Tales as Old as Time: The Origins of Selected Fairy Tales and Their Legacies in Popular Culture
This thesis seeks to analyze a selection of fairy tales and their film adaptations. The research centers on the origins of these selected stories and their cinematic derivatives, with particular focus given to authorial and cultural influences as well as audience perceptions of these works. The evolution of character through these fairy tales is an area of interest in this thesis, with an emphasis on agency and the depiction of the heroines through the stories and their adaptations. Including two well-known fairy tales and one that is more obscure, this thesis aims to understand how each variation is conceived and to investigate the aspects of the fairy tales which persist as well as those which differ from other stories and adaptations
Studying the Effects of Hydrogen Bonding in 1H-1,2,3-Triazole and Its Derivatives
1,2,3-triazole is used as a building block in many pharmaceutical drugs. The molecule has several derivatives that are useful in other areas including treating fungal infections and in dealing with some environmental issues. One of its derivatives, benzotriazole, is commonly used as an inhibitor of corrosion through the formation of a copper-benzotriazole complex. One area of particular interest in studying triazoles is the ability of these molecules to tautomerize. The hydrogen atom can move from the 1H position to the 2H position and this transfer is thought to be affected by solvent interactions. Here, we study the effects of hydrogen bonding on triazoles by interacting 1H-1,2,3-triazole and benzotriazole with water. Techniques used to study the hydrogen bonding complexes include Raman and infrared spectroscopies and quantum chemistry calculations. Another area of interest is elucidating the liquid structure of 1H-1,2,3-Triazole and its long range structure. This is accomplished by comparing experimental spectroscopic results to quantum chemistry calculations
Financial Reporting: The Application of Professional Development and Research
This paper serves as a compilation of the case studies assigned by Dr. Victoria Dickinson throughout the Professional Research and Development Thesis Program. Each of the twelve studies contained within this thesis present a different topic or problem concerning accounting standards or the application of financial reporting. In addition, this report demonstrates the application of accounting studies to real-world scenarios, thus integrating various fields, such as risk assessment, investments, finance, and accounting. Additionally, this course and continuous research assignment promoted teamwork and classroom collaboration, as the studies were assigned to task groups. Through the use of repetitive group projects, students enhanced their delegation, communication and networking skills. Following the conclusion of this course, students obtained a more thorough understanding of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles, employed critical thinking and analytical problem-solving methods, and ultimately prepared for the role of a public accountant
Speech Language Pathologists and Prosody: Knowledge and Clinical Practices
Prosody is an important aspect of language as it signals linguistic contrasts, conveys pragmatic distinctions, and expresses emotional affect. However, prosody is impaired in several populations, and such impairments can negatively affect intelligibility and the social perception of the speaker. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are the professionals responsible for treating such impairments, yet the knowledge base of SLPs regarding prosody is unknown. The purpose of this study is to evaluate SLPs’ knowledge of assessing, treating, and diagnosing prosodic impairments by using a survey (n=269). While a majority of SLPs surveyed agreed that prosody is within their scope of practice, they also reported that their knowledge and clinical training on assessing, diagnosing, and treating prosodic impairments is not adequate. Overall, SLPs feel they are lacking in knowledge of assessment and treatment methods, experience with clients with prosodic impairments, and knowledge of the nature of prosody. By dedicating more coursework and CEUs to prosody, providing an easy-to-administer assessment, and encouraging SLPs in their efforts in working with such impairments, SLPs will feel more competent in working with clients with prosodic impairments
Examination of Dental Distress and Anxiety-Related Vulnerability Factors
Apprehension towards dental services has been documented for decades, and despite modern scientific advances, dental anxiety and phobia continue to adversely affect individuals’ oral and mental health. Furthermore, the prevalence of dental distress is estimated to range from 8% to nearly 30% among community samples. Given the prevalence and impairment of dental distress, understanding the underlying mechanisms is pertinent to finding more effective treatments. In particular, transdiagnostic processes that may be implicated in dental distress include anxiety sensitivity (AS), pain sensitivity (PS), and distress tolerance (DT). As such, the aims of the current study were 1.) to characterize dental distress and 2.) to examine transdiagnostic vulnerabilities in this population. The results indicated that female students and individuals with a prior traumatic dental experience reported significantly higher dental distress. In addition, dental distress was significantly associated with higher levels of AS, greater PS, and less DT. Furthermore, data showed that both AS and DT were unique predictors of dental distress after accounting for sex and history of a traumatic dental experience. The results suggest that treatments that target reductions in anxiety sensitivity and increases in the ability to tolerate psychological and physiological distress may be beneficial in easing dental distress
A Comprehensive Review of Accounting through Case Studies
The following thesis is a comprehensive overview of financial accounting concepts. Publicly-trade companies have to follow certain accounting standards, and the concepts that arise have real-world significance. The purpose of this thesis was to gain a better understanding of these underlying concepts and see how they impact the decision-making processes of companies. These concepts are not uniformly applied to all companies, meaning that accountants have to design unique accounting systems within each company. The goal for accountants is to produce a set of financial statements that are free from material misstatements that can be used by investors. Each section of this thesis contains a different case, with each case being based around a certain financial accounting concept. As a result of completing this thesis, I have a better understanding of how the concepts we learned in class apply in real-world situations, which improves my overall understanding of the role of accounting in the modern economy
