Moana Project: lessons learned from a national scale transdisciplinary research project

    No full text
The Moana Project (moanaproject.org) started in 2018 with the ambitious goal of revolutionizing ocean modeling and observations in New Zealand and building a bridge between traditional indigenous knowledge and the scientific process. The overarching objective was to help ensure a sustainable and enduring seafood sector. The project initially included more than 60 researchers representing 16 national and international institutions. At the end of the project in September 2023, however, we had more than 30 institutions collaborating to maximize the benefits derived from project research and operational outcomes. Numerous challenges were overcome during the project?s 5 years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in internal leadership, and a review of New Zealand?s science sector. Together with the science challenges presented by the research process, these culminated in a richness of results and practical lessons learned on the development and implementation of large, multidisciplinary, cross-cultural research projects. The objective of this article is to share some of these lessons

Influence of Salinity on the Survival Rate of Fertilized Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Eggs

    No full text
Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) exhibit a remarkable ability to adapt to changes in salinity during their life cycle. However, the fertilized egg stages are sensitive to salinity, affecting ontogeny and hatching. This study investigated the effect of salinity (0, 1, 3, and 5 PSU) on the survival of two developmental stages (<1 day after fertilization and <1 day after the eyed-egg stage) of fertilized eggs. Based on the experimental results, we assessed the spawning ground environment using the in situ salinity data of the Namdae River from 1997 to 2002, where the largest number of salmon in Korea migrate to spawn. Survival of the <1-day-old fertilized eggs decreased sharply at 3 PSU or more, and all eggs died at 5 PSU. Hatching of the eyed-egg stage occurred under all environmental conditions. After 2010, the salinity of the layer of water in contact with the sediment in the lower reaches of the river increased (>6.9 PSU) with the frequency of high waves. Overall, the function of the lower river in spawning and hatching is weakening. This study enhances our understanding of the effects of climate change, including increased wave activity, on salmon spawning grounds

Analysis of Flow Field Characteristics of Aquaculture Cabin of Aquaculture Ship

    No full text
To investigate the influence of the number of inlet pipes on the characteristics of flow field and the discharge of solid particles such as bait residue and fish feces, STAR-CCM + was used to analyze the flow of field distribution in a ship-based aquaculture cabin under the conditions of two and four inlet pipes, thus optimizing the inlet pipes of the ship-based aquaculture cabin. Furthermore, a three-phase flow model (solid?liquid?gas) was established to determine the movement characteristics of similar solid particles of residual bait and fish manure in the cabin, while the emission performance of solid particles was analyzed. Finally, the formation of solid particles in the center of the aquaculture cabin was simulated. The simulation results show that the effect of flow field is better with two inlet pipes, and the discharge volume of the bottom outlet has little impact on the emission of solid particles. Findings from this study can serve as a reference and basis for the design and optimization of the aquaculture cabin of an aquaculture vessel
