Examination of humor styles and mental health status of health services students in vocational schools
Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine the humor styles and general mental health of health services students in a vocational school in Turkey.
Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in Turkey in 2013. A total of 354 of health services students from vocational schools agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected from students using a descriptive form, a humor styles questionnaire and a General Health Questionnaire (GHQ 12). Data were analyzed using SPSS 17.0. Descriptive and Pearson tests were used to analyze the study data.
Results: Students' mean ages was 21.01 +/- 2.26, most participants were women (64.5%), of a moderate socio-economic status (61.9%) and non-smokers (63.8%). The students mean scores for the humor sub-scales are as follows: Affiliative humor 39.63 +/- 8.18, self-enhancing humor 33.64 +/- 9,44, aggressive humor 23.29 +/- 7.67 and self-defecting humor 26.51 +/- 7.87. Most of the students' GHQ scores suggested that participants were at risk of having a mental health disorder (20.6%), while 27.1%were found to be at high risk of having a mental health disorder. A low negative significant correlation between the students self-enhancing humor and general health risk was found.
Conclusion: The study found that students have positive humor styles. Nearly half of the student partisans were found to be at a low risk regarding the development of psychiatric disorders
Acoustic Performance Study For The Conference Hall of Ministry of Environment and Urbanizaton Service
Solar air collectors (SAC) are usually used for space heating and drying of agricultural products. In this study, acoustic design analyzes and evaluations were carried out in order to improve acoustical conditions of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization Service Building Conference Hall* for speech function. In the light of the analysis on the room acoustics, recommendations have been developed for the conference hall to provide acoustic comfort conditions in accordance with the regulations in force in our country and international standards. As a result of these suggestions, the acoustic conditions for conference function recommended in national/international legislation have been provided in the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization Service Building
Scoring systems in prediciting mortality rate of patients applying emergency department
Objective: To compare the scoring systems used in intensive care units in terms of predicting the mortality in emergency patients and to determine the most appropriate scoring system for urgent care. Methods: This study was carried out by retrospectively reviewing the files of patients admitted to Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital emergency medicine clinic between October 1, 2010 and October 31, 2010 for non-traumatic reasons and admitted to any service of the hospital. This study calculated automatically with the data obtained from the patients files and records, and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE.), Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS.), Modified Early Warning Score (MEW) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores via internet. Patient files were reviewed and their outcomes (hospitalization, discharge, referral and mortality) were recorded. The obtained data were entered in SPSS 18 and compared with the scores of APACHE., SAPS., MEW and SOFA. Results: Based on area under the curve analysis, APACE. (0.799; 95% CI: 0.746 to 0.845) showed the biggest area under the curve in terms of predicting the patients mortality. However, there was no difference between four scoring system in terms of predicting the mortality. Age (P<0.001, odd's ratio 1.055) pulse (P<0.007, odd's ratio 1.025) and SO2 (P<0.003, odd's ratio 0.952) variables were found to be independent risk factors for mortality. Conclusions: Scores such as APACHE., SAPS., and SOFA, can not be used to make an urgent decision on the first encounter with the patient even though they are successful in predicting mortality. In this case, MEW could be recommended as the most useful system. As a result, the use of scoring systems in emergency departments is useful and necessary. But, multi-centered and large patient group studies are needed
Effect of Body Mass Index on Middle Ear Resonance Frequency
OBJECTIVE: Multifrequency tympanometry (MET) analyzes tympanograms obtained using different probe tones between 226 and 2000 Hz. An important parameter of MET is resonance frequency (RF). Studies have recently demonstrated that the RF value can vary depending on many factors. To provide new data regarding MET, middle ear RF values were investigated with regard to body mass index (BMI).
MATERIALS and METHODS:This study included 78 volunteers (i.e., 156 ears) aged 18-40 years who did not have healing loss and whose otoscopic examinations were normal. Hearing thresholds were measured using pule tone audiometry, and RF values were recorded with immitansmetric measurements. The participants were divided into the following three groups according to their BMI: 25 kg/m(2), Group 3. The RE values were also analyzed.
RESULTS: Although there was no significant difference between Groups 1 and 2 in terms of RF values, a significant difference was observed between Groups 1 and 3 and between Groups 2 and 3.
CONCLUSION: In the light of these data, BMI values should be considered when middle ear RF values are assessed
Endovascular Treatment of a Patient with Moyamoya Disease and Seckel Syndrome: A Case Report
Seckel syndrome and Moyamoya diseases are different entities that rarely associated with each other. Several cases presenting with both these diseases were reported. Intracerebral artery aneurysms and collateral vessels can be seen with Moyamoya. They are commonly treated with medical treatment. We present a 12-years old patient with both Seckel syndrome and Moyamoya disease presented with middle cerebral artery aneurysm which was treated with endovascular modalities
Community based mental health services, in the eye of community mental health professionals
Objectives: This study aims to provide views of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and psychologists who work in community mental health centers (CMHCs) that provide services to individuals, as well as learn how to define their professional roles and responsibilities in these CMHCs.
