Consultation Reflections

This paper was originally written for COMM 280 – Theorizing Communication, taught 
by Dr. Kurtz. Before coming to Denison, my relationship with writing was quite rigid, as I had 
only been trained in academic IELTS writing, which focused heavily on structure and formal 
tone. Because of that, I used to stick to a very narrow way of writing; but since being at Denison, 
my writing has evolved to be more analytical, thoughtful, and nuanced, especially in academic 
contexts. For this paper, I wrote an argumentative response to Jonathan Haidt’s article in The 
Atlantic, in which I argued against his view that social media is the main reason behind Gen Z’s 
mental health struggles. I did extensive research, finding mental health reports and blog posts 
that supported my claim that the issue is more complex and involves multiple contributing 
factors. During my Writing Center consultation, I was very impressed by the professionalism and 
collaborative approach of the editor. Rather than telling me what to fix, he guided me through 
each paragraph, pointing out areas where I could elaborate, clarify, or reorganize my ideas for 
better flow. He also helped me improve my word choice, strengthen my citations, and consider 
breaking up complex paragraphs.The process of revision is less about correcting mistakes and 
more about refining my argument and making my ideas more accessible to readers. The session 
not only improved this paper but also gave me tools and confidence to approach future writing 
projects with a clearer and more open mindset.

Nhat’s paper stood out to me for its succinct and effective argumentation. It engaged well 
with its sources to construct a cohesive line of thinking. After summarizing a psychologist’s 
argument for the dangers of a phone-based childhood, Nhat identifies “oversimplification” as an 
area for concern, which I found compelling from the beginning. Nhat then goes on to explain the 
possible strengths of online connection for children, an area the original article did not seem to 
address. “Beyond the Screen” is a more comprehensive response to a serious problem, and resists 
a common narrative that smartphones are inherently problematic. Instead, Nhat’s argument 
advocates for more media literacy education and responsible design reforms.  
The consultation with Nhat was a great experience. We began by discussing the context 
of the assignment: information like the prompt and intended audience. After this, we delved 
deeper into the content and structure. I remember asking about some of the transitions in order to 
clarify some of those trickier spots when the argument moved from one point to another. 
Throughout the consultation, I could tell that Nhat was extremely familiar with both the topic 
and her argument. Whenever I asked clarifying questions, she always knew the answer. 
Whenever I asked about her intentions for a particular paragraph, she was always able to 
articulate the idea behind her choices. Her expertise and grasp of her argument allowed me to 
provide several suggestions about structure. Most of my suggestions pertained to the transitions 
and the cohesion of ideas within paragraphs. Overall, “Beyond the Screen” is an exemplary 
argumentative essay that extends beyond critique and into solutions. I loved following it through 
the nuanced ideas it presented.

Articulāte is a student-authored and student-edited journal 
sponsored by the English Department. The editors of Articulāte are 
looking for submissions that demonstrate original thinking and 
strong scholarly research in their analysis of literary and/or cultural 
texts. Essays should not exceed fifteen typed, double-spaced pages. 
However, longer essays of exceptional quality may still be 
considered. Please use MLA citations.  
Submissions for the 2024-2025 academic year should be emailed 
to articulate@denison.edu. Please submit the essay and a cover 
sheet as two separate PDF files. Remove your real name from the 
essay and put a pseudonym on each page of the essay. In the file 
name for your submitted essay, put your pseudonym followed by 
the word  
“articulāte.” In the file name for the cover sheet, include your real 
name and the word “articulāte.” The cover sheet should include 
your real name, your pseudonym, the title of your essay, the 
anticipated year of your graduation, and your email address. 
Writers must be Denison students at the time of submission, and by 
submitting their essays, they are agreeing to have them published 
on the University database of student journals if they are accepted 
for publication. The journal accepts submissions at any time during 
the academic year, although we generally issue a call for papers at 
the beginning of the spring semester and make final decisions in

Letter from the Editors 
 
 Dear Readers, 
 
Fall, like Spring before it, is a season of transitions. Poet Adrian Matejka wrote in his Editor’s 
note for the May 2024 edition of Poetry Magazine: “We all wait as our shoots push through the soil 
with the promise of renewal and growth.” While an apt metaphor for a world coming out of 
hibernation, this observation inspired the Editors-In-Chief at Exile to think about the idea of patience, 
but also of shifts and promises. While the natural winds down and the world shifts beneath our feet, 
we hope that the culture of writing on this campus provides us all with a space of processing, of 
development, and of hope for a better tomorrow. 
 
