Prognosis in children with traumatic injuries referring to the emergency department
Purpose
Trauma may lead to serious complications in children patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate prognosis in children with traumatic injuries.
Methods
This cross-sectional study was conducted on all of the children (<18 years old) who had suffered traumatic injuries and transferred to the emergency department of Imam Hussein Hospital by emergency medical services. After selecting the children, a checklist including information such as demographic characteristics, trauma type, consciousness level, and final outcome was recorded. Finally, the data were analyzed using t-test, Chi-square test and ANOVA.
Results
In total of 564 children were investigated. Among them, 70% were males, and 33.2% were in the age range of 5–12 years. The mechanism of injuries in 97.9% of the cases was blunt trauma. The most common chief complaint among the affected children was nausea. The majority of them had stable vital signs and normal neurological tests results. However, 1.06% of them died during hospitalization. The results indicated that the final outcome in the children affected by traumatic injuries is significantly related to the type of trauma, the location of traumatic event, the vehicle used to transport them to emergency departments and their Glasgow coma scale score (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
Considering the young age of the child patients and over half of trauma happened at home, it is important to raise parents' awareness about the risky places and activities, which were likely to result in traumatic injuries for childre
Novel N,N-dimethylbarbituric-pyridinium derivatives as potent urease inhibitors: Synthesis, in vitro, and in silico studies
A new series of N,N-dimethylbarbituric-pyridinium derivatives 7a-n was synthesized and evaluated as
Helicobacter pylori urease inhibitors. All the synthesized compounds (IC50 = 10.37 ± 1.0–77.52 ± 2.7 μM)
were more potent than standard inhibitor hydroxyurea against urease (IC50 = 100.00 ± 0.2 μM). Furthermore,
comparison of IC50 values of the synthesized compounds with the second standard inhibitor thiourea
(IC50 = 22.0 ± 0.03 µM) revealed that compounds 7a-b and 7f-h were more potent than thiourea. Molecular
modeling study of the most potent compounds 7a, 7b, 7f, and 7g was also conducted. Additionally, the druglikeness properties of the synthesized compounds, based on Lipinski rule and other filters, were evaluated
The Assessment of the Pattern of Impacted Mandibular Third Molars in Ardabil City Population
Background & objectives: Third molar impaction (wisdom tooth) is a widespread phenomenon. It is indeed very important to study the impacted teeth pattern in the communitysince it will help to develop an appropriate treatment plan for individuals of the community.
The aim of this study was to investigate the impaction pattern of mandibular third molar in Ardabil population.
Methods: In this study, the panoramic radiography of 382 patients referred to the Ardabil Dental Clinic, ranging 18-40 years old that had a couple of third molar teeth were
investigated. The radiographs were investigated to collect data corresponding to depth-ofimpaction,the distance between the canal and inferior alveolar, number of roots, shape and
connection between the roots as well as the damages to neighboring structure. The collected data were coded to be analyzed through Chi-square and t- test in SPSS software.
Results: Among the cases, 42.4% and 57.6% of the subjects were male and female respectively. There is no significant difference between men and women for number of roots
and the connection between them, whereas noticeable differences between men and women were observed for depth of impaction, distance from Inferior alveolar canal, the shape of the roots and damage to neighboring structures.
Conclusion: The results suggest that most of the cases had vertical angulation, regarding depth of impaction, most of the teeth were categorized in Class-B, regarding distance from Inferior alveolar, and most of the cases were in the vicinity of the canal and had two separate canals. Regarding damage to neighboring structures, most of the cases were categorized as a radiographic bone loss

Design, synthesis and evaluation of antileishmanial effects of novel six-membered heterocyclic nitrogen compounds
Introduction
Leishmaniasis is one of the common diseases between humans and animals. Use of drugs that is used to treat leishmaniasis have limitations such as prolonged treatment, expensive medications, drug resistance and severe toxicity to the heart, liver, and kidneys. Therefore, drug development is essential in the treatment of disease. In this study, towards drug development of the treatment of leishmaniasis, new tetrahydropyrimidine and dihydropyridine derivatives were designed and synthesized through the Bijingle and Hansh procedures, respectively and their the anti amastigote and promastigote effects of major Leishmania parasites were investigated.
Materials and methods
Afther design, the derivatives were synthesized and purified. Then, their structurally confirmed using spectroscopic methods of FT-IR, 1H-NMR and MS, as well as determination of melting point as a physical constant. Their antiparasitic effects were investigated on standard strain (MRHO/IR/75/ER) of major Leishmania.
Results
In general, the highest efficacy among the tetrahydropyrimidine compounds on the amastigote and promastigote forms were compounds 8 and 4 with EC50 = 16.80 and EC50 = 12.9 μg/mL, respectively, and among the dihydropyridine compounds of compound 11 with EC50 = 16.10 and EC50 = 10 μg/mL were observed. Also, the toxicity results of these compounds were studied on macrophages and the results showed that almost of compounds did not show any toxicity or showed slight toxicity.
Discussion and conclusion
Based on the results, position of chlorine atom on aromatic ring, the lipophilicity of the compounds, the chain length of ester on ring and the presence of oxygen or sulfur atom on the ring are effective on the activity. The efficacy of all the compounds was lower than standard drugs, but it was more than the monastrol. Also, dihydropyridine deriviatives showed stronger anti-leishmanial effects with less toxicity compared to tetrahydropyrimidine compounds

Background & objectives: Gastric cancer has a very wide geographic distribution. Identification of the genetic factors involved in the cancer predisposition is very important.
