    Periodontal Status, Its Treatment Needs, and Its Relationship with Airflow Limitation and Quality of Life in COPD Patients

    Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most prevalent respiratory diseases in the world. There is an impressive relationship between periodontal status and airflow limitation in patients with COPD. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the periodontal status, its treatment needs, and its relationship with the severity of airway obstruction and quality of life in patients with COPD. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 36 healthy men (control group) and 35 men afflicted with COPD (case group) were investigated. On the basis of spirometry results and Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria, patients with COPD were further divided into 4 groups. The participants’ quality of life was evaluated using COPD Assessment Test (CAT) questionnaire. Thereafter, both groups of participants were referred to a dentistry clinic so that the related specialist could investigate their periodontal health status. The relationship between the periodontal indices and the variables under study including GOLD stage, CAT score, Forced Expiratory Volume in first second and Forced Vital Capacity (FEV1/FVC) ratio, Forced Expiratory Volume in first second (FEV1), and the exacerbation rate were statistically analyzed using independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Tukey’s test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The results revealed that probing pocket depth (PDD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and loss of attachment (LOA) are negatively correlated with FEV1% (r=-0.53, p=0.001), (r=-0.62, p=0.001), and (r=- 0.72, p=0.001) as well as FEV1/FVC ratio (r=-0.45, p=0.007), (r=-0.47, p=0.004), and (r=-0.61, p=0.001), respectively. The results showed that PDD, BOP, and LOA are positively correlated with CAT score (r=0.51, p=0.002), (r=0.47, p=0.004), and (r=0.71, p=0.001), respectively. Conclusion: Periodontal problems are positively associated with COPD severity as determined by GOLD criteria and negatively associated with quality of life of patients with COPD.     In vitro comparison of apical extrusion of debris during root canal preparation by using new rotary system with two reciprocal techniques and one manual technique

    Introduction: One of the problems in both rotary and manual instrumentations is foramen apical debris extrusion which occurs during the canal preparation. The difference between root canal preparation systems design and the related applications may bring fluctuations in the amount of apical debris extrusion. In the present survey, the amount of debris extruded from the apex is measured in laboratory conditions through the reciproc, reciproc blue system and step-back technique and the results are compared with the tornado equipment. Material and methods: In the current in vitro experimental study, 80 human mandibular premolars with complete apex and less than 10º curvatures, are selected. These teeth are randomly divided into 4 groups of 20. Teeth are standardized with respect to working length and put into the vials which are weighed utilizing weighing machine with a 0.00001 accuracy. Root canals are cleaned up and reshaped using single file rotating reciproc, reciproc blue and tornado equipment and manual step-back method similarly, all operations are in line with the manufacturer's guidance. Collected vials containing debris are weighed again with the same weighing machine right after drying in incubator. Instrumentation time is also measured in second for each systems. Ultimately, one-way analysis of variance and Games-Howell nonparametric post hoc approach in 23rd version of SPSS software is utilized for data analysis. The acceptable error margin in the current survey is 0.05. Results: The recorded results reveal that the lowest amount of apical debris extrusion for the treated root canal mandibular premolars are (0.9195±0.621 mg) in reciproc rotary system, (1.389±0.730 mg) in reciproc-blue rotary system, (2.383±1.87 mg) in tornado equipment and (2.677±2.188 mg) in manual method. The pairwise group comparisons exhibit a significant difference in apical debris extrusions of the treated root canal mandibular premolars for rotating tornado system with the reciproc method and among manual technique and reciproc system (P<0.05). Furthermore, the shortest canal preparation time for mandibular premolar are estimated at (72.20±16.23 s) in rotary reciproc system, (82.40±24.63 s) in rotary reciproc-blue system, (172.65±37.70 s) in tornado equipment and (239.90±50.719 s) in manual method. The evaluation of canal preparation time for mandibular premolar among pairwise group exhibit a significant variation (P<0.05), however, there is no remarkable difference between rotary reciproc and reciproc-blue systems (P=0.423). Conclusion: All files are lead in apical debris extrusion, however, the highest and lowest amount of debris are recorded for manual method and reciproc systems, respectively. Consequently, compared with the rotary systems, applying manual method is resulted in the more debris extrusion. Tornado system has no advantages in terms of preparation time and debris extrusion over the utilized rotary system in this study

    Comparative Evaluation of color stability of the bulk fill and conventional composite resins in response to common drinking in children

