Harding’s American Sign Language Club started meeting again after spring break with a new focus on engaging with
members at all levels of experience. 
The ASL Club has been on Harding’s campus since 1949 when Sam Roach, a student who was hard of hearing,
taught his friends sign language. As more students became involved, the club was formed. 
The club officers decided to restructure the format of their meetings before celebrating the club’s 75th anniversary in
the fall. ASL Club President Shannon Keyser said the new structure will have more of a broad reach to include all
levels of students, from beginners to more experienced students. 
The club did not meet the first half of this semester while working on restructuring meetings, but they resumed
activities after returning from spring break.

One activity Vice President Rachel Emlaw found beneficial was weekly silent dinners in the Student Center. Emlaw
said they haven’t held the dinners much recently but that she hopes to bring them back.  
“We won’t talk; we just sign and have paper and pencil so you can write stuff if you don’t know the sign,” Emlaw
said. 
Senior Joseph Nance said the club is trying to make meetings more interactive and incorporate more of the
conversational aspect of the silent dinners into their meetings. 
“That gives more experience with signing as you would in real life. You wouldn’t, in real life, just learn a list of words
and sign them,” Nance said. 
Another new portion of meetings is translation, where members will work together to translate a familiar passage or
song into signs. Keyser said she is hoping the changes, including these new elements, will be good for both
experienced and beginner members. 
The club meeting time also changed to Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Swaid 214 so more students could attend meetings.  
Two events ASL Club members regularly attend are visiting a deaf church service in Little Rock every semester and
ASL Christmas caroling in Searcy. Past events include signing during chapel services and during Downtown Singing
at Downtown Church of Christ. Both are events the club might bring back, as the officers want to raise more
awareness about the club around Harding and in Searcy.
“ASL has been very enriching for me,” Keyser said. “Any time you learn a language, your way of thinking has to
change to fit the structure of the language, but with ASL, especially so.”

A cruise, for most, might seem like the ideal vacation for those who seek relaxation and adventure without having to
worry about planning an itinerary themselves. Although cruises have much to offer, recent reports of safety incidents
concerning female travelers on cruise ships have cast a shadow on the allure of taking a cruise vacation, prompting
a call for a reassessment of safety measures and protocols among cruise personnel and vacationers.

In the wake of these concerns, several Harding students went on a cruise for spring break. Senior Megan Prater
reflected on her vacation. 
“I definitely had my reservations just because of some things I had seen in the news recently, but I honestly felt super
safe on the boat just because of the number of crew members around at all times and the amount of cameras that I
saw,” Prater said. “We also chose to do excursions that were recommended through the cruise lines, so we didn’t
deviate from what they recommended.” 
Senior Avery Land expressed similar feelings. 
“We went to Costa Maya and Cozumel and felt extremely safe at both,” Land said. “In Costa Maya we went biking
and kayaking, which allowed us to see so much. In Cozumel we went to a resort where we had access to the beach
and a pool. I never felt unsafe in either location, but we were never out really on our own.” 
Senior Ellery Gardner, also on the trip, acknowledged awareness of recent safety concerns while also emphasizing
the security measures in place during the trip. 
“The staff were extremely friendly and intentional, and we made some great connections with the other passengers.”
Gardner said. “We did hear about the events of the woman going to the Bahamas getting abused, but my friends and
I also stayed aware of our surroundings.” 
The entire group of spring breakers expressed that the trip was well worth the slight risk. 
“It was pretty cost-effective just for what we got food-wise, but I would say that it’s really important to go with a group
of people, especially if you’re a girl,” Prater said. 
Gardner said the decision to go on a cruise was not only practical financially but was also the perfect destination for
anyone seeking a vacation, no matter their age or family status. 
“There was so much to do on the boat, and it was nice because everything was already planned out for us … We just
got to choose what we wanted to go to,” Gardner said. “The boat was also very family-friendly, so it was the type of
vacation I would feel safe bringing young children to. I would recommend it to anyone, but especially college
students who want to have a fun and relaxing time [and] go out of the country but also not break the bank.”

One of the first things students receive upon being accepted into Harding University is their own student email
account. This email is a key proponent of communication between students and faculty. Thus far, alumni have had
the unlimited access features with their original student email as if they never left campus post-graduation. However,
Google is changing their policies, and alumni will no longer be having such access as of this summer. 
Vice President of Information Systems and Technology/CIO Mike Challenburg sent out an email to all alumni Feb. 15
alerting them of the approaching update. 
“Harding has always valued community, and one way we have been able to stay connected is by offering free email
accounts to all alumni,” Challenburg said. “However, Google has changed their policies regarding security and
storage, and like many other institutions across the country, Harding’s accounts have been directly impacted.

