6/3/2020: Course Change Form EE 646
This course is a new updated “on-ground” version of existing KUO ECE-642 advanced mobility focus course. It includes a laboratory component, a research project, an updated title and description, and updated learning outcomes and topics. The course topics have been refined through two successful special topics (EE-691) offerings (Spring 2019 enrollment 14/20 and Spring 2020 enrollment 21/20). This course will be dual listed with EE-446
1/22/2020: MSE ECE
The current MS Engineering-ECE-Advanced Mobility program requires 7 engineering courses with extensions of CE, ECE, or EE plus 2 courses with the extension of BUSN, FINC, ISYS, or MGMT plus 1 free elective course to complete the program. This proposal would change the requirement to 7 engineering courses with extensions of CE, ECE, or EE plus 1 course with the extension of ACCT, BUSN, FINC, ISYS, MFGO or MGMT plus 2 free elective courses. This change allows students more flexibility in meeting their career interests in engineering and leadership roles
Professional Women Identify Their Professional and Personal Needs
Professional women in various fields often express issues they encounter in being able to access quality materials to support professional and personal needs, as well as work-life balance. By studying a variety of modes through which these materials are generally obtained, including conference participation, informal communication via social media, and utilization of networking opportunities, several gaps were identified in available support for professionals. Professionals from various backgrounds were also surveyed in order to better identify their needs in terms of career development. Distributed through a variety of social networks including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as well as the Indiana Secretary for Career Connections and Talent Office newsletter, the survey collected demographic information and requested input on respondents’
preferred method of material delivery, as well as asking additional questions regarding currently- available materials and the specific needs of each respondent. This paper seeks to present
findings from the survey, in order to encourage the future development and improve the availability of materials to support professional development for women in engineering
Metabolite Structure Assignment Using In Silico NMR Techniques
A major challenge for metabolomic analysis is to obtain an unambiguous identification of the metabolites detected in a sample. Among metabolomics techniques, NMR spectroscopy is a sophisticated, powerful, and generally applicable spectroscopic tool that can be used to ascertain the correct structure of newly isolated biogenic molecules. However, accurate structure prediction using computational NMR techniques depends on how much of the relevant conformational space of a particular compound is considered. It is intrinsically challenging to calculate NMR chemical shifts using high-level DFT when the conformational space of a metabolite is extensive. In this work, we developed NMR chemical shift calculation protocols using a machine learning model in conjunction with standard DFT methods. The pipeline encompasses the following steps: (1) conformation generation using a force field (FF)-based method, (2) filtering the FF generated conformations using the ASE-ANI machine learning model, (3) clustering of the optimized conformations based on structural similarity to identify chemically unique conformations, (4) DFT structural optimization of the unique conformations, and (5) DFT NMR chemical shift calculation. This protocol can calculate the NMR chemical shifts of a set of molecules using any available combination of DFT theory, solvent model, and NMR-active nuclei, using both user-selected reference compounds and/or linear regression methods. Our protocol reduces the overall computational time by 2 orders of magnitude over methods that optimize the conformations using fully ab initio methods, while still producing good agreement with experimental observations. The complete protocol is designed in such a manner that makes the computation of chemical shifts tractable for a large number of conformationally flexible metabolites
Free Vibration of a Kalimba Tine Model Beam with Offset Boundary Condition
A study was conducted to better understand the offset boundary condition of the kalimba; this study explored the free vibration of a beam with one end free and the other end subject to an offset clamped boundary condition. The cantilever beam was resting on a table, which provided a solid boundary below the beam. The top surface of the beam was clamped at a variable distance from the table edge. The excitation was a constant initial displacement of the free end, after which the entire beam was free to vibrate. The spectra of beam vibration and the sound produced showed harmonic peaks at integer multiples of the fundamental frequency, in addition to mode frequencies expected with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory
September 11, 2020: Safe Return to Campus Fall 2020, Update 5
The COVID-19 Response Team and University leadership continue to closely monitor the local, state and national situation in consultation with health experts and in accordance with government guidelines. If conditions change, the University will alter plans to ensure the safety of the campus community. Fall Term 2020 classes begin on October 5. As the University’s COVID-19 Response Team continues to finalize details for the fall, please carefully review these updates