Methods: This study is designed as a qualitative research to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the views of research professionals. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 11 voluntary participants from eight CMHCs in Ankara. Collected data were subjected to a qualitative analysis.
Results: The opinions of the professional staff are detailed under four headings: stigmatization, perspective of services, problems and suggestions.
Conclusion: CMHC professionals generally are evaluating community-based services in a positive manner. Recommendations include implementing regulations for development of CMHCs that are regionally based with an individual focus and integration
A Novel Computer Vision-Based Advertisement System for Individual Marketing
To improve the performance of marketing efforts, marketers seek new ways of attracting customers. Individual marketing is an efficient way of communicating with individuals. Meeting the individual customers' expectations and needs is becoming increasingly important in modern marketing activities. Marketers have started to concentrate on specific customers' demands. The paradigm shift from the masses to individuals has required changes to firms' marketing strategies. In this paper, a new system called the Personalized Smart Billboard System (PSBS) is introduced, which personalizes promotional messages by developing customer profiles using customers' accessories and some of their facial features. Once any of these clues are detected, related advertisements are shown to the customers. The system was tested with various portrait photos with different visual appearances and promising results were obtained. We anticipate that this system will present a helpful means of establishing more effective communication between businesses and their customers
Phosphorylation switches Bax from promoting to inhibiting apoptosis thereby increasing drug resistance
Akt is a pro-survival kinase frequently activated in human cancers and is associated with more aggressive tumors that resist therapy. Here, we connect Akt pathway activation to reduced sensitivity to chemotherapy via Akt phosphorylation of Bax at residue S184, one of the pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins required for cells to undergo apoptosis. We show that phosphorylation by Akt converts the pro-apoptotic protein Bax into an anti-apoptotic protein. Mechanistically, we show that phosphorylation (i) enables Bax binding to pro-apoptotic BH3 proteins in solution, and (ii) prevents Bax inserting into mitochondria. Together, these alterations promote resistance to apoptotic stimuli by sequestering pro-apoptotic activator BH3 proteins. Bax phosphorylation correlates with cellular resistance to BH3 mimetics in primary ovarian cancer cells. Further, analysis of the TCGA database reveals that 98% of cancer patients with increased BAX levels also have an upregulated Akt pathway, compared to 47% of patients with unchanged or decreased BAX levels. These results suggest that in patients, increased phosphorylated anti-apoptotic Bax promotes resistance of cancer cells to inherent and drug-induced apoptosis
Effect of mometasone furoate nasal spray on the DNA of nasal mucosal cells
Background/aim: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a respiratory disease caused by inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Intranasal corticosteroids (ICs) are an effective treatment for AR; however, their use has been associated with atrophy in nasal mucosae. Because DNA damage has been linked to several chronic diseases, we hypothesize that use of ICs could cause DNA damage in nasal mucosa cells, leading to mucosal atrophy and septal perforation.
Materials and methods: Sixty patients with moderate or severe AR were divided randomly into two groups. Mometasone furoate (MF) and antihistamine tablets (desloratadine) were given to the study (IC) group. Physiologic saline and desloratadine were given to the control ((serum physiologic (SP)) group. Nasal irrigation fluid was taken from patients before study commencement and after 4 weeks of treatment. The comet assay was applied to detect DNA damage in nasal mucosa cells.
Results: Nineteen patients were excluded, leaving a study population of 41 patients (IC group: 17 patients; SP group: 24 patients). Genotoxic damage was evaluated by comet assay.
Conclusion: Treatment with MF spray for 4 weeks does not cause DNA breaks within cells in the nasal mucosa. These results could form the basis of clinical trials involving treatment with different ICs over longer treatment periods
Chronic Subdural Hematoma Associated with Arachnoid Cyst of the Middle Fossa: Surgical Treatment and Mid-Term Results in Fifteen Patients
AIM: To report neurological and radiological features, surgical management, and mid-term outcomes of patients with chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) associated with ipsilateral arachnoid cyst (AC) of the middle fossa.
MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 453 patients with CSDH were treated at our clinic between August 2004 and August 2012. Of these patients, 15 had ipsilateral AC in the middle fossa. A single burr hole craniostomy was performed to drain the hematoma. The AC was left intact in 14 patients, and one patient had no surgical intervention. The follow-up period ranged from 13 to 88 months (mean 43.07 +/- 23.23 months).
RESULTS: The patients with AC associated CSDH were found to be younger than the patients with CSDH alone, and the mean age of 58 patients was 13.15 +/- 13.17 years, while it was 11 +/- 14.22 years in the other patients. Eleven patients had experienced head trauma at 21-50 days before admission. Hematoma evacuation through a single burr hole with closed-system subdural drainage performed at 2-4 days after surgery improved the symptoms in all patients. Two patients developed subdural fluid collection, which was treated by subduroperitoneal shunt placement.
CONCLUSION: Greater prevalence of ACs in patients with CSDHs has been reported in the literature. We recommend the drainage of the hematoma via a single craniostomy and to leave the AC intact as the first choice of treatment if the associated AC is a Galassi type I or II. Additional subduroperitoneal shunting may be performed in patients with Galassi type III cyst
