Virtual Whac-A-Mole: Addressing the Patchwork Regulation of Online Hate Speech
Get PDFThis note will discuss hate speech, why it’s dangerous, and how it can spread without being detected. This leads to the exploration of existing international, national, and company regulations regarding online hate speech, the identification of holes and inadequacies, and ultimately suggestions for moving forward in a digital age. The note concludes that co-regulation between communities, nation-states, social media companies, and international treaties would facilitate a cohesive and comprehensive shift, and fill-in the regulatory holes that are present today without sacrificing the individualized nature of national laws and freedom of speech

No full textإن إنتاج المعرفة في مجال التاريخ يُعتبر ضرورة اجتماعية، والدليل على ذلك يتمثل في سعي المجتمعات قاطبة إلى البحث في ماضيها والتعرف عليه؛ والحال أن هذا التنقيب التاريخي يساعد المجتمعات على تفهم حاضرها وتلمس طريقها نحو المستقبل. إن "التاريخ" يدرس الماضي الإنساني باعتباره نتاجا لتراكم مجموعة من الأحداث التاريخية المتسلسلة والغير منسجمة في غالب الأحيان، إذ لا محيد هنا عن دور الصدفة في تطور التاريخ الإنساني. من جهة أخرى، يظل العمل البحثي في مجال التاريخ بمثابة البوابة التي تكشف النقاب عن وجود قوانين نظامية تحكم سيرورة الأحداث في تاريخ البشر.
من هذا المنطلق، سأقوم في هذا العمل بجرد كرونولوجي لتطور المنهج التاريخي منذ ما قبل الميلاد، بدءا بالفترة الإغريقية حيث وُضعت اللبنات الأولى للفكر التاريخي وانتهاء بالحقبة المعاصرة الحالية؛ كما سأسلط الضوء على التطورات التي طرأت على مستويين في الدراسات التاريخية، هما المستوى المعرفي والمستوى المنهجي

Henri Lefebvre and Cornelius Castoriadis’s autogestion: Reinventing the relationship between public space and collective imaginary
Get PDFThe paper focuses on Cornelius Castoriadis and Henri Lefebvre’s approaches and sheds light on imaginary dimension in the politics of self-governance. It shows how tactics of self-governance and the imaginary accompanying them revive all the contradictions between the State reason, on the one hand, and human reason and freedom, on the other hand. Castoriadis, in The Imaginary Institution of Society (L'institution imaginaire de la société), emphasizes the internal relation between what is intended (the development of autonomy) and that through which it is intended (the exercise of this autonomy). He notes that these are two moments of a single process and defines as revolutionary politics “a praxis which takes as its object the organization and orientation of society as they foster the autonomy of all its members and which recognizes that this presupposes a radical transformation of society, which will be possible, in its turn, only through the autonomous activity of individuals.” Particular emphasis is placed on the text entitled “Autogestion et hiérarchie” (1974) that Castoriadis co-authored in 1974. My paper treats the following questions: How might a politics like this exist? On what could it be based and what would its implications be for the tactics of formation of urban design tools? Henri Lefebvre, in “Theoretical Problems of Autogestion” (“Problèmes Théoriques de l'Autogestion”), which was published in Autogestion in 1966, underscores the fact that autogestion introduces and stimulates a contradiction with the State. Autogestion, according to Lefebvre, calls into question the State's functioning as a constraining force erected above society as a whole, capturing and demanding the rationality that is inherent to social relations and practice. At the centre of the paper is the colloquium “Pour un urbanisme . . .” held in Grenoble in April 1974

Get PDFThis course provides a detailed examination of the life and administration of the Roman emperor Augustus (reigned 31 B.C. to A.D. 14), a time of pivotal social and economic change that forever altered the trajectory of Roman history. Augustus and his administration will be examined from a variety of viewpoints, drawing on a rich dataset that includes literature, art, architecture, epigraphy, and ritual practice. The course will seek to understand how the relatively obscure young man who succeeded Julius Caesar aimed to repair and stabilize a society wracked by civil war and, in so doing, redirect the nature of the Roman state and of Roman citizenship. Detailed examination of programs of art, architecture, and urbanism will reveal the part played by material culture in crafting and maintaining an “Augustan program”, while close reading of poetry and prose sources produced with patronage from the emperor will allow a consideration of culture identity as constructed under Augustus. The success of the Augustan program exerted a strong influence on other imperial programs in antiquity, as well as influencing modern and postmodern ideas about leadership, authority, and the state. To that end, the course will conclude by considering the reception of the Augustan program in antiquity and beyond, including the co-option of Augustan themes in the twentieth century