    Objectives: Composite resins have been widely used as a popular restorative materials nowadays. Color change in dental composites after the consumption of colored drink is among the problems commonly encountered in restorative dentistry. The aim of this study were investigated the effects of liquid drink on the discoloration of bulk-fill resin composites. Materials and Methods: Twelve disk shaped specimens (6 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick) were fabricated from each composite resin. (Tetric Evo Ceram bulk-fill, Filtek Bulk Fill, Filtek Z550). The specimens of each restorative material were randomly divided into four groups according to the storage media distilled water, chocolate milk, orange juice and cola. The colors of all specimens before and after immersed in staining solutions for 120 hours were measured by a colorimeter based on CIE Lab system. For statistical analyses, the color differences were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Sidak post hoc test (P< 0.05). Result: All the materials tested revealed unacceptable clinically staining after exposure to four tested children’s drinks (ΔE>3.3). Flowable bulk-fill composite showed higher color change value compared with two composite resin. (P0.05). Conclusion: Color change values of resin composite materials is related to structure of the composite materials, and type of staining agent. color change of composite resins with low filler content was higher than of composite resins with higher filler content.filtek bulkfill composite had the highest ΔE changes

    Treatment of cartilage defects by Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound in a sheep model

    Aim of this study was to evaluate effects of Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on repair of articular cartilage defects. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (Lipus) can induce the differentiation and activation of chondrocytes. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Lipus on articular cartilage defects in a sheep. Eight sheep were divided in to two groups. The animals received bilateraly, articular cartilage defects 4 mm in diameter and 2 mm in deep on the patellar groove and experimental groups were treated with intensity 200 mW/cm², 20 min/day with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for 2 month. Then both knee joints underwent surgery for remove of formed tissue sample from defects.The samples were evaluated by Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), Safranin-o staining, Immunofluorescence Staining and Morphological characterization. The best and worst sample per group according to Macroscopic and micriscopic scoring were icentified. The results showed that the operated groups with-Lipus-treatment and without-Lipus treatment had considered statistically significant. Gross photography revealed that the defects in experimental groups were filled with proliferative tissue, while in control groups, a thin layer of proliferative tissue was formed in defects. qRT-PCR results showed the expression of coll2, sox9, aggrecan and Osteocalcin in experimental groups. Intense safranin-O staining show the formation cartilage tissue in ultrasound treated group, while loose safranin-o-staining were observed at the control groups. Immunofluorescence staining showed the type 2 Collagen protein expression. We suggest that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound provide the mechanistic basis force for articular cartilage repair and effective treatment modality for improving of articular cartilage defects

    The Relationship between Brain Natriuretic Peptide Serum Levels with Epicardial Fat Thickness in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Comparison with Patients with Stable Angina

    Background: Adipose tissue has been shown to have different functions by releasing a variety of mediators called adipokines. Recent evidence suggests that Epicardial Fat Thickness (EFT) is associated with cardiovascular disease. Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between serum levels of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and EFT in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods and material: In a cross-sectional study, three groups were selected from 90 patients who were candidate for angiography, including 30 individuals as a control group with normal angiography but a history of chest pain, 30 patients with a diagnosis of stable angina pectoris (stable-AP), and 30 patients with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (acute-MI). Demographic, biochemical, angiographic, and echocardiographic parameters were evaluated in all subjects. Results: The results showed that serum BNP levels were higher in the groups with acute myocardial infarction and stable angina compared to the control group. Serum BNP levels were also significantly increased in the group with acute myocardial infarction compared with stable angina. On the other hand, a significant relationship was observed between serum BNP level and parameters such as CK-MB, Gensini score, and LVEF. Conclusion: Although in this study, an increase in serum BNP levels was observed in patients with acute myocardial infarction and stable angina, but there was no significant relationship between serum BNP levels and EFT. For a more detailed examination, it is recommended to conduct additional studies with a larger sample size

