Anticancer activity of Cedrus atlantica essential oil on melanoma 
and colorectal cancer cells

Background: Skin and colorectal cancers present major worldwide health issues, driving 
the need for ongoing investigation into innovative treatment options. Natural compounds, 
particularly those derived from plants such as essential oils, offer a valuable source of 
bioactive substances with therapeutic potential. 
Objectives: This research aimed to explore the cytotoxic effects of Cedrus atlantica 
essential oil (CAEO) on three human cell lines: normal keratinocytes (HaCaT), malignant 
melanoma cells (A375), and colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29). The study sought to 
evaluate CAEO's effectiveness as an anticancer agent while assessing its safety for non-
cancerous cells. 
Materials and Methods: The cytotoxic impact of CAEO was tested using the Alamar Blue 
assay, while the identification of compounds in the CAEO was performed using the GC-MS 
method. Cells (1 × 10⁴ per well) were cultured in 96-well plates and allowed to adhere for 
24 hours, reaching approximately 80–85% confluence. The following day, the old medium was 
replaced with fresh medium tailored to each cell line, containing either CAEO at 
concentrations of 0.5% and 1% or CAEO mixed with PEG-400 and Tween 20 (CA-PEG and CA-
TW at 100 μg/ml and 200 μg/ml). After 24 hours of exposure, 20 μL of Alamar Blue reagent 
was added to each well, and the plates were incubated at 37 °C for 3 hours. Absorbance was 
measured at 570 nm using a microplate reader (xMark™ Microplate Spectrophotometer, Bio-
Rad, Hercules, CA, USA). 
Results and Conclusion: The findings revealed that CAEO significantly reduced the viability 
of A375 and HT-29 cancer cells by more than 50%, regardless of how it was introduced into 
the medium. Conversely, the HaCaT cell line maintained a viability of over 85%, indicating low 
toxicity to normal cells. The components of Cedrus atlantica essential oil with the highest 
concentrations contributing to its cytotoxic effect were identified: cis-(-)-2,4a,5,6,9a-
Hexahydro-3,5,5,9-tetramethyl(1H) benzocycloheptene (12.92%); 1H-benzocycloheptene, 
2,4a,5,6,7,8,9,9a-octahydro-3,5,5-trimethyl-9-methylene-, (4aS-cis) (16.76%) and β-
Himachalene (39.23%). These results suggest that Cedrus atlantica essential oil holds promise 
as a selective anticancer agent, demonstrating notable antitumor activity while sparing 
healthy cells. Further investigation is recommended to confirm its therapeutic potential.

Technological development of liposomes with different types of 
active ingredients

Neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease and other dementias as well 
as Parkinson's disease, are emerging as profoundly significant challenges and burdens to 
global health. Conventional drug therapy It's important to note that while traditional therapies 
can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life, they do not offer a cure for 
neurodegenerative diseases. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) restricts the transport of several 
therapeutically utilized central nervous system (CNS)-active drugs. Intranasal drug delivery 
means a suitable choice to bypass BBB and effectively transport therapeutic drugs to CNS 
target. The application of nanocarriers is crucial, since they can protect the drug from 
enzymatic degradation, efflux and can improve absorption and transport of drugs across the 
BBB directly into the brain. Liposomes are nanoscale lipid-based vesicles widely studied for 
their drug-delivery capabilities. They have improved properties over conventional carriers, 
such as site-specific targeted drug delivery or controlled release. 
Our research focuses on the development and characterization of liposomal formulations 
containing three potential CNS drugs (dopamine, vinpocetine and donepezil), which has low 
stability or poor bioavailability during conventional administration. By encapsulating these 
compounds into liposomes as a drug delivery system, their solubility, stability and BBB 
permeability can be improved. In the frame of the study, we are planning to investigate the 
effects of liposome surface charge on the nasal applicability (mucoadhesion-, drug release and 
drug permeability properties) as well as chemical and physical stability. 
In conclusion, our goal is to develop robust, stable and effective nasal liposomal drug 
delivery systems that can improve treatment outcomes in neurodegenerative diseases.

