Connecting on their own terms : community networks and collective governance in Colombia
This thesis examines Colombian community networks (CNs) as collectively governed internet infrastructures through the theoretical frameworks of the commons, internet sovereignty, and self‑determination. Despite the rapid global expansion of internet access, significant gaps persist. Commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often neglect these regions due to low profitability, prompting communities to develop their own connectivity solutions.Grounded in qualitative case studies of seven Colombian CNs, this research explores their motivations, governance mechanisms, and social dynamics. Using Ostrom’s commons as an analytical lens, the study reveals that Colombian CNs align strongly with key principles such as clearly defined boundaries, collective‑choice arrangements, and multi‑level participation. Beyond providing connectivity, CNs are based on and foster autonomy, cultural identity, and social cohesion. However, challenges remain: declining community participation, reliance on corporate backbone infrastructure, limited technical expertise, and insufficient regulatory recognition threaten their sustainability. The findings highlight the transformative potential of CNs as infrastructures of autonomy and digital sovereignty. Yet, achieving their long‑term viability requires tailored state support, including regulatory frameworks, dedicated funding, and capacity‑building programs that respect community autonomy. This research contributes a Global South perspective to ongoing debates on digital inclusion, arguing that CNs represent both a practical solution for bridging the digital divide and a laboratory for reimagining participatory internet governance.submitted by Andrea Torres PerdomoLiteraturverzeichnis: Seite 86-100Masterarbeit Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Austria 2025Masterarbeit Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Belgium 202
No deterministic chance
This thesis is written in the vicinity of metaphysics. The topic of this thesis is the debate on deterministic chance. Deterministic chance is the idea that chance and determinism are com- patible. This view is called compatibilism. Incompatibilism, however, is the negation of com- patibilism, and is the notion that chance and determinism are not compatible. The understand- ing of incompatibilism and compatibilism in this debate is different to how the terms incompatibilism and compatibilism are used in other discussions, such as in the debate on Free Will. The problem this thesis addresses is to provide a counterargument to compatibilism. This is why this thesis ultimately argues for incompatibilism. There are many different arguments for compatibilism in the literature. However, this thesis focuses on what is in the following called ‘Best Compatibilist Argument’ (BCA). The BCA is the argument that incompatibilism, under the metaphysical doctrine of Lewisian Humeanism leads to an implausible consequence. The im- plausible consequence is that incompatibilism, under Lewisian Humeanism, must eliminate chance from its ontology. The BCA states that we must therefore allow for chance on some higher ontological level, which leads to the BCA’s conclusion that chance and determinism are compatible, in the sense that chance is on some higher ontological level whereas determinism is on a lower, more fundamental level. The thesis develops a different interpretation for resolving the problem posed by the BCA, which is the Separate Systems Approach (SSA). It is inspired by David Lewis who developed Lewisian Humeanism and is considered an incompatibilist, although he does not provide much argument for his view incompatibilism. The SSA proposes that we should separate Chance and Determinism into different systems, which resolves the problem of the BCA while main- taining incompatibilism under Lewisian Humeanism. Finally, the thesis shows that the SSA is ultimately a better fit to metaphysical doctrine of Lewisian Humeanism. This leads to the con- clusion that we should prefer incompatibilism and reject compatibilism.submitted by: Lukas Lautischer, BALiteraturverzeichnis: Seite 29Masterarbeit Paris-Lodron-University of Salzburg 202
Globalizations / Fixing things from the outside? Diaspora politicians and transnational political engagement
Scholarship on diaspora political engagement is unfolding in novel waysexploring the participation of second-generation diaspora individuals andengagement patters of authoritarian and hybrid regimes. Focusing on theunique role of diaspora politicians, I contend that these individuals adeptlyleverage their identity to impact politics and advocate for change. The articledemonstrates their adaptability in different settings and evolving advocacystrategies. The article employs a multilingual analysis of social media, publicinterviews, and public appearances in Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovinausing an exploratory case study of a German-Bosnian politician. Thisexploration underscores their flexibility and evolving advocacy dynamics.Furthermore, it illustrates the way these politicians enhance their profileswithin the countries where they’ve been elected and in countries of theirdescent. This serves to strengthen their chances of re-election on one handwhile also drawing attention to authoritarian tendencies, potentially clearinga path for democratic advancement on the other
