    Museum Karaoke AI - exploring the potentials of Artificial Intelligence for edutaining museum visitors through a co design approach

    More and more museums are experimenting with emerging technologies to attract visitors while balancing entertainment and education, a concept known as edutainment. Although AI has been researched extensively for archival, collection management, and visitor analysis, its potential for enhancing edutainment beyond conversational AI remains underexplored. This thesis addresses this gap by exploring how AI can support edutainment in the nature and technology museum Haus der Natur in Salzburg, Austria. A co-design approach was employed, bringing together museum professionals and experts in AI and design to ideate on novel AI applications. The findings were summarized into four themes through thematic analysis. Further focus was set on the theme ”Creative Exploration of Museum Content Through Generative AI” by developing Museum Karaoke AI (MuseKAI)—an exhibition prototype that lets visitors generate customized educational songs about exhibits using a tangible interface. MuseKAI was evaluated at the Haus der Natur, measuring and comparing visitor engagement and learning through a mixed methods approach, including observations, semi-structured interviews, and standardized questionnaires. Results indicated that MuseKAI engaged most visitors, particularly children, while contributing to informal learning. Final discussions critically reflect on the use of AI in museums and conclude that MuseKAI should not be deployed in its current form.     Connecting strangers in public transport through play

    Public transportation plays a crucial role in urban life, bringing diverse individuals together and offering countless opportunities for social encounters between strangers. In the city brief interactions with strangers can foster a sense of belonging and enhance well-being, highlighting the potential for playable city design that prioritizes enjoyment and social connection for its citizens. This thesis follows a Situated Play Design approach to address this underexplored research context by investigating the potential and impact of technology that connects strangers in public transport through play. Here an investigation took place, that revealed playful behavior that people already engage in when connecting with strangers in public urban transport in Salzburg. 13 Play Potentials emerged that served as the basis for an ideation workshop that investigated different approaches to playful technology within this space. One idea from the workshop was then developed and tested in the form of a prototype, called PacPals. PacPals makes use of movement, game elements and collaboration to create connecting experiences between two unacquainted seat neighbors traveling a vehicle of public transport. PacPals was tested in the field by setting it up in metro trains in Munich and recruiting participants on the spot, observing and conducting interviews with strangers as well as acquainted players. Findings show that PacPals positively facilitated encounters between strangers and supported playful behavior. However, some aspects of the game as well as individual factors limited the emerging of feelings of connection as well as unembarrassed play.     Open Linguistics / Individual differences in event experiences and psychosocial factors as drivers for perceived linguistic change following occupational major life events

    The aim of this study is to investigate both quantitatively and qualitatively the impact of careerrelatedmajor life events (MLEs) on patterns of reported linguistic change across the lifespan, with anemphasis on how individual differences relate to differential patterns of MLE-related change. The occupationalsignificant life events scrutinized here include entry into the workforce, job/career change, unemployment,and retirement. We analyzed survey data from 154 German-speaking adults in Austria who experienced(at least) one of these career-related MLEs. Results from Bayesian modeling showed that individual differencesin event experiences (e.g., how stressful an MLE is perceived, how damaging an MLE is for one’s social status)alongside social factors such as varietal proficiency affect the degree of perceived MLE-related change in thesociolinguistic repertoire. Qualitatively, the thematic analysis revealed that facets of the linguistic marketplaceseemed responsible for occupational MLE-related linguistic change, but also socio-affective drivers such asdialect pride and career-resultant shifts in one’s social networks and contact with other dialects

    New discussions about the meaning, interpretation and genesis of the State of Israel have been emerging, particularly since the brutal attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7, 2023. Even from the early days of Zionism, the view of the Land and the State of Israel has been characterized by controversy, divergent opinions, and fragile questions about identities, security concerns and a peculiar combination of secular-national, religious and political influencing factors. The diversity of controversies often leads to avoidance tactics and the omission of a genuine engagement with the context of current discourses.The following article thus aims to shed light on the various language models and historical backgrounds of the genesis and current forms of Zionism and criticism of the State of Israel and diverse Zionist manifestations. To this end, the text examines Jewish and Christian challenges in the discourse, places them within the history of Zionism and finally concludes with a plea to look at the complexities and ambiguities of the various positions and views on the State of Israel and its theological and political significance. According to the authors, it is therefore particularly important to train an awareness of the terms used as well as a critical reflection of one’s own points of view, so that dialogue can be a key to become more conscious of the incompleteness of the individual perspectives. Finally, the importance of the Land of Israel for bothreligions is shown

    Evaluating the effectiveness of categorical time-series based on semantic earth observation workflows in land cover monitoring : a case study of Kanthuni, Makueni County, Kenya

    Earth observation data plays a key role in the analysis and monitoring of land cover dynamics.With increased availability of EO data, it is essential to develop and utilize effective workflowsacross studies to evaluate the land cover changes. This thesis evaluated the effectiveness ofsemantic EO workflow in monitoring and quantifying long-term land cover dynamics in semi-arid regions. The analysis aimed to answer the question, how effective are a semantic EOworkflows in monitoring and quantifying long-term land cover dynamics, while ensuringautomation, reproducibility and scalability? A semantic EO workflow was used to analyze bothSentinel-2 and Landsat 8 images of the area of interest, which was Kanthuni, Makueni County, asemi-arid area characterized by a seasonal river and sand dams. The workflow relied on SatelliteImage Automatic Mapper (SIAMTM) to semantically process the datasets and the Semantiquepython library to for semantic querying and analysis. Vegetation analysis focused on frequencyof observation, intensity, seasonality, and greenness index. The results indicated a consistencybetween the outputs from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 SIAM-derived data. Both Sentinel-2 andLandsat 8 datasets exhibited periodic vegetation peaks in the raw data, with notable coincidingpeaks in 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The vegetation intensity analysis focused on the frequencyof observation of each subclass (weak, average, and strong) as a percentage over the datasettemporal range. The results indicated that the average vegetation subclass dominated theobservations, highlighted by widespread and consistently higher percentage frequencies acrossboth S2 and L8 datasets with maximums of 35.8% and 24% respectively. For seasonalityanalysis, Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8 data revealed a higher frequency of vegetation observationsduring the wet season with very comparable maximum percentages of 25.2% and 25.9%respectively. Further, the greenness index was higher during the wet seasons and where therewere notable outliers, a higher precipitation amount was recorded, which explained the peaks.The semantic EO workflow utilized in this study demonstrated its effectiveness in monitoringand quantifying long-term land cover dynamics in semi-arid regions as highlighted by the results.This confirms the reproducibility of results while using the semantic EO workflow regardless ofthe dataset.     This study traces the bilateral relations between China and Russia from 2021 to 2023. During this time,the sanctions were imposed on Russia, affecting the overall stability of the country.The use of sanctions against Russian Federation was meant to change the political course of action ofthe government, however, the course remains stable and Russia is seeking alternatives to the Western market, strengthening trade cooperation with China.Collecting evidence from trade statistics with sentiment and discourse over the years, this study analyzes how sanctions affected bilateral trade and the shift in strategic narratives.