We were amazed with the large influx of artwork submissions we received this semester and are 
beyond excited to reflect this shift in the magazine. This edition features powerful photography from 
Tenzin Kunga, which captures the vibrant life and spirit of Buddhist Monks during her travels to 
Tibet. Addie Krohn’s ceramics are at once whimsical and enigmatic, and despite their shape feel 
decidedly human. Maya Stauffer’s pieces play with color and eye-line in three distinct ways, but her 
piece “Strength” in particular is as hypnotic as it is powerful. Alex Murray’s zine “Gender Studies 
Scholars Want to Know” tackles the incredibly complex and emotionally taxing concept of gender 
dysphoria in an original way, borrowing the eclectic style of collage art while embracing humor. 
 
 Elizabeth Koeppen amazed us with her “Sestina for Salt Lake Civility,” a notoriously rare and 
tricky form which she handles with inspiring elegance and vulnerability. “Doe a Deer,” short fiction by 
Tyler Thompson, conveyed a tenderness of character and a subversion of subject matter with sharp, 
immersive description. “All I Have/All I Am” by Lila Burke is an open and honest acknowledgement of 
an ever-changing relationship to the body and to the self. Skye Foley’s “Šapat naše domovine (the 
whisper of our homeland)” creates a portal to Croatia painted in longing and rendered in vivid verse. 
 
We want our magazine to constantly shift and change to include more opportunities for 
expansive types of pieces and a diverse quality of voices. We want to make these little promises so in the 
seasons to come, bigger promises can grow. To that end, we hope you enjoy the incredible art and 
writing in this Fall edition of Exile.

Contributors 
 
Robin Adams (any) is a sophomore music composition and computer science double major. They are 
involved with a number of music and theater groups on campus, including DITA, DUwop, the Vail 
Series, and Singer’s Theatre. He is passionate about songwriting and audio production in general. She 
is president of the Denison Songwriting Club this year, and says it has been a lot of fun! 
 
Kate Blue (she/her) is a sophomore double major in creative writing and cinema. She is passionate 
about writing, filmmaking, music, and her work at the Writing Center. She spends her free time at 
Curtis Dining Hall, excessively decorating her walls, and watching the X-Men movies on repeat. 
 
Han Bui (she/they) is a senior financial economics major. She is an international student from 
Vietnam. Their hobbies include drawing and painting things that they like. Although she is very 
familiar with digital art, she hasn’t done traditional pieces for a long time and is dabbling in them 
again. They feel most inspired by pre-modern Asian art.  
 
Lila Burke (she/her) is a junior anthropology major with a Spanish minor and queer studies 
concentration. She is the education director and co-treasurer for SHARE. She also works for the Civil 
Rights & Title IX Office as a Civil Rights Ambassador. 
 
Talya Dersu (she/her) is a junior cinema and journalism double major. She works at the Vail Series as a 
Production Intern.  
 
Mia Fischel (she/her) is a junior journalism major with minors in classics and ancient Greek. She 
enjoys taking photos of her adventures with friends and experimenting with fashion in the lighting 
studio. On campus, she works with The Reporting Project, as a teaching assistant for Photography, 
and as a tutor for Ancient Greek. In her free time, she likes to read, hammock, hike, play ultimate 
frisbee, and eat chocolate.  
 
Skye Foley (she/her) is a sophomore journalism major with an educational studies minor. She is 
primarily involved with the Denison Community Service Association and the Denison Outdoors 
Club. She loves reading, particularly 19th century British literature, along with creative writing, 
drawing, and spending time in nature. Her work is inspired in large part by the stories of her family.  
 
Moose Hogeland (he/they) is a junior biology major. His inspiration came from a song called “Fish in 
a Birdcage” by the band of the same name, and his trans and queer experience growing up in a

conservative Christian community. They’ve always loved animals, which have always found a way into 
their work. Moose grew up in Chesapeake Bay,  an area that the Great Blue Heron is native to, so he 
thought it was the perfect subject. Moose created this piece using multiple techniques and processes of 
etching and took the course of an entire semester to create.  
 
Alex Murray (he/him) is a senior English literature major. He is a zine maker and has shown his work 
at zine fairs across the Midwest. His primary visual medium is collage. Besides visual art he is passionate 
about writing and has forthcoming narrative nonfiction projects. 
 
