    No full text
Evidence for the War Crime Commission".

    No full text

Frontiers in Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology / When Neoliberals Become Activists: Social Crisis Threats Motivate Ingroup and Outgroup Prosociality among Neoliberals

    No full text
Introduction: People who support neoliberal beliefs (i.e., who believe inindividual responsibility and meritocracy) are less motivated to collectively actagainst social inequality or help those in need. At the same time, economic andhumanitarian crises put a spotlight on injustice and harm. They represent anexistential threat to people and should thus motivate prosocial behavior in linewith salient humanitarian values. Methods: We conducted two experimental studies. Study 1 (N = 175) madean economic crisis salient. Study 2 (N = 205), conducted four weeks after theoutbreak of the Ukrainian war, made the associated humanitarian crisis salient. Results: We found raising people’s awareness of a social crisis (compared to anon-threatening control condition) increased prosociality and solidarity-basedcollective action, even when this conflicted with participants’ neoliberal beliefs. In Study 1, a salient economic threat (compared to prosperity) buffered thenegative effect of neoliberalism on prosociality and system change. In Study2, the salient (vs. not salient) consequences of the Ukrainian war, increasedsolidarity with Ukrainian refugees, thereby overruling the negative effects ofneoliberalism. Mediational analysis suggested that the threat effects on solidaritywith Ukrainians were due to increased outgroup identification following threat. Inboth studies, the effects of neoliberalismwere independent of related constructs, such as political conservatism or social dominance orientation.Discussion: The results show that social crisis threats can make neoliberalistsmore flexible in applying their ideological beliefs. The findings are discussed inthe context of group-based processes in response to threats

    No full text

Craving in association with emotional tension and the role of the menstrual cycle

    No full text
Emotional eating can be a precursor of disordered eating such as binge eating. Binge eating involves consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time potentially leading to overweight and several other health risks. Studies show mixed results regarding the influence of positive and negative emotions on food intake and craving. Besides valence, other aspects of emotions have been investigated too. For example, a negative correlation has been found between relaxation and craving. Since low relaxation typically indicates emotional tension, this raises the question of whether specific components of emotions, like tension, might be crucial for understanding the emotion-eating relation. The complex relationship further appears to be influenced by individual factors and investigating these can inform treatment of eating disorders. In women, the menstrual cycle has been discussed as one of these factors. For instance, emotional eating questionnaire scores peak in the mid-luteal phase. Thus, we expected an effect of tension and cycle phase as well as an interactional effect of both predictors on craving. We hypothesised more craving and a stronger tension - craving association during luteal phase compared to follicle phase. We used Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to assess tension as well as craving and other variables over four weeks. Before and after those four weeks participants completed pre- and post-questionnaires including the assessment of two menstrual cycle starts before and the one during or after the time of their study participation. We then analysed the effect of tension and cycle phase, as well as their interaction, on craving using linear mixed effect models. We found no significant effect of tension, and no significant effects of cycle phase or the interaction effect. The discussion addresses how those results can be placed in the context of past research, focusing especially on interindividual differences in emotional eating and varying responses to menstrual cycle related hormonal fluctuations.eingereicht von: Sophie BurgerEnthält Literaturverzeichnis auf Seite 40-49Masterarbeit Paris-Lodron-Universität Salzburg 2025Arbeit nur im CAMPUSNETZWERK der Universität Salzburg abrufba

The silent sacrifice : a critical examination of human rights compliance in EU external migration agreements

    No full text
This thesis examines the compliance of the European Union’s external migration agreements with international human rights law, with a particular focus on the principle of non-refoulement. In light of transformations within the European political landscape and evolving models of migration governance, the thesis explores how the EU’s recourse to flexible yet opaque agreements reflects a broader institutional shift - one that increasingly prioritizes border control and return over coherence with its human rights commitments. Employing doctrinal legal analysis, case law from international courts and the European Union, and targeted case studies, the research explores how these agreements function within complex and often opaque policy landscapes. It finds that many such instruments circumvent formal legal obligations and institutional accountability, enabling practices that put individuals at risk of refoulement and other risks. These impacts are particularly pronounced for individuals affected by intersecting forms of structural discrimination, such as those shaped by gender, race, and precarious legal status, highlighting how existing power hierarchies are reproduced through EU external migration practices. The thesis argues that the externalization of migration control undermines the EU’s foundational legal commitments and raises pressing questions about its identity as a normative power. By navigating between internal legal obligations and external political pressures, the EU often sacrifices legal coherence for short-term strategic gains. The thesis concludes by calling for structural reforms to EU migration governance, emphasizing the need for binding legal safeguards, independent oversight mechanisms, and a renewed commitment to centering human rights in all external cooperation frameworks.eingereicht von Diren Helin HerlbauerLiteraturverzeichnis: Seite 82-88Masterarbeit Universität Salzburg 202

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation in powerlifters : a pilot study on psychological, sleep and performance outcomes

    No full text
Objective. The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on psychological, sleep and performance outcomes in powerlifters. Previous research has primarily focused on taVNS in clinical or healthy samples and showed improvements in psychological functioning, recovery and sleep. Methods. Over the course of four weeks, participants self-administered taVNS five times a week for 30 minutes after strength training or before bedtime. Measurements were taken at three time points: before the intervention phase (pre), immediately after the four-week intervention period (post) and one month after the post-assessment (follow-up). Pre, post and follow-up measurements included various subjective psychological domains (recovery, stress, perceived stress, affect, memory, attention, anxiety and well-being), objective sleep domains (nocturnal HRV, sleep score, sleep duration and subjective sleep quality) and submaximal strength performance outcomes in squat, bench press and deadlift. The small sample size required non-parametric testing and a further responder analysis was conducted to explore individual differences in outcome-specific responses. Results. Results showed significant findings in positive affect and attention, both revealing large effect sizes, while the remaining psychological domains and sleep outcomes did not show meaningful changes. In performance, no distinct beneficial effect of taVNS was observed. The responder analysis demonstrated mixed patterns of change for most outcomes but underscored the significant findings. Conclusions. The current study is the first to implement a four-week taVNS intervention in strength training and to demonstrate differences in domain-specific responsiveness to taVNS in athletes for positive affect and attention. These findings offer important insights into the feasibility and practical application of taVNS in sports settings. Further studies are advised to include a larger sample size and apply a longer intervention period, as athletes may benefit from a longer stimulation phase.eingereicht von Simone Staffel, BScLiteraturverzeichnis: Seite vi-xiiiMasterarbeit Paris-Lodron-Universität Salzburg 202

Frontiers in Sociology / The Time of Recognition. A Time-Critical Theory of Social Misrecognition in Welfare Societies

    No full text
This paper analyzes recognition as a temporal phenomenon. It seeks to betterunderstand how the temporality of recognition—that is, when it is demanded, received, and given, and for how long—is structured in modern societies, and whatthe consequences are when these temporal structures erode or collapse. To thisend, the paper focuses on two social processes: poverty and the precarizationof work. It argues that both are better understood through the lens of thetemporal dimension of recognition—or more precisely, the temporal dimensionof non-recognition and misrecognition. This perspective reveals that poverty andprecarization are temporally extended forms of non-recognition. It becomes clearthat the timing of these experiences within a person’s life course, their duration, and the temporal regimes established by welfare states all play a crucial role. These regimes often exclude and disadvantage those affected, reinforcing theirmarginalization over time
