Comparison of stage III mucinous and serous ovarian cancer: a case-control study
Background: The purpose of this case-control study was to compare the prognoses of women with stage III mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) who received maximal or optimal cytoreduction followed by paclitaxel plus carboplatin chemotherapy to those of women with stage III serous epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) treated in the similar manner.
Methods: We performed a multicenter, retrospective review to identify patients with stage III MOC at seven gynecologic oncology departments in Turkey. Eighty-one women with MOC were included. Each case was matched to two women with stage III serous EOC in terms of age, tumor grade, substage of disease, and extent of residual disease. Survival estimates were measured using Kaplan-Meier plots. Variables predictive of outcome were analyzed using Cox regression models.
Results: With a median follow-up of 54months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) for women with stage III MOC was 18.0months (95% CI; 13.8-22.1, SE: 2.13) compared to 29.0 months (95% CI; 24.04-33.95, SE: 2.52) in the serous group (p = 0.19). The 5-year overall survival rate of the MOC group was significantly lower than that of the serous EOC group (44.9% vs. 66.3%, respectively; p < 0.001). For the entire cohort, presence of multiple peritoneal implants (Hazard ratio [HR] 2.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.38-4.14, p = 0.002) and mucinous histology (HR 2.28; 95% CI, 1.53-3.40, p < 0.001) were identified as independent predictors of decreased OS.
Conclusion: Patients with MOC seem to be 2.3 times more likely to die of their tumors when compared to women with serous EOC
Developmental delays and psychiatric diagnoses are elevated in offspring staying in prisons with their mothers
The aim of the study was to describe the sociodemographic and clinical features of the mothers and their offspring staying with them in prison. The study was planned as a cross-sectional, single-center study of mothers residing in Tarsus Closed Women's Prison of Turkish Ministry of Justice along with their 0 to 6 years old offspring. Mothers were evaluated via Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders. A psychologist blind to maternal evaluations applied the Denver Developmental Screening Test II (DII-DST). Children/mothers were also evaluated by a child and adolescent psychiatrist via K-SADS-PL. Twenty-four mothers with a mean age of 29.3 years were included. Most common diagnoses in mothers were nicotine abuse (n = 17, 70.8%), specific phobia (n = 8, 33.3%), alcohol abuse (n = 7, 29.2%) and substance abuse (n = 5, 20.8%). Twenty-six children (53.9% female) were living with their mothers in prison, and the mean age of those was 26.3 months. Results of the D-II-DST were abnormal in 33.3% of the children. Most common diagnoses in children were adjustment disorder (n = 7, 26.9%) separation anxiety disorder (n = 3, 11.5%) and conduct disorder (n = 2, 7.7%). A multi-center study is necessary to reach that neglected/under-served population and address the inter-generational transmission of abuse, neglect, and psychopathology
Creatine Transporter Deficiency in Two Brothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Creatine transporter deficiency (CTD) is a treatable, X-linked, inborn error of metabolism.
Two brothers with autism spectrum disorder were diagnosed with CTD at the ages of 17 and 12 years. Both were found to have a previously reported hemizygous p.408delF (c.1216_1218delTTC) deletion mutation.
Both patients were given creatine monohydrate, L-arginine, L-glycine and S-adenosylmethionine, which partially improved the behavioral problems.
Serum creatinine levels, creatine peak at brain MR spectroscopy or creatine/creatinine ratio in urine should be evaluated to identify CTD in children with autistic behavior and language disorders
Clear Cell Acanthoma in an Unexpected Location
Clear cell acanthoma (CCA) is an uncommon, benign, and slow progressing lesion originating from epidermal keratinocytes. Lesions are not gender specific and usually diagnosed at 50-60 years of age. It is generally represented in the lower extremities. CCA was first described by Degos et al. as "Degos acanthoma" for a lesion presented in the lower extremity. Clinically, it is hard to distinguish whether the lesion is benign or malignant. Final diagnosis can be made histopathologically. Biopsy material is periodic acid-Schiff positive. While CAA commonly presents itself in the lower extremities, our patient had a CAA in his abdominal region
Neonatal Hyperglycemia, which threshold value, diagnostic approach and treatment?: Turkish Neonatal and Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Societies consensus report
Hyperglycemia has become an important risk factor for mortality and morbidity in the neonatal period, especially with increased survival rates of very low birth weight babies. Hyperglycemia in the neonatal period develops as a result of various mechanisms including iatrogenic causes, inability to supress hepatic glucose production, insulin resistance or glucose intolerance, specifically in preterm babies. Initiation of parenteral or enteral feeding in the early period in preterm babies increases insulin production and sensitivity. The plasma glucose is targeted to be kept between 70 and 150 mg/dL in the newborn baby. While a blood glucose value above 150 mg/dL is defined as hyperglycemia, blood glucose values measured with an interval of 4 hours of >180-200 mg/dL and +2 glucosuria require treatment. Although glucose infusion rate is reduced in treatment, use of insulin is recommended, if two blood glucose values measured with an interval of 4 hours are >250 mg/dL and glucosuria is present in two separate urine samples. © 2018 by Turkish Pediatric Association
Proteinuria in preeclampsia: is it important?
