The modern world is facing several issues which revolve mainly around the destructive effects of global warming, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing natural resources. These last decades have seen the emergence of new energy and environmental requirements and challenges giving rise to multiple reflections in different sectors and more particularly in the construction area. In this context, the reutilization of industrial waste to produce concretes and mortars appears as an environmental solution for their disposal as well as the development of ecological and sustainable concretes. A large number of previous studies are synthesized in this thesis. These have focused on the addition of different types of waste materials into the concrete-mortar mix as fine aggregates, coarse aggregates or cement additives and investigated the physical and mechanical properties of the material. As part of the work of this dissertation, the influence of the incorporation of bauxite residues on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete was undertaken at percentages of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% and with each percentage, the bauxite residues were used at diameter of 300 μm, 600 μm, 2 mm and in liquid form. These experimental investigations have shown that the substitution of bauxite residues decreases the workability and the air content of fresh concrete. The mechanical behaviour of the concrete of bauxite residues’ study indicates that the mass substitution of cement by 5% and 10% of bauxite residues improves the mechanical properties of the concrete. Beyond 10% bauxite residue the mechanical strength begins to decrease. Nevertheless, the mechanical strength of up to 20% bauxite residues remains sufficient for using these types of concrete in construction. In addition, an assessment of the reliability of the mechanical behaviour prediction models was carried out for the concretes developed in this study in order to make the necessary modifications to improve their performance. Moreover, the consideration of the bauxite residue content was taken into account. A study of the stress-strain behaviour was also made as part of this work. The stress-strain behaviour was studied by a series of displacement-controlled uniaxial compression tests. Three of the most used stress-strain models in the literature: Popovics model, Collins model and Hoshikuma model are considered for bauxite residue concrete to predict the stress-strain behaviour. The results reveal that the 3 models represent the pre-peak behaviour, with a good correlation. On the other hand, none of these models can correctly represent the post-peak phase of the stress-strain curve. This study developed a post-peak phase stress-strain prediction model based on the Popovics model. The results obtained demonstrate good agreement with the experimental measurements
Development of lightweight Al-based entropy alloys for elevated temperature applications
A series of lightweight Al-based entropy alloys containing Cu, Zn, Cr, V, Ti and Fe has been designed for elevated temperature applications. The microstructure, mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures, and the thermal stability of six entropy alloys (Al93Cu4Zn1Cr1Fe1, Al85Cu11Zn2Cr1Fe1, Al85Cu11Zn1Cr2V1, Al78Cu18Zn2Cr1Fe1, Al78Cu18Zn1Cr2Ti1, and Al78Cu18Zn1Cr2V1) were investigated. Owing to the large chemical difference and high negative enthalpy between Al and the alloying elements, the generation of a large quantity of intermetallic compounds (ICs) was inevitable. With increasing Cu content, the volume fraction of ICs increased significantly. The three high-Cu alloys (Al78Cu18Zn2Cr1Fe1, Al78Cu18Zn1Cr2Ti1, and Al78Cu18Zn1Cr2V1) exhibited high yield strengths of more than 200 MPa and excellent thermal stability at 300 °C. These values are considerably superior to those of most conventional aluminum alloys. The strengthening mechanisms at room and elevated temperatures have been discussed. The favorable thermal stability and good mechanical properties of the high-Cu alloys up to 450 °C indicate their significant potential for high temperature applications
Large-scale genealogical information extraction from handwritten Quebec parish records
This paper presents a complete workflow designed for extracting information from Quebec handwritten parish registers. The acts in these documents contain individual and family information highly valuable for genetic, demographic and social studies of the Quebec population. From an image of parish records, our workflow is able to identify the acts and extract personal information. The workflow is divided into successive steps: page classification, text line detection, handwritten text recognition, named entity recognition and act detection and classification. For all these steps, different machine learning models are compared. Once the information is extracted, validation rules designed by experts are then applied to standardize the extracted information and ensure its consistency with the type of act (birth, marriage and death). This validation step is able to reject records that are considered invalid or merged. The full workflow has been used to process over two million pages of Quebec parish registers from the 19–20th centuries. On a sample comprising 65% of registers, 3.2 million acts were recognized. Verification of the birth and death acts from this sample shows that 74% of them are considered complete and valid. These records will be integrated into the BALSAC database and linked together to recreate family and genealogical relations at large scale
Simulating the effects of long‐distance dispersal and landscape heterogeneity on the eco‐evolutionary outcomes of range expansion in an invasive riverine fish, Tench (Tinca tinca)
Predicting how quickly populations expand their range and whether they will retain genetic diversity when they are introduced to new regions or track environmental conditions suited to their survival is an important applied and theoretical challenge. The literature suggests that long-distance dispersal, landscape heterogeneity and the evolution of dispersal influence populations' expansion rates and genetic diversity. We used individual-based spatially explicit simulations to examine these relationships for Tench (Tinca tinca), an invasive fish expanding its geographical range in eastern North America since the 1990s. Simulated populations varied greatly in expansion rates (1.1–28.6 patches year−1) and genetic diversity metrics, including changes in observed heterozygosity (−19 to +0.8%) and effective number of alleles (−0.32 to −0.01). Populations with greater dispersal distances expanded faster than those with smaller dispersal distances but exhibited considerable variation in expansion rate among local populations, implying less predictable expansions. However, they tended to retain genetic diversity as they expanded, suggesting more predictable evolutionary trajectories. In contrast, populations with smaller dispersal distances spread predictably more slowly but exhibited more variability among local populations in genetic diversity losses. Consistent with empirical data, populations spreading in a longer, narrower dispersal corridor lost more neutral genetic variation to the stochastic fixation of alleles. Given the unprecedented pace of anthropogenic environmental change and the increasing need to manage range-expanding populations, our results have conservation ramifications as they imply that the evolutionary trajectories of populations characterised by shorter dispersal distances spreading in narrower landscapes are more variable and, therefore, less predictable
