The Space Between: The Interactional Dynamics between Policy, Organizations, and Social Actors Within the Field of Sexual Abuse
Get PDFFederal and state policy pertaining to sexual assault is broad in its guidelines. In some cases, it is vague. This ambiguity often leads to multifarious interpretations of policy, which can diminish the overall effectiveness. While we know a great deal about how changes in policy shape the outcomes of survivors, we know very little about the context between institutional policy and institutional outcomes: the interpretive practice of social problems within the arena of sexual assault. Therefore, this project will advance knowledge in an area that has very little existing insight. Throughout this research, I observe and document how organizations negotiate, interpret, and implement institutional policies centered on responses to sexual violence. I also consider how internal and external variables act as both barriers and enablers to policy implementation. This research design provides insight into the interactional dynamics of policy, organizations, and social actors in the field of sexual assault. I observed the behavior of employees within their work environment to better understand the overarching organizational framework. Throughout the case study, I documented procedures and analyzed institutional norms. Complementing my participant observation, I conducted four in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Findings demonstrate that this organization’s framework and its going concerns directly impact policy implementation. In addition, the common themes found within the data include political and cultural environments and community resources. These emerging themes serve as both barriers and enablers to policy implementation
Determination of the Chromosomal Position of Three Mutations Using Recombination Mapping in Drosophila Melanogaster
Get PDFGenetic screens are performed in order to characterize genes and mutations, often relating to developmental processes. A previous genetic screen performed in Drosophila melanogaster found three mutations on the second chromosome affecting glial cell development: FF12, DD68, and D19. These mutations each disrupted the pattern and expression of reversed polarity (repo), a target gene of the glial fate master regulator, glial cells missing (gcm). Here, I use recombination mapping with phenotypically observable dominant markers to locate the genetic map position of each mutation. This method provides a rapid estimate of the mutations' locations that can then be tested against molecularly-defined deficiencies to pin-point a precise position. FF12, DD68, and D19 were all determined to be on chromosome arm 2R
Philosophies in Action: A Personal and Analytical Look into Reflective Teaching
Get PDFIn this thesis, I will address the implementation of reflective teaching into everyday practice and how this reflective teaching impacts teacher actions and decisions in classrooms and schools. I engaged in reflective teaching for a semester of my student teaching practicum experience, focusing extensively on my philosophy of education, its evolution, and its implementation. Additionally, I interviewed in-service teachers at a rural Mississippi high school on how they engage in reflective practice and implement their philosophies into their teaching daily. The research from both the journals and interviews was uploaded into a qualitative data analysis software where it was analyzed, coded, and categorized. From this data, I was able to establish the skills and practices necessary to truly engage in reflective teaching. Based on my findings, I devised guidelines for future teachers so that they can engage in reflective teaching throughout their career. I found that even though each teacher has individual beliefs and values that guide their practice, engaging in reflective teaching follows a similar pattern for each teacher
Method Development and Pharmacokinetic Study of JY08, A Dual Opioid-NPFF Receptor Ligand
Get PDFWithin the United States and worldwide, a rapidly developing public health crisis is at hand due to the abuse of opioids. With high percentages of Americans experiencing both acute and chronic pain and limited treatment routes, opioid analgesics are highly prescribed in clinical practice. These drugs act on central nervous system to activate opioid receptors in regions of the brain regulating pain and reward. However, these compounds are associated with many unwanted adverse effects including tolerance, dependence, hyperalgesia, and addiction. Thus, there is a need to for the development of new drug candidates that can serve as analgesics for long-term use without the unwanted side effects. The neuropeptide FF (NPFF) system is known to modulate the anti-nociceptive properties of the opioid system. With this knowledge, the development of compounds that can serve both as a NPFF receptor antagonist and an opioid receptor agonist has become a recent focus in analgesic drug discovery and development. The novel compound JY08 was designed as a dual-activity ligand that acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor and antagonist at the NPFF receptor in order to combat the tolerance and hyperalgesia conditions commonly associated with long-term opioid use. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) bioanalytical methods were developed for the quantification of JY08 through pharmacokinetic, solubility, and metabolic stability studies
Self-Monitoring of Reading Comprehension in Secondary English Language Arts Classrooms

