Analysis of Breakdown Voltage of Low Pour Point Synthetic Ester Insulating Liquids under Lightning Impulse Voltage of both Polarities
In this article, lightning impulse breakdown behaviour of two low pour point synthetic ester liquids is presented in comparison to a typical synthetic ester at both positive and negative polarities. Traditional mineral insulating oil has been also considered for reference purposes. A detailed breakdown behaviour analysis of the four test liquids under a non-uniform field (medium gap, point-plane electrode system) and quasi-uniform field (smaller gap, U-plane electrode system) is envisaged. The lightning impulse breakdown measurements based on the source voltage waveforms and light activity during the discharge process are presented. The Weibull breakdown failure rates and streamer velocity during the breakdown of different liquids for all the cases (+/- polarities and both electrode configurations) are reported in support of the discussions. In the case of non-uniform fields, the lightning breakdown voltage of the low pour point liquids is found to be higher than typical synthetic esters and is comparable to mineral oil under both polarities. While in the case of quasi-uniform field, the lightning breakdown voltage of the low pour point liquids is found to be lower than mineral oil and comparable to the typical synthetic ester under both polarities. These findings add to limited knowledge on the application of esters in cold countries and allow insulation designers to estimate the behaviour of the low pour point synthetic ester liquids under lightning conditions
A tale of two seasons: Distinct seasonal viral communities in a thermokarst lake
Thermokarst lakes are important features of subarctic landscapes and are a substantial source of greenhouse gases, although the extent of gas produced varies seasonally. Microbial communities are responsible for the production of methane and CO2 but the “top down” forces that influence microbial dynamics (i.e., grazers and viruses) and how they vary temporally within these lakes are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to examine viral diversity over time to elucidate the seasonal structure of the viral communities in thermokarst lakes. We produced virus-enriched metagenomes from a subarctic peatland thermokarst lake in the summer and winter over three years. The vast majority of vOTUs assigned to viral families belonged to Caudovirales (Caudoviricetes), notably the morphological groups myovirus, siphovirus and podovirus. We identified two distinct communities: a dynamic, seasonal community in the oxygenated surface layer during the summer and a stable community found in the anoxic water layer at the bottom of the lake in summer and throughout much of the water column in winter. Comparison with other permafrost and northern lake metagenomes highlighted the distinct composition of viral communities in this permafrost thaw lake ecosystem
The western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris Heckel, 1837) is expanding its range into the St. Lawrence River: first record in Quebec
The invasive western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris) was introduced in the Great Lakes in the 1990s. Since then, its range slowly expanded downstream into Ontario’s portion of the St. Lawrence River. This rapid communication reports on the first occurrence of a western tubenose goby found in Lake St. Francis (St. Lawrence River, Quebec) in August 2022. The specimen, the study area and the sampling methodology are described while hypotheses about its presence and expansion are explored
Reinforced PDMS elastomer nanocomposites: effectiveness of in-situ nano-silica content on flashover voltage and treeing phenomena
Large interfacial surface area between the inorganic particles and the polymer matrix has made nanocomposites an interesting composition for a wide range of applications including high-voltage insulating materials. However, nanofiller dispersion is challenging and there is always a specific percolation threshold that narrows the particle content in a polymer dispersion. This research attempt to benefit the in situ silica precipitation technique to avoid all problems associated with nanoparticle dispersion and furthermore introduce a technique to increase the nano-silica content. In this regard, elastomeric silicone nanocomposites loaded with various amount of nano-silica, low to high, is fabricated. It is revealed that the nanocomposite loaded with a high quantity of nano-silica particles exhibited high thermal stability and heat resistivity. Utilized as a coating, this nanocomposite could successfully increase the flashover voltage and present less damage after electrical discharges. Moreover, the electrical treeing investigation illustrates a different distribution of tree structure depending on nano-silica content which could be beneficial in diverse electrical insulating applications