    Introduction & Objective: Beta thalassemia is a specific genetic disease with autosomal recessive inherited pattern in the world and Iran is not one of the most diseases that exist in age and sex groups that are present in this disease is not controlled in this disease and There is no cure. Be effective. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of polymorphisms or HINC, RSAI, RDB, XMN, in patients with beta thalassemia minor in Ardabil province. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 53 beta-thalassemia patients referred to the genetics department of Imam Khomeini Hospital and Homa Genetics Laboratory in Ardabil province were studied. Blood samples were taken from all relevant patients to determine the type of gene mutation. The experiments were performed in the first stage of DNA extraction. In the next stage, PCR samples were genetically evaluated to determine genetic mutations using RDB-Sequence-RFLP-Haplotype methods. Results: A total of 53 samples were examined, of which 56.6% were male and the rest were female. The most positive cases in the first and second ranks were related to XmnI and AvaII enzymes with 73.5% and 60.3%, respectively. The most common mutation extracted in the studied samples with 14 cases (26.4%) was IVS2.1. Among the common mutations extracted by RDB method was related to IVS 1.2 with 26.4%. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the distribution of genetic mutations in the studied samples can be different from other places and to better identify these mutations based on existing techniques, future studies can be performed on more numerous samples and detailed tests He also performed targeted genetic counseling to control and prevent the disease in the future

    Comparing the effect of Mineral trioxide aggregate, Calcium enriched mixture, Biodentine and Calcium hydroxide on Odontoblastic differentiation, inflammatory response, and Angiogenic potential of human dental pulp cells

    Introduction: Reparative dentinogenesis is the result of successive and interrelated processes, including chemotaxis, proliferation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix remodeling, and cell differentiation. This in vitro experimental study was designed to compare some biocompatibility properties of four common cements used in direct pulp capping. Methods and Materials: HDPCs and HUVECs were cultured and tube formation test and the following analysis were performed on the cultured cells: 1. Assessing ALP activity. 2. Expression analyses of the genes related with odontogenesis, inflammation, angiogenesis and osteogenesis. 3. Tube formation test. 4. Detection of NO and PGE2 in the supernatant of human dental pulp cell culture solution. For statistical analysis t-test, Mann-Whiteny and ANOVA tests were performed by Prism v.8 and a level of p <0.05 was considered to be significant. Results: Regarding the cytotoxicity, Biodentin showed the lowest toxicity in 48 hours and 7 days. MTA performed best in cell viability test. In the context of angiogenesis, MTA cement showed the highest rate of angiogenesis. Regarding the odontogenesis, Biodentin showed the highest gene expression. In the expression of inflammatory genes evaluation, it was found that MTA causes the lowest expression of inflammatory genes. Finally, the crucial role of CH cement was identified in the expression of genes involved in osteogenesis. Conclusion: The best pulp capping cement is the capping that in addition to angiogenesis and osteogenesis, has a positive effect on angiogenesis and also has anti-inflammatory properties and has the highest degree of biocompatibility. As a result, summarizing the results of this study, it can be said that MTA cement has more positive characteristics compared to CH, CEM and Biodentin cements to be used as a suitable candidate for pulp capping

    Evaluation of Cross-Infection Control Among Dentistry Clinics and dental Laboratories in Ardabil-1399

    Introduction: Controlling the transmission of infection in the dental offices is one of the special priorities due to continuous contact with infected oral secretions and blood of patients. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the control of cross-infection between dental offices and dental laboratories in Ardabil in 2020. Materials & Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, dental prosthesis laboratories with warrant in Ardabil (26) and dental specialists (25), and 87 general dentists were studied. A Standard questionnaire was used for investigating theinfection control in dental offices and dental laboratories of Ardabil. After data collection, data analysis was performedusing chi-square test using SPSS version 24 at a 5% error level. Results: The results showed that there wasn’t any significant difference in the use of disposable gloves, goggles, masksbetween general and specialist dentists and laboratory technicians (P >0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed between general and specialist dentists in sterilizing the hand piece, washing the molds after taking it out of the mouth, the type of molding material, disinfecting the trays after returning from the laboratory, disinfecting the tested works before sending them to the laboratory (P >0.05);however, there was a significant difference between general and specialist dentists in disinfecting the molds, the type of disinfectant, the method of disinfecting the molds, the duration of disinfect, the way the molds were sent to the laboratory, the disinfection of the works sent from the laboratories before testing on the patient (P 0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed in hepatitis B vaccination between specialized and general personals of dentists and laboratory technicians (P >0.05). Conclusion: According to the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the principles of cross-infection control are observed in specialized and general dentists and laboratory technicians in Ardabil and more attention should also be paid

    Assessment of the achievement of practical objectives in prosthodontics education department in faculty of dentistry of Ardabil University of Medical Sciences from the viewpoint of the students during 2019-2020

