    Cone Beam Computed Tomography in Orthodontics

    Orthodontists treat malocclusions by applying three-dimensional forces. For years, the diagnosis of this three-dimensional condition and the related treatment plan has been based on two-dimensional imaging. Lateral and anteroposterior cephalometric, panoramic, and periapical radiographs are some of the two-dimensional radiographs routinely used in orthodontics. Despite being highly beneficial in evaluating skeletal and dental relations, these radiographs fail to provide sufficient two-dimensional information in certain cases.     A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE CAPABILITY OF ALTERNATIVE MIXED INTEGER PROGRAMMING FORMULATIONS

    In selecting the best mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation the important issue is to figure out how to evaluate the performance of each candidate formulation in terms of selected criteria. The main objective of this study is to propose a systematic approach to guide the selection of the best MILP formulation among the alternatives according to the needs of the decision maker. For this reason we consider the problem of "selecting the most appropriate MILP formulation for a certain type of decision maker" as a multi-criteria decision making problem and present an integrated AHP-TOPSIS decision making methodology to select the most appropriate formulation. As an example the proposed decision making methodology is implemented on the selection of the MILP formulations of the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). A numerical example is provided for illustrative purposes. As a result, the proposed decision model can be a tool for the decision makers (here they are the scientists, engineers and practitioners) who intend to choose the appropriate mathematical model(s) among the alternatives according to their needs on their studies. The integrated AHP-TOPSIS approach can simply be incorporated into a computer-based decision support system since it has simplicity in both computation and application

    A Content-Based Retrieval Framework for Whole Metagenome Sequencing Samples

    Finding similarities and differences between metagenomic samples within large repositories has been rather a significant issue for researchers. Over the recent years, content-based retrieval has been suggested by various studies from different perspectives. In this study, a content-based retrieval framework for identifying relevant metagenomic samples is developed. The framework consists of feature extraction, selection methods and similarity measures for whole metagenome sequencing samples. Performance of the developed framework was evaluated on given samples. A ground truth was used to evaluate the system performance such that if the system retrieves patients with the same disease, -called positive samples-, they are labeled as relevant samples otherwise irrelevant. The experimental results show that relevant experiments can be detected by using different fingerprinting approaches. We observed that Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) Method is a promising fingerprinting approach for representing metagenomic samples and finding relevance among them.     Effect of different prophylactic polishing procedures on the surface roughness of microhybrid and nanohybrid resin composites

    Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate effects of different professional dental prophylaxis procedures on the surface roughness of a microhybrid (Charisma, Heraeus-Kulzer) and a nanohybrid (Ice, SDI Dental) resin composites. Materials and Methods: 45 disc shaped (2 mm thick /8 mm in diameter) specimens of each restorative materials (totally 90 specimens) were prepared using plexyglass mold. Specimens were polished with medium, fine and ultra-fine Sof-Lex (3M-ESPE) discs and 45 specimens of each composite were randomly divided into five groups (n=9). The first group received no prophylaxis treatment and served as control. The other groups received prophlaxis procedures including Detartrine paste (Septodont) with rotating rubber cup, Gelato paste (Keystone Industries) with rotating rubber cup, pumice-water slurry with rotating rubber cup and pumice-water slurry with rotating brush. After prophlaxis procedures surface roughness values of all specimens were measured using an optical prophylometer (Zygo New View 7200, Ametek). Data was statistically analyzed using Mann Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis Tests at the 0.01 and 0.025 level of significance respectively. Results: The smoothest surfaces were observed in control groups for both resin composites (p < 0.001). Control groups' surface roughness values of resin composites tested were significantly different (p < 0.001). However there were no statistically significant differences between surface roughness values of microhybrid and nanohybrid resin composites that received same prophylaxis treatment. Gelato paste, pumice-water slurry with rotating rubber cup and pumice-water slurry with rotating brush caused significantly rougher surfaces than control group but surface roughness values obtained with Detartrine were not significantly different from the control group in both composites. Conclusions: All prophylaxis procedures tested in the study increased the roughness values of both composites to a level that would be retantive to bacteria. Because of that dental professional must be careful during prophylaxis procedures otherwise repolishing or rarely repair of the composite restoration would be necessary after prophylaxis. © 2018 Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry

    Synthesis and characterization of new thiophenebenzimidazole-based electrochromes

    In the present study, two new donor-acceptor-donor-type molecules were synthesized and the electro-optical properties of the resulting monomers and their corresponding polymers were investigated. Thiophene was selected as the donor unit and cycloheptyl- and cyclooctyl- substituted benzimidazoles were used as the acceptor units. The synthesized monomers and their electrochemically obtained polymers were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectrometry. The optical band gap values of the polymers were 1.62 eV and the polymer films changed color to gray upon oxidation, while they were brick red in their neutral states. Moreover, changing the ring size on the acceptor group from seven carbon to eight carbon did not result in any differences in the electrochemical or optical properties of the resulting polymers. Moreover, the effect of the acceptor unit was also investigated by comparing the polymers in this work with other polymers bearing thiophene and benzimidazole