Development of a dynamic ice penetration model for runway de-icing products through performance experimental characterization
During winter, the clear runway concept is crucial to airports for maintaining passenger and employee safety. Research can optimize de-icing product application rates, thereby reducing costs and environmental impact. Currently, three aerospace standards exist for evaluating the performance of runway de-icing products. These comparative tests—ice melting, ice undercutting, and ice penetration tests—are carried out jointly in a systematic way and indicate whether a runway de-icing product is effective in actively reducing the presence of ice. Here we present a numerical model for the ice penetration method, for fluid runway de-icing product, with the goal of deepening the knowledge in this field. We apply a series of laboratory-based tests to measure the performance of runway de-icing products, and develop a new model to analyze the behavior of each product. The principal observation is that the product is more effective at 1 min and effectiveness decreases following an inverse logarithmic curve trend to 30 min. Through modeling, we observe that the dominant mode of heat transfer is natural laminar convection, and the model predicts a uniform melt length for the entire tube section. Thus, simplified ice penetration modeling using AS6211 can acceptably predict the rate of ice penetration as a function of time (mm/min), with the modeling confirmed by our experimental results. The future application of our simplified model to other existing de-icing fluid characterization test methods could identify the effects of diluted or undiluted solid runway de-icing products on ice penetration rates and ultimately on spreading rates
Development of a damage simulator for seismic vulnerability assessment of electrical installations
Over recent years, seismic losses are increasing in terms of magnitude and frequency, thereby severely affecting societies and economies. The increase in seismic losses is mainly due to the rapid growth of exposure and population in earthquake-prone areas worldwide. Recent earthquakes revealed the vulnerability of electric power networks to seismic events. To assess the seismic vulnerability of transmission towers and substations, a user-friendly damage simulator that combines three major components, namely, seismic hazard including local site conditions, inventory of exposed towers, substations and respective vulnerabilities, is developed in this thesis. Firstly, a critical review of existing methods for seismic risk analysis and software is conducted to determine important parameters in the development of the damage simulator. Then, the main advantages and inconveniences of each software are highlighted. The computation starts with the selection and calculation of the deterministic or probabilistic seismic hazard input parameters and the evaluation of the site effects. A major step in the development of this damage simulator is incorporating the effects of local geological and geotechnical conditions. The shear wave velocity (??) of the top 30 m (??30) and often the fundamental site period (?0) are then used as predictors of potential amplification. Recognizing that the uncertainties of local soil properties inevitably affect the seismic site response, a stochastic approach for evaluating ??30and ?0is proposed, considering a combination of probabilistic ??–depth correlations with a probabilistic 3D geological model. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are applied to study the influence of the uncertainties on the seismic site characterization model. The application uses open-source software without any financial cost to users. The computation starts with the selection and calculation of the deterministic or probabilistic seismic hazard input parameters and the evaluation of the site effects. Spectral accelerations at the fundamental period of vibration of transmission towers and peak ground acceleration for substations are considered as the intensity measures (IMs) of the transitory seismic shaking. The probabilistic assessment incorporates uncertainties of the hazard parameters. The epistemic uncertainty is addressed through the logic tree approach introduced in the latest National Building Code of Canada (NBCC2020), whereas the aleatory uncertainty is captured by enabling the MC analysis option. The variability in the damage measure is captured through the application of the MC method to the damage states of the electrical installation structure as it is subjected to the applied IMs. To illustrate the effectiveness of the developed software, an example of seismic site characterization, hazard assessment, and vulnerability analysis of electric transmission installations of Hydro-Quebec in the Saguenay region, Canada, is presented.
