Consultation Reflections 
 
Eva Altizer                   Writer 
I wrote this paper for an essay assignment in Human Origins and Prehistory, taught by  
Dr. John Soderberg. This paper was prompted to compare and contrast the viewpoints of  
anthropologists Sarah Blaffer Hrdy and Richard Wrangham, and to understand why their theories  
on Homo erectus are so different despite both anthropologists using similar evidence. Before  
coming to Denison, I was confident in my ability to write essays but was somewhat uncertain of  
how to translate my work into writing effective academic scholarship. I appreciate my assigned  
editor for taking the time to thoroughly read and consider my work and ways to improve it. This  
writing process included working on section transitions and breaking up my structure into  
smaller parts. I believe it has improved my work. My consultant helped me to see my paper as  
more of a cohesive whole than it had been before. This writing process was enjoyable, and I look  
forward to further improving my writing during my time at Denison.

Eva and I began each of our consultations together by creating an outline for our meeting 
to prioritize what we needed to work on. At first, we focused on restructuring her paper into a 
more logical form. After reorganizing it, we created transition phrases to better suit the new 
outline of Eva’s paper. My favorite part of the consultation was prior to giving my insight, I 
would ask Eva for her own and they were usually closely aligned. However, we experienced 
difficulty with the deletion of some points that may have been irrelevant without Eva’s 
professors’ given prompt. Giving Eva the power to choose how she wanted the consultation to go 
and what to prioritize closely aligns with the Writing Center's values of creating and enhancing 
free thinkers.

Meet the Writers 
Nhat Linh Dang is a Double major in Communication and International Studies. She is 
enthusiastic about academic communication papers and personal reflections. She enjoys 
developing critical thinking by writing argumentative essays. 
 
Writing Advice: To write is to paint one’s soul onto the paper. Even in its most neutral 
form, writing carries one’s quiet imprint and personality. 
 
Cameryn Polk is a communication major on the pre-law track. She enjoys thinking outside 
the box with all of her academic papers, crafting uncanny topic sentences that amuse both her 
and the reader.  
 
Writing Advice: No matter how mundane the topic of a paper may be, with your own 
creativity, you can take control of the narrative and make the paper your own. But, also 
write coherently and make sure to get to the point so your paper is easy to follow.  
 
Hayley Shay is a Politics and Public Affairs major on the pre-law track. She finds research 
and idea formation to be the most fulfilling part of the writing process 
 
Writing Advice: Only the thesis has to present a unique perspective, whereas the 
integration of other academics' analyses is necessary and indeed more valuable than 
relying solely on one's own critical voice. 
 
Grace Lee is a Global Commerce major and Music performance minor. I’m passionate about 
social issues, storytelling, and community-driven projects that bridge cultures and perspectives. 
 
Writing Advice: Start easy and give yourself time to revise—your first draft doesn’t 
have to be perfect. 
 
 
Eva Altizer is an Undecided major who is considering studying both creative writing and 
journalism. She loves that heart-racing moment when she discovers a fascinating intervention to 
write about in a paper. 
 
Writing Advice: Don't be afraid to use your own voice in academic writing, even with 
research. The goal is to have a conversation with another person in academic writing, 
not to just report facts like a robot!

Meet the Consultants 
 
Tenzin Kunga `25 is a Psychology major and an English Literature minor. She is finishing her 
second year as a consultant this semester. Tenzin believes that in the WC, there's a sense of 
collaboration and mutual growth that feels like nothing else. For her, it’s always rewarding to see 
those "lightbulb" moments when her writers get it, and something clicks. 
 
Mary Hodgkins `27 is a Politics & Public Affairs major with a Creative Writing minor. This 
is her second semester at the Writing Center. Mary loves the community that forms in and around 
the Writing Center, and is grateful to get to meet many new people on campus through her work. 
It’s always a treat to get to work with and learn from students during consultations. 
 
Emma Dorobiala `27 is a Psychology major and Neuroscience and Legal Studies 
Concentration. She is finishing her second year as a consultant this semester. Emma believes that 
the Writing Center is a place for collaborative learning. For her, it’s always rewarding to have a 
newcomer become a regular at the center because it shows her she has helped them a great deal.
