Connecting the Mind and Body in Ancient Greek Medicine
Get PDFI investigated Greek medicine and healing shrines in antiquity and focused on the issue of the mind-body connection and how this phenomenon was understood in antiquity. I researched the Athenian plague of 430-425 B.C., sleep and dreams, particularly in the Rites of Incubation, and Hippocratic medicine as well as religious medicine in order to understand more deeply the origins of Greek medicine and how the healing phenomena were practiced and understood. I have come to a greater understanding of this connection between the mind and the body and have come to redefine the placebo effect and argue that the mind can persuade the body, which can greatly aid in the healing process of mental and physical ailments
A Basic Understanding of Accounting Principles: a Case-by-Case Study
Get PDFTo complete my thesis, the Patterson School of Accountancy and the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors college created a special class just for accounting majors to complete their theses on time. This thesis is a collection of case studies illustrating many topics in the study of accounting. Each case study covers a different topic including the revenue cycle, leases, fraud, inventory classification, and much more. Data is presented in financial statements, tables, and in reports. Instead of covering one topic, the topics examined are all topics/issues an accountant could face throughout their career. An accountant has many different faces: financial advisor, tax consultant, fraud investigator, financial statement preparer. Each case encompasses one of these different faces and illustrates the many different jobs an accountant completes in their career.
Every week, we were given a new case to complete. Some of the cases involved solving a problem for a company, researching the fraud effects of a company, or simply prepare a set of financial statements for a company. Most of the cases were completed with groups assigned to our class each week. We were given a week to complete the case, and then our professor and thesis advisor, Dr. Dickinson, would review our cases and provide valuable feedback. Even though many of the cases were completed in groups, each student’s thesis is an individual piece with different insights into the cases based on each student’s personal findings. Some cases required the use of outside research and others did not. This thesis is a comprehensive study of many topics in accounting
A Case by Case Study on Accounting Principles

From analysis of business activities to computation of inventory, each case presents the opportunity to learn how real-world scenarios are approached and executed. Roman Character: Moral Foundations Theory and the Success of Rome
Get PDFThis study explores the six foundations in Jonathan Haidt’s Moral Foundations Theory and how they manifest in Livy’s History and Augustan policy. Their presence within each of those areas will demonstrate how strongly the foundations were entrenched in Roman culture and may help explain the successful transition from a republic to an empire by examining how these foundations encourage group cohesion. Added to this, this study may also help provide more support for Haidt’s theory. Moral Foundations Theory posits that there are six moral foundations of culture that have developed over time, each responding to a unique trigger: Care, Loyalty, Fairness, Authority, Liberty, and Sanctity. With the advent of culture, the way these foundations were triggered changed (i.e. some cultures only trigger some). Roman culture was able to trigger all six, which helped their civilization lasted so long. To explore this I analyzed the first ten books of Livy, finding many episodes in which the foundations were present (the ones presented are those in which the foundations are most prominent). I also looked at the way in which Augustan policy triggered the foundations thereby allowing the Romans to come back together after decades of civil war and aiding him in forming an empire which would last for centuries. The examples presented also display that these foundations are mutually reinforcing, that is several will occur in one situation thus making each other stronger. This study found that the foundations were abundantly present in Roman culture and their presence not only helps confirm Moral Foundations Theory but also allows us to see how Roman culture triggered these foundations

When outside information was necessary, we often referred to textbooks, academic journals, and the accounting codification database. Housing Policy Alternatives for the Lafayette-Oxford, Mississippi Community
Get PDFThis thesis explores housing policy alternatives to address housing insecurity in the Lafayette-Oxford, Mississippi community and similar non-metropolitan communities which are experiencing accelerated growth. Policy alternatives were collected through a systematic literature review of the University of Mississippi’s One Search database. Findings reveal that there are a number of housing dynamics in U.S. cities which require different considerations in regards to policy alternatives. Policy alternatives discussed range from subsidized affordable housing, the removal of regulations on new developments, social housing, voucher programs, rent control, creating city connections, unemployment insurance, community land trusts, shifting responsibility to a higher level of government, mitigating and preventing mortgage default, as well as private and public coalitions. Through this analysis, I recommend policy implications and recommendations for the Lafayette-Oxford, Mississippi community. Specific policy recommendations include the cultivation of amenities, the development of transit and infrastructure, the removal of unnecessary regulations, the formation of a public-private coalition, and the implementation of a community land trust
“Everybody But Us”: Constructing Evangelical Identities by Defining the Skeptic
Get PDFPew research shows that 25.4% of American Christians identify as evangelical Protestants, accounting for the highest percentage of Christians in America (20.8% identify as Catholic and 14.7% identify as mainline Protestants). Evangelical Protestantism may be the strongest religious force in the U.S. but defining the movement has proven difficult. Researchers have used a variety of definitions to develop a better understanding of evangelical demographics, geographies, or religious strength. My interests and the goal of this research deals more with the performance of these identities; I wanted to know how members of Welcome Church “do” their Christianity.
This research focused on observations of a “community group,” rather than church services. I wanted to observe members of Welcome church in a less formal setting, where members could interact more freely and more often. I chose a group that focused on Apologetics because I understood that the practice centered around defending the faith through theological and philosophical discourse. This seemed like the optimal setting to try to understand how Christian identities are constructed through interaction using participant observation, and which beliefs determine one’s own Christian identity, as well as others’. However, I found that in this group the practice of Apologetics seems to have shifted from formal defense to a tactical method of naming who and what is not Christian. By focusing on interactions and discussions during these community group meetings, I found that these evangelical Apologists focused less on their own beliefs, and more on who they cast as religious outsiders.
The bulk of my data gathered from participant observation of this Apologetics group shows a dissolution of non-evangelical identities that extends beyond religious Others. This research shows how groups including, but not limited to students, professors, women, and homosexuals have become indistinguishable from religious outsiders. Because each of these groups are identified as not evangelical, they have become one and the same. In turn, these evangelical Apologists understand their own Christian identities by identifying who they are not: the salient group of non-evangelicals, or skeptics
Perceptions Regarding Concussions in Collegiate Football at the University of Mississippi
Get PDFConcussions are a form of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that can occur from any force to the head or body that causes the brain to move within the skull. Concussions are common in the sport of football due to the highly physical nature of the sport, and injured athletes can experience a wide array of symptoms. Like other players participating with powerhouse football programs, those at the University of Mississippi are at risk of concussion throughout their collegiate career. Whether players and fans perceive the risks of concussion equally has not been previously studied. Considering the passionate history of football at the University, the purpose of this project was to survey full-time students, faculty, and staff at the University of Mississippi regarding their views of the effects and associated risks of concussion on Ole Miss players. We set out to determine which position was perceived to be at greatest risk of concussion. We were also interested in how the public viewed, and was influenced by, the media’s presentation of concussions. We sought to analyze responses based on Ole Miss classification, self-reported devotion to Ole Miss football, identification as current, former, or non-athletes in football or other sports. The results of this study serve to open a dialogue regarding the safety of Ole Miss football players in years to come
