Fatigue strength assessment of welded steel fasteners using structural stress concept with consideration of the mounting pre-load

    Get PDF
The document presents a comprehensive investigation into the fatigue strength assessment of welded fasteners, specifically bolts and nuts, used in various engineering applications. A fatigue strength assessment approach using a structural stress concept is established, accounting for the influence of mounting pre-loads and residual stresses from the welding process. With the developed approach, the fatigue strength of all investigated variants can be assessed with a scatter of 1:2. The experimental investigations showed that an early decrease in pre-load forces negatively affects the fatigue strength. While pre-load forces can enhance fatigue strength, a reduction in pre-load during service loading must be avoided to ensure a safe life

Simulative Investigation of Rubber Damper Elements for Planetary Touch-Down Bearings

    Get PDF
Designing touch-down bearings (TDB) for outer rotor flywheels operated under high vacuum conditions are a challenging task. Due to the big diameters conventional TDB are not suited and a planetary design is applied consisting of a number of small rolling elements distributed around the stator. Since the amplitude of the peak loads during a drop-down lies close to the static load rating of the bearings, it is expected that the service life can be increased by reducing the maximal forces. Therefore, this paper investigates the influence of elastomer rings around the outer rings in the TDB using simulations. For this purpose, the structure and the models used for the contact force calculation in the simulation software ANEAS are presented, especially the modelling of the elastomers. Based on the requirements for a TDB in a flywheel application three different elastomers (FKM, VMQ, EPDM) are selected for the investigation. The results of the simulations show that stiffness and material strongly influence the maximum force. The best results are obtained using the material FKM. Leading to a reduction of the force amplitude in a wide stiffness range

Betriebsoptimierung dezentraler Energiesysteme mittels mathematischer und steuerungstheoretischer Ansätze

    Get PDF

Planetary backup bearings for high speed applications and service life estimation Methodology

    Get PDF
Backup bearings (BB) limit the rotor translational movement during malfunction, overload or power loss in the active magnetic bearings (AMB) in order to enable safe spin down and reduce secondary damage. Especially for high speed applications like flywheels with high rotor inertia, the requirements towards the load capacity and service life of the BB is comparably high. For a special type of flywheel with exceptionally high speeds in the BB interface, a planetary BB system is presented. The planetary BB consists of multiple bearing units placed circumferentially around the stator. Its elastic properties are described as well as a contact damping approach. For cost efficient BB investigation, a scaled test rig is introduced and a parametric study of different delivitations simulations is done. Several quantification methods to evaluate severity, bearing loads and lifetime utilization during BB are presented and applied to the simulations. The applicability of the planetary BB to vertical high speed rotors is confirmed by the simulation data and bearing element selection is affirmed. The results of the quantification methodologies show specific correlation to initial conditions and parameters like unbalance and in particular contact friction coefficient

Activation energy of aluminate dissolution in metakaolin: MLFF-accelerated DFT study of vdW and hydration shell effects

    Get PDF
This research utilizes computational chemistry to investigate the complex mechanisms driving the dissolution of thermally activated metakaolin (MK) clay, a key supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in the manufacturing of concrete and geopolymer-based materials, thereby contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. A thorough exploration of the dissolution process is fundamental for fully understanding its pozzolanic reactivity. Expanding on our recent investigations into SiO₄⁴⁻ dissolution in MK, this work addresses critical data gaps in understanding the dissolution behavior of aluminate species. The findings complement essential input for microscopic forward dissolution rate computations using the atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) upscaling approach. To this end, the study calculates the atomistic activation energy (ΔEa) of aluminate species at the transition state for the hydrolysis reaction using machine learning force fields (MLFF) based on density functional theory (DFT) and the improved dimer method (IDM) under far-from-equilibrium conditions, focusing on three activators: NaOH, KOH, and water. The analysis explores both the presence and absence of van der Waals (vdW) interactions, along with varying geometric configurations of hydration shells surrounding cations (Na⁺, K⁺) and the hydroxide anion (OH⁻). The findings indicate that KOH generally exhibits lower ΔEa than NaOH, especially when vdW interactions are considered. Moreover, the findings emphasize that reduced hydration shells around KOH and NaOH lead to lower ΔEa for the dissolution of aluminate species

Achieving cross‐sectoral policy integration in multilevel structures—Loosely coupled coordination of “energy transition” in the German “Bundesrat”

    Get PDF
The big policy challenges of our times are complex problems cutting across policy sectors and levels of government. To answer the question how cross-sectoral policy coordination in multilevel structures can be achieved, we argue in line with policy integration and multilevel governance scholarship that “loosely coupled” institutions create the interdependency necessary to secure complex coordination. This argument is substantiated empirically by investigating coordination of energy transition in the German Bundesrat. Expectations are derived on how loosely coupled institutions promote coordination. They are tested using a mix of empirical data. It can be shown that loosely coupled institutions indeed enable coordination by linking powers across multiple dimensions, creating incentives for cross-sectoral communication, using personal ties in negotiations to bridge different institutional backgrounds, and sequencing the decision process to allow strategic shifts between coordination dimensions. Those mechanisms may not guarantee the best possible result, but they provide a satisfactory solution at least