Collagen films as carriers of bioactive compounds for wound 
healing applications

Introduction: Nowadays, the treatment of chronic wounds involves high costs, estimated 
at billions of dollars worldwide. Technological advances, costly treatment procedures and the 
growing geriatric population contribute to these increasing costs. For example, in the United 
States, chronic wounds are estimated to affect 6.5 million patients each year, representing an 
expense of US$25 Billion by the healthcare system. Although a significant number of dressings 
with interesting properties are available on the market, they still have limitations in controlling 
secondary infections and in promoting the healing process. To overcome these limitations, 
this study has combined curcumin with type 1 collagen fiber, a biocompatible polymer, with 
the aim of developing films which have potential antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, as 
well as healing-promoting properties. Materials and methods: During this study, different 
formulations were prepared in which the percentage of glycerol and the percentage of 
curcumin were modified in order to identify how both components affected the collagen 
structure. The films were characterized in terms of their mechanical properties using an RSA - 
G2 solids analyzer equipped with an 8 mm circular compression geometry. In addition, an in 
vitro dissolution test was conducted to determine the release profile of curcumin, using UV-
Vis Spectrophotometry with a plate reader. Results and discussion: In the mechanical 
characterization test, interesting results were obtained after the addition of glycerol, showing 
an enhancement in the flexibility and mobility of the collagen chains that make up the films. 
Finally, the release test showed that all the systems presented a release profile of order 1; 
however, the systems containing 5% glycerol showed better control of curcumin release. In 
this way, the system with 5% glycerol and 10% curcumin showed practically an order 0 profile, 
where the drug concentration is independent of the release rate. In conclusion, these systems 
could be excellent options for wound dressings given that they enhance treatment adherence 
and prevent patient overdosing, leading to improved therapeutic outcomes.

Cellular uptake of nanostructured lipid carriers as delivery 
systems for miRNA in mouse fibroblast cell line

Effective cellular internalization and intracellular release are critical when developing 
miRNA-based therapies, as miRNA must be delivered to the cytosol to achieve their bioactivity 
(Scheideler et al., 2020). Despite their therapeutic potential, miRNA applications are limited 
by poor stability and insufficient cellular uptake. Therefore, we developed cationic 
nanostructured lipid carriers (cNLCs) as delivery agents for miRNAs and investigated the 
concentration- and time-dependent uptake of miRNA-cNLC complexes in 3T3-L1 
preadipocytes, derived from mouse embryonic fibroblasts. 
Confluent cells were transfected with miRNA-cNLC complexes at a 1:2.5 (w/w) ratio, with 
miRNA concentration ranging from 100 nM to 400 nM, and uptake intensity was measured 
using a CLARIOstar plate reader (BMG LABTECH, Germany). For confocal laser scanning 
microscopy (CLSM), cells were seeded in glass-bottom dishes, transfected with complexes, 
and incubated for 4h or 24 h. Cells were then fixed with 4% formaldehyde, and counterstaining 
using AlexaFlour 488 for cytoskeleton, while nuclei were stained with Hoechst 33342. Images 
were obtained with Leica Stellaris 5 (Leica Microsystems, Germany). 
Results have shown that a higher cellular uptake was observed at 100 nM compared to 
higher concentrations, suggesting that elevated particle concentration may disrupt cell 
membrane recovery due to increased positive charge. In addition, CLSM confirmed the 
intracellular localization of complexes in vesicles, supporting an endocytic mechanism. A time-
dependent uptake profile showed rapid initial uptake, as approximately 67% of 1:2.5 
complexes are found in 3T3-L1 cells after 30 minutes.