This work explores my environmental identity through an auto-ethnographic approach of research-creation in the creation of artworks inspired by solastalgia. My encounter with Roger Wylde questioned my identity, leading me to realize our inextricable link with nature. I then reconnected with this identity, acknowledging the solastalgia that inhabits me in the face of the landscapes of my childhood. This emotion, associated with many manifestations of eco-anxiety, was indeed defined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht. In art, Louise Boisclair talks about ecospheric art to designate creation related to Earth and the life it harbors. Hence, within this research-creation, I ask myself: how can creation transform my relationship with nature as well as my environmental identity and consequently, transform the works that result from it? To understand solastalgia and its influence on creation, I chose an auto-ethnographic methodology of research-creation, emphasizing my personal experience. This choice allows me to record the evolution of my environmental identity. Using personal photographic archives, machine learning, and other technological tools, I explore the transformation of my environmental identity. To date, three works have been created in the form of immersive and aesthetic experiences, and the creative process continues. The first work is an augmented speaking stick, used as a tangible interface during a performance. The second creation is an immersive audio-visual installation, designed to share my feeling of solastalgia. The third work is a triptych series of archives, transformed by the application of machine learning techniques. My artistic practice, based on the connection to the environment, others, and myself, intrinsically links the object of creation to its environment and its creator. This research-creation process, reflecting my transformation, shapes my approach to design and creation in a holistic way
Elevated-temperature mechanical, creep and fatigue behavior of aluminum-copper cast aluminum alloys
Aluminum cast alloys have gained extensive utilization within the automotive industry as substitutes for gray cast iron in the fabrication of crucial combustion engine components, including engine blocks and cylinder heads. Notably, Al–Cu cast alloys have garnered substantial attention for their applications in internal combustion engines due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and superior mechanical performance, both at ambient and elevated temperatures. However, the ongoing advancements in engine technology necessitate operation under elevated conditions, including high operating temperatures (~300 ℃) and enhanced combustion pressures (~200 bar). Consequently, this arises a need to further enhance the elevated-temperature performances, encompassing strength, resistance to creep, and fatigue endurance, of Al-Cu alloys to align with the evolving demands of future engines. Recent investigations have revealed that the high-temperature properties of Al-Cu alloys can be significantly improved by microalloying. Hence, this project focuses on the incorporation of microalloying elements, specifically magnesium and transition elements (titanium, zirconium, vanadium), to comprehensively investigate their influence on the elevated-temperature properties of Al-Cu 224 cast alloys. In the first part, the influence of microalloying with Mg (0–0.36 wt.%) on the elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance of Al-Cu 224 cast alloys was investigated. The Mg-containing alloys yielded finer and denser θ′ precipitates after high-temperature stabilization (300 ℃/100 h) than the Mg-free alloy, which improved the yield strength at both room temperature and 300 ℃. Compressive creep tests were conducted at 300 ℃ over a wide range of the applied stresses (45–100 MPa). The results showed that the creep resistance increased with increasing Mg content at any fixed applied stress, and the alloy with 0.36 wt.