Hearing Their Stories: Tailoring Human Resources Strategies for Onboarding, Job Satisfaction, and Retention of Veterans with Disabilities in the Civilian Workforce
Tailored HR strategies play an important role for veterans with disabilities (VWD) as they transition from the military to civilian employment by enhancing their job satisfaction and improving their retention. The literature review helped identify the challenges VWD face during their transition, such as health or mental health problems, cultural adjustment difficulties, and onboarding that is not inclusive. The primary research objective of the study was to determine effective HR strategies to improve the onboarding process for VWD, increase their job satisfaction, and grow their retention rates. Qualitative methods enabled the capturing of data from in-depth interviews with 31 former military personnel. Thematic analysis was employed to identify central themes and patterns in the data. The findings of this study offer techniques to support VWD, like inclusive onboarding, skill development, and mentoring. Tailoring HR strategies in these ways promotes a more inclusive work environment by capitalizing on the strengths of VWD, which leads to enhanced employee productivity and engagement. The findings also contribute to the development of empirically driven HR practices and policies, promoting a shift toward more accommodative and supportive employment strategies. The findings of the study underline the importance of organizations implementing comprehensive HR strategies that can lead VWD to be more integrated into the civilian workforce and, hence, promote overall effectiveness within organizations and increase their employees well-being
It Can Be Lonely at the Top, But it Doesn’t Have to Be: Workplace Loneliness as Experienced by Senior Leaders and Potential Coping Strategies
Workplace loneliness is a topic of growing interest among scholars and practitioners, in part because of the known impacts of loneliness on individuals’ well-being and performance. Recent literature has suggested that senior leaders may be vulnerable to feelings of workplace loneliness but lacks a thorough depiction of how leaders experience and cope with the feelings. This qualitative study explores the lived experiences and perspectives of senior leaders through interviews with 26 leaders and seven close confidants who provide a nuanced understanding of how senior leaders experience workplace loneliness and offer insight on mitigating these feelings. The findings suggest that the structure of senior leaders’ roles within their respective organizations can create systemic or structural isolation and that senior leaders do seem to experience workplace loneliness in response to both emotional and social isolation, two types of loneliness widely accepted in existing literature. Leaders attribute a feeling of “it’s lonely at the top” to the way the structure of the organization thwarts opportunities to build meaningful relationships, as well as describe feelings of exclusion and a lack of trusting relationships in the workplace. The research also highlights feelings of loneliness when senior leaders perceive that there is no one else like them among their peers whether because of race, ethnicity, gender, or background. Coping strategies identified in this sample include cultivating key relationships, intentional self-care practices, and the use of positive distractions to both mitigate and manage some feelings of loneliness that may be unavoidable in senior leadership roles. The findings also lead to a theoretical typology of coping strategies, based on two dimensions, social engagement and cognitive focus. We discuss actionable practical implications for both senior leaders and organizations, as well as limitations and future research opportunities
The Logical Reasoning Dilemma of LLMs: A Mapping Deficit in Representation Acquisition
Currently, Large Language Models (LLMs) based on the Generative Pre-trained Transformer architecture have made breakthroughs in multilingual language processing tasks and performed similar language processing capabilities to humans. However, their performance in dealing with tasks involving reasoning, especially logical reasoning, show significant shortcomings. In this paper, we argue that logical reasoning competence requires a certain type of representation acquisition capability. Based on this, in order to assess whether LLMs have the potential to overcome the shortcomings of their logical reasoning competence in their subsequent development, this work compares the representation acquisition processes of humans and LLMs. This comparison reveals that although LLMs use similar representations to humans in processing multilingual language tasks, they do not have the same representation acquisition capability as humans, and there is a fundamental difference in the process of representation acquisition between humans and LLMs. We refer to this difference as a mapping deficit in the representation acquisition of LLMs, which explains why LLMs succeed in processing multilingual language tasks even though they do not have the same representation acquisition capability as humans, and why LLMs’ logical reasoning competence shows significant shortcomings. This work aims to enhance the logical reasoning competence of LLMs in the future, and we believe that if the mapping deficit in the representation acquisition of LLMs is solved, then the logical reasoning competence of LLMs will also improve