Venezuelan Snapshot: Migration and Deportation 
Following the events in Venezuela, it tumbles deeper into dictatorship with the inauguration of 
President Nicolás Maduro on January 10, 2025. Despite the fact that the United States 
(temporarily) eased its sectoral sanctions against Venezuela as response to the Barbados 
agreement between the Caracas regime and its opposition on guarantees of the political 
conditions for the 2024 presidential election, the results of the elections in July were highly 
controversial, and the Venezuelan people were once again victims of a rigged election. Meanwhile, 
the new US president, Donald Trump, seems to have taken a new approach to his conflicted 
relationship with Venezuela, from which more than 7.9 million people have emigrated over the 
years due to worrying conditions. The majority (85%) settled within the region, while a growing 
number targeted the US. Host countries in the region are trying to legalize Venezuelan migrants 
by issuing temporary permits, while Trump recently announced that he would not renew the 
temporary protected status granted to immigrants from Venezuela starting in April. This measure 
could lead to the deportation of hundreds of thousands of people. Maduro and the US government 
already reached an agreement to repatriate Venezuelan citizens deported from the US, thereby on 
February 10, two Venezuelan planes returned with about 190 Venezuelans. As part of the Trump 
administration's strict immigration policy, hundreds of migrants were sent to the migration 
centre established in Guantanamo Bay, from where another plane arrived in Caracas on February 
20 with 177 Venezuelan nationals. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a brief overview 
of the current events regarding the Venezuelan crisis, as well as to explore the circumstances of 
the aforementioned measures and the prospects for Venezuelan migrants.

Figyelemmel kísérve a venezuelai eseményeket, az ország egyre mélyebb diktatúrába süllyed 
Nicolás Maduro elnök 2025. január 10-i beiktatása által. Hiába enyhült a Nyugat Venezuela 
irányába, amikor is az Egyesült Államok (ideiglenesen) enyhítette Venezuelával szembeni 
szektorális szankcióit, miután a caracasi rezsim és ellenzéke megállapodást kötött Barbadoson a 
2024-es elnökválasztás politikai feltételeinek garanciáiról. A júliusi választások eredménye 
ugyanis igencsak vitatott, nagy valószínűséggel ismét elcsalt választásokról beszélhetünk. 
Mindeközben az Egyesült Államok új elnöke, Donald Trump új megközelítésbe helyezte 
konfliktusos kapcsolatát Venezuelával, ahonnan az aggasztó körülmények miatt több mint 7,9 
millió ember vándorolt el az évek során. A többség (85%) a régión belül telepedett le, míg egyre 
többen vették célba az Egyesült Államokat. A régió befogadó országai ideiglenes engedélyek 
kiadásával próbálják legalizálni a venezuelai migránsok helyzetét, míg Trump nemrégiben

politikájának keretében több száz migránst küldtek a Guantánamói-öbölben létrehozott 
migrációsközpontba, ahonnan február 20-án újabb repülőgép érkezett Caracasba 177 venezuelai 
migránssal. Az előadás célja, hogy rövid helyzetképet nyújtson az elmúlt év eseményeiről, ami a 
venezuelai válságot illeti, valamint feltárja az említett intézkedések körülményeit és a venezuelai 
migránsok kilátásait.

Hybrid Warfare in South America: Lessons from Iraq and the Middle East 
Hybrid warfare represents a significant challenge in contemporary security studies, blending 
conventional military operations with irregular tactics, cyber warfare, propaganda, and economic 
coercion. This study examines the hybrid warfare strategies employed in Iraq and the Middle East, 
analyzing the role of state and non-state actors in shaping modern conflicts. Drawing parallels to 
South America, the paper explores the region’s geopolitical vulnerabilities, the involvement of 
criminal organizations, and the increasing use of technology in asymmetric conflicts. The study 
highlights emerging threats and defense strategies applicable to South America by assessing these 
trends. The findings offer insights into policy recommendations for regional security cooperation, 
countering hybrid threats, and adapting military strategies to evolving security dynamics.