Ocean current patterns drive the worldwide colonization of eelgrass (Zostera marina)
Currents are unique drivers of oceanic phylogeography and thus determine the distribution of marine coastal species, along with past glaciations and sea-level changes. Here we reconstruct the worldwide colonization history of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.), the most widely distributed marine flowering plant or seagrass from its origin in the Northwest Pacific, based on nuclear and chloroplast genomes. We identified two divergent Pacific clades with evidence for admixture along the East Pacific coast. Two west-to-east (trans-Pacific) colonization events support the key role of the North Pacific Current. Time-calibrated nuclear and chloroplast phylogenies yielded concordant estimates of the arrival of Z. marina in the Atlantic through the Canadian Arctic, suggesting that eelgrass-based ecosystems, hotspots of biodiversity and carbon sequestration, have only been present there for ~243 ky (thousand years). Mediterranean populations were founded ~44 kya, while extant distributions along western and eastern Atlantic shores were founded at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (~19 kya), with at least one major refuge being the North Carolina region. The recent colonization and five- to sevenfold lower genomic diversity of the Atlantic compared to the Pacific populations raises concern and opportunity about how Atlantic eelgrass might respond to rapidly warming coastal oceans
Positive effects of projected climate change on post-disturbance forest regrowth rates in northeastern North American boreal forests
Forest anthropogenic and natural stand-replacing disturbances are increasing worldwide due to global change. Many uncertainties regarding the regeneration and growth of these young forests remain within the context of changing climate. In this study, we investigate the effects of climate, tree species composition, and other landscape-scale environmental variables upon boreal forest regrowth following clearcut logging in eastern Canada. Our main objective was to predict the effects of future climate changes upon post-logging forest height regrowth at a subcontinental scale using high spatial resolution remote sensing data. We modeled forest canopy height (estimated from airborne laser scanning [LiDAR] data over 20 m resolution virtual plots) as a function of time elapsed since the last clearcut along with climate (i.e. temperature and moisture), tree species composition, and other environmental variables (e.g. topography and soil hydrology). Once trained and validated with ∼240 000 plots, the model that was developed in this study was used to predict potential post-logging canopy height regrowth at 20 m resolution across a 240 000 km 2 area following scenarios depicting a range of projected changes in temperature and moisture across the region for 2041–2070. Our results predict an overall beneficial, but limited effect of projected climate changes upon forest regrowth rates in our study area. Stimulatory effects of projected climate change were more pronounced for conifer forests, with growth rates increasing between +5% and +50% over the study area, while mixed and broadleaved forests recorded changes that mostly ranged from −5% to +35%. Predicted increased regrowth rates were mainly associated with increased temperature, while changes in climate moisture had a minor effect. We conclude that such growth gains could partially compensate for the inevitable increase in natural disturbances but should not allow any increase in harvested volumes
Quantitative Estimation of the Gelling in Thermally Aged Natural Ester Dielectric Liquid
One of the major issues with natural ester fluid as transformer insulant is encountered due to the oxidation process, which forms a thin gel layer due to polymerization. This latter can hinder the electrical and heat transfer properties. To understand the process, methodical thermal ageing of natural esters was carried out for a 500-hours duration under atmospheric conditions at 160°C. The characteristic variation of fluid-forming gel was investigated by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) with the thermal ageing, through which molecular weight degradation and iodine index of thermally aged oil have been estimated for transformer applications. It was observed that the molecular weight and iodine index of thermally aged oil were reduced to 8.31% and 43.016% respectively, after 500 hours of ageing. To further comprehend this, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out and heating calorific value (HV) was estimated through bomb calorimetric studies. HV value for 500-hour aged oil and gel was found to be nearly similar. Electrical discharge performance of the oil was estimated through Corona inception voltage (CIV) studies under non-uniform electric field configuration adopting ultra-high frequency sensor (UHF) techniques. Iodine index was found to be in direct correlation with the CIV measurement
Improvement of anode quality through pitch modification
Carbon anodes are used in the electrolysis process to produce primary aluminum. A carbon anode consists of petroleum coke, coal tar pitch, and recycled carbon materials. The anode quality has a direct impact on the energy and carbon consumptions, production costs, and the greenhouse gas emissions. Numerous studies were dedicated to improving the anode properties. Modification of pitch properties may enhance the anode properties. In this study, two types of additive (additive 1 and additive 2) were used at different percentages to modify pitches. In addition, the effect of the pitch type (HQI1 and LQI2) and the pitch percentage on the anode properties were studied using the pitch modification. The results showed that the HQI pitch modified with 1 % additive 1 at 16 % pitch percentage exhibited better anode properties owing to the higher anode density, lower electrical resistivity, and lower air permeability. This is also in good agreement with the wettability results because the additive 1 improved the wettability of coke by the HQI pitches. In general, the HQI pitch modified using the additive 1 led to the high-quality anodes at a lower pitch content compared to its unmodified counterpart, and this could lead to economic benefits. The additive 2 improved the density (higher density) of the anode produced with the LQI pitch. This is in a good agreement with the observed improvement in the wettability of coke by the LQI pitch modified using the additive 2.
