend to have a lower acidity than those ones which were straight out of the bottle. Therefore, making them less beneficial to our health. Similar to lower quality oils, exposed samples lacked the necessary antioxidants to qualify as a higher quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Regarding this information, I’ve concluded that it is best for olive oil to be stored in cool spaces with the lid closed for maximum use health benefits
