Who are worried about the future? : an empirical investigation of the relationship between sociodemographic and socio-economic factors and different future worries of the adult population in Szeged

    Get PDF
Life in post-modern societies is exposed to a range of risks and challenges in different dimensions: people face environmental threats and societal risks at the same time. These issues contribute to rising uncertainty and concerns in the population. Our investigation aims to explore the level of worries about different potential risks in the future of both environmental and social nature. The survey was conducted in Szeged, Hungary in spring 2024 with a sample of 577 respondents representative by sex and age. People were asked to indicate the level of worries on a 0-10 scale about climate change, pandemics and epidemics, wars and armed conflicts, environmental pollution, widening gap between rich and poor, conflicts between different cultures, the rise of artificial intelligence, deepening inequalities between men and women, and overpopulation. The relationship with different socio-demographic and socio-economic factors has also been analysed. Our results suggest that the level of worries about environmental and social risks is significant in adult the population of Szeged. Women, elderly and people with lower socio-economic status tend to be more concerned

    Religion, secularization and social tensions

    Get PDF
In the study of the process of secularization, functional differentiation, which is a distinctive and even defining feature of modern societies, is particularly important. In this sense, different sectors of society (e.g. politics, economy, education) are becoming increasingly autonomous and no longer require religious legitimacy. According to Niklas Luhmann, who approaches sociology from the perspective of systems theory, social systems such as law, politics, and economics operate according to an autonomous logical mechanism. Two years after Luhmann’s death in 1998, André Kieserling published his systems theory interpretation of the sociology of religion, which was itself a theoretical milestone. Religion, Kieserling suggests, is a functional subsystem of modern society, which, like all other subsystems, is shaped by autopoietic and meaning-rich communication. Religion purports to explain, without contradiction, the relationship between the transcendent and the immanent in everyday life. Faith becomes a personal end product the power of which rests in its uniqueness and intimacy. In modern society, religion has become a social subsystem, now so complex that a separate science, theology, has been built around it. The systems theory of religion addresses important issues ranging from meaning and development to secularization, and it turns decades of sociological assumptions on their head. It offers a new vocabulary and a fresh philosophical and sociological approach to one of society’s most fundamental phenomena

Mítoszok, csapatszellem és valóság: a Francia Idegenlégió = Myths, esprit de corps and reality: the French Foreign Legion

    Get PDF
Each major military formation has its own history and myth, which changes and evolves with the actions of its units on the battlefield. In the case of the French Foreign Legion, there are two parallel myths: a negative (demonising) myth and a positive (canonising) myth. The Legion’s role is fundamental in the construction of this myth, both through its actions and through its intervention in the process to its own advantage. Three elements (memory, history and present expectations) are involved in this myth-making process, and the Legion has been able to manage these interactions, to control the evolution of the myth by preserving traditions and by disseminating an image that reinforces the legion (legiomania), in the face of what is known as legiophobia. The esprit de corps that characterises the unit contributes to this successful propaganda activity, so that the unit’s “internal policy” (commemorations, rites, traditions) is largely supported by its “external policy” (PR, interviews, publications, documentaries, etc.). The present paper will attempt to present a brief history of this world-renowned and recognised unit and will then use this historical background to examine the myths surrounding the unit and the specific team spirit that has a fundamental influence on the image of the unit

A Magyar Állami Operaház bemutatói és felújításai 1950 és 1956 között a sajtó szemüvegén keresztül = The performances and renovations of the Hungarian State Opera House between 1950 and 1956 through the eyes of the press

The aim of my study is to showcase the Rákosi Era’s opera premieres and renewals of the Opera House through the lenses of the time’s press. The base of my analysis are the papers published in this period by Új Zenei Szemle and Szabad Nép. I am looking for the answer to see to what extent the play critiques published in the political and professional press were part of the propaganda. I also examine how much the papers published in the profesional press were driven by ideology. I compare the different critics’ writings about the same play on different forums but I also contrast the same critics’s writings published in the professional and political daily newspapers to investigate their likenesses and differences. In aid to answer my questions I am using the method of discourse analysis

Energy security and sustainable development in Albania: the role of law in the renewable transition

    Get PDF
The worldwide transition policies toward sustainable energy systems are of peculiar importance not only in the scope of environmental governance but also in terms of energy security. As a catalyst for economic development, secure and affordable energy access can hinge on public infrastructure. The ever-increasing demand for energy creates pressure on national systems, as the intersection of development priorities and environmental responsibility brings both avenues for opportunities and structural challenges. While recognizing Albania's potential, this study will focus on the role of renewable energy production in building up its energy security and how it supports the country's sustainable development projects. The fast expansion of tourism in Albania has brought with it increased demand for both energy and agricultural products, putting national infrastructure under serious strain, to meet the challenge. Because of the serious implications, this study will particularly analyze the institutional and legal framework of the renewable energy projects and their impact on agricultural land. Employing a multi-disciplinary approach, the study will be based on normative legal assessment and policy analysis. It will assess the Albanian legal framework governing energy security and renewable energy, and will investigate the regulatory framework's compliance with the EU acquis and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, it will examine the impact of the EU’s Green Agenda for the Western Balkans on Albania’s harmonization of its national policies with EU environmental standards. Also, a part of the study will be dedicated to the impact of the European Green Deal on candidate countries, like Albania. Additionally, the study will analyze how environmental considerations are enshrined in the current energy governance policies in Albania. The study's preliminary findings show that if sufficiently supported through good governance and careful legal considerations, renewable energy can support sustainable development and energy independence

Digital language divide from the sociolinguistic perspective: is there a chance to bridge the gap?

    Get PDF
In multilingual environments, the “digital language divide” as the primary barrier preventing the speakers of small languages, the educationally deprived, the elderly, and the disabled, from their full integration into the emerging digital societies is a highly relevant as the grounds for digital inequality for billions of people worldwide. The paper aims to define and critically analyse the digital language divide focusing on how digital language technologies contribute to discrimination and inequality. The research is based on the analysis of the selection of studies and language policy reports related to digital inequality, linguistic diversity and digital language technology mainly from the sociolinguistic perspective. The analysis shows that small languages are excluded from access to information, emerging social inequalities and a growing need for inclusive language policies in further development of the communication based on AI and digital technologies