IL-1β as a pro inflammatory cytokine is involved in gastric acid secretion in the H. pylori
infected individuals. This study was aimed to evaluate the role of IL-1β-511 polymorphism on
the susceptibility to gastric cancer in residents of Ardabil province.
Methods:One-hundred patients affected with gastric cancer and 100 normal individuals were
selected as case and control groups, respectively. After DNA extraction from peripheral blood
samples, the presence of the polymorphism IL-1β-511 was determined via PCR-RFLP assay. The results were evaluated by agarose gel electrophoresis.
Results: Among cases, CC, CT, and TT genotypes were observed in 19%, 60%, and 21% of
individuals, respectively. Also, the distribution of genotypes among the participated
individuals in control group was 4%, 67%, and 29%, respectively. There was a significant
difference (p<0.05) between case and control groups.
Conclusion: According to this study, there was a significant relationship between IL-1β 511C
allele polymorphism and gastric cancer in patients with gastric cancer in Ardabil province. It
is indicated that some of the polymorphisms in IL-1β cytokine are associated with gastric
cancer, and this finding would be used as a predictive valu
New series of water-soluble thiosemicarbazones and their copper (II) complexes as potentially promising anticancer compounds
New water soluble thiosemicarbazone ligands, namely 3-(3-{[(aminocarbonothioyl) hydrazono]methyl}-4-
hydroxybenzyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride (H2L1Cl), 3-[4-hydroxy-3-({[(methylamino)
carbonothioyl]hydrazono}methyl)benzyl]-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride (H2L2Cl) and 3-(3-
{[(anilinocarbonothioyl)hydrazono]methyl}-4-hydroxybenzyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride (H2L3Cl)
were synthesized through 1:1 condensation reaction of thiosemicarbazide derivatives with 3-(3-formyl-4-
hydroxybenzyl)-1-methyl-1H-imidazole-3-ium chloride (SalimiCl) and characterized by elemental analysis and
spectroscopic methods (UV–Vis, 1
H NMR, FTIR). Single crystals of H2L1Cl and H2L2Cl were prepared for crystallographic analysis, which showed similar X-ray structures for both ligands with chiral P212121 space group. The
ligands were used for synthesis of the following copper(II) complexes: [Cu(HL1)Cl]Cl, [Cu(HL2)Cl]Cl·H2O, and
[Cu(HL3)Cl]Cl. All complexes were characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. The X-ray
structure of [Cu(HL1)Cl]Cl was orthorhombic with Pcba space group while [Cu(HL2)Cl]Cl·H2O was triclinic
with Pī space group. Both complexes were mononuclear, with tridentate ligands in a thione form. All of the studied compounds showed good solubility and stability in water. The measurement of the molar conductance
showed the release of Cl− into solution and substitution of water instead of the coordinated chloride. Among
the studied complexes, only [Cu(HL3)Cl]Cl shows a quasi-reversible redox behavior with its reduction and oxidation peak potentials separated by a value of about 0.120 V (Epc = −0.310 V and Epa = −0.190 V) indicating onestep and one-electron transfer for CuII/CuI
redox couple. The cytotoxic effect of the compounds was measured
using the MTT assay on MCF-7 and K562 cell lines and the results showed that [Cu(HL3)Cl]Cl and H2L3Cl had
lower IC50 values compared to the other compounds. Flow cytometry analysis on the MCF-7 cells showed the apoptosis cell death after treating with the H2L3Cl and [Cu(HL3)Cl]Cl. Also studies of cell cycles confirmed the cell
cycle arrest in G2 phase for H2L3Cl and [Cu(HL3)Cl]Cl
The protective effects of Ocimum basilicum extract against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in male rats; an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic action
Introduction: Some studies are in favor of protective and anti-inflammatory effects of Ocimum basilicum (OB) against renal failure.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the protective effects of OB extract against gentamicin (GM)-induced nephrotoxicity in male rat models of acute kidney injury.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven adult male Wistar rats with the weight of 200-250 g were prepared under standard condition (12 h light/dark cycle, 20 to 22°C temperature). In the gentamicin group (GM), the rats were administrated normal saline (5 mL/kg; oral) for four consecutive weeks and then GM (80 mg/kg/d; intraperitoneal) for another one week. In the third (OB-200+ GM) and fourth (OB-800+ GM) groups, the rats were initially treated with OB extract (200 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg respectively; oral) for four consecutive weeks followed by intraperitoneal administration of 80 mg/kg/d GM for another one week. The control group was treated with normal saline (5 mL/kg; oral) for five consecutive weeks. They were sacrificed under deep anesthesia, then plasma and tissue samples were obtained.
Results: Treatment with OB hydro-alcoholic extract decreased BUN, serum Cr, FeNa and the levels of TNF-a and NF-kB and also diminished the rate of apoptosis in renal tubular cells compared to gentamicin group.
Conclusion: Our findings provide comprehensive evidence supporting the beneficial role of OB, a traditional medicinal herb, as a potential therapeutic supplement to prevent the incidence and progression of renal impairment in GM-induced renal toxicity