% Mg exhibited the best creep resistance among the four alloys studied. During creep deformation, the θ′ precipitates continued to coarsen. However, Mg microalloying greatly stabilized the θ′ precipitates in the matrix by slowing down the coarsening process. An obvious break was observed in the creep rate curves with different stress exponents (n). Below the break in the low-stress regime (LSR), stress exponent (n) was ~ 3, whereas it increased to 9-12 above the break in the high-stress regime (HSR). In the LSR, the creep was controlled by the dislocation climbing, and it transformed into the Orowan looping in the HSR. In the second part, the effects of individual and combined additions of transition elements (TEs) Zr, Ti, and V on the microstructure evolution and elevated-temperature mechanical and creep properties of Al-Cu 224 cast alloys were investigated. All alloys had a mixed precipitate microstructure of θʺ- and θʹ-Al2Cu after T7 heat treatment. During the thermal exposure at 300 ℃, θʺ transferred into θʹ as the predominant strengthening phase. The coarsening resistance of θʹ during the thermal exposure and further creep deformation was greatly improved by the addition of TEs. Individually, Zr addition demonstrated the best efficiency in stabilizing θʹ, while the combination of Zr + V and Ti + Zr + V achieved the highest efficiency. The addition of TEs generally improved the yield strength (YS) at 300 ℃, and the ZrV and TiZrV alloys achieved the highest YS. A close correlation between the YS and the distribution and thermal stability of θʹ was observed. The creep resistance at elevated temperatures was affected by the thermal stability of θʹ and grain size. Zr-containing alloys (ZrV, Zr, and TiZrV) exhibit superior creep resistance. In terms of comprehensive properties, the combined addition of TiZrV alloy exhibited the best elevated-temperature performance. In the third part, the effects of Mg addition on the cyclic deformation and fatigue life behaviors of Al-Cu 224 cast alloys were investigated under isothermal low cycle fatigue (LCF) at 300 ℃ and out-of-phase thermo-mechanical fatigue (OP-TMF) in the temperature range 60–300 ℃. The results show that all tested alloys experienced cyclic softening during both LCF and OP-TMF, whereas the softening ratio of Mg-containing alloys was lower than that of the base alloy free of Mg because of the lower coarsening rate of θ'-Al2Cu precipitates. Under both LCF and TMF, near-surface porosity and brittle intermetallic particles were considered sources of crack initiation. TMF lives were inferior to LCF lives under the same strain amplitude because of the combined damage effect of the cyclic mechanical and thermal loadings. Under LCF, the addition of Mg enhanced the fatigue performance because of the co-existing θʺ and θʹ precipitates and the higher thermal resistance of θʹ; under TMF, it led to a slight reduction in fatigue performance. The hysteresis energy model was successfully applied to predict the LCF and TMF lifetimes. The predicted results agree well with the experimentally measured LCF and TMF lifetimes.
Geochemical variation of oxide-apatite mineralization associated with Proterozoic massif-type anorthosites in the Central Grenville Province, Quebec, Canada
A variety of magmatic oxide-apatite mineralization is spatially and temporally associated with Proterozoic AMCG (Anorthosite–Mangerite–Charnockite–Granite) suites, being of both economic and scientific interest, hosting significant amounts of critical and strategic metals, such as Ti, V and P. However, the origin and genetic relationship of both AMCG host and oxide-apatite mineralization are still highly debated, as well as the exact tectonic setting. Oxide-apatite mineralization is commonly interpreted as crystallizing from residual Fe-Ti-V-P rich melts (ferrodiorite/jotunite composition), after extensive polybaric crystallization of plagioclase and mafic silicates during the formation of anorthosite massifs. The two younger AMCG suites in the Central Grenville Province (1082-1045 Ma Pipmuacan and 1020-1008 Ma Valin) have a complex petrogenetic evolution, presenting a geochemical variation of oxide-apatite mineralization (from Ti-magnetite-dominated to hemo-ilmenite-dominated mineralization) according to the host anorthosite composition (labradorite- or andesine-type) and its age. Andesine-type anorthosite massifs that are younger than 1100 Ma are orthopyroxene-bearing and host hemo-ilmenite (± apatite) mineralization, whereas labradorite-type anorthosite massifs which are older than 1100 Ma, are olivine-bearing and host Ti-magnetite (± apatite) mineralization. The reason for this mineralogical and geochemical variation of oxide-apatite mineralization with time is not understood but could be due change in parental melts and/or degrees of crustal contamination or fractional crystallization. This thesis aims to better characterize this geochemical variation in both ore-deposit and regional scales in the Central Grenville Province, understanding the processes that control their compositional variation (e.g., source of magma, crustal contamination, evolution of residual