Venezuela: A Turning Point between Mexico and Trujillismo 
During the Cold War, Mexico and Venezuela became a target that Trujillo did not look away from, 
due to his excessive desire to control the Dominican opposition at the international level. One of 
the main reasons that made Mexico's relations with Trujillismo, particularly complex was that 
Mexico's revolutionary foreign policy was not only incompatible with Trujillo's dictatorial regime 
in the Dominican Republic but rather facilitated its association and alliances between politicians 
with democratic ideology in the region, such as Romulo Betancourt in Venezuela, a fervent 
opponent of Trujillo. Research works such as Tejeda's in his book “Enfrentar la fiera en su propia 
madriguera” shed light on the 1956 plot against dictator Trujillo, which was supported by former 
presidents Lazaro Cárdenas of Mexico and Romulo Betancourt of Venezuela and other former 
South American presidents opposed to the Dominican regime. 
Our doctoral thesis, entitled "Relations between Mexico and the Dominican Republic during the 
Trujillo regime", which is currently in development, highlights in one of its chapters how the 
temporary alliances and/or the similarity of thought between Mexico and Venezuela regarding 
the Trujillo regime was a turning point in bilateral relations between Mexico and the Trujillo regime.

Venezuela: Un punto de inflexión entre México y el trujillismo  
Durante la Guerra Fría, México y Venezuela se convirtieron en un blanco del que Trujillo no 
desviaba la mirada, debido a su deseo desmedido de controlar la oposición a nivel internacional.  
Una de las razones principales que hacia particularmente complejas las relaciones de México 
con el trujillismo, obedecía a que la política exterior revolucionaria de México aparentemente 
no solo era incompatible con el régimen dictatorial de Trujillo en la Republica dominicana, sino 
que facilitó, más bien, su asociación y alianzas entre políticos de ideología democrática en la 
región, como lo fue Rómulo Betancourt en Venezuela, un fervoroso opositor de Trujillo.  
Trabajos de investigación como el de Tejeda en su libro ‘’Enfrentar la fiera en su propia 
madriguera”, arroja información acerca de la trama de 1956 contra el dictador Trujillo que 
contó con el apoyo de los expresidentes Lázaro Cárdenas de México y el Rómulo Betancourt 
en Venezuela y otros expresidentes sudamericanos opuestos al régimen dominicano.  
La tesis de doctorado titulada ‘’ Relaciones entre México y la Republica dominicana durante el 
Trujillismo’’ que se encuentra en desarrollo, destaca en uno de sus capítulos como las alianzas 
coyunturales y/o la similitud de pensamiento entre México y Venezuela frente al régimen de 
Trujillo fue un punto de inflexión en las relaciones bilaterales entre México y el trujillismo.

2008-ban publikáltam a Studia UBB Musica (Coca Gabriela, 2008) című folyóiratban 
egy életrajzi tanulmányt Terényi Ede zeneszerzőről. (Coca Gabriela, 2016) A követ-
kező mottó volt a tanulmány élén: 
„Ha folyóvíz volnék / bánatot nem tudnék / Hegyek völgyek között / szép csendesen foly-
nék / Partot mosogatnék / füvet újítanék / Szomjú madaraknak, / innyok adogatnék.”
A fenti sorok egy népdal szövegét alkotják, melyet a zeneszerző átvett és fel-
dolgozott 1954-ben (19 évesen). Három egynemű szólamra kis kórusművet 
írt, női, vagy gyermekkarra. Bartók Béla 27 egyneműkarának friss megisme-
rése ihlette a fiatal zeneszerző szakos zeneakadémistát. Nem Bartók-utánzat-
ként képzelte művét, inkább próbálta magát beleélni a bartóki művek hang-
zásvilágába. Visszatekintve a zeneszerző úgy véli, hogy ez a kis mű az ő igazi 
op. 1-es műve. Jelen tanulmány célja e kórusmű elemzése, amely nagyon 
közel állt a zeneszerző lelkéhez, élete végéig.

