Open holes in composite laminates with finite dimensions: structural assessment by analytical methods
Open circular holes are an important design feature, for instance in bolted joint connections. However, stress concentrations arise whose magnitude depends on the material anisotropy and on the defect size relative to the outer finite plate dimensions. To design both safe and light-weight optimal structures, precise means for the assessment are crucial. These can be based on analytical methods providing efficient computation. For this purpose, the focus of the present paper is to provide a comprehensive stress and failure analysis framework based on analytical methods, which is also suitable for use in industry contexts. The stress field for the orthotropic finite-width open-hole problem under uniform tension is derived using the complex potential method. The results are eventually validated against Finite-Element analyses revealing excellent agreement. Then, a failure analysis to predict brittle crack initiation is conducted by means of the Theory of Critical Distances and Finite Fracture Mechanics. These failure concepts of different modelling complexity are compared to each other and validated against experimental data. The size effect is captured, and in this context, the influence of finite width on the effective failure load reduction is investigated
Sensor-integrated structures in mechanical engineering: challenges and opportunities for mechanical joining processes
In recent years, the trend to extend the functionality of passive metallic structures in mechanical engineering through sensor integration has emerged. This trend is driven by the growing demand for monitoring and/or control approaches. Current state of the art sensory structures and machine elements are successfully produced by integrating sensors into metallic structures using various joining techniques. However, the widespread implementation of sensory structures and machine elements has a long way to go to be achieved. For this purpose, the sensory structures must be produced not only as standardized components, but also cost-effectively with flexible configuration of the sensory characteristics and the integration of associated electronics. This paper provides an overview of the latest joining technologies for sensory structures. A discussion of the features of each joining technique will be given. In view of the importance of force/torque measurement in load-bearing structures and machine elements, an overview will be provided on the advantages and challenges of joining processes that substitute electromechanical transducers with optical non-contact measurement techniques
Improvement of Neurovascular Imaging Using Ultra-High-Resolution Computed Tomography Angiography
Objective: To evaluate diagnostic image quality of ultra-high-resolution computed tomography angiography (UHR-CTA) in neurovascular imaging as compared to normal resolution CT-angiography (NR-CTA).
Material and Methods: In this retrospective single-center study brain and neck CT-angiography was performed using an ultra-high-resolution computed tomography scanner (n = 82) or a normal resolution CT scanner (NR-CTA; n = 73). Ultra-high-resolution images were reconstructed with a 1024 × 1024 matrix and a slice thickness of 0.25 mm, whereas NR-CT images were reconstructed with a 512 × 512 matrix and a slice thickness of 0.5 mm. Three blinded neuroradiologists assessed overall image quality, artifacts, image noise, overall contrast and diagnostic confidence using a 4-point Likert scale. Furthermore, the visualization and delineation of supra-aortic arteries with an emphasis on the visualization of small intracerebral vessels was assessed using a cerebral vascular score, also utilizing a 4-point Likert scale. Quantitative analyses included signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), noise and the steepness of gray value transition. Radiation exposure was determined by comparison of computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol), dose length product (DLP) and mean effective dose. Interrater agreement was evaluated via determining Fleiss-Kappa.