Objectives: Our aim is to evaluate the laboratory results arid proteinuria levels of preeclamptic women arid their relationships to maternal and fetal outcomes.
Material and methods: One hundred preeclamptic pregnant women who gave birth in our clinic between 2013 and 2015 were included in our study retrospectively. The data collected from the patients included gestational week, age, gravidity, parity, abortus history, blood pressure, biochemical parameters, delivery method, maternal hospitalization time, cesarean indication, complications, blood products required, plasmapheresis use and dialysis need. The details about the newborns were recorded retrospectively. The relationships between preeclampsia signs and maternal and neonatal outcomes were analyzed. The protein amounts were analyzed via 24-hour collected urine analyses and spot urine analyses.
Results: A statistically significant positive correlation was observed between neonatal intensive care unit needs and proteinuria levels. Fetal growth restriction, respiratory distress syndrome and sepsis were observed as the level of proteinuria increased, but the result was not statistically significant. Eclampsia was observed only in patients with massive proteinuria, and it was statistically significant. An increase in cesarean sections, placental abruptions, antihypertensive drug needs and blood product replacement rates was observed as the amount of proteinuria increased in preeclamptic women, but the results were not statistically significant.
Conclusions: The severity of preeclampsia cannot be determined by the level of proteinuria. However, when massive proteinuria is detected, the clinician should be more cautious about maternal and fetal complications
Evaluation of Prostatic Artery Embolization Efficiency in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Patients with High Comorbidity
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate efficacy outcomes following prostate artery embolization (PAE) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients with high comorbidity.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 22 patients treated with PAE from May 2015 to June 2017. Patients with Charlson comorbidity index >= 2, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) >12, prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels 90 cm(3) were included. Total PSA, maximum flow rate (Q(max)), TPV, IPSS, post-voiding residual (PVR) values were recorded in all patients in the urology clinic before PAE and at 3 and 6 months after PAE.
Results: The average patient age was 73.86 +/- 6.25 years and operative time was 80 minutes (range, 60-120 min). Pre-PAE and 6-month post-PAE values were: IPSS: 25.18 +/- 6.75 an d 11.27 +/- 3.29 (p<0.05), Q(max): 8.31 +/- 3.12 and 17.22 +/- 3.23 (p<0.05), PVR: 87.9 +/- 19.25 and 25.86 +/- 7.72 (p<0.05), TPV: 134.45 +/- 57.56 and 86 +/- 15.4 (p<0.05), and PSA: 3.89 +/- 1.26 and 2.11 +/- 1.06 (p<0.05). Embolization was performed unilaterally due to atherosclerosis and strictures in the internal iliac artery branches in 2 patients. After the procedure, 2 patients experienced transient hematuria which did not require bladder irrigation, 1 patient had acute urinary retention due to dysuria, and 1 patient had transient hematospermia.
Conclusion: PAE may be an alternative treatment method in BPH patients with high comorbidity
An answer to colon cancer treatment by mesenchymal stem cell originated from adipose tissue
Objective(s): Colon cancer is risen up with its complex mechanism that directly impacts on its treatment as well as its common prevalence. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been considered as a therapeutic candidate for conventional disease including cancer. In this research, we have focused on apoptotic effects of adipose tissue-derived MSCs in colon cancer.
Materials and Methods: MSCs were obtained from adipose tissue and characterized by Flowcytometer using suitable antibodies. MSCs, HT-29, HCT-116, RKO and healthy cell line MRC5 were cultured by different seeding procedure. After cell viability assay, changes in caspase 3 enzyme activity and the level of phosphatidylserine were measured.
Results: For cell viability assay, a 48 hr incubation period was chosen to seed all cells together. There was a 1.36-fold decrease in caspase 3 enzyme activity by co-treatment of RKO and MSCs in addition to 2.02-fold decrease in HT-29 and MSCs co-treatment, and 1.103-fold increase in HCT-116 and MSCs. The results demonstrated that HCT-116 led to the highest rate of apoptotic cell death (7.5%) compared with other cells.
Conclusion: We suggest that MSCs might remain a new treatment option for cancer by its differentiation and repair capacity

The gene mutated in NBS, NBS1, has been mapped to the 8q21 chromosome. The product of this gene is a protein with a molecular weight of 95 kDa named nibrin. WEEE estimation and determination of collection points: A case for the Municipality of Cankaya
Electrical-electronic waste (WEEE) is generated from electric and electronic devices at the end of their lifecycles. When WEEEs are disposed, burned or disassembled for recycling, they are transformed into products containing hazardous substances and harm the environment and human health. Therefore WEEEs should be collected, transported and processed properly during their recycling operations by municipality authority in order to minimize their damage and maximize their economic benefit. In this paper, a study is carried out for the WEEE management of Cankaya Municipality by the cooperation of Environmental Conservation and Control Department of Cankaya. For this purpose first WEEE with a focus on television, refrigerator, washing machine, oven and vacuum cleaner are estimated based on the electronic device usage behavior of residents in Cankaya. Secondly, the WEEE collection points' location problem is solved considering set covering problem