    Clinical significance of clavicle morphometry

    Purpose: Clavicle is the bony link between upper extremity and the body. This study is undertaken to assess the anatomical structure of clavicle and to determine the morphometric measurements. Materials and Methods: Sixty-six clavicle of unknown gender of an Anatolian population (34 left-32 right) are included. Maximum claviculer length, the perimeter of the midpoint, the superior inferior and anterior posterior thickness of extremitas acromialis, the distance between the lateral border of the clavicle and the midpoint of linea trapezoidea, maximum length and width of impressio costoclavicularis, maximum length and width of fascies sternalis, maximum lengt hand width of facies acromialis and concave angle are measured in addition the Robustness index (endurance index) is calculated. Results: Maximum claviculer length was 136.19 +/- 13.41 mm; superior inferior thickness of extremitas acromialis was 10.59 +/- 2.15 mm; and anterior posterior thickness of extremitas acromialis was 21.62 +/- 3.87 mm; the distance between the lateral border of the clavicle and the midpoint of linea trapezoidea was 17.06 +/- 3.83 mm; maximum length of impressio costoclavicularis was 16.51 +/- 5.11 mm; and maximum width of impressio costoclavicularis was 8.07 +/- 2.88 mm; maximum length of fascies sternalis was 16.58 +/- 3.22 mm; and maximum width of fascies sternalis was 20.26 +/- 3.29 mm maximum length of fascies acromialis was 9.10 +/- 2.55 mm; maximum width of fascies acromialis was 14.74 +/- 3.43 mm; concave angle was 139.43 +/- 8.25 degrees; the perimeter of the midpoint of the clavicle was 3.57 +/- 0.46 mm and the Robustness index (endurance index) was calculated to be 2.63 +/- 0.32. Conclusion: Knowledge on the clavicular measurements may be essential for orthopaedic surgeons in acute displaced midshaft clavicle fractures and to choose a standart treatment modality in many other conditions

    Neuronal regeneration in injured rat spinal cord after human dental pulp derived neural crest stem cell transplantation

    OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of human Dental Pulp-Neural Crest Stem Cells (hDP-NCSCs) delivery on lesion site after spinal cord injury (SCI), and to observe the functional recovery after transplantation. METHODS: Neural Crest Stem Cells (NCSCs) were isolated from human Dental Pulp (hDP). The experimental rat population was divided into four groups (n = 6/24). Their behavioral motility was scored regularly. After 4-weeks, rats were sacrificed, and their spinal cords were examined for Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) labeled hDP-NCSCs by immunofluorescence (IF) staining. RESULTS: In early post-injury (p.i) period, the ultrastructure of spinal cord tissue was preserved in Group 4. The majority of cells forming the ependymal region around the central canal were found to be hDP-NCSCs. While the grey-and-white-matter around the ependymal region was composed of e.g. GFP cells, with astrocytic-like appearance. The scores showed significant motor recovery in hind limb functions in Group 4. However, no obvious change was observed in other groups. C ONCLUSION: Cells e.g., mesenchymal (Vimentin+) which express GFP+ cells in the gray-and-white-matter around the ependymal region could indicate the potential to self-renewal and plasticity. Thus, transplantation of hDP-NCSCs might be an effective strategy to improve functional recovery following spinal cord trauma (Fig. 10, Ref. 32). Text in PDF www.elis.sk

    Association between leptin and weight gain in patients receiving iron treatment

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between leptin and weight gain in patients receiving iron treatment. Materials and Methods: A total of 42 female patients who were diagnosed with IDA were included in the study. Whole blood count, serum iron, serum unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), serum ferritin level were measured at the time of diagnosis and on month one after treatment; serum hepcidin level and serum leptin level were measured at the time of diagnosis and 96 hours after commencement of parenteral therapy; body weight and appetite alterations were recorded at the time of diagnosis and on month one. Results: A statistically significant difference was not found between hepcidin and leptin values at the time of diagnosis and after treatment. Increased appetite was detected in 22 (52.4%) patients on month one after treatment. While mean weight of all patients was 69.6 +/- 17.9 kg at the time of diagnosis, it was 70.7 +/- 17.5 kg on month one after treatment and there was a statistically significant difference between two values. Conclusion: Our study revealed that appetite and body weight increased following iron therapy, consistently with our observations and hypothesis. However no significant relationship was found with leptin levels and weight increase

    Development and validation of a modified quick SOFA scale for risk assessment in sepsis syndrome

    Sepsis is a severe clinical syndrome owing to its high mortality. Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) score has been proposed for the prediction of fatal outcomes in sepsis syndrome in emergency departments. Due to the low predictive performance of the qSOFA score, we propose a modification to the score by adding age. We conducted a multicenter, retrospective cohort study among regional referral centers from various regions of the country. Participants recruited data of patients admitted to emergency departments and obtained a diagnosis of sepsis syndrome. Crude in-hospital mortality was the primary endpoint. A generalized mixed-effects model with random intercepts produced estimates for adverse outcomes. Model-based recursive partitioning demonstrated the effects and thresholds of significant covariates. Scores were internally validated. The H measure compared performances of scores. A total of 580 patients from 22 centers were included for further analysis. Stages of sepsis, age, time to antibiotics, and administration of carbapenem for empirical treatment were entered the final model. Among these, severe sepsis (OR, 4.40; CIs, 2.35-8.21), septic shock (OR, 8.78; CIs, 4.37-17.66), age (OR, 1.03; CIs, 1.02-1.05) and time to antibiotics (OR, 1.05; CIs, 1.01-1.10) were significantly associated with fatal outcomes. A decision tree demonstrated the thresholds for age. We modified the quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (mod-qSOFA) score by adding age (> 50 years old = one point) and compared this to the conventional score. H-measures for qSOFA and mod-qSOFA were found to be 0.11 and 0.14, respectively, whereas AUCs of both scores were 0.64. We propose the use of the modified qSOFA score for early risk assessment among sepsis patients for improved triage and management of this fatal syndrome
