Attentional Alchemy: Crafting Meaning in the Fabric of Experience ---An Argument from Attention for The Content View
Get PDFAbstract: In the realm of philosophy of mind, a central inquiry concerns whether perceptual experiences have content. This paper aims to construct an argument, termed Argument from Attention, which asserts that all visual experiences have content in the minimal sense, drawing upon insights from phenomenological features of attentional experience and mechanisms of attention elucidated in The Erotetic Theory of Attention. To achieve this goal, the paper begins by clarifying the essential features of contentful experience in Section 2. Furthermore, the second subsection scrutinizes Siegel\u27s Argument from Appearances, highlighting the susceptibility of her Weak Content View to the Indeterminacy Objection articulated by Charles Travis in The Silences of the Senses. Through a meticulous analysis of the shortcomings of Sigel’s argument in the third subsection, the paper navigates towards outlining a plausible pathway for substantiating the minimalist content view. In Section 3, the paper embarks on an endeavor to traverse this pathway, advancing an argument from attention and rigorously defending each step in the argument across subsequent subsections
The association between coping-motivated drinking and alcohol-related consequences.
Get PDFABSTRACT. Background: College students’ alcohol use is an important topic of research. Past research indicates that people who drink to cope are at a higher risk for alcohol-related consequences compared to other drinking motives (i.e., enhancement, social, or conformity motives). This project aims to analyze drinking motives, specifically the subscales of coping-anxiety motives and coping-depressive motives, and their association with alcohol-related consequences in a unique population. In addition, the moderating effects of stress will be tested.
Methods: The data for this project was collected through a survey that was given to students (N=176) at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Participants were eligible if they reported drinking in the past four weeks and were compensated with SONA extra credit or entry into a raffle for a $20 gift card. To test the relationship between coping-anxiety and coping-depressive motives and alcohol-related consequences, we conducted a negative binomial regression using R version 4.1.3 and the packages “foreign” and “MASS”.
Results: Greater coping-anxiety motives were associated with a reduced number of alcohol-related consequences (IRR = 0.939, CI = [0.888, 0.994], p = .029) while coping-depressive motives were associated with experiencing more alcohol-related consequences (IRR = 1.065, CI = [1.001, 1.132], p = .047). Stress did not moderate these relationships.
Discussion: Our findings for coping-depressive motives are congruent with previous findings while coping-anxiety motives run contrary to previous research. This may indicate that coping with feelings of depression are particularly salient for understanding drinking consequences for students at UMSL. This project tested the effects of drinking motives on outcomes, but it is possible that experiencing consequences may shape individuals\u27 beliefs and motives about drinking. Future research should examine trajectories of drinking motives from consequences experienced so that we may better understand who is at risk for long-term, repeated drinking-related consequences

No full textThe project is a fantastical novel based on the life of Nikolai Gogol. Gogol was the Russian/Ukrainian author of such notable works as “The Nose,” “The Overcoat,” Dead Souls, and The Inspector General. Born in 1809 in the Ukrainian village of Sorochyntsi Gogol was moderately educated at the Nizhyn School (which now bears his name). Soon after graduating he moved to St. Petersburg (the then capital of the Russian Empire) and achieved early and remarkable success from his collections of stories Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, and Mirgorod. Though he is considered one of the founders of Russian Realism, Gogol was neither truly Russian nor a realist. Gogol lived much of his later life outside of Russia and influenced such authors as Franz Kafka. In the end, Gogol died tragically in 1852 at the age of 42. This novel aims to explore the duality of Gogol’s character: his literary genius and his almost total inability to understand the world around him, or even himself. The novel incorporates aspects of Gogol’s fiction into the narrative of Gogol’s life, and by doing so seeks to understand not only the mythological writer Gogol, but the complexities of the very flawed human Nikolai.

Strategic procurement management of railroad rolling stock in the European Union
Get PDFPurpose – Like a well-designed procurement strategy, a well-designed rolling stock strategy promotes the development of a railroad company and contributes to its competitive advantage. Effective implementation of the rolling stock strategy enhances the likelihood of enjoying the benefits of the strategy’s design. A successful implementation relies on the strategy being known, understood, controlled and communicated to the entire organization.
Design/methodology/approach – The research consists of an extensive literature review as well as a series of workshops with rolling stock suppliers, railway authorities and representatives and rail users.
Findings – This paper presents a collection of solutions for passenger rail rolling stock procurement. The authors offer guidance to the strategic procurement of rolling stock in the European Union (EU) and propose key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of a rolling stock strategy.
Research limitations/implications – While this study presents a thorough evaluation of rolling stock procurement practices, it is limited by its geographic isolation. Future studies should compare the procurement practices discussed here to others in the EU, as well as in North America, South America and Asia. Additionally, this study focused on the passenger rail segment. Passenger transport is an important function of the rail network in the EU, but future research should expand the assessment of rolling stock procurement strategies to freight rail as well.
Originality/value – Overall, this work provides visibility into common rolling stock procurement practices in complex EU railway markets. This work expands the literature through a review of these practices and through enabling research into best practices or a commonly accepted procurement model