ferrodiorite/jotuntite magmas) through LA-ICP-MS whole rock and mineral chemistry of plagioclase, ilmenite, magnetite and apatite, as well U-Pb-Hf isotopes in zircon. This methodology was applied to Fe-Ti-(P) mineralization (hemo-ilmenite dominated) at three different scales to better characterize the geochemical variation within: I) a single lenticular oxide-apatite-norite deposit (Lac à l’Orignal); a larger scale through II) several mineralized lenses composed by different Fe-Ti-P cumulates (e.g., massive oxides, nelsonite and oxide-apatite-norite at Lac Mirepoix); a regional scale, III) comparing the different locations of Fe-Ti-P mineralization hosted in the anorthosites and mangerites of the Pipmuacan (Lac de l’Abbondance, L’Étang, Lac Périgny) and Valin (Lac Brûlé, Mattawa and La Hache) AMCG suites with mineralization at Lac à l’Orignal and Lac Mirepoix (Vanel Anorthosite), as well as published data from Fe-Ti-P deposits from the Grenville Province (e.g, Lac Tio, Grader Intrusion, Saint Urbain). The Lac à l’Orignal Fe-Ti-P deposit, hosted in the 1080 (±2) Ma Vanel Anorthosite near the northern border of the 1016 (±2) Ma Mattawa Anorthosite, comprises a lenticular structure of oxide apatite norite (OAN) with thin layers of apatite-bearing anorthosite and minor amounts of nelsonite (massive Fe-Ti oxides and apatite). The mineralization is dominated by hemo-ilmenite, accompanied by apatite and a minor amount of magnetite at the borders, whereas the core is dominated by ilmenite, magnetite, and apatite. In-situ U-Pb dating of magmatic zircon from the mineralization indicates that the Lac à l’Orignal deposit is a multi-injection intrusion with two different crystallization ages between the younger core (993 ± 13 Ma) and the older upper border (1069 ± 12 Ma) of the intrusion. These ages are similar to those of nearby anorthosite massifs (Mattawa and Vanel anorthosites, respectively). In-situ trace element analysis of plagioclase, apatite and oxides reveals subtle variations in Cr, Ni and V related to differentiation under relatively high-fO2 conditions (FMQ = +0.9 to +1.7). Calculated melt compositions from apatite indicates a similar parental magma for both the border and core that matches the composition of high-Fe-Ti-P ferrodiorite dykes at Lac à l’Original. Sub-solidus inter-oxide equilibration modified the original composition of the different cumulates in the intrusion. The absence of extensive massive oxide cumulates and the presence of higher amounts of cumulus magnetite and apatite, supported by mineral chemistry, denotes a more evolved character for the Lac à l’Orignal deposit compared with other Fe-Ti-(P) deposits in the Grenville Province (e.g., Lac Tio, Grader intrusion). Petrogenetically, the Lac à l’Orignal Fe-Ti-P deposit corresponds to an evolved part of a low-Ti/Fe system in the Grenville Province in the late stages of differentiation of ferrodiorite/jotunite magmas. The nearby Lac Mirepoix Fe-Ti-P mineralization is also (hemo)-ilmenite-dominated, accompanied by magnetite and apatite. This ‘layered intrusion’ is subdivided in three different zones due to the appearance of different cumulate phases: zone I comprises mainly massive oxide (>70% hemo-ilmenite ± magnetite) layers hosted in anorthosite. Towards the center (zone II), massive oxide layers are less common whereas apatite-bearing cumulates appear, forming massive nelsonite (50-70% magnetite ± ilmenite and 25-30% apatite) and oxide apatite norite (OAN, 15-25% hemo-ilmenite ± magnetite and 8-20% apatite). Finally, zone III is marked by the alternance of OAN layers (10-25m), richer in magnetite, in addition to (hemo)-ilmenite and apatite, and an absence of massive oxide and nelsonite. In-situ trace element analysis of plagioclase, apatite and oxides reveals cryptic variations related to magma differentiation and multiple injections of ferrodiorite parental magmas of similar composition from which the OAN and nelsonite crysatllized from. Similar to Lac à l’Orignal, in-situ U-Pb dating of zircon from the OAN mineralization itself indicates two different crystallization ages between zone III (1048 ± 8Ma) and zone I (964 ± 9 Ma), favoring a model of multi-injections rather than in-situ crystallization of a single layered intrusion, which is supported by trace element geochemistry. The Lac Mirepoix mineralization records the following fractional crystallization sequence of a high-Ti-P magma, residual after the anorthosite formation: first, massive oxides of hemo-ilmenite crystallized (high Ti/Fe) by oxide settling, with primitive compositions, similar