Beginning June 15, 2024, the University will no longer be able to maintain alumni email accounts. After that date,
accounts will be deleted, and no data will be retrievable.”
This will be the first year of change to these accounts. Harding University made a statement on their Alumni page
that although this change is happening in June, all alumni will have nine months to transition all Google material to a
different account after graduation. This nine month transition period will be applicable to this year and years to come
for recent graduates.
Seniors have utilized the unlimited Harding-provided Google account for numerous projects, research papers and
resumes. While this may not affect alumni who have email accounts with their occupations, many senior students
find this abrupt shift after graduation to be a daunting task. 
Senior Matti Otto, who runs her own photography business while being a full-time college student, said she has been
able to utilize the unlimited storage feature while capturing moments of her friends during her time on campus.
Balancing her passion for photography and a full class schedule, all of her work both in and out of the classroom has
been accessible through one virtual location, she said. Preparing for graduation, Otto said she is beginning to find
alternate storage options for her hard work.
“I think ultimately it will be fine since there is the eventual need to switch from a college email to a professional email;
however, it is a bit unfortunate,” Otto said. “I have used the unlimited storage through my Harding email for various
projects, documents and photos to be used for my resume and portfolio. I now need to quickly find another means of
storage for the work I have accumulated over the past four years in order to still have access to them.”
Another senior, Maverick Walker, expressed his concern for this task upon the regular schoolwork load and graduate
preparation. 
“During my undergrad I used my school email for many of my accounts because it was what I used everyday,”
Walker said. “I was honestly overwhelmed when thinking about all of the accounts I am going to have to switch
emails for when I heard about this. Guess I better get a head start.”
Senior Kara Johnston is one of many students ready to walk the stage in May with the large task of transitioning the
past four years’ worth of material onto a separate account. 
“This will affect me pretty greatly as I use my Harding email address like any other email,” Johnston said. “Since I am
entering graduate school, my Harding email is the only one I used when applying to graduate schools or when
communicating to other universities. While I understand Harding cannot keep up with the thousands upon thousands
of people’s information and email addresses, it is definitely frustrating.”

beginning their spring season.

The women’s golf team competed in the Natural State Golf Classic Feb. 26-27 at the Cypress Creek Golf Club in
Cabot, Ark., and placed fourth as a team, shooting 35-over 611 with additional individual placing. The Natural State
Golf Classic featured 11 universities from Arkansas and Missouri. This tournament was the first of the spring season
and proved a strong start in 2024 for the team. 
Sophomore Brenley Meche tied for 58th overall, shooting 25-over 169. 
“Golf has nearly been an everyday part of my life for 10 years,” Meche said. “[The] Natural State golf tournament
reminded me that with golf, just as with life, there are great days and sometimes more challenging days. I chose to
focus on Isaiah 46 and trust that God may not keep us from challenging times, but as Joel Osteen has said, God
would not have let you get into that fire if it was not leading you to a new place, and you will get through the ‘fire’
without the ‘smell of smoke.’” 
Others from the team including senior Kodie Winnings and sophomore Madeleine Wilson placed in the top twenty in
the tournament and said they looked forward to the season panning out. Winnings shot 8-over 152, which earned her
14th in the rankings.
“I feel pretty good about how I played at our home tournament,” Winnings said. “I mean I tried my best going into it
open-minded with no expectations after playing so well the year before. I’m proud of how I handled my mental game
and overall think it was a good tournament.”
Wilson, who tied for 16th shooting 9-over 153, said that this tournament would boost energy as the season started. 
“I feel like we played very well as a team at that tournament, and it made us realize what we need to work on to
improve even more for future tournaments,” Wilson said. “Our fall season was pretty good, we had opportunities to
play against teams that would push us to play our best. So far the spring has also been good. We have some nice
tournaments lined up in the future, and I’m excited to see what we can do as a team leading to regionals.”
The women’s golf team has four regular tournaments scheduled for the spring season before the GAC regionals and
hopes to beat their record that they set in the fall for a 36-hole tournament.

The Harding Lady Bisons are back and advancing in this year’s NCAA DII basketball tournament. The Lady Bisons
were slotted in as the five seed in the Central Region side of the bracket, and are due to face fourth-seeded Pittsburg
State on Friday, March 15. Head coach Tim Kirby said his team is prepared for the challenge as an at-large bid in the
tournament.
“We are really excited about getting a bid to the NCAA Central Region Tournament,” Kirby said. “The Conference
season is always difficult to finish with a good enough record to get an at-large tournament selection. [The selection]
is a statement of the player’s attitude and hard work.”
Pittsburg State is coming off finishing as champions of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, and
Kirby said the team is ready to face the challenge the Gorillas pose having never played them in school history.
LADY BISONS PREPARE FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT

“Getting here was a challenge as it is every year,” Kirby said. “Pittsburg State has a lot of talented players, so it
should be a fun game.”
The team is back in the tournament for the first time since 2017 when the team advanced to the Final Four. Junior
guard Aubrey Isbell said the team’s determination and drive started in the summer and has continued all the way to
their biggest game of the season.
“It is a very long season, and because of the friendship and accountability on our team, we have been capable of
achieving the success that we have so far,” Isbell said. “Throughout this season, this team has become a family. We
know that from here on out, us being a family on the court is what will bring success and give us the upper hand.”
The first round matchup will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Bethany, Okla., on the campus of Southern Nazarene
University. The Lady Bisons finished the regular season ranked No. 22 in the nation and will look to advance to play
either No. 10 SNU or Henderson State.