Towards Erasing the Distinction Between the Computational and Syntactic Accounts of Scientific Theories
One of the main goals of philosophy of science is to give a proper account of scientific theories and their structure. One way that accounts of the structure of scientific theories can be distinguished is by the mathematical or logical structures that they involve. For instance, syntactic accounts of scientific theories hold that theories are axioms in a logical framework, whereas semantic accounts are more liberal in the range of mathematical and logical structures they take as pertinent to the structure of scientific theories. Paul Thagard (1988) offers a computational account of scientific theories, which holds that theories are complex data structures and procedures. Thagard also argues that syntactic and computational accounts are distinct, partly due to differences in the efficiency of the relevant scientific procedures employing each formalism and the usefulness of accounts of the structure of scientific theories in other debates in philosophy of science, e.g., scientific explanation. In this paper, I characterize the notion of efficiency of scientific procedures more precisely and challenge Thagard’s distinction between computational and syntactic accounts of scientific theories based on efficiency. Using tools from theoretical computer science, I sketch some reasons why the distinction may not be as sharp as Thagard suggests. Ultimately, I suggest that we understand the computational account of scientific theories as a kind of syntactic account. I then show how such an understanding of the computational account of scientific theories fits into contemporary literature on logic and philosophy of science
Radiating Excellence: Leadership Styles in Nuclear Power That Influence Operators Towards Industry Best Practices
Poor leadership is the root cause for the three most significant accidents in the nuclear industry. The purpose of this research was to determine the best leadership characteristics of operating supervisors at nuclear plants that could help prevent future accidents from happening. Operating supervisors are the leaders that have the greatest impact on how safe the nuclear plant is operating. A mixed method approach was used, where the quantitative study surveyed 77 supervisors about their leadership style and how well they influence standards adherence, and the qualitative study interviewed 11 subordinates of supervisors to determine how supervision helps them follow the standards. The results show that empowering leadership and ethical leadership are both important leadership styles for promoting standards adherence at nuclear facilities. However, ethical leadership does not significantly moderate the relationship between empowering leadership and standards adherence. Understanding how empowering leadership and ethical leadership influence performance is important to senior leaders at nuclear stations and could guide their decisions when hiring supervisors and developing supervisor training programs. Understanding leadership within the nuclear industry could also improve station performance and help build public trust in nuclear power
Navigating the Landscape: Perceptions, Motivations, and the Journey of Data Professionals in Implementing Data Processes and Procedures
This explanatory study investigates the motivations behind data professionals\u27 willingness or resistance to implementing data policies and procedures, utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior and Psychological Ownership as frameworks. Through interviews with 21 data professionals, the research explains how factors such as perceived control, ownership, and attitudes towards data processes influence their motivation. The study tests key propositions, including the impact of perceived time burdens, bureaucratic procedures, and organizational expectations on data governance engagement. The findings underscore the critical role of control and access to information in motivating the adoption of data policies, providing insights for organizations aiming to enhance compliance and engagement in data governance practices
Addressing Daily Compliance of Central Line Discussions in a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine the impact of targeted education on the consistency of central line discussions during daily, multidisciplinary rounds in a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
Method: The Kellogg Logic Model was utilized to guide this project. Education was created and presented to bedside nurses working within the unit regarding the importance of daily central line discussion and the impacts of central line associated blood stream infection on patients. The rate of central line discussion was collected pre- and post-intervention to assess effectiveness of the education.
Findings: This project failed to improve compliance with daily discussion regarding central line, but there were many lessons learned. There were unexpected process changes within the unit this project took place in that presented unique challenges and opportunities for future investigation
