The Effect Outdoor, Nature-based Camps Geared for 5th-8th graders Can Have on Their Desire to Spend Time Outside
The average child today spends 4-7 minutes a day outside. This is over 50% less than preceding generations. Screens have provided an undeniably attractive means to entertain ourselves and our children. With the constant access to screens though, an epidemic of children with increased anxiety, lack of sleep, and underdeveloped social skills has been created. The outdoors is accessible to most anybody. It is thought that if children did spend more time outside that they would experience better sleep, less anxiety and better development of social learning skills. This study looks at the opinions of 5th-8th grade youth on spending time outdoors after they complete one or more local, nature-based camps.
Six camps were offered that allowed youth the freedom to explore, play, interact, and learn within the natural landscapes of Mitchell County, Iowa. In order to measure the participants\u27 attitudes towards outdoor activities vs. indoor, screen-based play, the participants completed a pre-survey that included a variety of questions to gain information on how they preferred to spend their time, whether they had a smartphone or other devices, and how much time they spent on them versus being outside. A post-survey was also given to them at the completion of the participant’s last day of camp. The post-survey gauged the participant’s level of enjoyment surrounding the camp, how it may have affected their desire to spend time outdoors, and their general thoughts on screen time. Through the assessment of these instruments, it was found that the participants agreed that the time spent at the camp(s) increased their desire to spend more time outside
“I Feel Like a Lot of Times Women Are the Ones Who Are Problem-Solving for All the People That They Know”: The Gendered Impacts of the Pandemic on Women in Alaska
The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic recovery in urban communities in the Arctic have been substantial, but their gendered aspects remain largely unknown. The goal of this study was to enhance the understanding of the gender-based impact on women in the urban areas of Alaska by exploring strengths and constraints to resilience in the social and economic domains of gender equality during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on grounded theory methodology, this study is based on 29 in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The study methodology utilized a conceptual framework that integrated deficit-based and strength-based analytical perspectives. The paper implemented a voice-centered approach that drew on thematic interviews conducted with women in Anchorage and Nome. Alaska’s urban women demonstrated resilience rooted in self-empowerment and community caregiving. This was reflected in their critical re-evaluation of social and economic gendered structures, a reassessment of priorities in family and social relationships, and the mobilization of support networks. These acts of reflection and care transformed into processes of constructing new meanings of life during dramatic events and became a source of personal strength. The crisis also enabled a re-evaluation of entrenched gender dynamics and women’s ability to challenge gendered divisions in both the workplace and at home. Despite signs of resilience, the pandemic signified a setback for gender equality. It exacerbated pre-existing gender disparities within households, disrupted established pre-pandemic social support networks, increased unpaid domestic labor and a motherhood penalty, and deepened unemployment and income gaps. To further adapt to post-pandemic conditions, women need empowerment and greater representation in decision-making roles, which are critical to strengthening resilience in both the social and economic domains of gender equality
Effects of Resistivity Based on Thin Film Gold Depositions
We investigated the resistance properties of thin film gold deposited on a 3D-printed cantilever using a sputter coater. We used current-voltage (IV) curves to measure the resistance of the film as a function of thickness. The results exhibited classic behavior in thicker films and quantum behavior in thinner films. Additionally, we analyzed the change in resistance as the cantilever was flexed. A linear relationship was found between the resistance of the gold film and the displacement of the cantilever. Only the 8 nm film deviated from the trend, showing erratic behavior when bent downward