    Introduction: The educational process will be useful if the goals for which they are attained are fulfilled during, or after, the course. The aim of this study was to evaluate the achievement of the educational goals of the Prosthodontics Department of Ardabil dental collage in 2020-2021. Materials and Methods: The method of this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was based on CIPP model (Contect, Input, Process, Product). The study population included all final year dental students of Ardabil University who had successfully passed all their theoretical and practical units and were included in the study by census method. Preliminary information including gender, marital status and level of interest in the field of study were recorded for all individuals. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the achievement of the practical goals of the prosthetics department in three parts: partial removable prosthesis, complete prosthesis and fixed prosthesis, which included four indicators of seeing, listening, performing experience and performing ability. The relationship between gender, marital status and interest in the field of study with the achievement of practical goals of the prosthetics department was measured using chi-square test using SPSS software version 22. Results: The results showed that in the partial removable prosthesis, the index of seeing was 66.7%, listening was 73.42% and performing was 73.6%. Only 9.6% of the subjects had excellent ability and 33.6% had good ability to perform partial prosthesis. In the complete removable prosthesis section, the seeing index was 60.72%, listening was 81.2% and performing was 62.47%. Only 11.97% of subjects had excellent ability and 29.15% had good ability to perform partial prosthesis. In the fixed prosthesis section, the index of seeing was 58.2%, listening was 78.2% and performing was 62.2%. Only 11.1% of people had excellent ability and 30.4% had good ability to perform partial prosthesis. In general, the index of seeing was 60.95%, listening was 78.4% and performing was 67.67%. Only 11.12% of subjects had excellent ability and 30.6% had good ability to perform prosthesis. The results showed that gender, interest, and marital status were significantly associated with the achievement of practical goals of the prosthetics department. According to the marital status, significantly differences in seeing in partial and complete prosthesis, in listening in partial prosthesis, and in performing in complete prosthesis were obsderved. Conclusion: In general, the results of the present study showed that the achievement of the educational goals of partial removable prosthesis, complete removable prosthesis and fixed prosthesis in the seeing, listening and performing is not desirable at good and perfect levels

    Title: A comparative study of percentage of gutta-percha filled areas and push-out bond strength in canals obturated with single cone and lateral compaction techniques using AHplus and new generation bioceramic sure-seal root sealers. Introduction: Based on manufacturers claims new generation of bioceramic sealers possess much better features in comparison with previously used sealers; that allows dentists to perform treatments with better prognostic factors using less complicated obturation techniques such as single cone. under the lights of this fact this study aims in comparing percentage of gutta percha filled areas and push out bond strength in canals obturated with 2 different sealers(AHplus and sure seal root) and 2 different obturation techniques(single cone and cold lateral compaction) Methods and materials: in this experimental study 88 single rooted with straight and unique canals were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups. All specimen cut 1mm above the CEJ line.then cleansing and irrigation were performed and canals obturated in following order:G1(SAH). Samples in this group obturated with AHplus sealer and single cone technique.G2(LAH) obturated with AHplus sealer and cold lateral condensation technique.G3(SS) obturated with sure seal root sealer and single cone technique.G4(LS) obturated with sure seal root sealer and cold lateral condensation technique. then horizontal sections with 3mm thickness were prepared and digital images with 25 magnification were recorded in order to evaluate percentage of canal areas filled with gutta percha,sealer and voids using imageJ software.in the next step push out bond test performed on the samples using a universal test machine.also modes of failure evaluated after performing push out test;using an optical microscope.date analyzed using spss software(version22) and by means of t independent,one way analysis of variance,two way and three way analysis of variance and chi-square analysis and the significance level was set at 0.05. Results::results showed that there was statstical difference between mean values of push out bond strength in the LS group and the SAH and LAH groups and the values in LS group were higher.but there was no statistically difference between other groups in terms of obturation technique and sealer type(p>0.05).also no significant relationship was found between the group of study and the type or frequency of failure.The average percentage of gutta percha in AHplus group was higher than the average in sure seal root group(p0.05) on the other hand the average sealers values in AHplus group was lower;compared with sure seal root group.also the average of sealer percentage values in coronal group was higher in comparison with medial and apical groups. Conclusion:new biocermic sure seal root sealer has desirable physical and chemical properties and sealing ability.and in terms of these features can be compared with commonly used resin sealerd ;however higher push out bond strength values in sure seal root cold lateral compaction group manifests that this obturation technique still should be considered as gold standard in obturation protocol
