The Role of Health Beliefs and Illness Perceptions in Predicting Health-Promoting Behaviors in Cancer Patients
Background and Objective: Health promoting behaviors is one of the most important factors in the physical and mental outcomes of cancer patients. The Current study was conducted in order to determination of the role of health beliefs and Illness Perception in predicting Health Promoting Behaviors of patients with cancer.
Methods: In this cross sectional study, 125 cancer patients, hospitalized in the Hematology section of Imam Khomeini hospital in Ardebil in the autumn of 2015 that were selected by convenience sampling, participated. For collecting data, the Illness Perception questionnaire, the Health Belief indexes and the Health- Promoting Lifestyle Profile were used. Gathered data were analyzed via Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis using SPSS19.
Results: The results showed that the Health promoting behaviors in cancer patients positively correlated to the General Health Threat (r= -0/18, P< 0/05), the Perceived vulnerability (r= -0/33, P< 0/001), the Perceived intensity (r= -0/30, P< 0/001) and the Self-Helping benefits (r= -0/19, P< 0/05). Among the Illness Perception components, the Health Promoting Behaviors have a positive relationship with the Acute timeline (r= -0/52, P< 0/001), the Periodic timeline (r= -0/31, P< 0/001), the Outcomes of disease (r= -0/31, P< 0/001) and the Emotional representations (r= -0/35, P< 0/001) but have a negative relationship with Self-Control (r= 0/35, P< 0/001). Also, multiple regression analysis showed that 23% of the variance of the Health Promoting Behaviors is explained with the Health Beliefs and 39% of that is explained by the Illness Perception.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the beliefs about the situation and the outcomes of the disease and the quality of the Illness Perception in cancer patients have a role in their tendency for doing the Health promoting behaviors
Comparision of the efficacy of potassium citrate and polycitrate-¬K in children and infants with urolithiasis
Background and Objective: Renal stones are one of the important diseases among children and infants. Since the surgical treatment has side effect and risks. Drug treatment methods are very important. Two of the drugs used to treat these stones are potassium citrate and potassium poly-citrate. The aim of this study was to compare the therapeutic effect of the two drugs on the treatment of renal stones in children and infants.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial study, 70 patients under the age of 17 years with renal stones who referred to Nephrology clinic of Booali hospital in Ardabil city were selected and divided into two groups of 35.One of the groups was treated with citrate potassium and the other one with potassium poly-citrate and the effect of drugs was compared on the basis of age, sex, etc. In all the surveys significant level was considered less than 0.05.
Result: In each group, the therapeutic effects of both drugs were significantly increased. The results of our study showed that there was no significant difference between the mean stone size in the third and sixth months of treatment in the potassium citrate drug group. However, respond to treatment in the age group of 61 to 120 months in the drug group of potassium citrate¬ was more than in the group of poly-citrate potassium.
Conclusion: Our study showed that it seems there is no significant difference between the efficacy of the two drugs potassium citrate and potassium poly-citrate. 85% of the patients treated with potassium citrate and 91% of patients treated with poly-citrate were cured, but no significant difference was found between the efficacies of the two drugs
Establishment of Hepatic Iron Overload Model and Its Effect on Serum Hepcidin Levels in Male Sprague Rats
Introduction: Iron toxicity is caused by the accumulation of iron in different organs, especially the liver, heart and endocrine glands. This disorder causes side effects such as growth retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver and heart failure. This study paves the way for identifying the ways of overcoming this disorder through iron overload model.
Methods: In this study, 12 adult male Sprague rats weighing 280-300 g were used. 12 Sprague rats were divided into two groups: control and iron overload groups. To create iron overload, iron dextran was injected. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining was used for the examination of iron deposits in the liver tissue. Serum hepcidin levels were measured by ELISA method. Serum iron levels were measured using the photometric method.
Results: The results showed a considerable iron accumulation in liver tissue of the Sprague rats in intervention group compared to the control group. Serum hepcidin (0.22±0.02 versus 0.12±0.01 pg/dl) and iron (258±6.18 versus 186±3.34 mg/dl) levels in the iron overload group were more than that of the control group and both groups had a significant relationship under iron overload conditions (P<0.05).
Conclusions: Intraperitoneal injection of 75 mg/kg iron dextran creates iron overload model and increases serum Hepcidin levels in Sprague rats. This model is used for the investigation of iron metabolism pathways and its disorders
Diagnostic value of ultrasonography in bone erosion of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in comparison with plain radiography
Background and Objective: Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common systemic inflammatory disease of joints with global prevalence of 1% in whole life. The onset of the disease can occurs in any age,but its peak is between 30 and 50 years old. Disability in this disease is common and noticeable. In a cohort study in United States, 35% of people with rheumatoid arthritis experienced disability after 10 years. Radiography of the hands and feet (distal to wrist) should be performed to evaluate juxtra articular erosive changes that is characteristic for RA.The presence of these changes can indicate of more invasive types of rheumatoid arthritis. Our person from this study is comparing the two methods of radiography and sonography in diagnosis of this disease.
Methodes and material: 111 patients with routine laboratory testes of RA, including C reactive protein and rheumatoid factor measured by nephleometry who are new cases of rheumatoid arthritis with certain diagnosis, have been randomly selected and as an example Studied. The questionnaire which includes demographic informations such as age, gender, place of residence, history of smoking, education level and history of rheumatologic disease. Then, the dominant hand and wrist radiographies in one clicke and high resolution sonography of dominant hands wrists MCP were performed.Erosion sites were registeredm Erosion was recorded in graphy and the sonography at wrist and the compared with eachother and the consistency of the lesions was evaluated at the time of diagnosis.
Result: The results of this study showed that there is no significant difference between these two methods but in diagnosis of number of articular erosion and articular erosion diagnosis in persons young than 44years old sonography had better performance, so that in persons young than 44 years old sonography had 98% and radiography had 89% diagnosis value in people older than 44years old sonography and radiography had 96% diagnostic vaiue.
Conclusion: this study showed that there is no significant difference in diagnostic value of sonography in bone erosion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis in comparison with radiography in terms of sex,but in diagnosis number of joint erosion and diagnosing joint erosion in persons youngthe than 44 years old sonography has better performanc