A  mű két formarészből épül, A  + Av1 (8+9) ütem, melyet egy 2 ütemes 
Codetta zár. A  két formarész éles tempóváltással különül el egymástól 
(Andante tranquillo | = 62 / Agitato). Az első formarész tempója hozzásegíti 
a kibontakozó dallamot a szöveg illusztratív kifejezéséhez: „Hegyek, völgyek 
között / szép csendesen folynék”. Az Agitato már a cselekvés dinamizmusát 
fejezi ki: „partot mosogatnék”, „füvet újítanék”, „szomjú madaraknak, innyok 
adogatnék”.
Az első formarészben a dinamika 2+2 ütemenként mozaikszerűen alakul, 
fény és árnyék folyamatos váltakozását sugallva (mf + p + mf +p). A dina-
mika egyszerű váltakozása valójában szorosan követi a motivikus, 2+2 üte-
mes, heterofonikus, enyhén variált ismétléseket.
A kezdő 4 ütem után, mely szimmetrikusan tagolódik [2(1+1)+2 (1+1)]-re, 
a következő 4 ütem 2+2-re oszlik.
A második formarészben az elsőhöz hasonlóan, a szerző minden verssort 
elhangzása után megismétel. A formarész kezdő két ütemében (9-10. ütem), 
„Partot mosogatnék, füvet újítanék” szöveggel, a szólamok „alulról felfele” 
haladó, lépcsőzetes, polifonikus sorrendbe lépnek be. 
Az Av1 formarész kezdő ütemének alsó szólama (9. ütem) megegyezik 
dallamilag az A formarész 4. ütemének középső szólamával. 
A formarész két frázisból alakul, amely összesen 5+4 ütem. Az 5 ütemes 
frázis tartalmazza az egész mű dinamikai és ambitus csúcspontját. A dina-
mika eléri a forte-t, a szoprán hangmagassága pedig a g2 csúcspontot. 
A formarész második frázisa, a 14-17. ütem az első formarész 5-8. ütemé-
nek egy egészhanggal feljebb való variált ismétlése. Ezekben az ütemekben a 
felső szólam énekli a dallamot, míg a középső és az alsó szólam harmóniai 
támaszt biztosít. A dallamvonal ezekben az ütemekben kitűnik változatos rit-
mikájával, valamint kanyargó, „szép csendesen folydogáló” dallamosságával.
Hasonlóan, a második formarész első frázisa, rokon motivikus alapon az 
első formarész első frázisával. 
A dinamikai fokok ebben a második formarészben is 1-2 ütemes moza-
ikkockákhoz hasonlóan társulnak, kivéve a 10-11. ütem crescendo-ját, amely 
előkészíti a kórusmű csúcspontját (lásd a formát ábrázoló vázlatot a cikk 
 elején).
A  Codetta záró két üteme megnyugvást hoz magával, pianissimo-ban, 
majd ppp rit. dim.-ban. Szövegként visszatér az első versszak „Ha folyóvíz 
volnék” kétszeri ismétléssel, motivikusan pedig – egyrészt a kezdő motívum

hangközileg variált tükörfordítása (lásd az 1. ütemet a 18. ütemmel párhu-
zamban), az 1. ütem 3:1-es modellt ölt, míg a 18. ütem 2:3-as modell; más-
részt pedig, záróütemként a szerző megismétli variáltan a mű csúcspontját 
képező ütemet. Az, ami a csúcspont pillanatában precíz ritmikával és éles 
dinamikával hangzott el forte-ban, itt ppp rit. dim. formában tér vissza.

A zeneszerző az op. 1-es kórusában, egy konszonáns, harmonikus légkört 
alakít ki. Leginkább dúr és moll akkordokat használ. Az előforduló disszo-
nanciákat az akkordok alapelemeivel egy időben megszólaló díszítőhangok 
hozzák létre (késleltetések, átvezető hangok, váltóhangok). A szerző ugyan-
akkor gyakran használ kvart-akkordokat, amelyek szintén disszonánsak, és 
érdekes geometrikus akkordokat (elemzési modellért lásd Terényi Ede kórus-
művészete című tanulmányomat: Coca Gabriela, 2018).

Összefoglalva, a szerző 19 éves volt, amikor ezt a művet írta. A mű össze-
tettsége, kis terjedelme ellenére, a szerző logikus gondolkodásának magas 
fokát bizonyítja. Ráadásul, a  szöveg kiválasztása nem volt véletlenszerű. 
A vonzódás ehhez a tartalomhoz természetes volt egy olyan ember számára, 
akinek lelki vonásai rezonáltak e szöveg kifejező gyengédségével.

STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE (TDK) 
IN THE FIELD OF ARTS AT THE FACULTY OF 
HUMANITIES AND ARTS OF ESZTERHÁZY 
KÁROLY CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY
The Faculty of Humanities and Arts of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic Uni-
versity, which is maintained by the Archdiocese of Eger, includes, in addition 
to the traditional liberal arts fields, art communication and art education, 
and is therefore characterised by diversity. Through its various programmes, 
the faculty seeks to contribute to raising the cultural and literacy level of stu-
dents and their wider community. The citizens of the faculty consider it their 
duty to enrich the life of the city of Eger through their intellectual contribu-
tion with scientific and cultural lectures, open university and artistic pro-
grammes open to all. They feel it is their mission to involve the youth of the 
city in the life of the university and the faculty through their programmes, so 
that they can become interested in the values of culture and science as early 
as possible. The faculty’s institutes and departments offer bachelor’s degree 
courses, teacher training, disciplinary master’s degree courses, and part-time 
teacher training, while the Institute of History also runs a doctoral school. 
Students can participate in faculty talent workshops related to their chosen 
field of study, according to their academic interests, and can deepen their 
research in specific areas that go beyond the curriculum. In addition to pro-
viding professional guidance, the talent workshops help to ensure that inter-
ested students have the ideal research conditions to develop their careers as 
effectively as possible. Talent workshop facilitators introduce early career 
researchers to the basics of scientific work and research methods.
Student Research Conference (TDK) work has been carried out at the 
EKCU Faculty of Humanities and Arts since the 1970s. Between 2009 and 
2015, the faculty’s National Student Research Conference (OTDK) results 
have stabilised at a good level in the arts, and of course students regularly

win prizes in English studies and history. The number of entries presented at 
the OTDK has been around 50, with a stable ratio of first place and special 
prize winners of 20-33%. Award-winning research papers are published in 
academic journals, and TDK research results are also published in journals. 
The non-OTDK conference attendance among our TDK students is now 
becoming regular (1-2 students per year), while the visual arts TDK students 
have been presenting their work in large numbers at national and interna-
tional exhibitions for years (Golden Drawing Angle, Tipozóna, Kecskemét 
Animation Film Festival, Budapest Art_Book Fair). In 2019, three of our 
former successful OTDK students are currently colleagues as Eger faculty 
members, several of them doctoral students. The faculty also took part in 
the organisation of the OTDKs in 2011 and 2013, hosting the Humanities 
and then the Arts sections. In recognition of the outstanding quality of their 
organisational work, the Outstanding TDK Organiser Award, the Jubilee 
Commemorative Medal and the Master Teacher Gold Medals were awarded 
to colleagues who participated in the conferences.
The EKCU Faculty of Humanities and Arts’ talent workshops are: English 
and American Studies, Language and Literature, Music, History, Fine Arts 
and Art Theory, Media and Design, German Studies, Cultural Heritage, 
Studio of Young Filmmakers of Eger György Illés Talent Workshop. These 
workshops include lecturers such as Munkácsy Prize-winning graphic art-
ist Lajos Csontó, academician János Rainer M., Széchenyi Prize-winning 
historian, and Péter Szabó, Liszt Prize-winning cellist and solo cellist of the 
Budapest Festival Orchestra. We have the highest number of placings ever 
in the Arts Section of the 36th OTDK, with 27 prize-winning entries. First 
prizes: 5; Second prizes: 12; Third prizes: 6; Special prizes: 4 (OTDK Ered-
mények, 2023).
The aim of the faculty TDK workshops is to support the work of active 
TDK students and to involve new students in the faculty TDK activities. Our 
primary goal is to support the research and creative work of talented stu-
dents through extracurricular courses. This is complemented by the promo-
tion of scientific research among undergraduates and high school students: 
nationally renowned invited speakers, workshops, recruitment programmes, 
dissemination of results. We would like to develop students’ motivation 
and commitment to TDK work as soon as possible, so that more and more 
TDKs in the faculty are open to secondary school students, and form a link