Results: Ultra-high-resolution CT-angiography (UHR-CTA) yielded excellent image quality with superior quantitative (SNR: p < 0.001, CNR: p < 0.001, steepness of gray value transition: p < 0.001) and qualitative results (overall image quality: 4 (Inter quartile range (IQR) = 4–4); p < 0.001, diagnostic confidence: 4 (IQR = 4–4); p < 0.001) compared to NR-CT (overall image quality: 3 (IQR = 3–3), diagnostic confidence: 3 (IQR = 3–4)). Furthermore, UHR-CT enabled significantly superior delineation and visualization of all vascular segments, from proximal extracranial vessels to the smallest peripheral cerebral branches (e.g., UHR-CTA PICA: 4 (3–4) vs. NR-CTA PICA: 3 (2–3); UHR-CTA P4: 4 (IQR = 3–4) vs. NR-CTA P4: 2 (IQR = 2–3); UHR-CTA M4: 4 (IQR = 4–4) vs. NR-CTA M4: 3 (IQR = 2–3); UHR-CTA A4: 4 (IQR = 3–4) vs. NR-CTA A4: 2 (IQR = 2–3); all p < 0.001). Noteworthy, a reduced mean effective dose was observed when applying UHR-CT (NR-CTA: 1.8 ± 0.3 mSv; UHR-CTA: 1.5 ± 0.5 mSv; p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Ultra-high-resolution CT-angiography improves image quality in neurovascular imaging allowing the depiction and evaluation of small peripheral cerebral arteries. It may thus improve the detection of pathologies in small cerebrovascular lesions and the resulting diagnosis
EXPRESSIONS OF OPINION PRODUCED BY FRENCH LEARNERS OF GERMAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE. An Exploratory Corpus Analysis (L1 – L2)
The present study represents a corpus-based analysis of expressions of opinion (EoO) in German, which are based on multi-word combinations of varying degrees of fixity and are defined pragmatically as text-pattern-related acts of expressing one’s opinion. The analysis is centred on the formal and functional characteristics of a number of selected EoO occurring in written productions of French students, in comparison to productions by German native speakers. Following a presentation of the method based on construction-grammatical, frame-semantic, discourse- and text-linguistic premises, a series of results emerging from the corpus-based analysis are discussed. The specially compiled learner corpus of written productions by French learners of German and the native-language comparison corpus were empirically and qualitatively analysed using Sketch Engine The results confirm the hypothesis that German L2-constructions of expressing one’s opinion are fundamentally different from L1-constructions. The exploratory analysis and the associated approach require broader studies in order to deepen the theoretical and pedagogical-didactic findings
Rezension: Döll, Marion & Michalak, Magdalena (Hrsg.) (2023): Deutsch als Zweitsprache und inklusive Bildung [Deutsch als Zweitsprache. Positionen, Perspektiven, Potenziale, Bd. 3]. Münster: Waxmann. ISBN: 987-3-8309-4711-0. 139 Seiten, 29,90 €.

Minding the English trap: A crosslinguistic pedagogical approach to teaching the V2 rule to young German L3 learners in Sweden
Based on a case study with four teachers of German L3 at Swedish lower secondary schools, this article explores: a) the teachers’ pedagogical views on the role of English L2 in L3 teaching, and b) how they make explicit crosslinguistic references to English when teaching German. The analyzed interviews, observations and lesson plans suggest that the participants have positive views on crosslinguistic pedagogy and that they also apply it in their practice, for example by making trilingual comparisons of word order when highlighting the V2 rule. Based on the findings, it is suggested that English can function as a bridging language between Swedish L1 and German L3
Variational Inference for Continuous-Time Switching Dynamical Systems
Switching dynamical systems provide a powerful, interpretable modeling framework for inference in time-series data in, e.g., the natural sciences or engineering applications. Since many areas, such as biology or discrete-event systems, are naturally described in continuous time, we present a model based on a Markov jump process modulating a subordinated diffusion process. We provide the exact evolution equations for the prior and posterior marginal densities, the direct solutions of which are however computationally intractable. Therefore, we develop a new continuous-time variational inference algorithm, combining a Gaussian process approximation on the diffusion level with posterior inference for Markov jump processes. By minimizing the path-wise Kullback-Leibler divergence we obtain (i) Bayesian latent state estimates for arbitrary points on the real axis and (ii) point estimates of unknown system parameters, utilizing variational expectation maximization. We extensively evaluate our algorithm under the model assumption and for real-world examples
Accuracy Evaluation of 3D Pose Reconstruction Algorithms Through Stereo Camera Information Fusion for Physical Exercises with MediaPipe Pose
In recent years, significant research has been conducted on video-based human pose estimation (HPE). While monocular two-dimensional (2D) HPE has been shown to achieve high performance, monocular three-dimensional (3D) HPE poses a more challenging problem. However, since human motion happens in a 3D space, 3D HPE offers a more accurate representation of the human, granting increased usability for complex tasks like analysis of physical exercise. We propose a method based on MediaPipe Pose, 2D HPE on stereo cameras and a fusion algorithm without prior stereo calibration to reconstruct 3D poses, combining the advantages of high accuracy in 2D HPE with the increased usability of 3D coordinates. We evaluate this method on a self-recorded database focused on physical exercise to research what accuracy can be achieved and whether this accuracy is sufficient to recognize errors in exercise performance. We find that our method achieves significantly improved performance compared to monocular 3D HPE (median RMSE of 30.1 compared to 56.3, p-value below 10−6) and can show that the performance is sufficient for error recognition
