Advances in probabilistic text mining techniques for structured text analysis in the automotive domain and beyond
Text data have become central in both the sciences and economics, turning text mining into a key tool for empirical research. Increasingly, scholars investigate how textual information can enrich quantitative analysis. Economic outcomes in particular often depend on unstructured language: central bank statements guide market expectations, news sentiment moves asset prices, customer feedback shapes consumer perceptions, and parliamentary debates provide measures of political polarization. The main challenge is to turn complex language into simpler, interpretable forms that allow large-scale statistical analysis. Probabilistic models, like topic models, address this by offering structured, likelihood-based descriptions of hidden patterns. This dissertation introduces and applies three methods that further develop probabilistic topic models. The work proceeds through three papers. Paper I proposes Structural Text-Based Scaling (STBS), a hierarchical Poisson factorization model that introduces topic-specific latent positions (e.g., ideological locations) for authors and regresses these positions on observed covariates under shrinkage assumptions. STBS separates topical prevalence from framing and yields sparse, interpretable relationships between autor characteristics and latent positions. Paper II introduces Seeded Poisson Factorization (SPF), which integrates small, expert-curated seed dictionaries into the generative process of Poisson factorization. This semi-supervision anchors topics to domain taxonomies while allowing non-seed vocabulary to be learned from data, thereby balancing guidance and discovery in the absence of document-level labels. Paper III presents Covariate-informed Seeded Poisson Factorization (CSPF), which complements the seeded topic creating of the SPF model with the assessment of covariate effects on document–topic intensities via a regression model including a positive link function. The empirical studies conducted in this dissertation demonstrate the practical value of the framework across domains. In political speech, STBS recovers topic-varying polarization linked to speaker attributes. In customer-feedback corpora, SPF yields domain-aligned topics at scale. In a large automotive corpus, CSPF reveals systematic reallocations of topical attention across covariate dimensions. Together, these studies advance the state-of-the-art in probabilistic topic modeling by providing principled foundations for interpretable, metadata-aware topic modeling at the scale required by modern corpora.submitted by Bernd Prostmaier, M.Sc., B.A.Literaturverzeichnis: Seite 77-88Dissertation University of Salzburg 2025Abstract in englischer und deutscher Sprache, Danksagung in deutscher Sprach

Applied Sciences / The AI of Oz: A Conceptual Framework for Democratizing Generative AI in Live-Prototyping User Studies
Commonly used methods in User-Centered Design (UCD) can face challenges inincorporating user feedback during early design stages, often resulting in extended iterationcycles. To address this, we explore the following question: “How can generative artificialintelligence (AI) be utilized to enable prototyping within user studies to facilitate immediateuser feedback integration and validation?” We introduce a conceptual framework for live-prototyping, where designers modify AI-generated components of a prototype in realtime through a separate control interface during user testing. This approach invites moreimmediate interaction between feedback and design decisions. To explore our concept, weengaged in a case study with experienced prototyping practitioners, examining how real-time prototyping might shape design processes. Participants highlighted the framework’spotential to support spontaneous insight generation and enhance collaborative dynamics. However, they also highlighted important considerations, including the need for a certainlevel of AI knowledge and challenges around planning and reliability. By integratinggenerative AI into the UCD process, our conceptual framework contributes to ongoingconversations around evolving user-centered methodologies

More than a workout: exploring the potentials of fitness technology for empowering women through physical activity
Exercise has been shown to contribute to women’s empowerment. At the same time, fitnesstechnology has become an important part of contemporary leisure exercising practices, yet itsrole in supporting women’s empowerment remains underexplored. This thesis explores how fitnesstechnology can be designed to support women’s empowerment through exercising. Drawingon women’s health research and empowerment theory, this study adopts a qualitative approachto understand the lived experiences and personal perspectives on empowerment throughexercise and the role of technology. The research was conducted in two phases: first, an autoethnographicstudy provided detailed, reflective insights into my personal fitness training experiences, while the second phase broadened this perspective by incorporating diverse women’sperceptions of their empowerment through exercise and relevant technology in a journaling andinterview study. The findings indicate that exercise fosters empowerment by demonstrating capabilities, supporting motivation, perseverance and self-discovery, while highlighting exerciseas a personal decision for self-care. Based on these empirical findings, this thesis presents designimplications for fitness technology that emphasize self-focus and self-determination, bodilyand health knowledge, as well as inspiration. The findings suggest that technology shouldensure that motivation is rooted in personal growth and well-being. Technology can help counteractingsome gendered societal limitations by providing additional safety and flexibility forwomen, while a focus on the self and personal well-being makes some gendered comparisonsless relevant.author: Theresa Katharina StürmerEnthält Literaturverzeichnis auf Seite 57-65Masterarbeit Universität Salzburg, Joint Master Programme on Human-Computer Interaction 2025Masterarbeit Salzburg University of Applied Sciences 202

AGIT Conference / GIS-based Analysis of Walloon Building Inventory for Construction and Demolition Waste
This study presents a novel framework designed to create a building inventory for estimating construction and demolition waste at a regional scale. Addressing the challenges posed by insufficient demolition statistics and incomplete high-resolution building data, the approach integrates various Geographical Information System (GIS) data. Meanwhile, we propose conducting a buffer and jointness analysis and a sampling survey to verify the building types and discuss possible reasons for the gaps in the building data. Based on the spatial join analysis, the study demonstrates the potential of utilizing the built inventory to detect the demolished buildings