between the scientific activities of students in secondary and higher educa-
tion. We also aim to improve the material and content conditions for talent 
management, for example by providing materials and tools for creative work 
and publishing student publications.
In our programmes to engage secondary school students, we mentor stu-
dents individually, involve them in training sessions for TDK students, the 
TDK conference, TDK study trips, linguistics, music, animation, cinema, 
and a series of science education lectures. In addition to learning about the 
work of the TDK workshops and participating in professional events, the 
TDKs also aim to prepare future students for their TDK work.
After this brief overview, I would like to say a few words about the 37th 
OTDK Art Section, which will be held in Eger, Hungary, at the Faculty of 
Humanities and Arts of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, between 23 
and 25 April 2025, and of which I am the Executive Chair. It is an immense 
challenge and an honour to organise this most prestigious all-round artistic 
event in Hungarian higher education, which is returning to Eger after 12 
years, which hosted the largest field ever (OMDK, 2013).
The tasks related to the organisation of the 37th OTDK Art Section are 
carried out by a team of experts with decades of OTDK experience. The 
inclusion of new fields of art in the section represents a major challenge for 
the organisation of the section. Of the 16 OTDK sections, the Arts’ section 
is expected to have the largest increase in participation, with a rise of almost 
26%. The trend already observed at the last OTDK, where the Arts’ Section 
has joined the ranks of the “big sections”, seems to be increasingly coming to 
fruition. The four institutes of the EKCU Faculty of Humanities and Arts, the 
Institute of Music, the Institute of Fine Arts and Art Theory, the Institute of 
Motion Picture and Communication and the Institute of Media and Design, 
are involved in the organisation. The relevant department of the Budapest 
Metropolitan University has partnered in the architecture field. The EKCU 
Project Department has provided support for the conference, and their staff 
has already invested an irreplaceable amount of quality and quantity of work 
in budget planning, preparation of ancillary activities (e.g. accommodation, 
catering, other material purchases) and operational tasks.
The increase in the number of participants in the Section means an 
increase in the number of sections, entries, judges, jury, theme leaders, chap-
erones. The sections seem to be even more heterogeneous than before, which

makes the work of the jury more difficult. Therefore, in addition to the selec-
tion of the jury, particular attention is paid to the preparation of the jury 
members. Jury nominations will be continuous from October 2024. This is 
rather early compared to the practice of other sections, but the heterogeneity 
of the genres of the sections justifies this.
Dóra Dávid, a student of the Doctoral School of Architecture at the Buda-
pest University of Technology and Economics, is the winner of the compe-
tition for the Tamás Roska Scientific Lecture in the Section of Arts. We hold 
the presentation on the opening day as part of the opening ceremony, as 
the winner of the Tamás Roska Award is able to present his/her results in a 
high-quality and enjoyable scientific and scientific-promoting presentation 
to young people interested in his/her field of expertise and their mentors 
participating in the OTDK, thus raising the profile of the opening ceremony. 
The different sessions of the Section are open to students and teachers 
from Eger and other secondary schools. Here, professionals can view the 
most outstanding art projects of the past two years, interpreted by students 
from Hungarian higher education institutions in Hungary and abroad. In 
addition to the works presented, the reflections of the renowned professional 
juries will also be of interest. Participation is subject to registration due to the 
varying capacity of the venues.
The visual sections almost always include exhibitions, which take place in 
more than ten venues in the cultural institutions of the city of Eger and in the 
buildings of the EKCU. The installed works are closely linked to the presenta-
tions given at the sessions. EKCU’s professionally competent students will 
guide the visitors through the exhibition spaces, giving them an insight into 
the competitions in the different fields and answering professional questions 
about further studies at the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University. We would 
like to recommend the Tamás Roska Science Lecture to secondary school 
students who are already here for serious career guidance. The Observatory, 
located in the Lyceum building, is open to the public throughout the session, 
with a valid OMDK pass. During the three days, we will also offer a range 
of physical activities that aim to strike a balance between intellectual and 
physical activities.