mid-twentieth century
The television has been a staple in America’s living rooms for decades. It was there for Kennedy’s assassination, the Moon Landing and the Beatles’ first performance in America. It has acted like a window to the world for those without access to education or other entertainment. Beloved sitcoms would gather families across the country to share laughs. Most programs were set in a family home in the suburbs, reflecting real-life families. Over time television evolved and so did the portrayal of women. Changes in politics and society led to more versatile, more realistic portrayals. This research examines the representation of women on television in the mid-20th century by the example of five iconic characters. Supported by feminist theory and historical background, this thesis examines the different portrayals of women from the 1950s to the 1970s. It demonstrates how each woman reinforces or challenges gender norms of the time as well as certain stereotypes connected with females on television.eingereicht von Theresa WallnerLiteraturverzeichnis: Seite 71-73Masterarbeit Paris Lodron Universität Salzburg 202
Out of the USSR. Travelling Women – Travelling Memories
This book examines how women authors recall their own and their families’ past lives after having emigrated from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, and how they reflect on their new country of residence, be it Germany, Austria, Israel, USA, or Finland, among others. The chapters connect migration, memory, and gender studies to analyse literary presentations created by these "travelling" women.
The aim of the book is to pay attention both to women’s contribution to cultural transfer, and to the mobility of memories: for the first time, it brings women’s narratives as a form and tool to work through both individual and collective traumas to the forefront, remedying a long-standing omission in Russian and post-Soviet migration history. At the same time, the volume looks at "travelling" memories and cultural traumas from a gendered perspective: what happens when the recollections of women’s traumatic experiences of Soviet history travel through time and space?
As this volume argues, narratives by women who left the Soviet Union often call into question official accounts of Soviet history, and rewrite them in a way that makes room for gendered lived experience
International Journal of Science Education / Investigating trees as an interdisciplinary phenomenon in climate regulation: an intervention study on iSTEM education and scientific literacy in secondary schools
Climate change and CO2-emissions are key-issues of the21st century. As a complex interdisciplinary phenomenon, educational systems appear to be forced to expand their curriculabeyond disciplines or school subjects. Thus, cross-disciplinaryconcepts in science, such as iSTEM (integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) address this demand. Also, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation andDevelopment (OECD) stresses the need for interdisciplinarity incompulsory education. The present intervention study ‘CO2BS -Coole Bäume und Sensoren [Cool(ing) Trees and Sensors]’ focuseson the tree as a key-factor in the understanding of gas-exchangefor which a proper scientific understanding demands thinkingacross disciplines. In accordance with a OECD competenceframework, Scientific Literacy, the intervention aimed to fostersecondary school students’ interdisciplinary conceptualknowledge (ICK) of how a tree’s exchange of O2 and CO2 can beinvestigated scientifically. Students’ changes in self-concept inscience as well as their interest in climate and science along withepistemic emotions associated with scientific procedures werealso investigated. The results showed positive changes instudents’ self-concept and epistemic emotions. Though ICKincreased significantly too, the results indicate that futureinterventions will need to focus more on how to establishinterdisciplinarity within secondary education more effectively.Salzburger Landesregierung 20204-WISS/238 87872
Public Administration Review / The role of institutional factors in shaping university mission statements: A topic‐modeling approach
Abstract Mission statements are common instruments for the strategic positioning of universities. However, there are few large‐scale, cross‐national studies examining the factors that influence the content of universities' mission statements. We address this research gap, exploring the content of 413 mission statements from European universities by applying correlated topic modeling (CTM). Moreover, relying on institutional theories of organization, we study factors that explain differences in the content of mission statements. Our findings reveal six distinct topics addressed in mission statements. The prevalence of a specific topic is significantly shaped by the cultural rationalization of the universities' national context, the university's founding context, and institutional control. Our findings not only contribute to research on universities' strategic positioning but also shed light on the diffusion of global trends across organizations and the determinants of their adaptation. Moreover, our study offers an illustrative example of how big data analytics can enhance public administration research