to the world-class Lac Tio deposit. The oxide-apatite mineralization (nelsonite and OAN) crystallized from the residual liquid (lower Ti/Fe, evolved compositions) in which magnetite and apatite were more abundant, similar to nearby mineralization in the area (e.g. Lac à l’Orignal Fe-Ti-P mineralization). The observed decrease in Ti content of the evolving melt is supported by the liquid line of descent of several ferrodiorite dykes within the host-rocks and mineralization. The regional study of several Fe-Ti-P mineralization in the two younger Pipmuacan and Valin AMCG suites demonstrates a similar geochemical evolution related to fractional crystallization of parental ferrodiorite magma, with massive oxides (hemo-ilmenite ± magnetite) crystallizing first from high Ti/Fe residual melts followed by apatite-bearing nelsonites ((hemo)-ilmenite + magnetite + apatite), oxide apatite norite ((hemo)-ilmenite + magnetite + apatite + silicates) crystallizing from low-Ti/Fe melts. The most evolved melts (jotunite composition) formed mineralized mangerites (ilmenite + magnetite + apatite + oligoclase + K-feldspar + quartz). Most of the Fe-Ti-P mineralization in this study is within the range of previous ages for the Pimuacan and Valin AMCG suites (1080 – 950Ma). However, U-Pb dating of the mineralized cumulates in this study resulted in quite different ages (>50Ma) from previously publications on each respective host-AMCG. We propose a complex model of multiple injections of residual Fe-Ti-P-rich liquids drained from or filter-pressed within diapirs of plagioclase-rich mushes that were emplaced over 80 Mys apart along the same crustal detachment zone. In-situ U-Pb-Hf isotopes in zircon from Fe-Ti-P mineralization in this study have mainly chondritic to slightly positive and negative εHf values, in which mineralization in the Labrieville and Mattawa anorthosites present more suprachondritic Hf signature (εHf: +3.0 to +7.0; U-Pb dating: 1065 (± 5Ma) to 990 (± 7Ma)), possibly reflecting contamination from juvenile crust, similar to mineralization in the Saint Urbain Anorthosite. Mineralization associated with the Vanel Anorthosite and the mangerites of La Hache and Poulin de Courval present a more enriched Hf signature (εHf: -5.0 to +7.4; U-Pb dating: 964 (± 9Ma) to 1115 (± 11Ma)), either being relatively more contaminated, and/or associated with more enriched mantle source(s) in relation to the mineralization at Labrieville and Mattawa. The trace element patterns of apatite from all of the Fe-Ti-P mineralization have LREE enriched patterns very similar to apatite from mafic layered intrusions, associated with mantle plumes, with negligible crustal contamination. This indicates the involvement of an asthenospheric enriched mantle source in forming the Fe-Ti-P rich melts for the different Fe-Ti-P mineralization in this study, rather than a depleted mantle source or enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle as commonly proposed in previous tectonic models for the Grenville AMCG magmatism. Moreover, the Lu-Hf data reveal that Fe-Ti-P mineralization in Vanel Anorthosite and the mangerites of La Hache and Poulin de Courval probably underwent low- to moderate lower crustal contamination. Therefore, we show for the first time that apatite and zircon geochemistry provide important constraints on the mantle source and role of contamination in the petrogenesis of AMCG suites in the Grenville Province, which should be taken into account for the tectonic model of the Grenville.
Experimental measurement and expression of atmospheric ice Young's modulus according to its density
Ice properties are hard to define and vary significantly in literature. While some of this variation can be attributed to different testing methods, the authors believe that most of this variation comes from the nature of the ice accretion itself. To address the problematic of scattering in mechanical properties values, a new approach is proposed which consists of expressing the behavior of atmospheric ice according to its density. Thanks to a hybrid experimental/numerical approach, the accurate measurement of the Young's modulus of atmospheric ice can be done. Ice samples are generated in both cold room and wind tunnel and at many different test conditions. The results obtained in this study confirm the validity of this new approach and gives a concrete relationship between the Young's modulus and the ice density. Finally, the relevance of using porous material hypothesis to explain the relation and the results domain of validity are discussed
