The Art of Observation and Experience
Get PDFMindfulness practices aim to develop intentional awareness of the present moment. This paper touches on two of the difficulties that may arise in the course of such practice. On the one hand, the present moment may be overwhelming if there is an over-identification with the content that the practices uncover. On the other hand, the present moment may seem excessively foreign if there is an over-identification with the witnessing of such content. Art can prevent an over-identification on both poles of this equation by acting as a container for content, a source of somatic discharge, and a facilitator for observing relationships with images, art processes, oneself and others. Because art embraces both content and the observation of content, it is ideal for witnessing-experiencing
Transpersonal Space/Time Through the Arts
Get PDFAs transpersonal researchers and practitioners work to articulate the meaning of transpersonal individually and collectively, I suggest conceptualizing transpersonal space/time as real in a physically felt sense. This embodied knowing is best practiced and expressed through the arts. The premise is situated within a larger field using the term liminal as a parallel meaning construct for transpersonal I present my own work referencing a range of disciplines where scholars and practitioners using the terms liminal, transpersonal and others, artfully express their understanding of extra-ordinary experience. A personal example through creative writing is offered demonstrating the way my body/mind inquiring into images of the Holocaust engages the shadow side of the transpersonal

Songwriting and Transformation: The Subjective Experience of Sharing Self Through Song
Get PDFThis qualitative heuristic study explored the subjective experience of transformation resulting from the practice of songwriting in nonclinical populations, through semistructured interviews with 12 songwriters, 6 men and 6 women, aged 35-69. Thematic content analysis yielded 6 top-level themes: Connecting, Communicating, Wellbeing, Affirmation, Personal Growth, and Making A Difference. Subthemes of Connecting reflect a wide variety of transpersonal experiences. The Communicating subthemes capture ways in which songwriting afforded participants a language superior to speech for Expressing Feelings, Sharing Self, and Sending A Message. Participants reported Personal Growth, expressed through subthemes Processing Experience (making meaning of painful material) and Empowerment. Learning explicitly that one of their songs had had a significant impact on a listener was the mostly strongly articulated transformative experience for participants, described in Making A Difference. The findings support models of transformation in the expressive arts literature; through transpersonal encounters in liminality, both songwriter and listeners are transformed
The Eco-Thea-logy of Gaian Oneness and Metamorphosis of Labyrinth Learning
No full textIn the paradigm of holistic interdependence, Eco-Thea-logy is rooted in the life affirming principles and values in which the whole of nature is divine and immanent. This paradigm embodies the multiplicity of sacred matter that is indivisible such as an emergent stream that is not merely unfolding around you–but in you. Unlike monotheistic Theo-logy, Eco-Thea-logy is a complex Gaianweb, grounded in multidisciplinary flexibility–and–interdisciplinary interactions in which the sum is greater than it parts. This complex Gaian–web nurtures Labyrinth Learning diversity constructs of participatory research versus rigid linear methods. Labyrinth Learning is defined as an epistemology that recognizes the relational and embodied nature of knowledge that supports subjectivity in a dynamic learning process. Labyrinth Learning speaks to a contemplative inquiry that is a recursive, cyclical, evolving process. As with Ecopsychology, it is a synergistic interplay between self and the cosmos that awakens the inherent sense of environmental reciprocity. In this earth-centered contemplative practice, the labyrinth is but a conduit of the Gaian Process, in which the topic chooses the student. This interconnected, postmodern approach relates to all capabilities, all disciplines, and all metamorphic ways of knowing
A Cosmology of Connection: Worldview, Ecology, Justice, and Education
No full textWhat are the connections between the Ecological Crisis, social justice, our cultural worldview, and the power of story? How can we build a movement that puts social justice at the center of cultural transformation for the future of the planet? This talk will examine the vision of Thomas Berry, the wisdom of Indigenous and African traditions, the worldview of Martin Luther King Jr., and emerging movements for social and ecological justice as examples of what Dellinger calls “a cosmology of connection.” Drawing on the speeches, sermons, and writings of Dr. King, Dellinger will explore ecological and cosmological dimensions of his vision that have been largely overlooked in previous scholarship. Dellinger will also discuss connections between ecology, justice, and cosmology, and ways to build movements using the power of dream, story, art, and action