The Utility Player: An Examination of the Role of Baseball in Cuban Society
In this thesis, I will address the role of baseball in Cuba from 1898-2016. I split the thesis into three distinct time periods: Country inception (1898-1953), Revolution (1953-1989), Special Period (1989-2016). Each of these times periods represents a historically significant shift in the political history of Cuba. Every chapter seeks to define the role and significance of baseball in that time period. Through the use of newspapers, magazines, and speeches, I analyze the importance of baseball in society. Additionally, I include information from notable historians to provide contextual information. Cuban baseball served as a form of connection for the sharing of ideas between the US in the early 20th century. It served as a symbol of industrialization and the political and economic advancements that occur. During the revolutionary period, baseball served as a way to legitimize the Revolutionary Government. In transition to the Special Period baseball became a symbol that holds the Cuban nation together. Through economic and political struggles baseball remained a support system. In the end, I found that baseball plays a contributory role in Cuban Society from 1898 to 2016
The Effects of Prosthetic Tactile Feedback on Persons Who Stutter
Vibrotactile speech feedback has been documented to enhance fluency in adults who stutter. Based on these data, researchers at the University of Mississippi have developed a prosthetic device that captures the speech signal of the speaker, converts this signal into tactile stimulation, and administers vibratory speech feedback to the speaker through a handheld stimulator. This patented device, as tested with a handheld tactile stimulator, has been documented as producing significant fluency enhancement comparable to that of other auditory speech feedback prosthetic devices. The purpose of this present study is to collect data measuring the effects of tactile speech feedback on overt stuttering frequency as a function of different bodily locations as a means to increase its wearability and improve user experience during activities of daily living. Twelve adults who stutter (AWS) ranging from 18 to 43 years of age were prompted to read various ~300 syllable passages under four different conditions: a no stimulation control speaking condition and experimental speaking conditions that tactilely stimulated the hand, dominant wrist, and dominant foot. Results suggest a significant main effect of tactile speech feedback on fluency enhancement, with Bonferroni post-hoc comparisons revealing that the foot condition provided significantly better fluency enhancement than other speaking conditions. Prosthetic implementation and future applications of the device are discussed
Case Study: Applying Lean Manufacturing Principles to the Prep Process of the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School
This study synthesizes the author’s area of education and occupational passions by applying lean manufacturing principles such as those of the Toyota Production System to the course preparation process at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. Over four weeks in the summer of 2017, the initial conditions were monitored and changes were implemented in both the layout of the base and the process itself, specifically the logistics portions. At the end of the season, the effectiveness of these changes were evaluated through a staff survey and comparison of evidence gathered during the summer. The time needed for prep logistics was reduced by 25%, from 6.2 hours to 4.6 hours. The checklists used and layout of storage spaces also show improvements in standardization and clarity. This proved the effectiveness of manufacturing principles in environments outside of traditional production lines, and further improvements are described for continuation of this study’s work
Population Genetics of the Eastern Subterranean Termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, in the Southern Appalachian Mountains
As an area rich in biodiversity, the Appalachian Mountains are an ideal place for biological research. The pronounced impacts of Pleistocene climatic cycles on forest distributions over time have shaped the evolutionary history of animals that depend on these habitats, underpinning the research that is presented here. The present study on the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes, was conducted to better understand the spatial distribution of genetic diversity within and among populations of this species in the context of the aforementioned historical climatic changes in the southern Appalachian Mountain region. I hypothesized that there would be geographically localized, distinct genetic groups due to the limited dispersal ability of R. flavipes, coupled with the long history of repeated habitat fragmentation during the Last Glacial Maximum and earlier. This study used termite samples collected throughout the southern Appalachians and extracting their DNA. Next, mitochondrial gene regions, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COII), and the nuclear gene region, nuclear endo-beta-1,4-glucanase (EB14G), were amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Gel electrophoresis was then used to confirm amplification success, and PCR products were sequenced at an external sequencing facility. After editing and aligning those sequences, a phylogenetic tree was estimated from the mitochondrial data, and natural genetic groups were identified and mapped according to the spatial data associated with them. The phylogenetic tree supported four distinct monophyletic groups, all of which were spatially clustered together in geographic space (i.e., there was phylogeographic structure). To determine if patterns of phylogeographic structure identified here truly reflect the history of the species as a whole, R. flavipes individuals in areas that were not well represented in the present study, along with the amplification and screening of nuclear loci will be necessary