Elizabeth Koeppen (she/her) is a sophomore studying creative writing. This is her second time being 
published in Exile. She is also involved in Revival Thrift and an intern at Story Magazine. Elizabeth is 
greatly inspired by her family and music. In her free time, you can catch her at a concert or trying to get 
through her to-be-read shelf.  
 
Addie Krohn (she/her) is a freshman studying visual arts. She started working with ceramics in high 
school and is excited to continue it at Denison. She has joined a few art groups and the revival thrift 
club. She has also recently gotten into sewing and upcycling! 
 
Tenzin Kunga (she/her) is a senior psychology major with an English literature minor. She is the 
president of the Mindfulness Club, a Hoaglin Student Wellness Ambassador, Student Assistant 
Director for the Writing Center, and Psi Chi Midwest Social Media Officer. Her work often explores 
cultural diversity and mental wellness. Her photography captures the devotion and resilience of 
Buddhist communities, inspired by her travels and heritage.  
 
Eli Lishack (he/him) is a junior anthropology and music performance double major. He’s a guy who 
likes to do a lot of different things. At Denison he is in three music ensembles, takes three different 
private music lessons, works for the museum, and plays in the band Doghouse. Outside of these things 
he loves taking photos (mostly on film) and going bowling. Creative mediums connect me to where I 
am and the people around me—permanent records of feeling and events. 
 
Maggie Malin (she/her) is a senior creative writing major and an American Roots music minor. She is 
currently working on her senior project, a murder mystery novel about a record label as told through a 
series of interviews. She is involved with Sketch’rs, Doobie Radio, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. She plays 
mandolin and sings with the DU American Roots Ensemble. She believes in love and wishes she 
discovered creative nonfiction earlier.

Emily McNeal (she/her) is a sophomore biology major with a creative writing minor. She is a teacher 
for the fiber arts club and a prose editor for Exile. Her greatest inspiration is Mary Oliver and her focus 
on observing the world around us.  
 
Monica Olver (she/her) is a junior visual arts major. She is a part of Kappa Alpha Theta, an executive 
officer for Denison University Art Collective, and club field hockey. As an emerging artist from 
Columbus, Ohio, she draws inspiration from her childhood experiences, infusing her work with 
nostalgia, playfulness, and a hint of unsettling fear. Her illustrations reflect the emotional contrast 
between comforting and painful memories, allowing her to connect with viewers through shared 
experiences of hardship and whimsicality, channeling her inner child.  
 
Julia Pandaleon (she/her) is a sophomore psychology major with a neuroscience concentration. At 
Denison, she is primarily involved with DASU, Ballet Club, and Questbridge. On top of helping create 
social media posts for these organizations, she works in the scene shop at Eisner as a painter. These 
opportunities allow her to express her creativity and refine her skills as an artist where she would 
otherwise lack the time. She particularly loves making pieces involving nature and animals in a loose 
style to express life and movement, as seen in her pieces! 
 
Manan Sarupria (he/him) is a senior majoring in communications and minoring in studio art. He 
created “The Essence of the Enigmatic” to convey the idea that only when we live through the chaos do 
we realize that there is so much more beyond reality we need to drift out of. 
 
Maya Stauffer (she/her) is a freshman music and environmental studies double major. She plays the 
violin and is very involved in the music department, whether orchestra, choir, or chamber ensemble. 
She loves to create art and has been since she was little. She is in the art club and fiber arts club. 
 
Charlie Stocker (he/him) is a sophomore creative writing major with a Spanish minor. His dad is his 
biggest inspiration, but that is not to discredit others like Stephen King, Robert Service, Tyler 
Okonma, Kobe Bryant, and many more as major influences on the way he lives. Every Song Ends will 
be the first of his writing to be shared with anyone besides professors and close friends. He is very 
excited.  
 
Tyler Thompson (he/him) is a sophomore majoring in journalism and minoring in creative writing. 
He is an active manager at the Bandersnatch, a student run-business at Denison, and a published 
journalist in the Reporting Project and the Denisonian. Tyler can most likely be found reading a 
Stephen King novel or watching the newest A24 movie.

Violet Tuttle (she/her) is a freshman studying psychology with a neuroscience concentration. She is 
from Hudson, Ohio. Violet won awards through the Scholastic Art and Writing show, as well as the 
Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibit in both 2023 and 2024. Though she is not studying studio art at 
Denison, the arts have always been a passion of hers. Violet continues to create pieces in her free time