The literature review showed that self-monitoring is an effective practice to improve student’s comprehension and creates a more mindful learning experience. Investigating University Students' Cultural Competency in Relation to Time Spent Abroad
Get PDFBackground: The world is becoming increasingly interconnected through the globalization of economy, resources, and social interactions, creating an environment where individuals must be able to respect, understand, and work closely with people of different cultures. The purpose of this research was to investigate how traveling abroad affects university students’ level of competency in five cultural dimensions.
Methods: An electronic survey, designed to evaluate cultural competency, was distributed to 6,000 randomly selected undergraduate students in January, 2018. Descriptive statistics were used to demonstrate sample profiles. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to determine factors of competency dimensions for global mindedness. A series of ANOVAs were conducted to see how competency levels differ based on time abroad.
Results: Out of 1,650 surveys collected, 1,470 were used for data analysis. EFA using Principal Axis Factoring extraction and Promax rotation revealed five competency dimensions: cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural encounters, cultural desire, and cultural skills. The results of a series of ANOVAs indicated there were no significant differences on cultural awareness and cultural knowledge; however, significant differences were found in cultural encounters, cultural desire, and cultural skills.
Conclusions: As time abroad increases so does cultural competency in three of the five dimensions. Students who have spent time abroad are more comfortable interacting with individuals from other cultures, seek out culturally diverse friendships, and believe there should be more university sponsored cultural activities

I watched each film countless times, read each screenplay, and read many articles written about the films. I also read many biographies, and I watched many interviews with Quentin Tarantino.
In this work, I find that Tarantino exploits the South in order to create much more despicable characters, which furthers the stereotype that the South is in some way lesser to the rest of the United States. The South according to Quentin Tarantino is perverted, grim, racist, misogynistic, and all around despicable. This work explores each of those elements and how they are used in the films and the dialogue they add to national discussions of the American South
Walking Gait Measurement and Gait Parameters Extraction
Get PDFA fourth generation walking gait measurement device has been designed to capture and analyze detailed gait and stride metrics which eventually provides a Fall-Risk Assessment score. Specifically, the device has been modified to fit the residential environment and the elderly consumers which is low-cost, user-friendly, and portable. The gait parameters would be obtained by the on-board gait analysis protocol. Through gait parameters people’s falling risk can then be calculated so that people can be alerted to take precautionary measures before falling. Overall, the device has been made and demonstrated having better performance than its previous generations. The on-board gait analyzing program executed slower than the computer version program but has the same accuracy. However, the overall performance is better than transforming data from the measurement device to a computer manually

There are a couple of instances within this thesis where hypothetical situations were given to further investigate the role of a specific concept as it relates to the industry. This is made obvious by the presence of a series of questions.
Furthermore, the exploration of various accounting concepts was completed via Accountancy 420. My classmates and I conducted our studies on each concept over two semesters, fall 2016 and spring 2017. Brain Drain in Mississippi: Why Some of the State's Best and Brightest are Leaving
Get PDFThis thesis is a collection of stories in which I explore some of the underlying reasons that the state of Mississippi is experiencing a large outmigration of educated, millennial citizens, known as “Brain Drain.”
This project is not an academic paper nor is it an attempt to fix the problem of young Mississippians leaving the state but rather an examination of the situation written in journalistic fashion. It attempts to shine a light on an issue that has plagued the state for years and deserves attention. It includes stories about the social climate, economic opportunities, the state legislature, and profiles of people who have left and come back. It is driven by a sheer love for this state and a curiosity about why so many want to leave and why many come back.
In short, this thesis demonstrates that Mississippi’s net loss of young and bright citizens is an issue that reaches far beyond a lack of job opportunities
